That's amusing...I sometimes meander, but I'd say my biggest problem is too many points at once, and everyone gets bored before they have a chance to be amazed at my brilliant connections...but hey, no biggie.
At least you can remember what your connection were. I'm like Peter in that one episode of Family Guy where he goes off on a different tangent with each sentence.
BRIAN: Do you actually listen to yourself talk?
PETER: Eh, I drift in and out.
God, I'm still reeling from Dimebag's death. That's gonna hit a whole ****load of people really hard too, and I bet the guy that shot him was some dick Pantera fan that probably hated Dimebag for not trying hard enough to keep the band together or some bull****. What a ****ed up planet. The guy was harmless. Why on earth would you shoot a guy like that?
I'm not even a Pantera fan, and even I didn't want to believe it. As I said in another thread, not many guitarists these days actually develop their own sound unlike anyone else's. Dimebag was an exception. You can't measure the value of something like that.

Anyone here a fan of the His Dark Materials trilogy of books?
If so, have you heard the ridiculous news about the film version?

Though speaking of film, wish me luck as I'm trying to get a new project underway for this summer. I'm going to be working on a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story "Pickman's Model."

Bartender, I think I've heard of it. What's the basic storyline?
The basic storyline of the books is slightly too vast to outline in the few minutes I have before I have to leave for my tutorial. The problem with the film version is, the director has decided to remove any anti-religious sentiments from it. This may somewhat nix the success of the translation though, since the first two books, solid though they are, lead straight up to the third book, and the third book is all about a war on God. Stupid, stupid, stupid decision.
Goodnight, Ripper. Goodnight and good luck, Pikey.

They put on an amazing show. It reminded me of Maiden's act in terms of the members being goofy/cool, except in a small venue.
Four other bands played too. Two of them were crap, but one was a new thrash act - and it was well done classic thrash - called Ammunition, and another was a raw black metal band called Nosvrolok who were excellent.
The Nosvrolok vocalist/guitarist got bitched out by one of the techies because he knocked the mic down when he was done playing.

Shameless self-promotion here. I'm working on a screenplay that I hope to get produced in 2007/08. I'm just going to make a quick pitch, and I want you guys to tell me if you'd go see a movie like it. Here you go:
Our story revolves around two police homicide detectives, Sam Crane and Miles Harker. Sam is going through an identity crisis, questioning whether or not the job he feels so dedicated to is ultimately worth it. It only makes it worse that he's unable to kick his smoking habit and his girlfriend Katrina Radcliffe is almost ready to leave him.
Things turn for the worst when Sam and Miles are assigned to track down a new serial killer. His victims are always the dregs of society, and always left in the open with a cross either written on a surface in the victims' blood or carved on their bodies. What you find out long before Sam and Miles, is that the killer is actually Mayor Paul Ward, an intensely religious man who has begun a "holy quest" to make the world better by removing evil-doers from the system. Completely.
What ensues is a tense psychological thriller as Sam and Miles race to find the killer's identity as the bodycount continues to rise and the public loses faith in them with each new victim.
What do you think? Would you watch this?
The idea is great, IMO, except...mayor? That's like in "From Hell," when Ian Holm, president of the evil government cult, turns out to be Jack the Ripper. That's a tiny bit...implausible to me. The question is what alternative that isn't a cliche could you pick...ex-cop is too frequent...maybe a guy like the Punisher, except religious and evil?
Yeah, rather than the mayor, make it maybe a local vicar, or monsignuer (sp?). Someone not too highly placed within the church, but high enough to be a zealot, etc.
Great story otherwise. :thumb:

Not really. Well, why not make him the Bishop of a Diocese? Or even the Archbishop of the city in which this takes place?
Or is the mayor more believable?
It's just that you could have the cops seek advice from the high ranking church figure, without them realising he is the culprit.

Believe me, I've thought about it. But I think this works for several reasons. Let me start by saying my first choice for a city is Philadelphia. Now picture this:
We have a story here about two men trying to find a murderer who is in fact the man chosen to watch over the city. He is the mad king of the 21st century. Twisted streets and back alleys, towering corporate offices, and brick facade businesses and tenements take the place of the giant castle, and suburbs take the place of the village that resides in its shadow.
To combat this wicked tyrant, Sam and Miles are detectives who take the place of the knights, and Sam's girlfriend Katrina is the virtuous maiden who stands by his side.
The Neo-Gothic transposes the Gothic tradition, bringing the unspeakable and macabre into an otherwise ordinary setting. Psycho, Halloween, Carrie (the novel), and Poultergeist are all excellent examples of the Neo-Gothic. It opens on a realistic storyline, and then presents us with a story in which most of the horror lies unspoken, but is realized through action and allusion. It creates a pocket of wrongness in our otherwise mundane world.
Another reason I chose to make Ward the mayor, is for the sake of doubling. Doubling is an exceptionally important part of the Gothic and Neo-Gothic. The doubling here occurs between Sam and Ward. Think about it for a minute.

People probably didn't know where Hitchcock, Carpenter, or Speilberg were coming from, either. How many movie-goers connected Psycho, Halloween, and Poultergeist with the Gothic tradition?

You'll have to be patient. I'm still working on the outline of the second act and tweaking my "Mount Rushmore."
Sadly, scriptwriting is a slow and grueling process. I'm currently pitching the idea to anyone who will sit down long enough to listen to me to see how receptive people are to the idea. There are several words in particular I'm watching out for that will tell me I'm on the wrong track. Words like "slasher movie."

Yes, if you're not into melodic death metal already, ease into that. Start with stuff like At the Gates, then move up into slightly harder stuff like Vehemence and Arghoslent, and from there brutal and technical will soon come to you.
But for some death metal recommendations anyway: Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, Behemoth, Death, Iniquity, and Lykathea Aflame.
Those bands have no real relation to each other aside from being great.

Does everyone start off with melodic death metal and move on from there?
I was somewhat thrown into the deep end by coypu, when the death heads thread was first starting, and I came out loving it. So it's not absolutely necessary to start at the melodic end.

any starting place would be appreciated :)
No problem :)
Melodic Death:
At The Gates *
Arsis *
Dark Tranquility *
In Flames (Earlier In Flames though)
Soilwork * (Earlier though)
The Black Dahlia Murder *
God Forbid (they aren't really metalcore anymore)
Into Eternity
Vehemence
Arch Enemy
Death Metal:
Nile *
Behemoth*
Cryptopsy
Kataklysm
Death *
All Shall Perish *
Morbid Angel *
Opeth
* means that they are the best ones in my opinion.

So it's not absolutely necessary to start at the melodic end.Of course not. I was talking personally. I mean, if you like it from the start, hey, thats great, but I'm saying 9 out of 10 times, you will probably need to start slow then move up from there.

I was completely opposite. I started with Cryptopsy and Nile, and when I would try to listen to Melodic death, it came off as annoying, and I just couldn't listen to it. Not until now can I somewhat respect melodic death, as I am starting to listen to it more and more.

The hardest thing for me to get into was the growling. That took some time... This is where Lord worm helped out. Once you get used to him, you can pretty much listen to anything.

Yeah, I know. Just thought I'd point it out :)
Good list by the way, though it looks like you should definitely check out Arghoslent. They'd be at the top of my melodic death recommendations.

Arghoslent could totally pull Running Wild-esque pirate metal on us if they wanted too. That first riff in Flogging the Cargo is a ****ing pirate metal riff. :P
Arsis gets the top spot for my melodic death pick.
