I just realized something I hate. WHen people say that a musician was really good when it was someone who was only influential, not actually that talenented. I was just thinking of those old blues guitarists who are good but not amazing but then people go insane about them. Rant of the hour is complete.

I completely agree with what your saying, I even feel that way about Jimmy Page, I dunno, maybe I haven't heard enough Zeppelin, but he just seems so overrated.

A lot of people feel that way about Page. I personally like him, wouldn't call him the best quitarist ever or anything, but I think he's very good.

Cain
12-03-2004, 11:40 PM
Zeppelin is, in my opinion, overrated and overplayed. Surely their classification as the first heavy metal band is stupid genre-tossing gone awry. I could never get into them at all.

Page was also easily the least talented of the Yardbird Three of Clapton, Beck and Page. Too bad he's sitting on mountains of cash while Beck still struggles just to get a new hotrod to play with.

Bartender
12-03-2004, 11:44 PM
Beck is infinitely cooler than Page though, money or not. He's got the whole lone wolf thing going.

Cain
12-03-2004, 11:51 PM
That's what I'm talking about! Beck is actually the reason I started playing guitar. I heard one of his songs off the album "Flash"...an inferior album by his usual standard, but still that song "Gets Us All In The End" has got some unbelievable wailing on it. I was like "Holy ****, I've got to learn how to do that!" His recent excursions into techno have been very very interesting as well. His command over the Strat and the whammy bar is out of this world. It's cool that you like him, Bartender: I hear he's not that well-known even in England.

guitrguy
12-03-2004, 11:57 PM
I would say that Jeff is farily well known.

Bartender
12-04-2004, 12:00 AM
I've no idea how well known he is over here. I assumed reasonably so, since he's English, but I never really thought about it.

I started listening to him a while ago, after downloading one of his techno-influenced instrumentals (So What) on a whim.

Cain
12-04-2004, 12:01 AM

Among us and middle-aged folks, yes. Sadly, your average rock fan has heard of Clapton and Page, not Beck, I should think.

His finest techno and song-writing moment, in my opinion, was with his first album in the techno vein, "Who Else!" The first song, "What Mama Said," has the most badass two-handed riff on the face of the planet, played by Jennifer Batten. It's actually one of the coolest riffs I've ever heard, and I wish they played that stuff at all those crappy high school dances instead of hip-hop junk.

I only actually own two of his albums, one from a long time ago (Beck-Ola) and one of his more recent (techno-ish) ones (You Had It Coming). I need to get more, though.

I think you're just giving him too hard a time because he's not ashamed about liking nu-metal. Sometimes I wonder if he really deserves your whipping-post-in-chief designation. Feel free to cite examples to explain it to me.

BTW, he is also pretty young compared to some of us. We don't really have such an advanced musical sense when we're younger.

Bobo, stop being a hostile *******, I was in no way trying to glorify myself, as you seem to think, you said something that was completely wrong and I argued a point, and you should have pointed out that it was obviously a lie because IQ tests are capped at 150, I was trying to make a point in saaying that someone with a ridiculously high IQ can fail because they have ADD.

Anyway back to the Beck talk. #1 how the **** does me liking nu-metal mean I can't like Beck, do you realize how much different music I like, I listen to bluegrass, thrash, rap, alternative, progressive, indie, nu-metal, some death and black (just got into it).

#2 I have liked Beck for the majority of my life, ever since my brother got me Odelay for my brithday when I was about 8 years old.

Anyway I first liked Beck because I just thought he sounded cool, but more recently I started listening to him again, and I relized how talented he is. He can freaking make the simplest riff sound amazing. His music has such a wide variety to it, compare Devil's Hair Cut to Where It's At to New Pollution (names correct? I lost the CD case a while ago).

About 3 years ago I went to a concert of his, there was some dumb band playining, and they were pretty much aweful, but he made it amazing, in the middle of their performance he went on the stage and started breakdancing, it was truly the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Also, I have a question, can Beck read music? I told my friend that Beck was so much better than Led Zeppelin and he said I'm wrong because Beck can't read music.

So, Im playing some basketball today. At my house I have a circular driveway, the top flat, the curves are down hill. So, the ball takes off down the driveway toward the main road and I take off after it. I run up to it, go to kick it to the right and instead step right on top of it. 3 complete head over heels later I grind to a stop on my elbow and right side. I must admit, its prolly one of the coolest wounds I have ever seen, I can see tendon and bone! So, I bandaged it all up, put some neosporin in it, went back to play and the very first pass hits me right in the raw spot. I think Im done playing basketball for a while.

So to argue that I claimed that I have a 164 IQ, but fail because I have ADD, just to make a counterarguement.

I'm sorry, but even a bio-med student like myself appreciates that quite a few ADHD and Depression cases are not true chemical imbalances, but are in fact either the result of a bad disposition, or idiotic parents who don't want to take responsibility for their childs behaviour. Too many people see Ritalin as the preferable treatment for bad behaviour and bratty kids, rather than a firm smack on the wrist, or a few harsh words to bring them back into line.

Actually, most "ADD" cases are regular behavior by young children that is looked upon by their parents as "annoying" and they don't want to put up with it, so they take them to a doctor to punp them full of ritalin.

Ok, guys, listen. I would feel terrible if Eleventeen, faced with a plethora of massively intense kids that also happen to be really smart, was forced to feel like he had to leave these forums in some sort of disgrace. I honestly would, no matter what he said. From what I gather, he said some really stupid stuff and is being belligerent, but really, guys, this is a community thread and it's no community if there's such hatred being spewed forth by everyone. I would want Eleventeen to have something resembling a decent time here, so I would suggest getting off his back for the time being and quit hurting his feelings...for now. If he continues then you'll have justification again, but this is really no way to keep this up. We were all friends here until a short while ago and this is totally ruining the mood of the thread. I would advise letting up for a while, and that means: Eleventeen, bans have meaning and you shouldn't even be posting. I admit that my ban was shorter than yours but I still took it without complaint once I figured out what was up. Quit arguing. FF, quit repeatedly taking the mick out of him, and everybody else, try to restrain yourselves. I'm really tired of seeing all this crap from everybody. If you must hate one another, do it in chat.

Which one? How long is my ban?

Just a day. I couldn't tell you which thread, but look through threads you posted in, and see if any of them are closed.

Woah! At band practice recording. For the first time ever we got something done in only 2 takes. Our talents with the recorder grow.

I know what thread...Superpeer banned me for posting in the "what's your favorite band thread." I only posted to tell him to use the search feature...didn't know I'd be banned for posting in the thread even before the thing was closed. Oh well, if it's only for a day, I guess that's that. See you tommorrow, guys...Sorry to the mods for posting in there. I guess I should have known better.

The newest Bond movie sucks. Didn't they run out of books or something? I want tne next Bourne movie. Those are excellent spy flicks

The one with Halle Berry. The one that has nothing in common with bond except the name and actors

I don't think she's hot but she has lots of sex appeal

I don't think either.

I haven't seen that film though, so maybe she does something special in it that would change my mind.

Silenius
12-05-2004, 01:28 PM
No, there's nothing mind changing in that movie.

The only thing they could've done to make that movie good was to get Halle Berry naked.

That wouldn't have helped much.

Getting someone better, and having them get naked.
