Give it a day or two, then change it.

And you didn't explain why the "distinct possibility" of Tool touring with Isis will actually be a reality. Or were you just saying you want it to be a reality?

All signs seem to point to yes. Blair sort of said that a mini-tour is going to happen with Isis opening for Tool. It was really one of the few times he wasn't cryptic with an interesting new bit of info. Also, the members of Isis have visited Tool in the studio and been in contact with them.

Hmm... small tour. Sounds like I'd have to be doing some traveling to see them, but oh well. Hopefully they'd hit DC, which would be easy enough.

And I'll blame you when my spirit is crushed when this never happens. :p

I can't see someone not knowing who Opeth is. I mean they're a pretty bug band now. I'd say its really unlikely since they just did that big tour over the summer, and now they're doing their own tour (which I'm missing, twice).

Off topic, but since they're like Meshuggah, I'll share. I saw A Life Once Lost in a tiny bar on Wednesday, and they were incredible. I really expected them to be messy and sloppy, but they were perfect. Unfotunately Dillnger came on later and blew them away.

i've just figured out something on lateralus, well its like another alternative order..what i did was in Cool Edit Pro i got the songs and tried the Holy gift order, but it didn't sound right. Then i found another order, the one from that aiden dude, and i combined them to form my order of Lateralus which is 6,7,5,1,8,4,9,13,3,10,11,2,12 nice how DRT are still together you'll see why later...but in order to do it you must have either cool edit pro or adobe audition in order for it to work...alrighty first whenever
parabol(a) ends like at 8:36 thats when you start schism, when done right the last guitar part fits in perfectly with the hammer ons in schism. Then when the last note of the drums hits you start The Grudge, if you listen closely you can hear the intro to the grudge whenever schisms about to end. You then do the same for ticks and leeches. now heres the tricky part, you split ticks and leeches in half, exactly when the Soft part ends. Whenever the last note is played start Mantra, then start lateralus at about :16 in. then 9:13 in lateralus start Faaip De Oaid. the distortion at the end of lateralus should fade into the static at the beginning of FDO. next right when Faaip De Oaid ends start the patient. then at 6:41 into the patient start Disposition, the bass in the patient should kinda synchronize with the bass in disposition, lastly 10:06 into reflection you start Eon blue apocalypse, with triad coming in when eon blue ends with the strum. Finally at the end of triad you start The last half of ticks and leeches Bringing the Album Lateralus to a close.

With this i found that Lateralus is about someone finding inner peace, He first realizes that hes not alone ,parabol(a), then he seems to have trouble bringing the pieces to fit(schism), he then starts having grudges trying to bring them together and remembers in order to be in peace he has to let the grudges go(the grudge), he lets them out by using anger(hence the reason why ticks and leeches is an angry mood) and then comes closer to having piece(the mellow part), after being cleansed he starts meditating(mantra), lateralus explains him meditating and at the end spirals closer to god then hearing Faaip De Oaid, this is where he learns to become patient. He then has thoughts if he can wait it out, But has a disposition at the last second.
HE then comes to realize that we are reflections of some other being, like the moons light is only a reflection of the sun, so he destroys his ego and begins his apocalypse. In triad he HAS begun a journey to inner peace. THe ending which is the heavy part of ticks and leeches says to everyone that HE Has become closer to inner peace and wheter they like it or not it's what they're getting, which he then recieved.

This is my interpretation of the album Lateralus by tool if you have an opinion or need help about it just email me at parabol87004@aol.com. i'll be doing intrerpretations of individual songs later, but rihgt now i',m tired so LAterz/

that is an interesting theory and it obviously took a while but in all seriousness, you can do that with any songs on lateralus, practically all of them are in the key of D so they will all run into each other well.

maybe im just not seeing it but I doubt the band intended that order.

well done anyway.

Sorry to change the subject, but was the song that got you into Tool? For me it was Sober and Schism.
Same thing for me.

I remember when "Schism" came out. I wasn't a big fan of theirs but I did like them. My brother told me they had a new song, so I sat down and listened to it, and I remember being completely taken by surprise. I remember expecting something heavy, and while it was to me, my first reaction was that it had some weird tribal influence to it. Where did I get that from.

That sounds like it must have sucked, but I'd pay for weather like that. It's still in the 80s Farenheit here in Houston. I can't stand the heat much longer.

Sober got me into the band but the first album I bought of theirs was Aenima, which is still my favorite Tool album. Lateralus is definitely the second best, but doesn't has as nice of a texture as Aenima IMO, although the production is probably better.

But yeah, the key songs that got me into them were: 1 Sober, 2 Stinkfist, and 3 Schism...the obvious ones.

Pretty much, the exact same hing with me. I heard Sober on the radio, and it was one of those few songs that caught my attention, and I tracked it down to see who it was by(I did the same with Man in the Box by Alice in Chains, and Self-Esteem by Offspring[Yea, I like it. What?]).

I bought Aenima, and the rest was history. I think I still somewhat prefer Aenima, but Lateralus is coming very close to taking over.

Haha, we've got the exact same story here. I first heard Man In The Box in some movie a long time ago and it got me interested in AiC. Then i heard songs like Would?, Rooster, I Stay Away, and Heaven Beside You on the radio.

I agree. To enjoy the song you need to acquire patience for the structure of the song. Just like on Aenima I had to get used to songs like Push!t and Third Eye.

I got into Tool mainly through E-peer pressure. I didn't do so much as download a single Tool song before purchasing Lateralus. Just goes to show you how much faith I have in mx. :p

Just a sidenote- If anyone has Acceleration by Age of Silence, could you please YSI tracks 7 and 10 to my email, please? Spiralout7@gmail.com is me. Also, if you've not heard of these guys, they're an avant garde/prog band from Norway. If you're into any avant garde whatsoever, you should definitely check them out. Clean vocals, talented band members. I'd really consider them the Tool of Norway. Lazare is an amazing vocalist, their guitarist is definitely more of a rythm man than lead, and their HellHammer is a beast behind the drums. Granted, being an avant garde, they're a lot more out there than Tool, but I've really been digging them as of late.

There's no question whatsoever that Lateralus has better production. I prefer the drum sound of Aenima, His drums sound all tubby on lateralus.

If I had to pick one album where I think the drums stand out the most, I'd choose Lateralus, by far. They just sound so unique. Danny ties his influences in so well, and he really creates a very unique sound.

Dr. Jake Destructo
10-17-2005, 10:15 PM
Yeah, although there are songs on every album that I like. 46&2 probably has my favorite drumming on it, mainly because of the cool solo. I sat down one day, and made an effort at dissecting that part of the song, and here's what I came up with.

Drums: two bars of 7/8, one bar of 8/8. Repeat.
Guitar: One bar of 7/8, one bar of 8/8. Repeat
Bass: One bar of 8/8, one bar of 7/8. Repeat.
Me: Masturbate at 200 bpm.

You need to get laid.

I've decided(probably out of justification for my lack of a sex life) that "getting some" is overrated. There are far better things in life than living to try and get laid. This year, I realized that these pathetic losers who try and do every chick possible are the guys I despise. There's nothing wrong with having sex, of course, but what I mean is that basing your social life around how many times you get done is about as cool as *snicker* listening to Tool!

In an effort to tie my rant into this thread, I'm going to say that I think Jerk Off is about these kind of guys. I'm not really kidding about this either. I mean, just listening to the lyrics once with this in mind, and it kind of becomes apparent. Sort of...

I'm a big fan of Danny Carey's and think his drums sound great on each album, but what really stands out for me is the drumming on Lateralus.

Never before had I listened pretty much solely to the drums. Usually I would just listen out for the guitar/vocals and not take much notice of the percussion but with Tool they wouldn't let me.

Btw, I was SKoRioN but I made a new account as that was really old and created when I was a Metallica fanboy :(

Myself, I'm liking The Dillinger Escape Plan's "Panasonic Youth" lyrics:

"we wrote these plans. took the order. the architecture. and followed them to the end. til the gears ground cold and relentless. there was no remorse. we had none we kept on with no trace of a regret. there was no remorse. i never saw any blood. no soul for the body. watched them turn her scab covered skin into stone. like a coal in the sky. searching for the dawn for the last time. bloated with white eyes wide. we've come to an understanding - you lose/I profit. high noon and there ain't no secrets. no more excuses. now our number's up. let them lead us by the throat. now just smile while the rope pulls tighter. guilty is an understatement. the hourglass is never right side up. and all the time we try to tear the script up. forgetting all the sour for the sweet. the paragraph has never been so empty. the lifeless testtube. the mother dies with infant in arms. the lifeless testtube, look what she's done. evolution gave us a clock that's always winding down."

i can see the vocals turning people off to megadeth, i dont particularly like them either. but i just focus on the guitar work, which is awesome. i do that a lot actually, listen to music i dont REALLY like solely because of the instrumentalism. then again, maybe its not just the vocals that you dislike. haha.

What are your thoughts on Tool producing their own album? On the image of the audio reels that was posted on Adam's site a while back (which has subsequently been removed), the label on the reel cases reads Producer: Tool.

It has been confirmed that Joe Baressi is engineering their album, but I'm quite certain that Tool are producing it. Is this what's slowing them down?

i read yesterday an interview with trent reznor and his opinion about emule, iTunes, etc. He said that first of all music i overpriced (the cds) and the other problem is that in most cases (he said especially in the case of hip-hop) you buy a single for the price of an album... in most cases you will find 1-3good songs and the rest is ****.
Thats the reason why most ppl don't buy cds anymore... and thats the case why i listen to nin, opeth, tool cause its worth the money :thumb:

But of course, when free music is thrown right in front of me (like that goddamn YSI thread) it's incredibly hard to resist.

I doubt we'll get a new album before mid-2006 for that reason as well. Tool may want to surprise us, but seriously...news would leak from somewhere, quite probably the label. They couldn't keep something as big as a new Tool album secret from the public. Bear in mind that the new Tool album will probably be one of the biggest albums of next year, so the label will want to make some major profit on it.

Just out of interest, can anyone fill me in on a connectionbetween Tool and the Melvins? When I was writing the FA on Mike Patton, I saw that all 4 members of Tool appear on a song on one of their albums (it's track 7, but I don't remember the album name). It's in the FA if anyone's interseted, but I was just wondering what the link is, and whether it's actually true.

Right now all I can remember is that on the track You Lied from Salival, one of the Melvins played guitar along with Adam. That's all I got :\

I think we can get a good idea of when to expect some news based on what the band did with Lateralus. Compare the release date of the album with the release date of "Schism." Possibly, also when it was announced what the album was going to be called, etc.

I'm not sure how exactly they first came into contact, but the song you're thinking of is Divorced. I have it on that Tool bootleg I bought a while back. It's about nine minutes long and features a big drum battles between Danny Carey and the Melvins' drummer about midway through. It's interesting.
