I have one gripe with the general Maiden-fan party line, though: why exactly does everyone on the planet seem to think Bruce Dickinson is the best singer to ever grace metal music with his presence? I mean, he fits the music perfectly, but very often what other people call "operatic acrobatics" just sounds like vibratoed bellowing to me.

Actually power-metal takes as many cues from prog as it does from fantasy, and certain bands that would be classified as "power metal" are quite exceptional, such as Nightwish and Last Tribe. But a band as greased-up and consistently-only-dressed-in-loincloths as Manowar is probably not something you would like, yeah.

The solos are not, but the riffs are absolutely as simple as it gets. Ultra simple chord progressions, one note quickly picked for a bit before switching to another note, totally predictable choruses... of course, you do have the point of the ultra tech solos.

Their uniqueness relates to how the Deftones are unique; their sound is just... strange and a bit ambient/atmospheric at times. I don't know how to describe it. :-/
