Rap is about the lyrics, it's like poetry, read my list, that stuff is good (beastie boys just funny). It isn't about music, so shut up, don't be so close minded and stop trying to get people to stop listening to what you don't like.
Which was my point in the first place. Rap isn't music, it's a bunch of lyrics. If I want poetry, I'll go read some poetry. If I want music, I'll listen to some music. Makes sense, doesn't it?

I agree, though I'm not the least bit fond of rap. I think its because I avoid it and havn't heard people on your list. But mainstream rap (to my knoledge) has the worst lyrics imaginable. Pure egotism, 'woo I have money so I'm going to write a song about it' ect...No possiable topic less fit for lyrics. And Eminem..what kind of person writes a whole song about their name? (theres more in it I assume but I can't make out what he says nor do I have the will to) Am I just rambling mindlessly or does anyone at least partially agree with me?

No. Poetry is not always focused on rhythm and rhyme. Flow is more important in rap. Poetry readings are nice, but in no way comparable to rap.

I think Eminem is quite comical lyrically. He has pretty fair lyrics as well.

Well as they said, that's just mainstream rap with the bling blang garbage.

But still, if it consists of a dude talking rythmically, no matter how good what he says is, I don't want to hear it if I'm looking for music. It's faster to just read what the guy says if you want to know.

I have no problem with rap as a musical style, but I have a huge problem with its current subject matter. The way I see it, rap was very well on its way to developing a highly influential social consciousness in the late '80s, with bands like Public Enemy rapping about social injustice like the LAPD killing innocent black people simply on the basis of the percieved criminal intent of said individuals. It was shaping up to be a very vital, important cultural revolution. Then what happens? Gansta rap comes along and brings the gang wars, drug addictions, and horrible sex-related disease and hardship of the inner cities to the mainstream, and treats ALL of it as something to be respected, with a scant few rappers, like 2pac, sticking with the social consciousness direction. The "pimp" legend followed that and totally sunk rap and perpetuated every possible stereotype of the modern 20-something black man. Just ridiculous. Now we have black people dreaming of being these people instead of productive members of society, and thanks to us and our continuing prejudices, that's all they feel like they CAN be. That and basketball players. But that whole era of rap, in my opinion, just made the whole situation worse, reinforcing white prejudice while perpetuating the downward spiral of inner city life. All these idiots like Nelly need to see Boyz N The Hood or something. I hate modern rap not because it's hard to listen to, but because its subject matter is repugnant. Anyways, I know I probably generalized a lot, so if anybody takes issue with my idea of the situation, I'd be happy to discuss. That's just the way I see the trend developing.

You make some good points, although I think you're missing out on a lot of modern rap. Stuff by artists such as Jurassic 5 and The Roots is modern rap, and doesn't promote violence, or an appalling attitude. Similarly, music by the likes of The Beastie Boys and Outkast fulfils the same sort of role, and isn't really negative or anything like that. Yeah, a lot of mainstream rap sucks, although I'm curious about why you picked out Nelly? His music may not be much good, but compared to a lot of rappers, he's hardly offensive in his subject matters.

Nelly is a rapper that perpetuates the "pimp" legend. I find that just disgusting. I don't see him as gangsta rap or anything like that. I just take issue with his glorification of that lifestyle.

Very well put. It obsesses most teenagers in the sub urbs, and its downright annoying. When I actually lived in the sub urbs I couldn't go anywhere without seeing how influential this form of 'music' has been. Look at stores in the mall, clothes people wear, all are influnced by the music. White kids dressing like they're black, talking like their black, losing all of their true heritage. Mainstream rap is diminishing every positive aspect of american teenagers and pre teens in general, though it isnt like everyone is listening to it and pretending that they are part of the life style glamorized in the music they listen to. Why this music is so popular is beyond me, but you eather like rap, mindless pop, or the more intelligent set tend to like real rock/metal ect. because they think about what they're listening to and how most of it is utterly pointless. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I dislike rap, at least mainstream rap..

But I just wanted to say that most of the people here(r&m) have been very helpful and suggestive, and I appreciate that. Rap is a form of music.

Hip-Hop is a form of idiocy.

Quoted for truth.

There was a huge hip-hop-oriented show at my college a few weeks ago, and they had this amazing spoken-word poet whose mantra was "**** hip-hop" because of the culture's tendency to get more young black children focused on diamond jewelry and rims than an education.

Actually, did anybody see this Chris Rock special they've been showing on HBO recently? He talks about a lot of this stuff in a great way, and I'm pretty happy that he's saying stuff like it. Maybe that will wake a few people up.

Rap is part of hip hop culture. It's one of the five (I think) keystones to it. Just because the most prevalent form of hip hop culture at the moment is badly diseased doesn't mean the whole thing can be written off.

Just curious, as we're talking a lot about how American city issues and stuff influences hip-hop and vice versa. What do you guys learn about all this sort of stuff in the UK? Not acting like you don't get accurate stuff there, but I'm curious. What sort of idea do you have about the American inner-city problems, generally?

I couldn't say, to be honest. I could only tell you (a posteriori) of my point of view, and, stuck-up though I will sound in saying it, I've just never really been around un/badly educated people (more than in passing); just people who have always been reasonably well-versed in lots of areas. My point of view is even more distorted because I've spent a not inconsiderable amount of time in America anyway.

That said, the impression that I get is that people in Britain (barring those without a chance) tend to have a decent amount of knowledge of countries outside of England, the US in particular.

Yeah, just wondering. I can only imagine what sort of impression you must get from some of the Americans on this site...personally, I like that there are multiple nationalities on here. We can actually discuss this sort of stuff, and destroy propagandist impressions. I wish more of the regs here posted in the Pit's political forum, as it's always healthy and interesting to know what Europeans are thinking at any given point and time about America. I'm none too happy with the American populace in general and of course am furious with the Bush Administration, and I'm concerned that some Europeans might get the wrong impression, that all of America voted for the imbecile, as opposed to the 52% it actually was. I hate what we are in the eyes of all of you folks in Europe. I try not to be what we are in that respect.

Actually my friends and I were talking about it today, and we thought that we should write letters to all European Union nations aligned against the U.S.-Iraq war and ask them to invade us to get us to cut it out. How come the intelligence agencies of other countries can't depose our regime if they don't like it? I wouldn't mind. It would serve us right too, for the similar stuff our wonderful CIA has done.

That idiot. I can't believe he actually managed to convince some Americans that Europeans "wouldn't follow Kerry," and then claimed to know "how they think." What rubbish. It's clear to me that even the populaces of those nations involved in our coalition were pushing for Kerry. What a mess we've landed ourselves in by voting for Bush again. But anyway, sorry, this should go in Politics. Just some two cents, Bartender.

Don't get me wrong, I love metal, but you can't talk about rappers not being taken seriously because of their names when you have bands like Anal Blast, Cannibal Corpse, Mortician, etc. And for misspellings, Kreator, Berzerker, etc. The point is, the name does not make an artist, the music does.
Ah, I was wondering if someone would pick up on Kreator or Kataklysm. Or Berzerker. But the vast majority still spell their names correctly. And I don't see whats wrong with the name Mortician, even though they are a terrible band... Also, Anal Cunt are

1. A Joke Band
2. Not Even Metal

The point of my post was to state that misspelling don't determine a band's quality. Obviously, Kreator are an amazing thrash band, and The Berzerker are amazing death/grind. The name shouldn't matter at all...let the music speak for itself.

We played an INCREDIBLE show last night. The crowd was insane and we actually had another band play in between our sets. This band is a HUGE local band and only plays 4 times a year. They have a huge following and are known as one of the top 3 bands in the state. Well, we kicked the dogshiit out of them! It was killer! Anyone else besides me think In Flames' "Biosphere" sound like a metalish pirate tune?

Every time I hear it, I think of In Flames on Captain Hook's boat and their playing on board...with the Jolly Roger flag waving...

Ya, the intro sounds a bit "piratish" you could say. I would rep you for that but alas I am out of rep's for the day.

And that song rules as well. :thumb:

Inner Mounting Flame is incredibly technical....blows me away. Even weirder how it was made 30+ years ago. They were way ahead of their time. Every musician is ace. Get this cd NOW :p
Guitar solos, violin solos, Cobham on drums is a beast, and they keyboardist..... he started it all with the keyboards. Wow.

The Flecktones do the same thing for me, but with completely different music. Sounds incredibly weird, but there is some serious orgasmic harmonica playing in there, along with banjo and bass solos. Also get this cd NOW.

Best purchases I've made in a long time. :)

Well, I had a **** day. I had to go take my mum to the doctor becuase she is feeling ill, and we ended up cooling our heels in the waiting room for over 2 hours. What the hell is that?!? I mean, that is taking the term "waiting" room a little too literally.

Oh yeah, off to work now, then a club, then sleep, then more work. So I don't think I'll talk to any of you for another 24 hours. :p

^ x_x that sucks man...the last time I went to the ER was when I jumped off a couch and hit the floor XD

My mom was all paranoid but I wasn't in pain, then again I was like only 2 or something.

Anyone here ever play a game called "Descent"? The one where you go into these little futuristic mines and blow the **** out of robots, and make it out like Star Wars after you nuke the core?

I tried playing that game yesterday but my computer repsonds way too fast to it so I had to quit after a while because the game was like on steriods.
