I never really thought of Tool as metal. The one category I define them as are Progressive/Ambient/Modern Rock. Too hard to fully classify.
20,000 posts just gone and nobody marked the occasion!?!
I just missed it :(

Classifying Tool is more trouble than it's worth. Just go with "good music".

I always call them Prog Metal.

That's even more problematic, I think.

I was banned by Strum, for attempting to be funny in the Pit. Oh well, I've never been banned before, so this is kind of cool.
I tend to avoid the Pit these days. I go in there for the occasional look but that's about it.

Eh, R&M is kind of slow these days, and there's hardly any interesting threads now that they went all nazi with the YSI. I usually stay in the sub-forums of The Pit, but there was just so much stupidity going on I couldn't resist.
It is a little slow, but it'll pick back up in good time.

I got OK Computer the other day. It's good, and I think it'll grow on me more. Is there another Radiohead album I should have gotten first?
Nah, OK Computer is the album you need to get first in my opinion. At first I didn't like it, but I was persistant and determined to find out what everyone thought was so special about them. Then, after about two weeks of listening to it, it hit me straight on and I was hooked.

I'm sure it will, it always seems to anyways.
And Slipt, that's the one I started with, but there's no real right answer to the question. I went OKC => Kid A => The Bends => Hail to the Thief.

Oh man, I just watched Opeth's Lamentations dvd, and Tool's OK show back to back. It was orgasmic. :D
Highlights of the OK show: 4:30 into The Grudge when its just Danny Carey for a few seconds, and when he hits the drums bright white lights come on behind him. And the big balls of balloons that are floating during Parabola.

So last Saturday my Toolophile friend simply handed me his copy of eMotive. He claimed he hasn't listened to any CDs in ages and that he's just going to buy an MP3 player soon anyways.
Anyways, who actually likes this album? I've heard tons of criticism about it, but I think there's some really strong tracks.
I think the album is complete crap. It got one star on Sputnik, but it should have gotten zero.

I love Brandon Boyd's voice. It think what you guys dislike is the vocal harmonies. He's a really **** good singer, better than Maynard in my opinion, just not as cool sounding.
ATTN: I now have the coolest name for my band!!! Lucid Dreams.
No, I just don't like his voice or lyrics. He is incredibly whiny and has a very limited range. When he tries to reach higher notes, he's off key and sounds like a girl.

Think about the movie "elvis lives" Dennis hopper starred in it correct? Which was a crappy film promotion for elvis's #1 Hits, Which also intern ended up being a Chart topper, and bringing elvis back.
He was dead but dennis hopper brought him back. Need proof?

How would I go about burning the show to a dvd or vcd? (I think we've had this conversation before, actually)
You need a program that supports VCDs to be able to burn them that way. The one I used to make my copy came with the burner I had at the time, so I don't know what you would download to use if the program you have now doesn't support it, but I'm sure there's tons of stuff on download.com that will do it. And as far as the DVD burning goes, it shouldn't be complicated at all as long you actually have a DVD burner.
And I tried to upload part 1 last night and it didn't work, so I'll try again tonight.
And in other news I missed out on getting my Opeth tickets, they sold out. So yeah, I'm going to start that upload and go cry for now.

It's more accessable than Lateralus, but some songs might take a while to "get", notabley Pushit and Third Eye. If it helps, skip the filler tracks so you listen to the best parts of the album; the actual songs.
If you like Stinkfist, which was the first "single" (The most accessable song on there), I see no reason why you shouldn't like stuff like Eulogy, 46&2 or Ænima after a few listens. H. is a brilliant song too, it's all in the slow melodic buildup and climax.
Argueably this contains Tool's best songs, though perhaps isn't the best cohesive effort due to all the filler. I skip tracks on Ænima, and don't on Lateralus, but I think the individual songwriting on Ænima is generally better.

H is lyrically a very powerful song. I think that as one of the less musical pieces on this album we are forced to hear what ole maynard is saying.
To me it is about the complete acceptance of the potential threats involved in trusting someone, again:
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die.
It's all right.
I don't mind.
Once you accept the worst possible outcome, there is no longer fear.

I've seen H. played amazingly well on a live video, it's a great song. Turn it up, the bassline and everything is really cool, and just how it builds up and explodes, lyrics or not. I couldn't call it mediocre, it's quite original sounding and I very much enjoy it.
jimmy is one of my least favourite songs on Ænima, but to each their own.

I think like many people here, my favorite tool album rotates between Aenima and Laturalis. One thing that really attracts me to Aenima is the two different styles in the songs. You can easily tell which songs justin wrote and wich ones Paul wrote. I love that about the album, the diversity gets me all they time.

Yeah.. they didn't write the songs, they just wrote their parts, I imagine.
To be honest, I didn't think it was THAT easy to tell. I seem to remember thinking that either Paul had wrote a more complex sounding one, or Justin had wrote a Paul sounding line when I read who had done what ages ago. Though Justin's ones in general were more complex and melodic.

Newish Tool News:
A few different anonymous tipsters report that Tool has been confirmed to play next year's Big Day Out festival in Australia, a festival which hits several major cities Down Under. More on this to follow.
Here's a tasty morsel: the guys over at the official Suns of the Tundra site (the band formerly known as Peach, Justin's old band) mentioned something about a live Tool release:
"much excitement with the new Tool live album just round the corner, while the boys are finally laying some tracks for the sequel to 'Lateralus' now ..."
According to an article over at ultimate-guitar.com, Maynard will be making an appearance on the soundtrack for Saw II:
The SAW II Soundtrack is [...] distinguished by several exclusive tracks, including [...] Lohner's REV 4:20 Mix of "REV 22:20" by Puscifer (the duo of Maynard James Keenan - of Tool and A Perfect Circle - and Lohner himself) [...].
The soundtrack is slated for an October 25th release date, according to IGN.

My acoustic playing is a combination of Steve Wilson and Mikael Akerfeldt. Granted, my playing is quite a bit toned down a bit as far as complex chord changes, but a lot of my acoustic riffs and such sound like a combination of those two guys. Wilson uses a lot of full powerchords, which I take from him, and Akerfeldt does a lot of interesting arpeggios, which I jack from him. But like I said, they're quite a bit simpler than the majority of Opeth stuff.

Actually, if this makes any sense, Adam kinda deinfluenced me. When I was heavily into Tool a while back, I remember kinda being turned off of the guitar and I started taking an interest in drums and bass. There was like a 2 month period where I hardly played guitar (still everyday, but not as much, just a quick noodle and I was done) and all I listened to was pretty much Tool. I knew this wasn't good, so I started searching for new music and found bands like Nevermore and Opeth. :D It was still good though, because now I appreciate other instruments...

My more rockish songs are kind of influenced by Adam in that playing Eulogy for the first song gave me some cool ideas for the Dorian scale.

Mikeal uses a lot of cool chords, and his clean arpeggios are similar to the way I play. Or, maybe the other way around. As for Wilson, I just get a general inspiration from his playing and the song Deadwing really made impression on me guitar-wise. Mark Engles is still my biggest influence, though. I'd say my style is kind of like the darkness of Akerfeldt, the soaringness of Wilson, and the melodic/rhymthmic style of Engles. Heh. It's growing more original with every song I write, though.

I tried to evacuate. Yesterday my family and I spent the whole day fighting traffic to get out of town. After 18 hours, we turned back and headed home, arriving in a little under 2 hours. It was chaos...the most amazing and terrifying thing I've ever seen. Anarchy. Sirens flaring constantly...cars wrecked and abandoned on the side of the road. People driving in the wrong lane...it was just unreal.
But the hurricane made a major jog to the east, and all we're going to get, it seems, are just some very very strong rains and winds.

in the last few weeks i played (i tried to play) some songs from tool, but i am not a fan of dropped-d, so i stopped.
my biggest influences in guitar playing is definetly Alexi Laiho (CoB, not Sinergy): i love his solos and melodic parts soo much. I try to write riffs like Slayer and old Metallica; Right now i'm into In Flames and i want to check out some Opeth songs in the near future.
yesterday i saw some guitar vids on my computer and realized how simple my guitar playing is... i only use the bar-chords (?) and move it on the neck... i barely use 'exotic' chords... thats what i wanna change... my own playing is getting boring and annoying to me...

I'm sort of with you. Tool didn't really make me become less interested in guitar, it's just that it's weird that Tool is one of my favorite bands, yet Adam's playing style hardly has an influence on me. Me and my friend have been writing songs and occasionally I'll come up with a part that reminds me of Tool, but in terms of my overall playing, it's hardly Tool-like. In fact, I'm not even sure who I sound like. It's just me and him (he's a drummer), we're an instrumental band. I think we're going to record songs with his computer some time next month. We'll probably myspace some of our songs, and I'll tell you guys if we do, because I'd like to hear what everyone thinks of our bass-less, singer-less songs. hah. Making music is good times.

I noticed that about Deadwing, Steven's playing really impressed me. I used to think he was just average on guitar, but he really shines on DW. Still, I think Gavin Harrison's playing on DW is absolutely amazing, to me, he and Steven really carry the album.
The biggest influences on me right now (I'm a bassist) is really Brian Marshall (Creed/Alter Bridge), Timmy C, and Dirk Lance. Their style, especially Brian's, I really emulate. I kinda started off learning Creed songs, so when I play, my fills are kinda like his. Justin does have an influence on me, but the problem is that I'm in a band with 6 members (2 guitarists, me, lead singer, drummer and a keyboard), so the need for me to take center stage and carry the band, much like Justin does isn't there. I'm there to be showboaty, I'm just there to hold the song together.
I guess if I was in a band like Tool, I would be more out there and powerful and my bass lines would be really prominent (even though we have a few songs where I am strong). When I form my own band, which will probably sound like PT and Tool, I will probably play more prominent

Well it's not that I think it's a terrible song, I just think that all the other songs on Lateralus are miles above it. Songs like The Grudge, Parabola, Ticks and Leeches, and Triad just kill Lateralus.

It's amazing how much he sounds like Maynard, though.
the song aside form the lyrics sounded very tool-esque, in my opinion. Except for the blatantly rediculous lyrics, it sounded good.

C'mon guys. It's a single, so of course it's not going to be extremely proggy. 81st Chakra is a wicked name, either way. :p

How hard did you get hit by bitchface Rita?
:p Not hard at all. Some winds, a little rain. Heh. Actually, the wind was pretty strong. But we've been without power for the past 18 or so hours, which was something of a chore.

It's actually a pretty good song. The drumming is a little simple for Carey, but the riffage sounds a lot like Jones. (Especially when he F's up lololol) Also, the bass tone sucks. :(
Wait, wait. This is serious?
EDIT: I'm going to say no, after hearing it.

I have. Its the shizznit.
By the way, I've fallen in love with The Dillinger Escape Plan. I can't decide what cd to get by them. Help!(for some reason, I think I'll get suggestions for Irony is a Dead Scene the most).

Well, yeah, Irony Is A Dead Scene is my favorite by them, but having Mike Patton puts it at an unfair advantage. Not counting that, I'd say definetly get Miss Machine, that is a grrrrrrrrrrrrreat cd.

I don't understand the hype about DEP. Anyone care to educate me?
Dude3
09-24-2005, 11:54 PM
I used to think they were crap, but after some more listens I became addicted. Namely, "Baby's First Coffin".
I seriuosly need to check out Patton's work with them though. I love DEP's singer already, and I'm anxious to hear how much Patton can possibly. be better.
I think their current singer's screams are so.....emotional?? Meh, idk. They just seem great when you want to yell for the hell of it. Ex. That built-up scream in Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants. So pain relieving.

For me, it's the manifestation of finding beauty in chaos... The more you listen to their songs, the more you get!.. I mean, Sugar coated sour, is, after you dig through the layers of pure chaos, just a kickass song!
Knifeboy
09-25-2005, 12:05 PM
Exactly!.. Hehe, the first 3-4 times I listened to calculating infinity, it was more because of the novelty value of the album.. Then after the fourth listen, I actually started bobbing my head to 43%.. And the song actually managed to get stuck in my head!.. I would never have thought that it was actually gonna end up being catchy music!

The first time I heard them I loved it. It was just the best timing. Headbangers Ball actually introduced me to DEP and after Panasonic Youth was over I was like, "that was ****ing awesome!!" It was also kind of wierd because I never liked those kinds of vocals but musically it just had me with my jaw to the floor so I really didn't care.
The next time I found my self in love with DEP was listening to When Good Dogs Do Bad Things for the first time and I was just captivated by the ambience in the middle section after all the chaos going on in the beginning.

I honestly don't hear much of a resemblance between Coldplay and Radiohead. Then again, I'm not exactly a big Radiohead fan either, so I don't have a lot of songs to judge from. Anyone want to make some direct song to song comparisons for me?
Last time I checked, this was a Tool thread, not Radiohead or Coldplay.
I don't see the Radiohead/Coldplay connection either. Coldplay is a lot more straight-forward than Radiohead is, for one, and they don't sound all that alike. To the untrained ear, I could see one mistaking Muse for Radiohead, though.

Uh, yeah, yuk yuk, last time I checked, GET THE **** OUT IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!
