Eh, It's interesting from a techinical point of view. And some of the riffage in it is just brutal.

My view: Technicality can be interesting, but the music shouldn't ride on it. I have better options for finding good riffs than sitting through 20 minutes of men acting like robots.

And from this follows that Meshuggah pisses me off.

The whole song is amazing IMO, think about the beginning, it's so much more complex than it sounds cause of the distortion, and people are so dumb that they say that the distortion is hiding how bad they are. I thought that it was all simple riffage at first... until I listened to it with headphones, and then I could pick out the actual structure, and it's pretty impressive.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you are actually in bands/are musicians? I dunno, I've always wondered that. I've also always wanted to swap band stories with people other then the kids that played a Blink 182 cover at their cousin's birthday party. I guess I'll start with my story.

I'm the lead singer of a blues rock band called Cipher Hour (thus my user name). We're a four-piece band. "The Hour Of None..." is gonna be the name of our first album should we ever get that far. We formed last summer and have been working on writing and recording stuff for a demo since late October (before that we were just playing covers at small gigs).

Funny enough, we didn't start out as a blues rock/hard rock-ish kinda band that we are now. We used to be an all out classic and power metal band. The other guys in the band wanted to do metal because they thought that heavier music was becoming more and more popular and wanted to ride that wave rather then take the risk of playing whatever we felt like. I managed to convince them that our songs would be 10x better if we just wrote whatever came naturally and forgot about trying to make it or what's popular and all that bs.

So that's how we got to where we are now, a sort of blues based hard rock band. Since we started just writing from the gut, its actually been easier (some of the more extreme stuff we did was way too forced). Unfortunately the guys still have the same work ethic they had when we began (which is basically at the pace of snails). But I am pretty excited because the stuff we've been writing since December I'm pretty happy with. I should have a rough recording to show you guys soon too.

Now and again the guys worry about us not making it because our sound is "too old" to ever be popular again. I think that's kinda bollocks. I mean yeah it'd be awesome to make it big even with our sound (which is pretty far from mainstream) but I'd rather not make it and write what I wanna then make it big doing stuff I don't really like.

Anyway, now I'm rambling about nothing. So, what about you fellow musicians?

Heh, it wouldn't have mattered much anyway. They were all dicks. In fact they started to want to get rid of me after I complained about them forcing me to strum the e-string like a retard. It was one of those Sid Vicious kinda deals. I found out I was kicked out of the band by reading an ad in the paper, kinda harsh since despite them being dicks they were my old friends.

Hello!

I play guitar and I've been trying to start a band. We have a singer/guitarist, guitarist, and bassist. We found an awesome drummer, but unfortunately, he has a crush on me and is without a drumset. I'm the only one in the "band" that really knows anything about playing (all the others learned everything they know on guitar from me). The worst part is that I'm not very good yet...I've been playing about thirteen months or so.

At first, they all wanted to make emo-type of music because that's pretty popular around here, so I realized I had to do something before I had to kill myself. And I am proud to say that I successfully turned on three people to classic rock/blues rock/hard rock.:)

My first bass was a Hamer, which is now de-fretted, but it's still pretty shitty. And my good bass is a Jay Turser Viola bass. They're not a very well known company, but they have very good quality for the price. I personally love it because it's very easy to play, sounds beautiful, and is light-weight.

Ah man, that's the worst (both the fact that he has a crush on you and that he is without a drumset). I remember when I was in this sort of weird alternative band, and the lead singer brought in a female guitarist (just cause he had a crush on her, not for her playing which wasn't that great). It was so weird to be in that kind of environment, and then she asked the lead singer if her friend (also a girl) could be in the band. I got kicked out and replaced by a female bassist...she couldn't write anything if you put a gun to her head either. :upset:

It's really tough to find other musicians around here, seeing as this town is tiny. My entire high school has about 250 students. I also suspect that our bassist is a poser (she was talking about Dimebag's death and she kept calling him Diamondbag, now I don't know much about him, but I'm pretty sure he was either called Dimebag Darrell or Diamond Darrell, plus there have been other times when she makes me wonder).

In my Funk band, the only thing we right is Lyrics, as right now it's just me and a bass player.

Pretty much all of our work is made by us improvising, and when we come up with somethin good we use it

Heh, the band I was in before Cipher Hour tried to use that method. I'd write lyrics and a melody and I'd sing it for them, and they'd just give me a blank stare because they had no idea how to write anything to accompany it.

But was he ever called Diamondbag? Also, she said she is a huge fan of Pink Floyd, but when I played Money when she was here, she asked who the song was by.

Anyways, what kind of places do you people in bands perform at?

Yeh, it's a hard method to use,for us, I'll just start playin a solid groove, and my bass player will fill it in by playin a sweet slap line, or just a smooth bass line. And it works great.

No, Just Diamond then Dimebag

Anyways, what kind of places do you people in bands perform at?

Locally, we play in this place called "The Station", which is mainly used as an arts performance center. We have about a gig a month there, maybe every second month. And we alos play sometimes at our school in some organized concerts and such.

Diamondbag? Never heard that one. And a bassist not recognising "Money" by Pink Floyd? That intro is one of the most famous basslines ever!

That's what I thought (about Dimebag).

If anyone ever goes on the road and comes to northwestern Indiana, play at Java Jim's in Valparaiso. That's where I'm planning to play when we actually learn some songs.

Community centers, out-of-the-way-bars-that-are-legally-restaurants, a talent show here and there, a local battle of bands held last year, basically anywhere people will have us. Beggars can't be choosers. Even if you have to open up for a band who plays really bad music.

I would really like a different bassist, but I only know three bassists (one is in two bands, one I don't know about, and the one we have).

Heh, I wish it was as easy to find musicians in my area as it is to find people here. For about 3 months my band searched for a decent rhythm guitarist who was into the music we were playing and couldn't find anybody.

Yea I know what you mean. I can't find anybody to play with around here, and the few people who do play an instrument don't play what I'm interested in.
