I got an Agalloch album off some one last night...and wow is what I must say. Incredible music, and what shocks me more is that they are from Portland, Oregon...my hometown and where I live about 30 minutes away from as of now.
I would have never thought any band like this would have came out of Portland, especially when the only known band out of Portland is Everclear.

Yea, majority of people start on less harsh vocals and work their way up the scale of harsh vocals and sounds.

Heres a suggestion to getting into harder metal...
Concentrate on the insturments moreso then the vocals, if you can concentrate on them the vocals will be in the background instead of the vocals being the main thing you hear.
I know when I first heard In Flames though I could barely hear the vocals since I was used to music that was based on the vocals being loud and not the insturments.

Ok ok ok! You are just a n00b to extreme forms of metal...
Maiden and Classic metal is like the bitch beer/plain beer of metal who all can enjoy it for the most part since its not as harsh.
Then extreme metal is like the hard *** alcohol most people hate, or just grow to like it. Since its alot harsher then just beer becuase it has a hell of alot more alcohol in it...and well this has alot more metal in it you could say?

It's really really funny because I hate beer and cheap wine, but love fine wines and I like many hard alcohols. Nice try though :) I guess I can see where you were going with it, but do you binge on extreme or classic then? :p
OK, since Bobo's analogy made me mad ( ), I shall simply list the route I took to extreme metal.
I much prefer melodic death to any other from, be it Doom, Aggressive Death or Black. In fact, I still cannot listen to Aggressive Death for very long periods, though I have grown to love Melodic Death very much.
I started off on late In Flames, songs like The Quiet Place. Then I moved to early In Flames, stuff like Jotun and The Jester Race. Then I was introduced to technical death like Necrophagist, and also more melodic death like Arghoslent.
So try these on for size:
Necrophagist - Extreme Unction, Foul Body Autopsy
Arghoslent - Purging Fires Of War, Incorrigible Bigotry (Instrumental) :thumb:
Opeth - The Apostle In Triumph, Patterns In The Ivy (Instrumental) :thumb:
Death - Spirit Crusher
See how you go with those. :)

What are those like subject wise? I think we do have a few...Cipher Hour has some I believe. I have a few more like that and less emo if I am thinking of the right type of stuff.
Lemme find some good representations of lyrics for that stuff...
Black and Death is all about anger/gore and sometimes satanism. :)
Well, that is the broadest definition possible, I think.

I encourage you to post em though, it helps you improve a lot imo.

Also thats just death and black metal, doesn't really go into what symphonic black metal and melodic death and black can make as well for lyrics. They can get quite metaphorical, but just plain death and black are pretty straight forward.
Metaphorical:

So I just burned this cd for this mexican in my biology class (whom I'm giving metal education)
He already knows and listens to decent metal (black, death, power), I'm just filling him in on the bands that count.
Yes, I realized I referred to him as "mexican". We are racist friends. [/inside joke]
He was interested in some of the bands I've mentioned, so I burned him a cd. He was quite anxious to hear this necrophagist band I was talking about. (a) Which is why I put three of their songs on the cd.
The songlist:
Buckethead - Machoto Mirago
Necrophagist - Symbiotic in Theory
Bal Sagoth - Atlantis Ascendant
Into Eternity - Splintered Visions
Cryptopsy - Phobophile
Necrophagist - Intestinal Incubation
Atheist - Mineral
Borknagar - Colossus
Psycroptic - The Valley of Winds' Breath and Dragons' Fire
Cynic - How Could I
Cryptopsy - We Bleed
Spiral Architect - A Skeptic's Universe
Morbid Angel - Opening of the Gates
Mithras - Bequeath Thy Visions
Necrophagist - Ignominious and Pale
Death - Overactive Imagination
Decent list? I think he's going to like it.
And I'm expecting a burned cd back from him, so I'll tell you the songs he puts on there, if I even get one.
Pretty good, should have done Fermented instead of Intestinal for Necrophagist (<3) and you should have done the title track of Worlds for Mithras, and there's no Lykathea Aflame or 1349, but I'm just nitpicking.
Oh yeah, and Planetary Discipling is the best psycroptic :p
BTW, if you were really rascist, you would call him a "razorback" or "wetback".

And Cradle of Filth aren't black metal anyways, and they have crappy goth lyrics.

Yeah, I had an idea which you were talking about. Repetition is one of the strongest tools of rhetoric, though..I'd imagine the aim of the song isn't to dance and twirl through metaphors and lyrical devices, but to stir up baser feelings.

i found it very confusing. if you saw the first one you won't have a problem with the second one, but i fell asleep during the first one and i missed it all.
i didn't know any of the characters, and there is alot, and its kinda tricky.
its kind of like....main guys steal something, get caught, realize they were tricked, trick the guy who tricked them, realize as they tried to trick him he was tricking them, they really did trick him, but he secretly tricked them...you get the point.
the movie jumps around a lot and explains a lot of stuff that happened during the movie at the very end. so everything wraps up at the end, but during the movie you may feel kinda lost. but other than that its a great movie.

k at the movie theater, there was this thing and it was like a movie stand that spins. it had a lot of good dvd's and video games on it, and you put in two dollars, and it spins...you have to press a button at the perfect time to make it stop spinning at the right time. if you win, you get whatever dvd/video game is on the bottom of the stand.
i watched this kid (about 13) put in 2 dollars, and win Halo 2, and then San Andreas, Lord of the Rings 3, Harry Pottery (3rd one it think) and Ice age. he said he has won about seven different video games in the past week.
Halo 2 for two dollars? i'm talking canadian money if it really makes a difference.
so he spent about 10 bucks, and got well over 100 bucks worth of stuff. pretty amazing.

I mean...Ive even had almost a thousand post on my last User name, but now that i have a new one...Ive instantly just lost 100s of MXers respect...or should i say "rep".

Sleep (stoner rock, I think, not doom) also have a song over an hour long called Dopesmoker. Then there's Green Carnation's Light of Day, Day of Darkness, and Delirium Cordia by Fantomas. And A Night in the Forest by Uruk Hai. All over an hour long.

Yeah thats true. I only enjoy long songs if they go long because their that dam good.
Pink FLoyds animals doesnt lose my interest for a second, spanning at almost 18 minutes, and why? because its good enough to go that long and keep supllying the listener with good fresh material
The Doors Celebration of the Lizard (unreleased except on Legacy) is 17 minutes, and is just a bunch of jumbled lyrics and confused band members...who seem to have no idea what to play next. I listened to it only a few times, and dont plan on listening to it again.

No, you don't need permission to make a poll, as long as you make sure it is sensible and non-idiotic. :thumb:
