I just recently bought my Parker Nitefly M guitar and I'm saving up for an amp, so I didn't really have any guitar stuff for Christmas. My parents don't buy it for me anyway.

But I did get a nice selection of DVDs, cash, and gift certificates. I got a Martin Scorsese Box Set (Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Who's That Knocking at My Door, and After Hours); Videodrome Criterion DVD; "Curb Your Enthusiasm" Seasons 1 and 2; "Seinfeld" seasons 4-6; Jerry Seinfeld live on Broadway; and a Johnny Cash live DVD. As well as some good spending money and gift cards to Cinemark.

Very good Christmas here.

I got a Schecter aswell.

C-1 hellraiser all the way.

I got an Omen-6, Trivial Pursuit 90s Edition (I know so much useless crap), a book that I already own (Lemony Snicket>You), the Parabola DVD, and a guitar cable. not to mention stuff in my stocking, like candy and gum.

I definately gave out alot more than I got. I got my friend Ghost Reveries for 15$, my fiance 40$ worth of Manga (she's hopelessly lost in it, I like it but not as much as she does), I got my mom a scarf hat and gloves that all match which costed about 40$ as well, my sister got a squishy pillow which was like 15$, I got my fiance's family all presents which probably ended at 50$, and my step dad got a mini cooler which was 53$. All together that's 203$ that I spent on other people. In all I got pretty much what I gave but still I know people that get video cameras and new stereos.

I got...

$200 from my dad
$100 from my aunt and uncle
$25 gift certificate at my local guitar store from my brother and sister-in-law
2 shirts from them as well
Zeppelin poster from 2 other brothers
Joe Satriani - Is There Love in Space? guitar book from the same 2 brothers

I think that's all.

Hey dude, some interesting points there. Didn't maynard say the song wasn't about god and jesus? I know this doesn't affect your interpretation but to get the 'true' meaning sureley we have to look somewhere else. I find this incredibly hard when in the lyrics it mentions crosses

Well int he first stanza you picked out the lines 'he had alot to say, he had alot of nothing to say' i find these lines could talk about Martin luther king (now to be called MLK) You see he tried to change or reform america into a non racist nation. He had many things to say, which may have become reptitive, hence maynards contradiction.

The next point i recieved from this guy called 'mstajduh' on the toolshed forums. in the line 'We need the f*ckin space to nail the next fool martyr the explanation the guy gave was "He was the one doing the nailing his 95 thesis on the corrupt catholic church in wittenburg" this makes sense, Maynard could be using a complex metaphor, but maybe im mistaken. These are the two main arguments i have. Has anyone got any othe rideas on 'eulogy'?

i always thought euology was about just leaders in general. the defining lyrics of the song for me are "he had alot to say...nothing to say" and "get off the cross, we need the space to nail the next fool martyr." this could be an analogy to any sort of revolutionary leader who throughout history has challenged the status quo and been killed or otherwise ostracized for it and is calling them hypocrites because their philosophy/dogma is just as close-minded as the ideas which they were challenging. jesus is a good example, although that was actually not my first impression. the first few times i listened to this song, i visualized the communist revolution in russia. however the allegory to christianity as a whole is sounds too i think.

i do agree that Tool songs are purposely meant to make you think and do not offer any easy answer as to their true meaning. maynard and the others probably want listeners to create a meaning for themselves rather than dwell on what the song is "supposed" to mean. this pretty much holds true except for the tracks on opiate, which are more straightforward than the later albums; however the music as a whole on opiate was more convential anyway... however the meaning to 'opiate' i always thought was fairly clear, he is criticizing the church and corrupt preachers.

the only thing i disagree with is the interpretation that "we both want to rape you" is talking about taking money, i.e. tithes. it rather made me think of rape in a literal sense, because wasn't that when all the church scandals were coming to light about priests sexually abusing little children? maybe this is too simple and easy a meaning but it seems sort of obvious to me...

anyone have any ideas about prison sex? i thought maynard was talking about being abused as a child.. but i dont know for a fact he really was so i cant really say this positively. the lines "release in sodomy. for one sweet moment i am whole" and "do unto others what has been done to you."

could he be lamenting that he is doomed to repeat what has been done to him as a child, i.e. sodomy?

You guyes were right. Toology was horrible. There was one short interview with adam, then pointless other interviews with other un-important people. Plus the repetitive pictures every 2 mintues and not even any Tools song led to the disaster. I noticed on the back the it said: "Made without the authority of the Band, managemet or record company of Tool. So any one who doesn't ahve this and has even thought bout getting it, Stay Away.

mudvayne420
12-26-2005, 10:53 PM
well on a vid. i saw of tool when they played prison sex, maynard stated that this song is about the cycle of abuse within ones self and this song is about the first step which is recognizing, but after that step is to work through it.

I was at Best Buy checking out Ipods and I just realized how annoying Juggalos are to me. I don't know why because I never had a hate for them before but now they're worse than emo kids in my mind. It's irrational but once I saw this kid, he had a shaved head with hair on top like a mohawk but in a ponytail, an ICP shirt on and was holding three Slipknot cd's. Slipknot only has three cd's except for the new live one. God, I have no idea where this came from but I can't stand them anymore.

Hah.

I have this instinct, that if anybody is sporting anything ICP or Slipknot related, I just automatically assume that I won't like them. Ususally, I'm right about that.

And actually, I have nothing against Slipknot. I used to love them. But even when I did, I hated when people wore Slipknow clothing, and made them sound like such gods.

Nothin against them. I just got bored of them after Vol.3 came out. I thought it lost all their old style, and I ditched them. And then I realized I didn't even like their old stuff anymore either.

Right now, I am soooooooo addicted to the band Refused. Omg!

Although, I have not even touched that Isis cd, or any others for the fact. The only one I've been listening to is Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come.

Its so amazing. For a hardcore band, its just soooo diverse. Everything about the album is so good. Best hardcore cd, ever. And it tough to call them just that. These Swedes combine evev some industrial elements, and are very progressive at times. One song contains violin, and its just beautiful.

Seriously guys, get this cd. It really did foreshadow 'The Shape of Punk to Come'.

Well just dont look at the guitar, what makes the album so great is the complex structures of the songs and the musicianship on the album. Songs to definitly check out are:

Parabola
Lateralus

I'm having trouble gettting the Palm-muted verse to Lateralus's rythym correct.

The tab says that the verse goes like this:

E|------------------------------------------------------------|
B|------------------------------------------------------------|
G|------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--7-5-3-0--0-3-3-3-3-0-0-0-0--5-5-5-5---------------------| x7
A|--7-5-3-0--0-3-3-3-3-0-0-0-0--5-5-5-5---------------------|
D|--7-5-3-0--0-3-3-3-3-0-0-0-0--5-5-5-5---------------------|
pm---------------------------------------------|

Can anybody help me get the rythym down? I've listened to the song countless times, but the rythym is just odd.

I was into APC before I started listening to Tool. Thirteenth Step is still one of my favorite albums ever. A really interesting progression from Mer De Nomes, which was really beautiful and gothic sounding. The first six tracks on that album are perfect, but in the latter half the album just kind of puttered out, with some good moments here and there. Thirteenth Step to me is just amazing throughout.

I'm not sure what you mean by progression. If you mean progressive rock, you listened to the completely wrong album for that. If you meant making progress as a band and progressing from their old material, then I see where you're coming from.

I don't think CWoA is a good introduction to the band, in any case.

I enjoy CWoA a lot, but, in retrospect, I really think they could have done something better, even with the songs they had. Rather than making songs like Zebraskin, Sang Real, and Jamais Vu pop songs, they should've Dredg-ed 'em up a bit more. :-/

Pop= popular music
unique song structures= not popular

In fact:
unique= not popular

Rubbish. Anyway, this debate is pointless, pop as a genre dosn't have a very defined sound, other than having characterists that make it accessable to a large audience of people. ie: Hooks, simple "catchy" melody.

Pink Floyd's Money is a great pop song, pop because it was their breakthrough popular single and was in the pop charts for a long time. Mostly in a 7/8 time signiture, or whatever, then changes to 4/4. Sounds "unique" in structure to me, but the way it's done it's very accessable and catchy.

Obviously it's progressive rock music, you know, hints of blues, has a sax, interesting structure, guitars doing off-beat things, used samples for one of the first times in popular music. But it's also a pop song.

In the same way that OK Computer is a great pop album. Thom Yorke insists they are pop songs, but they're done so arty and interestingly that i'd consider it more art-rock, hints of space rock, electionica, jazz, but i'm not going to go off on one if someone calls the album a pop-album.

Besides, CWA has very simple song structures, pretty much all the same, in fact. This is very un-progressive in characteristic, and very poppy. The only characteristics of progressiveness would maybe be some of the chords and chord progressions, and the way they incorporated their different influences together to make their fairly unique sound. Even so, it's not very prog, and definately has more in common with pop (being focused around catchy melodies and simple song structures and hooks). It's also rock music as well.

People and their genre debating and insisting something fits into one category (even a double-barreled one) exclusively can often be fairly naive. Often with more fresh sounding music, all you have is a case for a band or song being in a particular genre, but this dosn't necesserally mean there isn't a case for calling it something else too, and some bands... a lot of the ones i'm sure a lot of people posting here listen to incorporate so many different characteristics into their sound it's sometimes impossible to *completely* pin them down with a word or two.

Damn...I was just reading a few of the first couple pages of this thread, and I don't think many people actually get what TOOL is really about. Just because there are religious references in "Eulogy", doesn't necessarily mean that it's about jesus or god.....Maynard's just commenting on cult-leaders like L.Ron Hubbard, evil liars like George W.Bush, celebrities, etc. etc. Whoever people decide to look up to and put upon a pedestal and worship.....you know those televangelists that people send all of their money too....the people that leave people with that empty(no-hope)feeling only to build hope back up in their image. It's all applicable to whatever you want it to be. I find it funny that Maynard was trying to warn everyone about Scientology and the evils of it like 10 years ago, and only now is it recognized as an evil corporate scam that has murdered people for money, taken on the IRS and won, and the "inner-circle" of this "church" have their hands in ALOT of other **** as well.

It's probably the most progressive and artsy piece Tool has ever written.

Wait, isn't today January 3rd? According to "Maynard" on Toolnavy, something whimsical and fantastic is supposed to occur today. I'd better go check Best Buy to see of the album was secretely released.

Oh wait, that Toolnavy page was just another hoax by another pathetic fanboy? I'm shocked that it wasn't authentic!

Hasn't he always combined use between electric and acoustic?

Definitely. He uses them for tabla parts (he uses real tabla in studio though), and heaps of other parts, like in The Grudge before "clutch it like a cornerstone". I love his use of them, he only adds a little bit to each song, not sounding artificial.

I'm getting tired of this.

Toolband is getting updated less frequently now and it seems that the momentum that was gained with the release of the singles has now slowed again.

While it is annoying to have one of your favourite bands CD's take forever to come out, just listen to other bands and get some other new CD's, and when theres some official news, you will know.

I'm sure a lot of people havn't been waiting since 2001 for a new CD, most Tool fans on here seem to be post-Lateralus people, or Lateralus era, and took a while to get their old CD's as well, so they havn't been without new Tool for *that* long. It could be worse, for loads of artists you have to wait a couple of years or so.

I'm just listening to a lot of Opeth lately, and can tolerate waiting now, because I know it's going to be very soon that I have my hands on the new album.

I bet we get some negative reviews in the first few days of the album being released. I just think people are going to put their expectations on a really high level, and if they're not immediately met with something they consider amazing they'll be disappointed.

The album will be worth the wait, I'm sure of it. It's Tool. I trust them to evolve as much as they've said they have.

This will prolly be either second to last or the last of Tool's album releases. The rate they go out, although it does help them create music, is too slow for much else of quality.

On a somewhat tool-related note, while we're all waiting for their album, Puscifer (another one of Maynard's side projects) will have a new song called "The Undertaker" on the Underworld Evolution soundtrack. Most of the rest of the soundtrack looks awful, so I'd just download it.

Pretty much anything Tool makes on video is either highly influenced in acid trips of a highly hyperactive director, or the creepiest piece of animation you'll ever see. Ever.

I was young when I first watched... uh... yes it was Schism, actually, and I thought it was pretty disgusting. 3 years later, I downloaded it and played it for about a week or so everytime I sat on the computer. ah memories. :)

Anywho, Parabol/Parabola video is pretty rad as well.

Well all I know is that they're a brother-sister contortionist act, they were actually on stage during a lot of the Lateralus tour. They're in Men In Black II (or is it the first movie...?) somewhere, too.
