Marshall- That still sounds cool, heh. How long do you get to play for, and what did the guy who won perform? They gave me an extra minute because of all my crappy luck, so I got 4 in total. The dude that one was just flat out better than me. Him and I could play the same groove, and his could sound 1000 times better, just from his dynamics alone(Something that takes years to perfect) And his control was unreal! He started going through the rudiments at an insane tempo while flamming every 3 note of each rudiment :O Pretty crazy stuff.
Im still happy I made it this far. They had 10 drummer from all of florida, and I got to represent the Tampa store.... Me = Happy haha

In parantheses I said something like "Perhaps he just slathered it in some echo/reverb effect." I doubt it's actually a loop, but there's some effect that lengthens it a few seconds.
Either way, PinkFreud was pretty out of line to say what he said in the first place. (BASTARD! :p)

I've just noticed that both Sam Goody and Amazon have two separate DVDs listed for the December 20th release: Schism AND Parabola.
Does this mean that each DVD only has the corresponding video, or is this two different packaging for each DVD? Both are the same price ($9.98).
I thought this release was pathetic with both videos on the same disk, if there is now only one video per disk, my opinion of the Tool commercial machine would be greatly diminished.

I think you can actually hear the looping on The Grudge. At one point his scream gets slightly lower in volume, as if it starts again. This could just be the recording though, I know a guy who says he screams longer live.
Darkness
11-20-2005, 06:56 PM
Yeah I've seen Maynard do that live to, (bootlegs) and I wouldn't be surprised if it was real in the recording, but I also wouldn't if it was fake. At around 7 seconds into the scream you can hear him start to loose then note then bring it back up again... so I donno.

Technically, it's D major. It's just in the Dorian mode(Which is a major mode) the majority of the time, which sounds like a minor key.

11-21-2005, 02:34 PM
Sorry Jake, but I'm the theory n3rd around here.
Tool's songs start mostly in D Dorian which is neither major nor minor but has elements of both, also the most common in rock music. One thing people forget is that the songs go through lots of key changes too.
All scales are modes but two are used more than all the others, Aeolian (minor, and natural minor in most metal) Ionian (major). A mode is a series of notes in which there is one principal note (root) to which all the others are related. The first and last notes of a mode define the key or tonality. The step pattern which defines the sound of a mode can be generated by simply taking a scale, the major scale, for example, and by changing the note the modes start and end on. Because there are seven notes in the major scale, there are seven places to start a scale. So there are seven modes that can be derived from the 7-note major scale. Each of the seven arrangements of notes will have their own distinct sound.
So Tool does usually base their songs around D Dorian, but Dorian is not a type of major scale, in fact it's more commonly associated with minor scales.
Toaster
11-21-2005, 02:41 PM
Yeah, I always thought Dorian had more of a minor feel. I'm pretty sure it has a minor 3rd, the only difference between that and Aeolian is the raised 6th. I may be thinking of a different mode though.

I can make out a dunlop wah, a boss digital delay, a boss chorus emsemble, a boss tuner, one of those wierd effects things that John Paul Jones out of led zeppelin used (the thing that looks like organ pedals), two what appear to be boss mega distortion pedals(which seems kinda wierd), and some pedals are blanked out, also i think I can see a small stone phaser , he also stopped using the Boss flanger, its not in the pic and it isnt behind the black either.

one of the perks of maynard's voice is how he pronounces the word "lie," almost like it rhymes with "boy."
like in Intolerance: "You LOY, cheat and steal, LOY cheat and steal, LOY cheat and steal, and yet I toleraaaaaaate."

I don't hear that at all. I do hear that type of pronunciation in Korn's singer's voice.

Very wierd. Now Jones is using a chorus pedal and Justin is using a flanger? That seems backwards from previous years, heh. Where exactly did you find these pictures?
Ian- I think it's because of the style in which he delivers the "lie." If you pronounce it as it should while singing in that very guttural, distorted tone, it sounds rather "girlish," for lack of a better term. :p LOY sounds darker, I suppose.
repcak- When he said "behemoth," he was referring to the size of the Oklahoma live show, not the band. :p

Oh, definitely. On Opiate and Undertow, he had a rather one diminsional style, but now he can do his whole nasal croon thing, and he has also greatly improved the technique with which he started off with. He has a very mature voice, and also a very unique one at that.

Herb- Listen to the bass intro of 46&2. I'm not sure how to describe it, but just listen carefully, and that's what it does. More guitarists use chorus than bass players, but that ought to give you an idea of what a chorus pedal sounds like. It just creates a different sound. It's often used in a clean setting, but it can also be used wonderfully with distortion.

I learned what a chorus pedal is by trying it out. Just look online, and they have demos of pedals, and what not. One time I was at the music store, just playing around w/ the pedals for like a half hour, and then I had to go. I want to get some effect pedals so bad, but I have no money. :upset:

So right now, I'm downloading a 6 track Tool bootleg from Soulseek. The songs are Stinkfist, 46 & 2, The Grudge, Prison Sex, Push it, and Schism. I've only listened to Stinkfist so far, and it's quite awesome. Of course, it's typical bootleg quality, but it's very cool to hear the different version of Stinkfist. Adam does some awesome improv-style stuff to spice up the main riff. The second verse, Maynard sings different lyrics(I beleive they're from an Elvis song), and the added segment after Adam's "solo" is great. :p
EDIT: It's "Live in San Diego," in case anyone was curious.

Yeah, we have to pay lots, this way they can bathe in expensive plum sauce.
I don't know how many of you have done this but it's really amazing i took it from toolnavy.com
Well, here´s something to amuse and amaze you. I will write these instructions in steps, so don´t read it all at once, if you dont want to spoil it before you try this on your own. But I´llsuggest you to read this whole thing even if youhave "solved the puzzle", to see how far I could take it.And I´m sorry if my English is ****ed up at some points.
Well here goes:
Step 1:
Take that black slip covering the actual album package and turn it around so
you can see the track listing. Now take the inner sleeve and open it up, so you can see the man with the pentagram stuck in his throat. Use only this and the following page, fold back the last page (Bottleopenerpage, so it wont distract you.)
I prefer these two pages on for certain reasons. Next you´ll have to put the inner sleeve on the top of the tracklistblackslipthingee. Now as you´re beginning to position the inner sleeve to thecorrect position, remember to keep the inner sleeve page´s edges and the black slip´s edges parallel (this does not mean
that the inner sleeve edges should be on top of the black slip edges, they´ll just have to be parallel). Now youshould make the man´s tip of the nose touch the little quadrangle which is followed by a text:Triad.
Step 2:
With this positioning hold the slip and the sleeve against a light. Now you can see through the man.
Step 3:
If you´ve done the positioning as I did it and told you to do, then you can see certain things. You´ll see certain lines coming out from certain positions of the man´s face.
Step 4:
Faaip de oiad-line is coming from the mouth. (notice the pentagram)
Reflection-line is connected into the eye of the man. (I personally think that eye has a lot to do with reflections)
The little Disposition-X is in a small cavity (?) in the man´s forehead.
Lateralus is connected to the brain. (Thinking, thinking)
Step 5:
And now look on the top of the man´s head. There is something.
Step 6:
Reminds me of a crown. Keter? Or the crown of negativity?
Step 7:
Turn the page.
Step 8:
Definitely Keter. But on the other hand Ticks & Leeches are pretty close to the crown. Maybe it is the crown of negativity.
Now I´ll have a little extra fun for you.
Now that you have positioned the man so the GOD is crowned. Well there´s more crowns. Now flip the sleeve around so that you see the GOD from end to beginning "DOG", GOD as a mirror image, you know. Now above the crown that we found last time, you can see another crown. Now position the "DOG" in the exact same manner as you did with the GOD(The crown a little inside his skull.
If youve done this correctly, youll see a line connected to the man´s mouth. This aint no ordinary line. Well, youll, find out the rest.

I doubt those covers will be the final covers for the DVD. They seem way too simplistic for Tool standards. :p Plus, the Olde English seems rather out of place considering Tool usually stick to their signature "melting letters" the majority of the time nowadays.

As has been stated on several occasions, Tool need our money so that they can bathe in expensive plum sauce. Really man, gotta pay attention to these things....

I overreacted, no one beats fiddy, but seriously releasing two DVD's with easilly attainable videos SEPERATELY seems like they're just miliking the fans.I hope this bonus material is well worth the separate buy.

Tool are not even close to "money-grabbers" in the least. If they wanted to make a lot more money then they'd advertise more, do more interviews, and would make more melodic music.
They're simply putting things out to appease the fans...as the due-date for the album was pushed a lot further back than the fans anticipated...

I won't buy those DVDs. Those are a joke in my opinion; just something to milk some money out of the fans.

But the album isn't coming out next week, it's coming out in 2 weeks. You didn't read the newest update from Blair? They are delaying it one week because the stars won't be aligned correctly next tuesday.

Oh, I guess I missed that part, then.
If I've waited this long, I can wait another week.
Carry on.

Amazon has just posted a list of CDs to be released on January 3rd...anyone want to guess who's not listed?
Even if the band are finished recording, they haven't a clue when they're going to release the album. It takes time for Adam to draw eyeballs.

The Ænima artwork was done by Cam De Leon, and Lateralus was done by Alex Gray. Both are amazing artists, but I tend to prefer Alex Grey, just because his style is just way more original than pretty much anything I've ever seen. Someone of you who appreciate the Lateralus artwork should check out his site sometime.
