hey everybody, I'm not new here, I usually just lurk and don't contribute or anything, but, as douchebaguettey as it might sound, I lost my copy of Aenima, so I was wondering if somebody could possibly upload it and send it to me.

my email is sparklepinknick@gmail.com, and this would seriously be like insanely appreciated.

pce out.

oh, and tool is awesome.

Agreed. Adam's rhythmic riffs are much better than any shred solo any day.
If Adam did shred, I'm sure he'd make it fit well. He's not self indulgent and he'd only shred to improve the song so if he thought it would improve the song I think he'd do it to the best of his ability.

"Shredding" and "self-indulgent" are synonymous.

I honestly don't know where all this dislike for shredding comes from.

Like any musical technique, it works if done well.

Moses

"Shredding" and "self-indulgent" are synonymous.
Only if you think of it that way. I think alot of the solos that Jeff Loomis and Steve Smyth do on This Godless Endeavor aren't that self-indulgent but they are hard stuff, too.

Same with Debussy or Chopin, would you call them self-indulgent?

Kage
11-06-2005, 12:28 AM
I stand by that shredding is self-indulgent, in any form. Whether it sounds good or not is another question. Mostly it doesn't, sometimes it can.

Generally, I've never liked shredding on a guitar. It just doesn't sound good to me.

Moses
11-06-2005, 12:33 AM
The sound of a thousand high notes going through my ears a second is almost theraputic to me. Rusty Cooley, while being the most self-indulgent guitarist to ever walk the earth, does some cool hypnotic things with 2-string sweeps.

Kage
11-06-2005, 12:36 AM
Well, you just proved my point then. He's self-indulgent, but that doesn't mean it sounds bad. For me, I usually can't stand shredding guitar (Nevermore often being an exception :)).

Moses
11-06-2005, 12:38 AM
On Enemies of Reality they got way too technical with the solo's even though they have some awesome riffs. They really saved their career with the new album.

Kage
11-06-2005, 12:58 AM
The solos on that album are some of my favorite of that style, no doubt. I've come to really love the whole album.

Machine Head...

I tried it on both Winamp and WMP. The file type changes on which media player I use, when it is on 'open with winamp' it says it is a Winamp video file and on WMP it says video clip.

Pig Destroyer-Towering Flesh
Aborted-Whole Goremageddon album
Pig Destroyer-Starbelly
Converge-Pretty much the whole Jane Doe album

Sorry if you've already tried most of those. But that's usually just what I put in when I get pissed. I've been going through alot of that also, so I can sort of relate.

Aborted-Goremageddon is seriously brutal though, especially the song The Saw And the Carnage Done. Hope you get some kick-*** inspiration somewhere/from those songs.

And I'm still on the ever-lasting search for the most insane breakdown ever. So when I find one, I'll let you know for future reference.

EDIT:Also, All Else Failed-Route 1 is pretty awesome stuff too. It has a good breakdown if I remember right, and a big thing where it gets kinda soft and angsty sounding, in a good way.

K. I probably will.

Good luck with the Animal Cruelty thing man. From what I've heard, its been sounding really awesome. I'm not really sure on what I'm trying to get my band to sound like. I want like a mix of Hardcore, Metal(Death, MElodic death, Post, maybe some doom), wrap it in some prog, and maybe throw in some jazz interludes. And lots of breakdowns!

I really want to sing. Its always been a little secret dream of mine. I just need to work on it...all. And get a good scream aswell. I hope I can do it. Out of all the singing 'candidates' for the band, I truely believe I have the most potential, but that's just me. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Same here, I love showing people what I'm capable of, and I think showing emotion through screaming is one of the coolest things a person can do. Screaming in a band of course though

But yeah, bands like Pig Destroyer, Converge, All Else Failed, and other metalcore bands do that great. And I want the intensity of their shows in one of mine, and I think I can do that ;)

Well, I like the first two lines, but the third is a bit cliched and doesn't seem to fit well. You might want to try and rewrite it somehow. Opposites shouldn't really be used that close together, except in some special cases.
The next part sounds almost Opeth-ish, but I don't think I dig the list thing. Consider something like messing around with the order; "The plans and ideas now forgotten, exorbitant ties cannot decipher." Or something to that effect.
Just some suggestions though...

Hope this helps :)

Very cool. I especially like the tone of the second part of the poem. It's similar to the way I write when I do write poetry, which is not very often at all.

EDIT: Otherside gave some useful advice. Keep the tone and ideas of the poem, work on the diction. :)

Cool, thanks.

I agree with the 3rd line. I don't like it.
Personally, I agree with Kage on the 2nd part. I like to write like that. That's kinda how I would write lyrics to a song, and I try to sometimes think of a poem in a song's setting.

I have one poem that I've written that I'm really proud of. It's just kind of free form. I never write to a certain set of guidlines or form. I wait until I have a certain emotion, and one phrase or word that I really like and then build it around those two things. Sometimes it's good, most times it's not.

"Some of you having been emailing about the "Schism" DVD that's being advertised on several websites with a release date of December 20th. To answer your questions as to whether or not I can confirm this, the answer is that, while I can't confirm that EXACT date, the plan is to release a DVD featuring the videos for Schism and Parabol/Parabola with added extras (more details later) sometime in DECEMBER of this year. So, the December 20th date looks pretty good for the Sam Goody's type chains, and when more specifis become available to me, I'll post this additional info in the news section. PLEASE NOTE that this is NOT the (much anticipated) Tool live DVD, which will be released at some point, although exactly when is still a great unknown."

It's about this completely innocent, good-looking sailor whom everybody likes...except (the plot thickens!) of course, this one guy (Claggart) who is jealous of his good looks and charm. Now, Budd's innocence also leads him to be being very naieve, and never realizes that Claggart dislikes him through Claggart's subtle hints. Anyway, Budd is perfect except for one flaw: when he gets flustered or angry, he stutters severely. So Claggart, determined to extract revenge on Budd for nothing in particular, accuses Budd of rousing mutiny on the ship. When Budd is confronted, he is so angry and confused that he can't even speak, so he lashes out and kills Claggard. Despite the captain's love for Budd, he declares that he should be hung, blah blah blah.

And there's all this very thin, weak allegory to the story of Jesus Crist and Adam's fall from the garden of Eden. But, like I said, it's all very weak to me. And the author's explorations into the "nature of evil" through Claggart are so weak and un-insightful that it's laughable.

Indeed. The DVD could be $5, and I'd still miffed that the band presume that they are honoring us with a DVD with two videos. After months of speculation about releases of various items, they "quench" our curiosity with two videos? I'm less than impressed.

And to your comment that if I don't like it, I don't have to buy it: that's profoundly suggestive. I hadn't actually believed that I had an option of not purchasing this nonsense until you said something. Thanks mate, you've changed my life.

I'm not planning on getting this dvd at all. Same with the live one, although I'll probably rent it.

I'm at home on a Friday night while all of my other friends are at either a party or a concert. This sucks. Although, I am making some good process on the first song I'm writing for my band. I went down from Drop-d to Drop-c in the tunings. I don't know why, but the tone you get when you play drop-c type stuff is just awesome to me. Its basically a metalcore song too.

I'm thinking more progressively in writing style, and not necessarily having a chorous to the song. Maybe a few similar melodies here and there guitar wise, but you know what I mean. Its much harder writing in this style, but the outcome should be good. I'm now writing the breakdown(1st one at least) which is going good, but I'm lost as to where to go after that. Mainly, I'm trying to decide if I should have a solo or not. I'm not sure if I should. This is friken hard to decide on. I used to be all about the solos, but now realized that a lot of them are just useless wankage that only takes away from the song. If I don't do a solo though, I'll probably put in some melodic guitar harmonies and the sort. I don't know. It'll probably come out completely different than I'm thinking.

When they don't elaborate on what the "added extras" are, it usually means it's some interview with the band answering questions we've all heard the answers to before. Especially when they say NEW TOOL DVD WITH PARABOLA VIDEO and some added extras.

This song probably won't be too progy now that I get further into it. Maybe I'll save that for some other songs. I don't know, I'll see where it goes.

Right now I'm deciding if I should put the breakdown after the chorous(I probably won't actually repeat the chorous at all, but its kinda catchy like a chorous so I'm calling it that), or put another verse(a more melodic one) before that.

I'd say the song is somewhat Unearth style. Well, just metalcore style really. And I'm still wondering if I should do a solo, and if I do, where to put it. Hmmmm...

I agree completely...well said mate.

The most recent update on the official website indicates that Adam may not have time to sit in on some other projects because he is working on album art and video related stuff. Does this suggest that recording is finished? Blair didn't say he was busy recording, but with artwork.

I'm a little confused. When Tool were finished recording Lateralus, they released a statement. It was January 23rd (I believe). They even released an album title, Systeme Encepahle (or something to that effect), although it was clearly changed. I have two statements to make in light of this information:

1. They finished recording 5 months before Lateralus was released. Does this mean that we have to wait 5 months in post-production?

2. If they are finished recording, why not tell us? Why all of the secrecy?

I don't want him to go to B. I prefer the regular Drop D signature sound that I'm used to. I hope he isn't too low on the album for very many songs.

A lot of people don't like the feel of a seven string. If you tune it down, it keeps the feel of the six-string with a seven string sound. Of course, Adam doesn't do it properly, so when he plays songs in B, the intonation of the guitar is completely different. It could be a bad thing, but he makes it not. :)

Yeah, that's what I thought. Because I was pretty sure the Silverburst was his main axe, and he doesn't play in B that often.

Could you further explain this?

I have a tab for Parabola, and the tuning is B E D G B E. In other words, the lowest 2 strings are dropped down, but the higher 4 remain the same. Is this what you were referring to, or is the tab that I have just wrong?

All their drop B songs = Prison Sex and Parabola, right?

It sounds "looser" so-to-speak.

To do it properly, you would have to buy thicker gauged strings that are designed to be that low, and adjust the nut of the guitar to work with those guages.

Adam just tunes the strings down, and doesn't use the thicker gauge strings and adjust his guitar accordingly. In this way, the intonation and tone on Adam's guitar when he uses that tuning is quite different, but it sounds really cool, in my opinion.

Slapping and popping is a lot of fun if you have no amp and want to hear yourself playing better. I wish I was better at it, but I'm mainly focusing on building up my two-finger speed like Steve Harris.

I don't use a pick but it sounds good when guys like Chris Squire and Justin Chancellor do it. Except for the times when JPJ and Entwistle also chose to use picks, there are really no other pick players that I really enjoy.

It just doesn't really seem like bass to me. Sometimes I like the sound of it, but like I said, it gets lame really fast. I love the way Geddy Lee plays bass, and he plays with speed in certain songs, but he's still playing it like a bass. Slapping and popping in rock music is just really obtrusive, in my opinion.

If you are going to look at tabs for a tool song, you are not good enough yet. Spend time on Rudiments, or something that matters. Than learn the songs by ear once it is trained. Playing to a song isnt learning to drum. There are basic fundamentals, as with anything that are more important than learning a passage to a track.

Fag who says I got owned by the idiosyncratic system of anty-functioning hypocratic-orkiness aka "BetweenTheCheeksof-his-own-mom"- Wow.

Everyone who e-raped this man for having no brain- Great going. Further proving my point, anyhow. :p

How big is the file? If you choose to YSI it, you might as well send it to me.

spiralout7@gmail.com

If you just end up sending it to me people via msn, then never mind. It's probably not worth my time in the first place, heh.

Marshall, what did you end up playing in the drum off? Basically had to improv my *** off. I kept breaking everything! The bass pedal slid off the first clave bracket. I broke the Rod on the second bracket. After that I got pissed and said screw it, Then I played with no "feel", as fast as I could, REALLY LOUD to show my anger

I did throw in some tool style fills and grooves, I basically did the grudge tom groove if it was written in 11/8 (Did a little something different)

I haven't, but I'm an exception. Dialup isn't internet any more. Yeah, it sucks man! Im getting tired of this crap! 3 kb per second. And when i surf while Dl'n it goes to 1.4 :Purpledudeinshock:
