Well, I started jamming with my friend again. He's a guitarist. We are planning on starting a band, but now I'm a little iffy.
His guitar playing is ok and all, but he just can't write good guitar parts. I mean, they're really bad! He's writing lyrics too(which I may start too), and while they're ok, they're just kinda crappy in content. Its kinda like Slayer gone wrong. Yeah.....
And he's planning on singing, I can already foresee that he won't be able to sing and play guitar at the same time, let alone actually be a good singer. I wouldn't mind singing, if my voice was ok. Actually, it may work out if I sung. And wrote lyrics. And wrote all the guitar parts. And kick him out of the band.....
Anyways, I think I have a plan. I'm just going to write stuff without him, and make him learn it(just for now), keeping in mind that he can play it. I think somehow I'll take over vocal duties too.
Oh yeah, I played the intro to Tool's Lateralus for about 20 minutes straight today in guitar class. And I went to the pool, and hung out with this really hot chick. With her top off .

I have heard just a few of tool's songs and I can already tell that they just seem like cool guys that are in it just for making good music, not for money or fame as a top priority. I still don't know too much about tool as i just started listening to them, but i do need to get more into them. They are very deep and thought provoking and just has an awesome vibe to them. Great for cranking it in the car :thumb: By the way, i hope this isnt spam.

Anyone out there listen to Deftones. While recording White Pony Maynard watched and gave advice here and there. Chino was having trouble recording the song Passenger and Maynard decided to give an example. Chino thought Maynard hit the song dead on and decided that it'd sound better if they both sung it and even let Maynard right his own chorus and all. The song is awesome if some of you haven't heard it already.

Passenger is my favorite Deftones song. Maynard's vocals in that song are so powerful. I love what Tool's members (or even the band as a whole) can do to other bands' songs.
For example - I've rediscovered my love for the No Quarter cover. Such a great song.

Hey. The Tool Theory is very interesting. I found out that the Lateralus album was inspired by another theory to do with planet X. If u havent heard about this go and find it out. Crazy ****. Also with the whole using your brain thing, there is a special code playlist in lateralus that if u play the tracks in a different order correctly it like opens your eyes to sum other message. Havent tried it yet but I am dying to although it does freak me out a bit. Dunno why just that feeln you get with listening to tool, you know? Maynards lyrics are the most thought provoking i've come across and i won't even try explaining his songs. Am not sure if they are fully meant to be explained but good luck trying. There is a site sumwhere about tool theorys i cant remember what it is but if u type planet x and tool you'll get there. Lets hope for a continuation of this good thread.
Sorry if this wasnt what you were lookin for.opens a new message to your weyes dude wtf that makes no sense and tis not possible seriously go to get a reality check

You know what? You're probably right.
Honestly though, I'm not trying to sound like an a-hole, but I do have tiny bit more talent than him. His songwriting skill just totally lacks in my opinion. For him, his song structures are all the same: Intro-verse-chorus-verse or solo-outro. He listens to good music, so you's think his riffs and all would be great, but he's just kinda lost. He's been playing for about 2 years, so he should know what he's doing. And while his style is WAY different than mine, his playing is just terrible for even his own style.
I'll write some songs, and see what he thinks. Either he'll love it(I'm a good guitar player[I feel like an a-hole again when I say that], he thinks I'm amazing), or he'll just completely disregard it because its too hard or technical.

Hehe, I don't doubt that you're a good player, it wasn't a stab at you.. It just reminds me of myself a few years back, me and another guitarist thought the exact same thing about each other when we played together.. And hey! Now we're in a band, and both respect each other immensively.. (he's the sickest down picker I've ever seen.. He plays blackened at about 40 bpm faster than the actual song? All down picked, ouch.. And the fact that I can alt. pick, impresses him.. Hehe..)
Dude3
09-16-2005, 05:18 PM
Nah man, no offence taken! I thought you were pretty much right in a way. That reminds me, Blackened is a a friken awesome song. I haven't listened to the Justice album in ages, and its my favorite.
For the most part, I'm just complaining that he couldn't write an "ok" song if his life depended on it. And while I know that I can take over vocal, lyrics, and guitar writing completely, I'm pretty sure he won't want me to do it. And the second I write something good, it will be me playing the whole song, because he wont be able to play it. He better get practicing.
This also really blows, because I <3(heh, why not?) guitar harmonies.

Aren't you like 14 year olds or something? (I'm sorry if I'm way off on this, haha, it's never good to get someones age wrong).. If you are, you got plenty of time to work with him.. Give the guy 6 months to improve or something.. Write some not too tricky, but still harder than he can play, lines.. And try to make him improve!.. Yep, I'm 14. I'll try working with him. Hopefully he'll improve, as well as me. If not, we can always still jam. I should meet the right musicians down the road. Actually, I do have a person in mind. His name is Lucky, and he's pretty much the best guitarist I've met. He sucks at solos for the most part, but his riffage is just..... :amaze:
I really need to start a band with him. He has his own recording studio(somehow, he got $10,000 worth of equipment for free), and he has connections.....with James Murphy(omgz, I no, right?!!). He already has his own band, but we're planning on doing a lot of covers of Death and this band called Foreign Objects(I did a write up, I'll find it). That should be fun.
Faith, where in Florida do you live? I forgot.

Who cares if we don't play the kind of music I write when I'm alone, when I'm having a great time eh? hehe

Don't you hate it when you write a riff, and then you notice its already a song?
I just wrote the first electric riff for Opeth's "The Funeral Portrait". I've also done this for the main riff in "Sunshine of your Love". I should be rich.
Yeah so, if that whole "release date" thing was real, the new Tool cd would have been in stores next Monday. I just thought I'd say that.

This is pretty unrelated, but since some Tool fans are also Arcturus fans, here goes: I'm learning Nightmare Heaven from The Sham Mirrors. Fun to play. :-D
Too bad the fag tab I got for it doesn't even have the solo.
I once went on an Arcturus binge, but their songs aren't all that satisfying to play on guitar, from my experience, since there's so much going on around the guitars that makes the song what it is.

Meh, I'll leave the other vid on now. I'm addicted to that song at the moment. Tool will have to wait.
I just though I'd bring this up:
I live in Brandon, Florida(near Tampa), and we have some weird weather warning out right now. Its "...AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM EDT SUNDAY... AN AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY MEANS THAT CONDITIONS EXIST TO TRAP POLLUTION NEAR THE GROUND. THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION COMMISSION OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY HAS MEASURED AN INCREASE IN PARTICULATE LEVELS. RESIDENTS WITH HEART OR LUNG DISEASE... OLDER ADULTS AND CHILDREN SHOULD REDUCE PROLONGED OR HEAVY EXERTION TODAY. "
I just went outside, and its a lot harder to breathe. Almost as if it were intensely humid outside. And it smells! Also, my throat feels a little tightened, and my eyes were getting a little irritated. The world is coming to an end!
.....I wonder if I might get school off tomorrow?

Just read the FAQ about them, it will svae your time. The thing about tool songs is, everyones usually wrong about thier interpretations of the songs. They are really smart dudes and you would probably have to study a lot of different occult type books to truely understand everything they are talking about. I try to find out what the song is about form the band, cuz its their song and I want to know what they are actually righting about. Most of the songs aren't even that hard at all to figure out, u really just have to know what they are about and a lot of their history. their new cd is going to rule. Also, i am getting the eyeflame tattoo'ed on my inner arm. Tool rules!

Also, Maynard has said that he never tells anyone what the songs are about because he wants his fans to form their own interpretations, therefore, there is really no known right or wrong answer. :)

I think the whole thing with the Fibonacci sequence goes a bit further. "Lateralus" seems to follow the Golden Ratio also. I took the bar that the first chorus starts on, and multiplied it by 1.61803399 (Phi) and I got the bar number that starts the part after the second chorus. I seriously doubt that that was unintentional. Also, it has been noted that a lot of music features the climax of a song at 61.8% (Golden Section) into it, especially a lot of classical music. 61.8% into Lateralus (the album) is in "Lateralus" (the song), during the soft breakdown part, at the point where Maynard starts singing about "bathing in the fountains", etc. Just something I noticed today. Anyone else ever read about Phi, the Golden Ratio, Fibonacci sequence, and other stuff like that? I find it absolutely fascinating how so much in this life follows the ratio and is related to the same types of patterns. It's so strange to think about it.

I usually just know bits and pieces of songs. I think I know atleast one guitar riff to most of the stuff on Aenema and Lateralus. I have trouble remembering some of the solos and the timing to them, such as in Lateralus. I can play through Lateralus, but the solos may not be note for note, but pretty **** close. I can play through The Patient and Parabol/Parabola also. Ticks and Leeches, I just don't like playing the bridge so I'll never really know if I can play through it all. The Grudge's timing at times, throws me off. I don't know all the parts to Schism yet. Disposition/Reflection/Triad, I never learned.

I'm a Tool fan and I dont think that myself and my fellow Tool fans are better than everyone else because listen to and understand Tool. Were not potheads, we don't think that because we listen to too, it makes us smarter, get a LIFE. You're opinions are meaningless and so is this e-mail, but I'm bored okay?
By the way, learn to spell Tool songs right, Forty Six & 2 not 46 and 2, retard, all your opinions are meaningless, nobody cares about what you write, and I think many would agree with me, which means, you're outnumbered. Good job loser.
The reason they make most of their music pointless is, A) They are stoned when they write their music, B) In order to enjoy their style of music, which you don't, you have to put pointless **** into their music, its very philosophical.
Get your research done correctly by asking people what they think of Tool, not by BLOWING YOUR ****TY OPINIONS OUT OF YOUR ***.

I'm actually attempting to start lucid dreaming next week.
The trick discussed in the thread over at Politics was to make a habit of drawing a black dot on your palm and periodically look at it. Eventually, that habit will carry over into your dreams and when you don't see it, you'll realize you're dreaming.
I figure if nothing else, it'll give me a nice mental theater to rehearse my *ahem* social skills.

Partially lucid. Most people have plenty of those. I just had my first lucid dream in recent recollection, and I basically had complete control. Changing the environment, making my own actions, etc..

Alex- Glad to see you're starting to like them. You should try to download all of Lateralus.
Opiate - aggressive rock bordering on metal
Undertow - dark, haunting rock with poor recording quality
Aenima - ambient hard rock/ prog
Lateralus - hard prog rock all the way
This is my non-biased take on all of their albums. Now with that said, Aenima is my favorite because I feel that the longer/ambient tracks are more enjoyable than the longer/ambient tracks on Lateralus. Push!t and THird Eye are better than, say, Reflection and Lateralus IMO.
Partially lucid. Most people have plenty of those. I just had my first lucid dream in recent recollection, and I basically had complete control. Changing the environment, making my own actions, etc..
Was it just completely awesome? Or not really any big deal? I seem to suck at this kind of stuff..I've been trying to lucid dream for a couple weeks with no results. One time, I was dreaming, and I kept looking at the clock and the time would be substantially different each time I looked at it. And I said to myself, "hey, I"m dreaming, I'm dreaming, I'm dreaming" at which point I felt myself begin to wake up, followed by a weird sensation of spiraling downward into a portal (think Alice in Wonderland or something), and then I woke up on the floor screaming. The screaming could've been in the dream, but it felt like I actually screamed.
Dr. Jake Destructo
09-20-2005, 06:07 PM
I almost cried in mine. Here's what I remember
I killed a guy 13 times, because my parents told me to do so, or so I thought. After I killed him, I went back to my parents, and they told me I was only supposed to give him nitrous(laughing gas), which incidentally was the last way I killed him. Then, I told myself to wake up, and I did, but I still had that lingering feeling of "oh crap, I killed a guy!" Then I woke up again. I was having a lucid dream within a dream, I guess.
Haha, that's some dream. I know exactly what you mean by that "lingering feeling." I usually have that right after I wake up from a dream. It can work in the other direction, too, like "awesome, I can't wait to see my really hot and cool girlfriend."
And then...not.
Dr. Jake Destructo
09-20-2005, 06:14 PM
 I'd rather have a bad lingering feeling, because the realization that your dream wasn't real once you awake is really quite the kick to the nuts. :-/
I had a dream I found a bunch of gold once. How greedy am I? :p
Hahaha. I've had the dream a couple times where I kill someone as well. Then I wake up, and I know that I'll be going to jail in a few hours and have to face my family.
I really want to lucid dream, though, damn it!
Steerpike
09-20-2005, 06:19 PM
I can only remember my dreams occassionally. And I'll tell you, it's pretty ****ed up.
The most recent one was last spring. I was getting all psyched because I had just seen the trailer for Land of the Dead, and that night I had a dream that I was on the set for a Romero zombie movie. It was in a hospital waiting room, then the zombies broke in and turned out to be real zombies instead of actors.
When I found that out, I ran like hell and hid in a bathroom stall. The crazy thing is, it worked and the zombies left without noticing me.

Go to bed early, seriously. Twice last week, I went to bed at like 7:30-8 and I had lucid dreams both nights. If you have more time to rest your mind, you have more of an opportunity to be half-awake and thus lucid dream.

Also, talking about it, and reading about it will give you a higher probability of making something happen. Yesterday, I talked and read about a bunch of metaphysical stuff, and poof, I had a lucid dream. :)

I control dreams all the time, I had one where Kuppa was stealing my bike on top of Walmart. But the Mario Bros. Pop'd out of a tube on the top of Walmart (they even made the "bwitahbwitah" sound. So anyway I turned into rambo "looking like a mix between NES and movie" and started bustin caps in Koopa till he handed over my bike.....Than my mom woke me up.
When i was younger i REALLY wanted to go on "bozo the clown show", so i dreamed i was a contestant. A month later....i got on the show in real life :O it was amazing, I even got his autograph
I had one last week, All of a sudden I was in this musky hotel-like room. There was another person in there. I don't know how I knew, but this was a bad person. Next I believe that I shot him, or someone did, but I have no recollection of this act, but it'll make a little more sense in another line or two.
The person is lying dead on the bed, at least I thought he was dead. All of a sudden the body moves. I take a step towards it and it starts to move more. I get freaked THEN it sits up and starts doin' some Evil Dead-ish stuff & that's when I can't take it anymore.
I start to run out of the room. On my way out, I see an end table with a GUN & a pack of cigarettes on it. I remember thinking, "I should really grab that gun." But I kept on running out of the room & down the long hall.
Now remember, I'm still dreaming at this point.
I get half-way down the hall when I hear the commotion coming out of the room I just left in my wake.
I was so effen scared that I remember thinking very clearly, "THIS IS SO ****IN' SCARY THAT IT CANNOT BE REAL!!!!!"
Instantly, I'm lucid dreaming. The commotion is gone, the demon is gone, my fear of anything is gone...all in a flash.
I continue to run down the hall though, cuz it seemed fun. I reach the end of the hall & come to a stairway. I believe that I was on the fourth floor. I looked at the steps & decided to JUMP all the way down the middle of the stairs. I land like a cat. I open the exit door and run down the street. All this time, all I really can see is down at my feet. For some reason I really can't look up. So I make it two, three blocks & wake up.

I'd really like to try these things, but the weekends would have to be the only time.
Txus, that sounds like a lot of fun...I want to lucid dream really badly. The possibilites seem endless.

It's really amazing, like you can see by my usertitle i'm still a n00b at this but it's really great scary sometimes but it's a new experience everytime.
I think the first time I was entering lucidity, I got too excted/scared and woke up before I was fully lucid. I remember just being very afraid as I felt that spiraling feeling (as stated in one of my previous posts) and my body just knocked awake.

Kage, you're totally going to have a lucid dream tonight. I mean, all of this talk, you're bound to have one something, y'know? :)
Wow, talk about a thread tangent. I guess this is at least partially Tool related, as Tool delve into metaphysics in a number of their songs. :p

I meditated for the first time in a while before I went to bed last night. I might make it a ritual to work out, meditate, and then go to sleep and try to lucid dream or project.
I've lucid dream't but I can't remember what it was like. It was somthing like Txus's though.

I wasn't talking about the death aspect necessarily because I don't remember it, just the controlling/realization part. I was jumping around and stuff.
The lingering feelings are wierd though. I mean it's like you're actually affected by it and just sometimes makes you feel horrible.

I've read some of Lovecraft's stuff. He's definitely very eccentric. I love the creatures he comes up with.

I'm thinking more of his Dream Cycle. Stories like "The White Ship," "Beyond the Wall of Sleep," and "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath."
And in bringing up Robert Jordan, I'm thinking of the Wheel of Time series.
In both cases, there's a dream world.
It was The Wheel of Time in particular which rekindled my interest in lucid dreaming. Several of the characters in the book are capable of entering a dream world while they sleep which perfectly mirrors the real world, but allows you to reshape yourself and reality (to an extent) around you.
Lovecraft and I share a fascination with dream worlds. King is my preferred author, though, even though I realize the two are quite different, King is obviously influenced by Lovecraft in more than one way.
I haven't read as much Lovecraft as I should, so I'll look into the stories you're talking about.

There's nothing better than reading mind-bending fiction... I've found that it has expanded, in my mind, the possibilities of reality. As ironic as that sounds, it does help you respect unexplained energies that do not exist in the laws of nature. It probably shouldn't have that type of effect on me due to the lack of scientific base of it, but it works nonetheless, I feel.

No most of my lucid dreams involve relationships, or just doing ordianry things like cycling and stuff. I think they normally happen because i spend hours thinking just before i go to bed about all the stuff that eneds thinking about, and it kinda just merges into the dream. It's quite annoying when the dream feels so realistic though, they difinateley affect me IRL.

Hmm, they are a hard rock/prog metal band. They could be compared to bands like chevelle, who play less technical/spacey versions of the tool sound. But they can also be compared to bands like Dredg who create great atmosphere in their music.
I'd reccomend Aenima as a starter album and most of this thread will agree.
But it is difficult to say what tool soud like because there are really no other bands like them.

I've lucid dreamed before on a few occasions, but I have a terrible sleeping pattern anyway, and suffer from mild insomnia sometimes. Being half awake and half asleep is sometimes pretty easy for me. Especially on a morning when I go back to sleep after being woken up too early.
I havn't had an actual lucid dream for a while though.
This dreaming stuff, I'm highly suspecious of people who say they can control it. I know some people have been known to lucid dream every night, but I think it's just how their psychological state is made up, most people simply can't, and some people will never lucid dream. Or should I say, at least remember lucid dreaming.
I gave up on meditation years ago for being too hokey, even though I had a weird experience with it. Although I think that may have been due to lack of oxygen, I think I actually stopped breathing and had a weird little vision thing. I felt like I was floating slightly, but it definately felt due to oxygen loss rather than anything internal or mystical.
My coolest lucid dreams that I can remember are.. being able to turn into different animals, ie: My dog, and then a crow, and flying around. And realising I was dreaming and flying around my neighbourhood and being really strong and stuff.
Edit: To the guy who said he couldn't look up while waking up from his dream, I know the feeling. At first, you're in this dream world that dosn't feel like you've constructed it. And as you're waking up, you start to be able to manipulate yourself within it, and I guess the world itself, though by that point, I feel like I'm imagining the world and creating it in my head anyway, and can feel my body in the real world, etc. and it becomes less vivid. One the control shifts from your unconscious to your conscious you come back to reality. Somewhere in between is just nice, though.

I've seen him say something akin to that, but that's not entirely accurate. Hold on, let me see if I can dig up the quote I have. It was more like, he thought it was lame that people saw them exclusvely as a metal band or something like that, not that he hated being called metal.
EDIT: Here it is...
"When we did Opiate, we picked our heaviest songs. People went, 'Oh, you're a metal band,' and I thought that was kind of lame. We try to branch off into different directions. We try to touch base with all our influences."
Whether that's what someone was referring to or not, it doesn't imply that Jones hates being called metal, only that he thinks the band is more than that.
