heh i think u guys should relax a lil and stop scrutnising every detail in everythin you see. whos that guy with the big hair?
That's Buzz Osbourne, lead singer and guitarist of Melvins!
Melvins, in case you didn't know, are an awesome band. They invented grunge, so they're obviously a big influence on Nirvana. In fact, Kurt was so grateful that after his band got huge, he helped Melvins get a record deal and even co-produced/played on a few tracks on Houdini.
Melvins are a combination of Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, and Metallica. That's as best I can put it, they're really slow and oppressively dark, but not quite "doom metal" dark, you know? Buzz has a very distinctive guitar tone, not unlike Adam Jones (the tones don't sound the same, but I mean they both have instantly recognizeable ones).

Didn't they not start using eight stringers until the time between Chaosphere and Nothing?
Oh and Frederik Thorendal (sp?) is definitely an underrated genius.
Yeah.
and, Yeah.
Ian- I think it's cool how Jones basically uses the same core setup as quite a few metal and rock guitar players, (Mesa Rectifier/Boss distortion) yet he still creates such unique tones.
Yeah.

Actually, he uses a Mesa, a Marshall, and a Diezel at the same time. Heh. But, yeah, his tone is really unique.

Ehm, it took a little while for me to get into it. I listened to ( ) once through and then shelved for about two months, but when I took it back out, I was amazed to see how much it had grown on me. Regardless, it's worth it to get into them. Their new album is great too.

I have a song that you might like if you listen to it all the way through. It's not all chaotic, Dillinger Escape Plan put a bit of ambience in some of their songs and they're quite good at that as well. There's quite a bit of substance, especially on the EP with Mike Patton.

Imagine the typical thrashing around of your average metalcore band, but speed it up 5X and have the guitarists play something impressive for once. The drummer's set couldn't have more than five pieces, but he plays with the intensity and busy-ness of a death metal double-bass thumper. The singer looks like a bodybuilder and he stares into the crowd for minutes at a time without blinking, and he also throws water bottle into the audience (like a homing missile) and generally looks pissed off the whole time while screaming his guts out.
I heard some Gigantour crowds weren't into the band because they didn't play your typical power/prog/heavy metal, but in Pittsburgh everyone was into them.

You'll have to get it from eBay. It's on there, it's just a pain in the arse to get. A lot of the versions for sale in Aus are the VHS version, which I doubt is the one your after. Ugh, their live show is what turned me off of them. Excessively noisy, the drumming was downright obnoxious, and I couldn't hear anything except a layer of noise around everything. Anyone heard the TS demo Kool Aid Party? That song rules. It features Mike Patton on vocals. I heard that long before the TS album came out, and I really loved it. So far everyone else who I've talked to that's seen them live has conflicting reports to mine. Maybe the sound was off at the venue. I don't see what made the drumming amazing, though. Yeah, he played fast and as many notes in one second as he possibly could, but that doesn't constitute amazing to me. I think his drumming both live and on the album completely does not fit with what's going on with the other instruments. Live, I just wanted to shoot the guy in the head and make him stop with his excessiveness. It wasn't even cool, either. Like when the Opeth drummer did a really fast solo, it sounded great. But his crap was just...ANNOYING. Between every song he would pound out this piece of crap drum solo. Then they'd blast into another noisy, feedbacky song and my ears just wanted some peace for two seconds. I also think that Team Sleep as a band tries to be ambient, but doesn't really accomplish it, and the instrumentation isn't near interesting enough to make up for the lack of atmosphere. There's way better music out there that is similar to what I think they're trying to accomplish, but way more well done. Besides, Chino needs to go back to Deftones.
I used to think that about APC, but they grew on me. Now I'm in love with The Package.

When'd you see Opeth, Kage?
A week before I saw Porcupine Tree, so almost two weeks ago. Great show.

 This is my second time seeing Pelican live, and they just blew me away both times. The second time I saw them they were better, simply because they were in a much butter venue with good lighting and everything. Their live sound is totally unreal. During the build up of Last Day of Winter, one of the guitarists used a violin bow on his guitar to create these surreal sounds. And when they broke out...Oh, and the chaotic ending of March Into the Sea was completely amazing. Autumn Into Summer was an orgasm the entire time.

So I just recorded a few riffs of mine that me and a friend will hopefully be recording on his near professional(\:D/) recording gear this week. The first thing he told me when he heard it was "Porcupine Tool." Not sure if that's a good thing or not, but yeah, take a listen, then tell me how lame and simple it is. I recorded it in about 15 minutes, so that explains the clipping and sloppy playing, but it's just a taster anyways.
Mm, something tasty (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=332764) is the song I'd like a bit of feedback on.

Opiate: Old school ep, grunge-ish sound but you can see their progressive roots

Lateralus: Straight prog rock emphasizing ambience and emotion

One of my friends even thought I was a fanboy when he found out I liked Tool, but I knew he would probably like Undertow if he heard it.

the best way to introduce someone to Tool or any band is to give them a cd, or a burned copy. This way they can listen to it in their own space, and not feel like ur pushing on them or that you're just a fanboy.

Tell us what you think you've got. :)
This is probably wrong, but I took a shot. In my theory, • • • - • • - - • - - is using the Mayan numerical system. Check out this website:
http://library.thinkquest.org/J0112511/mayan_number.htm
The numbers are all determined by dots, lines, and a weird shape thing. I figured that maybe I'd try and see if the Tool code thing could possibly be using the Mayan numerical system. I tried it, but felt that there was too many possibilities with the numbers still, and that's where Adam's message came in. I tried to fit that in with the original Tool symbol thing to see if anything fit. I'm still working on it, but what I have so far is this (the symbols aren't going to line up properly. The original symbols from Tool's website should be pushed over one space, so the first dot is under and inbetween the the first 2 vertical lines):
| | | | . | . | | | |
• • • - • • - - • - -
Notice those 2 parts in the middle where the spaces are bigger than the others? Well, picture the line being on the bottom (5) with the dot next to it and the dot in Adam's code thing being on top of the line. That would create a 7. So, if you take the first 3 dots as indivual numbers, it would be 1 1 1. With the 7, it is 1 1 1 7. I think this is 11/17, personally. This is mostly all I've got so far. I'm trying to see if there's a 2005 in the next part. In the next bigger space, it's once again 2 dots and a line, except the line is on the right this time. Perhaps, the dot and the line form that weird looking shape that equals 0. However, when that symbol has a dot above it, it equals 20, which is how the dot in adam's message fits in. The next part that I'm thinking of doesn't seem to work too well yet. What I'm thinking is that maybe the line-dot-line also equals that strange symbol. It seems to represent the shape. This is really where my theory doesn't work because how can the symbol be represent by two different orderings of lines and dots? I'm not sure yet, just go with it. So, say that is the special symbol. It equals 0. So, that's 200, with one symbol left. The last symbol is a line, which is 5. So, it's 2005. The final number: 1 1 1 7 20 0 5, or 11/17/2005. The reason I felt like telling everyone this, isn't neccesarily because I feel my theory works perfectly 100% (it doesn't), but actually to see if someone else on here can contribute to this theory and see if they find something with the symbols that I haven't found. I'm sure there's smarter people on here than me. Possibly, someone can come up with a more convincing way of finding the 2005? :p I know I know, I'm just looking too much into it, I'm just bored, and I came up with this, and wanted to hear what you guys thought about it.

Can I be one of the few to say that Tool really didn't mean anything when Blair typed that crap up?
You can be whatever you want to be! :p Seriously though, why would Blair make reference to it in one of the newsletters also if it didn't mean anything?

OK, so lately I've been listening to a lot of Dredg, and I am absolutely love the songs 18 People Live In Harmony, Of the Room, and It Only Took A Day. I know the majority of people in here like them too, but really, how much?

No, no, no, Iai. The lyrics for Schism fit with the whole theme of the album Lateralus. I think that the overall theme of the album is reconciliation. I don't believe that Schism is referring to anything as specific as the centuries-old feud between Catholicism and Protestantism, or two different religions for that matter. I believe it is a more general exploration of relationships and human connections, and the way we are connected by love to one another. Schism addresses the need for communication between people in order for them to be compassionate and loving to one another.

Moses, that one you're working on for your band is really good!
I loved the main riff in it, it sounded kinda thrashy, and different from alot of stuff I usually hear.
When do you think I can hear it with vocals?
Once I have lyrics I'll do the vocals. I have lyrics and a vocal line for the chorus but I have a really stuffy nose so I really don't wanna try it yet.

No doubt. I will always remember when I went out for a pancake breakfast during one of my visits to the poor ole US of A and the only thing they had sitting on the table in the restaurant was corn syrup.
A deprived bunch, those Americans. Not to mention the gaping chasm in quality between our beer and theirs, but that's another debate entirely and I should try my best not to throw this thread too far off course.

You mean the one that supposedly happened a while ago? Nope I never saw it. Good luck, though.
EDIT: Oh, I didn't even realize how these were going to work. I thought it'd be kind of a back and forth argument between the two users or something, but I realized it's just a long write-up to defend them. Should be interesting.

11-04-2005, 12:28 PM
Thats my problem. I'm basically doing a short write up, but then it becomes more of a short 'whore your artist' style write up, instead of a debate. I think I'll leave it until I see someone else post thiers before I go all out with it.
Yeah, that's what I would do. Good luck with it, though. I'm interested to see how it all works out.
So you basically have to defend Tool against another band? Which band are you facing?

Agreed. Adam's rhythmic riffs are much better than any shred solo any day.
If Adam wrote his guiar riffs any other way, I wouldn't listen to Tool. His style is what clenches Tool's sound.
