This is one reason why I wouldn't want to have lightning fast internet- You'd be able to download a virtually unlimited number of albums, and therefore, you may overlook something good. I, being the stone-age bastard that I am, and will be for a while, listen to albums at least 5 or so times before either loving the album, or just putting it on my cd rack.

Yeah, I'd rather have excess albums I've not listened to, than not enough, though, so you win.
With my current budget, I'm definitely leaning toward the "not enough" spectrum. At least I have school and Fruity Loops to keep me busy.

Or the fact that you keep downloading and downloading until you completely run out of disc space. I'm almost out on both of my hard drives. It's so easy to download so much, and I can't stop myself.
Plus, I'm on a fairly old computer, and there's no hookup for an external hard drive, which I was about to buy.
I think I'll check at Best Buy to get Sideshow Symphonies, if it's not there, I'll just order it.

In the poll for best vocalist will lyrics be a factor, or is it just singing ability?
I hate lyrics. If it was up to me, nobody would be allowed to write lyrics except Paul Westerberg of The Replacements. So no, they don't matter. Otherwise it would be pointless to have Cedric of At the Drive-In/The Mars Volta in the contest.

I'd agree with YD on most cases as well. I don't really listen to lyrics all that much, unless I get really into the band, like Tool. I liked the music, then when I started learning about all of these unique concepts incorporated with the lyrics and the music, it made me appreciate them all the more.

Well i have to disagree with you there I cant see how someone could hate lyrics, i can understand people saying "lyrics are over-rated" because i do believe that lyrics arn't the be-all and end-all, in my opinion lyrics and singing are equally as important as music in your standard song, i mean how can someone not love the lyrics in say "reflection" for example, MJK" And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping, the moon tells me a secret - my confidant, as full and bright as I am, this light is not my own, a million light reflections pass over me" how can you not be inspired by that, how can you not think that the song is made infinatly better with those words, among many others? The lyrics are often great, but they don't "make" Tool's music. They come much after the rest of the band writes the music. The lyrics are merely there to reinforce what the emotion of the song is. I don't think an average band could have written the album Lateralus.

I could make 10 minute songs that are just me farting into a mic, that doesn't make me exceptional. And besides, i was talking average in terms of their musicianship, not in terms of "radio friendly" or not. Adam Jones is an average guitarist; he even admits he's not that great. Justin Chancellor, he's a good bassist, but nothing that any other experienced bassist couldn't do. Danny Carey....well, he's good. He's **** good. Maynard pretty much makes the band. He's practically turned his voice into a trademark--instantly recognizable. And with his (sometimes) insanely complex lyrics and depth as a vocalist, he's what pushes Tool over the edge of exceptionality

Except, Maynard doesn't write any of the music for guitar, bass, or drums. Try to find a way to listen to some of their songs without the vocals in it. I'd hardly call it "farting into a mic." You could make a 10 minute song that is just you farting into a mic and that doesn't make you exceptional. What kind of argument is that? That has absolutely nothing to do with anything at all. The truth is, songwriting is more important than showing off. Adam has been playing guitar for probably 15 or 20 years. You know what, I'll bet he can shred real fast. Just because he doesn't on their cds, it doesn't mean that he can't. Adam, Justin, and Danny are the ones who lay down the structure of the song and it's only later on that Maynard adds his part to it. He is merely 1/4th of the band.

Just because he doesn't on their cds, it doesn't mean that he can't. Adam, Justin, and Danny are the ones who lay down the structure of the song and it's only later on that Maynard adds his part to it. He is merely 1/4th of the band.
I'm just saying I'd think the music was incredibly boring without Maynard, i.e. if you made them an instrumental band. I hear the actual music and I don't FEEL anything (unlike Dream Theater, who I think create amazing music). However, with MJK's "one-fourth" added in, I feel that's the special touch that makes Tool the amazing band that it is. And I also think it's amazing the depth that he puts into his lyrics. I've read interpretations of Forty Six & Two that stretch on for PAGES, and it simply puts me in awe of his song-writing prowess.
So long story short: nowhere did I mean to imply that I don't like Tool (they're one of my 2 or 3 favorite bands) or that I don't really LIKE the music-writing (parts of Aenima make me want to jump up and beat the living crap out of **** [in a good way]), but it's the lyrics that attract me especially to them.

they are making great music! thats it. fantastic progressive-rock! they create an atmosphere in their music as only a few bands can reach...
All over its softer than tool... and when i am relaxed and don't want to hear 'heavy' stuff, APC is just perfect for this mood.
Another thing is, that 13th steps once helped me through my depression: most say its the way out of drugs/addiction... but for me its the way out of a depression. (isn't it the same?!)

Way to get the point. "Accessibility" has nothing to do with quality. Plus, even if it were the case, you need to respect people's opinions more. i think is stupid arguing if APC or Tool has more 'quality'. They make music on such a high level/quality that stupid folk (as we are) .... well, äh.... i mean - they are making both music on such a high level that it doesn't matter if tool is super-high-level or fantastic-high-level.

Vetoed.
...awesome, it wouldn't be half as effective without the build up.
That's my opinion though.
No **** sherlock.
Filler tracks are a great album breaker and add that extra bit to an album. Unlike most most people, I dont want track after track of the same style, and bands that at least vary their sound (like Tool, dont panic) can get away with it more.
But filler tracks are fun if done right, and are better on an album than some half hearted B-side.
Filler doesn't mean different style, but useless. Something not as good, not as lean mean or fast as the rest of the album. Something you could take out, save time listeningt o the album without and not notice the absence of. Filler is bad and never helps anything because if you don't notice it when it's gone it can't be that good inthe first palce.

Here's the cover of the new Tool album!(Note, "The album artwork will feature more editing. This is not the final cover! That's why it may look more or less fishy. The only difference will be some more color enchancing, and better font for the words"):
http://tinypic.com/eiwg85.jpg
The title "Meiosis" refers to the development of human life. Meiosis is the splitting of cells through sexual reproduction. On the cover artwork, notice the almost 'splitting' detail of the two masses. It symbolises how we as beings have evolved.
Basically, a cell goes through Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase. These are all the stages of Meiosis, and they are also all the track names on the cd! Pretty cool, eh? There's also a track called Cytokinesis, which technically is not a stage of Meiosis. Cytokinesis is when the two haploid daughter cells are formed as an end result. The songs will go in order of the phases. Basically, the maturing of the songs will grow, and there should be an insane climax at the end of the album.
"The cumilation of our many long, sweaty, and bloody days in the recording studio has produced an exorbitant, un-thinkable, collection of life-altering noise. I can't give away the secret just yet, but the new album will contain something that has NEVER been done before, as its been previously thought of as too treacherous to a human's health. We, TOOL, will single-handedly change the face of not only music, but the universe, with this new album."

Tool is hard rock/prog. They're not really metal, just about as hard as you can get without fully transfering to that realm. Sort of like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, or even Van Halen. Although I think Tool is even more clear-cut because they lack the strong guitar presence that usually defines metal, although the frantic drumming usually makes up for it.

The chat happened, sort of. I learnt the following:
250 in chat room is a bad idea.
Adam said Pre-production on the artwork for the New CD is happening now.
A tour with Isis is a distinct possibility.
Alex Grey will be involved on the new CD.
Danny says it's not a double ablum, and that the DVD will be out soon, with the implication it will be out before the CD.
Signed Lateralus Vinyl will soon be replacing the flaming wreckage that is my wallet/credit card.
Hi to Nemesis, Guitaryoni, Eclipse and anyone else that said Hi that I've forgotten!

Perhaps, Maynard is everywhere. When you breathe, breathe in the air, Maynard is there. He exists as an entity within the Oxygen. When you eat a box of delicious triscuit crackers, Maynard is inside. The cracker is the body, the flesh of Maynard. When you put the furniture in your place in a certain geometric pattern, Maynard is within your will and ambition.
Or you know...he could just be the singer of a cool band.

That's it. So it seems as if someone managed to hack into the band's personal chat or something. There's a transcript of that here: http://www.tooltabs.net/forum_two/viewtopic.php?t=1666
