View Full Version : Your Favourite Vocalists

I apologize if this thread has already been opened before.

I'd like everyone here to write names of their favourite vocalists. However, it is not important to include only rock music vocalists. You can write even opera singers or pop or even rap (what I really doubt that you have) vocalists. And write as many as you want.

here is my list:

1. Kurt Cobain
2. Paul D'ianno
3. Gavin (from Bush (forgot his lastname))
4. Hethfield
5. Dido (It's weird but I really like her voice)
6. Girl from Cranberries
7. Joan Osborne
8. Vocalist of U2
9. Vocalist of Coldplay
10. Everlast

That's all I can remeber now :thumb:

Shame on you Jos! the new audioslave singer is Chris Cornell...one of the Gods of Rock voice, Former singer of Soundgarden, one of the Gods of Rock music, One of my favorite bands, one of my favorite singers....

Of course thats maybe why im surprised you dont know his name, cause he's my favorite and obviously not one of yours. hehe. of course he is a bit older now and has lost some ability, or loss some desire to do what he used to.

Being a singer myself, i personally find that i have a huge amount of repect for really good singers, rather than their image (johnny Rotten etc) but not saying that their image isn't cool, but it's a lot easier for someone to dress up than to belt out an E minor.
random order.
Vince Niel (although he had image as well ;))
Anothony Kleidis
James Hetfield, Funnily enough, at schoo, if you sing a metallica song perfectly, you get excellence (A or A+)
Roger Daltry, but the who are just awesome
i really like the singer of the band "supergroove" (a kiwi band)
and i think the darkness singer is a good singer.
The verve singer
freddie mercury
Bon jovi.
i think are bad singers are:
Pantera
the singer of the mighty mighty bostones.

Tom Waits, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Steve Marriott, Janis Joplin, Rob Halford

No order. These are the best singers of all time.

Serj Tankian - System of a Down
Daron Malakian - System of a Down
Johnathon Davis - Korn
Maynard James Keenan - Tool
Dave Matthews - Dave Matthews Band
Amy Lee - Evanescence
Shirley Manson - Garbage
Anthony Kiedis - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Did I mention Johnathon Davis? BEST singer ever. Every time he sings he commits 100% and he is really emotional about his lyrics and they all mean that much more to him. There are songs where he gets so emotional at the end that you can hear him crying. He also has an amazing screaming voice. Johnathon Davis RULES!

Jezen

On the other hand I dont like the following:

Eddie Veddar (Pearl Jam) I think he sounds like hes half asleep when he sings. Hes so dreary.
Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) I used to be into them but I think he is the only one really trying to be a rapper and the rest of the band are rockers.
And I really dont like the guy fron Alien Ant Farm. I just hate his voice. It gives me that claustrophobic feeling that ur gonna be sick or die if you keep listening to it.
Same thing goes for Darren Hayes. He should be tortured for his song 'Popular'. I can't stand him. I even like maths more than him.

After much deliberation, I have decided that Mikael Akerfeldt is the best vocalist I have ever heard.

Plus, it's fun to let my girlfriend listen to something from "D4mnation" and then pop in "Still Life" and look at her face when I tell her that it's the same guy singing and screaming.

My all time favorites have got to be Layne Staley and Maynard. Layne put such a raw emotional face on his vocals(Cantrell sounded real good in the background too), and Maynard has the most unbelievably ethereal sounding voice I have ever heard, and is by far the best lyricist I've ever encountered, both in substance and structure. Another really good singer these days is Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, although I feel like he cheats a little because his crystal clear tone makes him sound like he's higher than he really is on those non-aggressive parts, but then again, thats not really his fault, and ****it it sounds great.

BTW people, Axl Rose's singing is something I'll bet some of you can do, it's a matter of simply pressuring incredibly thick folds way higher than where they can vibrate at. That's why it sounded like a cat being strangled. (I'm not saying you're wrong if you like it, but it DID sound like a cat being strangled.) He could have molded a godly voice out of that, but singing with such poor form has undoubtedly torn his chords to shreds by now(His presence was undeniable though). It's actually not too different than what brandon boyd from incubus does, only he has less range to do it with(That actually sounds kinda nice though. It works perfectly for their sound anyway).

And honestly, I don't understand how you guys can listen to this one octave, faked accent pop-punk crap vocals these days and say it's talented. It kinda bugs me when the greats get forgotten cuz a buncha wannabe hardass kids like their hardcore image ridden pop music......sad sad world.....

Fantomas lead singer had some nice sounding vocals aswell, I love that strange quick screaming stuff he does on "The Godfather". And there's been plenty of great vocalists mentioned in this thread, but the two at the top for me personally are definitely Layne and Maynard(all around).
