Wow, I was really digging that Dream Theater song you have in your profile...but then it just got really bad. Man, it irritates me that Dream Theater squash the potential to make great music just for the sake of virtuosity. It was really cool when it was a simple build up, and then they go into the complex, intricate guitar parts and it sounds like complete junk.

I know, I've tried many times to get into Dream Theater. I just don't like them at all for some reason. I wasn't trying to knock you or anything, I was just giving my opinion on Dream Theater. Sorry if I came across like an *** or something.

I have to agree with you on some of your arguments here. Im also not definatly bashing DT here! (I own 3 of their dvds! ).
But to me it also sounds as if they sometimes throw away what acould have been great. And sometimes in their songs its just random melody afther melody, and sometimes just random keyboard-guitar playing.
I dunno if this made sence to anyone. Just my opinion anyway. :)

Will somebody please tell this kid that the beginning to Schism is all bass?! I swear he will die for his mistakes
Nah that's okay. I like Tool but I haven't posted in this thread before, ain't that strange? Parabol/Parabola is as good as it gets.
YouGottaBeCrazy
09-25-2005, 07:57 PM
Well, that review sucks anyway. I mean, come on, he called Parabol filler. However, the beginning of Schism is not all bass. The chords hit in the beginning is a combination of bass and guitar chords. The next part is all bass though. Is that what you meant? Oh, and yes, Parabol/Parabola is great. The way they are connected, the melodic singing, the awesome riffage, it just all comes together so well. I find Parabola to be one of the heaviest songs on the album musically, but the beautiful singing that Maynard does really makes a nice contrast to it, and it ends up somewhere in the middle in terms of heaviness because of it. Anyone else agree?

Hmm, upon closer listening, I guess there is a bit of guitar in the very beginning. But the reviewer is still wrong because he seems to think that's ALL the intro is. He somehow interpreted the faint guitar and rich bass double-stops are "extremely beautiful and melodic guitar." I think that does a bit of disservice to Mr. Chancellor. I bet he thinks the bridge of Parabola is also guitar when it's high-register bass melodies with intermittent guitar chords! Grr.

It really wasn't that bad of a review.
Yeah, it suffers from the unprofessionalism that most track-by-track reviews hold, and his English isn't great. I agree, Parabol and Disposition are NOT fillers, and Chester Bennington is not a better singer than Maynard. But all in all it's nothing to get your panties in a bundle over.

about the Alternative track listing for lateralus, i wanted to know, what you guys think about THE one with that aiden guy. i tried it and i get what he means by that but thats just me.
I think Triad is the only song that goes on too long. Reflection is amazing, and Disposition is just as good.

I don't see why we needed any more than one review. I remember seeing sputnik before I came onto MX and completely agreed with much of what bartender wrote. His review is the best by far.
YouGottaBeCrazy
09-26-2005, 01:51 PM
That's become one of my favourite songs on the album. Reflection and Triad go on a bit too long for me but I've never got bored of Disposition.
See, I wouldn't say Reflection goes on for too long because when I'm done listening to it, I feel very satisfied. However, I do think that the verse doesn't come soon enough. That's the only complaint I have with the song. If I'm in the mood to just relax and listen and not really pay close attention to the music, then I have no problem with it. Yet, if I'm riding in a car, and I want to get to my favorite parts of the song, I feel everything pre-verse could have been shortened by about 8 bars. Or maybe they're should have been more sound effects.

Aenima has the coolest song ever (Pu****) on it but i luv the maturity of Lateralus. My theory is that it's an album about the relationship between man and god. All the song lyrics seem to fit this theme and its the sort of thing that they wud do.

Glad to see another Tool fan on here. Honestly, your view on Lateralus is actually pretty good. I personally don't believe that that was what the band was going for, but what do I know? All the songs, technically, do seem to fit in with the idea of a man and his relationship with his god. I've never really heard that idea or theory before, but I like it. I do sense a lot of spiritualness in the lyrics actually. Plus, you know, the band says that Lateralus means "upward thinking." Taken literally, since the cliche is that heaven is above us and hell is below us, it could mean upward in the sense of God.

I doubt that actually. Mainly because of a lyric in the title track. "as below, so above and beyond, I imagine." This stems from an old medieval saying, "as above, so below," meaning what happens in heaven (or some other higher plane) reflects what's going on down here. Tool reverse this, obviously they place more importance in this realm.

Whoa now, anyone check out the Tool site? Newest update links to an advertising of electric drums that Blair says Danny uses extensively on the new record. You click on a button or two, and you get to look at it, read about it, while hearing a sample of someone (perhaps Danny?) playing it. It sounds really cool and I can't wait to hear what effects Danny will be using on the new album. If they're anything like what I just heard on the Tool site, then it could be something really cool (just as long as the electric drums aren't overkilled).

So, I was at the Orioles game tonight, and a little clip of an Elvis song comes on and I'm like, "Hey, I've heard that somewhere before". I realized its the little bit they play in the middle of Stinkfist in the OK show. So I came home and googled the lyrics "I'm caught in a trap...Because I love you too much baby", and low and behold, it is what they play in Stinkfist, its called Suspicious Minds. I found that rather interesting, and I haven't seen anyone post that, so I figured I'd share.

I really like this type of thought process towards their music. Though, I think the phrase of "upward thinking" goes beyond the restrictions of simple Heaven and Hell..
Tool were always the first to criticise the persona known as Satan, and Satan being the mythical ring leader of Hell, I doubt they find heaven or Hell as a basis for their thinking.. Besides, I don't think Danny Carey would bother with Satan or his opposing God..
Rather it's inner upward thinking. Self-improving and reaching a higher level of humanity and consciousness...46+2..
It's really shown in their fondness in Alex Grey and titles of their songs. You can even look at the comic genius of Bill Kicks and see where their thinking and beliefs lay..

That's awfully presumptuous of you to say that. I think pretty much all religious music in Western culture was condemning Satan many centuries before Tool or rock music in general was formed.
People like this were the reason I held off on visiting the Tool thread. I consider Tool to be a very good band, and one that I enjoy listening to, but their fans seem to have this cult surrounding the band. They twist the cryptic lyrics into this massive bombardment of spirituality and higher meaning that it really takes all the fun out of the music for me. Music doesn't HAVE to be a path to enlightenment, you can still enjoy it on many other levels without complicating things.
I realize that Tool is a very complicated band, and by over-explaining things I'm just digging myself deeper and deeper, so I'll try to stop. Phew.

I also agree with the aforementioned point about Tool being overwrought in terms of the meaning of everything they do. I think a lot of the songs are simpler than many here think. The lyrics are very good and meaningful to an extent, but they aren't brilliant.

In this world where words like awesome, brilliant, and outstanding are used on an everyday basis just to emphasize how great something is they kind of lose there meaning. The word awesome is hardly ever used to actually describe something that left people in awe and so on.
My point is to say and use the real definition of brilliant: Marked by unusual and impressive intellectual acuteness; that kind of does describe most of Maynards lyrics I think, and is kind of accurate.
Either way, I think that all these attempts to say that it isn't so good, or they aren't truly unique etc., is just us regulars in the thread trying to not be called fanboys. That's kinda lame, we all know we don't worship Maynard or herald them as the best band ever. That would be ignorant. But to say that Maynard's lyrics are unique or took some wit isn't. It's pretty easy to see that they are unique and often witty at times.
Meh, that almost sounds offensive now that I read it, but I'm just trying to make a point. I don't mean any offense.
I think Maynard is a great lyricist...but people take it too far, as we all know. It's fun to delve into the meanings of the songs, but lyrics shouldn't be taken as some almighty gospel of higher spirituality or being. They're lyrics to a rock song, and they are often cryptic, which is part of the fun.

That comment about Tool being the first to criticize Satan was wrong, but I don't think it was meant that they were the first in history. I think he meant more like they are always willing to come out and do so. It was just worded wrong I think.

You don't know what 69 is? It's actually really childish and immature (to be obsessed with the number, I mean. Not the act itself). That's what makes it so weird that Tool would do it, definitely no higher numerology behind it.

Also, Disgustipated appears at different track numbers depending on the version, or edition of Undertow. It says exactly where it appears on the Tool FAQ, but since tdn is undergoing some sort of makeover(gomf finally) I won't be able to tell you. :( I do recall reading track 10,69, and 100, though, but don't quote me on this.

They're far from boring live, but to each their own. It's not that amazing to be honest, either. How about some old Iron Maiden live shows, from BEFORE you were born? Or many other bands.
I recommend Lateralus era live shows over any others, Ænima era shows are prtety cool too, but they're just getting better and better.

In Tool he hides how he looks with body-paint, wigs, weird clothing, stands in the dark or in front of a TV screen, etc.
In APC, as they're more mainstream sounding he does similar things by wearing wigs and weird different clothing, glasses, etc. With APC he's even more the focus, so he goes to possibly greater lengths to protect his identity.
Obviously two different acts, so two different images. He said he joked about feeling schizo after APC tours and such.

Now, I see this statement as being sort of short sighted..
Every song that enters our ears stir some sort of feeling or thought. Most Tool fans are just willing to explain their views. Like church goers or gospel singers...the songs they sing could just be uplifting songs, or they can take on deeper meaning for those who want the meaning..
The same applies to Tool songs. Some connect with music on different levels. Musicians hear notes and rythme. Artists here beautiful images and sound. Philosophers here truth or ideas. Thinkers hear thoughts and points of view.
There is no shame in wanting to find a meaning in a music (in this case Tool), or understanding something in a different way than others..
The deeper you dig the more you learn, and this applies to anything..
Never take things for just what they are..
Question it..

As pretentious as he sounds, this guy is right. There really shouldn't be any shame if you want to learn where their song references are from and what you think the songs are about, you can do a lot of digging with Tool, and thats great, some people really enjoy it. I'm sure 95% of people who post in this thread have wondered about the meanings behind one or more of their songs, and maybe had a bit of a think about it.
So what?

Yeah, he sounds on the line, dosn't he.. It's mostly just the silly pretention and talking like you're educating people with your ways and have reached enlightenment.
I love reading song lyrics and analysing them and thinking about what they mean to me. People use these skills all the time in English classes to analyse texts and such, it's not that weird. And, for me, personally, they can help me to appreciate the songs more after I know what all the words are, and what the message of the song is about, and that dosn't just apply to Tool's music. Though, it's definately not essential, I really enjoy loads of songs I don't even know the words to. CoB comes to mind, hehe.
There's no denying that Tool create deep songs (Deeper than most artists, lyrically), and I see no reason why people shouldn't explore them further if they enjoy doing so.

The funny thing is this..
I didn't specifically refer to just Tool. I refered to music in general..
You on the other hand keep making me out to be *just* a Tool fanboy. But that's fine. For some reason I always see people come onto this board and they have to try and make a distinction between themselves and the "weird tool fans", as if they are going to be thrown out of the popular club if they don't..
So they say that it's stupid to try and look into lyrics and music in fear that a pop-culture nazi will beat them upside the head. But what does it matter if someone does..? Then they come back and say, "Well, you're doing the exact same thing Tool tells you not to do, and over analyse!" Again...and?
Music since the beginning of time was made to teach, stir feeling, stir thought, and tell stories. If a person just wants to listen to just music, put on some headphones, blast the techno/classical/soundtracks, and don't worry about lyrics..
Lyrics are words. Words have meaning. Therefore, there is always something to get from lyrics..
But you have your view and I have mine. I respect that. But you can't bash a person for finding a joy in listening to lyrics and music as a whole and getting something from it..
Thanks you to satchforever and Shadius for understanding..

~daniel

Saw Audioslave last night... holy crap. That show was f'ing incredible to say the least. They played a part of Bulls on Parade, all of Sleep now, Testify and Killing in the Name. Plus some Soundgarden songs and a crap load of Audioslave songs. It was amazing, Tom really can shred when he wants to, and that guys still full of as much energy as he was on the Self titled RATM DVD, believe it or not.
Oh yeah, and we had really good seat tickets, and some guy wanted to trade us his floor tickets because his girlfriend didn't want to stand up the whole time... (even though they could have just sat in seats anyway..) so naturally we took the tickets and got onto the floor. :thumb:

I saw an interesting King Crimson DVD a while ago. Apart from the normal live show, it has a little feature where you choose a vocalist, soloist and rhythm section for 21st Century Schizoid Man out of any Crimson era. Alas, I didn't get it. It was interesting feature, but I didn't particularly think the normal songs on it were worth buying a DVD for.

It 's looking pretty good for another OCTOBER 12th CHAT PARTY with the MEMBERS OF TOOL for you members of the 'Collective.' We did this last year, had some fun, so I thought we'd try it again (I'm sure you TA guys will think of something to ask them about). Along with the members of the band, it's also your chance to chat with some of their musician friends, including the members of BUTCHER (Sasha, Camella, Reeder & more), kaRIN and Statik of COLLIDE, Aaron and some of the guys from ISIS, Buzz and Dale of THE MELVINS, some PLC folk and VOLTO! As soon as I get the Silver Coleman back from Heather's, and figure out who's going to take charge of the grill, I'll get back with you with more details. "
