So, am I just imagining things, or didn't the August Newsletter feature a story about Axl Rose and a turkey with 2 hearts? I can't seem to find discussion about it on this thread anymore and it seems to not be in the August Newsletter anymore. Was I just imagining things? I feel like I'm in a Philip K. Dick story.

I think that song f*cking rocks.. I would have never pegged Maynard's and Chino's voices to work so well together..

Now on "Revolution" with Tool & RATM, Zak's (that's his name right..?) and Maynard's voice had no chemistry whatsoever.. The bands on the other hand f*cking rocked my socks, man..

Guy was at the concert too.

I was on the right hand side of the stage, so drums were obscured all gig, but I did have a perfect view of the rest of the band. Face Of Melinda was spine tingling, Deliverance owned so hard as an opener (mad strobe lights and smoke effects). Blackwater Park may have caused me permanent neck injuries, and I went into full metal growl 'yuuuuuuuaaaaaaarrrrrreeeeessss!' when they announced Baying Of The Hounds

They played all the songs I wanted (except I also wanted the whole Still Life album), and the crowd was one of the best i've been in, no retarded moshing, just good ol' fashioned energy and headbanging

The songs are long, and there are some useless tracks, but above all they're pretty good. At least their lyrics mean something, and you have to actually listen to the music to get the meaning or whatever. It's not just some useless "I f*cking hate you" bs, but thats my own opinion

I've been listening to Tool for about 7 or 8 years and 'Lateralus' is their best work closely followed by Opiate. The way I see it, Undertow and AEnima are too long and undiscrimintating in song choices to be anything more than just 'very good' albums, certainly not the great records rabid Tool fans argue they are. As good as 'Disgustipated' is to listen to high, it should have been its own EP. I hear a bit of Led Zeppelin in this middle Tool period, but its there sorts of tracks that detract from the coherent artistic statement. Like Zeppelin there's always genre disputes - prog, rock, metal?

Unlike, say, 'Physical Graffiti', 'AEnima' isn't all songs and has a lot of crap; I like bits of 'Third Eye', but at the end of such a long album it needed to be more dynamic to hold my interest, 'Hooker With A *****' is a good track, but sitting between fillers 'Message to Harry Manbeck' and 'Intermission'. 'Die Eier Von Satan', on the other hand, is childish. It's really here in the middle this record starts to dip; it can't sustain the quality of the three killer opening tracks. I could trim this album to around an hour and lost little.

By 'Lateralus' they'd figured out pacing a bit better. There's probably a little more excellent material here than on 'AEnima', but it seems finally each song fits into the context of the album. It's not hard to figure out what they're trying to say here, but they really just play some good apocalyptic rock and roll. There's not really much wrong with it, here's hoping they do something more like 'Opiate' next time.

I just really jotted down a bunch of sentences here in some kind of logical order.

Ænima has Tool's best songs on it, in my opinion. Yes, there's a lot of filler, but thats there for fun, you can skip it. Lateralus is an amazing album too, I like it about as much as Ænima because, as you say, it's more cohesive, but the songs in themselves don't always stick out as much to me as ones on Ænima, as brilliant as they are.

Regardless, both are two of my favourite all time albums.

As for Opiate being one of their best releases... meh. Opiate is an EP, and it's practically nu-metal. Good nu metal, but it's nothing on their later work. (I do enjoy it though) The songs lack the overall quality of their other stuff, and it's so short, so I don't know how you could call it one of their best releases up there with Lateralus. Undertow has some brilliant moments, and I enjoy it too, but again, I feel the quality of songwriting just went up to a whole other level on Ænima, filler or not.

Aenima is definitely their most well-done album in my eyes because it not only has brilliant prog songs, but it progresses as an album too. My favorite songs are Stinkfist, Push!t, Third Eye, and Eulogy...and all are on Aenima, so naturally that would be my favorite album.

Lateralus is a great album, but IMO it's more repetitive; every song on it sounds sludgy except for maybe Schism.

Undertow has a few quality songs, but it has some crap and poor recording quality.

Opiate is basically just a heavy rock/metal album that I listen to to get me pumped. Cold and Ugly and Part of Me are just great heavy/aggressive songs.

Ænima is possibly the best tool album indeed. But the thing you've gotta love about tool is their exploration with albums. Each album focuses on a specific theme and the songs of that album just simply break down those themes making it more explanatory; eg: Opiate- "Question Authority" or Lateralus- "Reconciliation/Thinking outside the lines (Lateral thinking)". Through Tool's music we get a different perspective about life as a whole. Tool is definately one of the best bands to ever exist as it gives science, psycology, philosophy a sound.

The former half of the album with songs like Stinkfist, 46 & 2, and H. are shorter less prog songs but are still good. As you get later into the album (with a few exceptions) the songs get more progressive and the fillers get more interesting. The more progressive songs at the beginning (Eulogy) are not as drawn out and experimental as the later prog songs as Push!t and Third Eye.

Just a small observation. But I think the album flows/progresses better on Aenima than on Lateralus.

Eulogy is extremely drawn out though. I think one of the things I don't like about Aenima is that not all the parts of the songs work. I hate the ending to the song Aenema. Eulogy has a couple weak parts. I don't really like H much, and I really don't like Jimmy. Lateralus has an interesting track order. The Grudge works as an opener (although Parabol/Parabola would be ****ing awesome too). I like where The Patient is too, and I think that flows fine into Mantra into Schism. I hate how Ticks and Leeches is after Parabola. It just doesn't seem to fit there. I'm thinking, Parabol/Parabola to open the album. Then, much later into the album, you put The Grudge followed by Ticks and Leeches to end the album. I can understand your complaint about the repetitiveness of Lateralus. I personally don't mind it all, it's one of my favorite cds of all time, but I know where you're coming from.

Aenima is a great album, but i like more Lateralus. Maybe because its more proggressive, while Aenima still has some characterisitcs Undertow shows; especially the first songs. I like thw way the style of each album has advanced, to a dark feeling to a more progressive way.

Artemician
09-10-2005, 01:36 PM
Yeah, each album does progress a lot. You can really see Tool's 'journey', if you will, through music. My personal favorite is and always has been Lateralus. It's just much brighter than the others and much more complex as well. I love the mathematical feel of it.

Just a small observation. But I think the album flows/progresses better on Aenima than on Lateralus. same here, i think lateralus (album) was monotone, there only great album IMO was Aenima. When i hear lateralus (album) theres not a ton of difference between songs, besides Schism and Lateralus (song).

Does anyone know if Mr. Bungle has an album, or a bootleg, of a High School Talent show thing?

I found one that is labeled Mr Bungle, but I don't know... It's definitely weird enough.

Yeah, Lateralus definitely has that monotone sludge sound and it's too long. Still a very good album; it's just not as brilliant as so many people believe. However, it's not horrible "wanking sludge" as Pitchfork calls it.

Normally variety would be preferable, but for some reason Lateralus' songs just flow so much better for me. Again, the whole mathematical feel is present throughtout the whole album.

A song can never be too long or too short. I prefer a longer version 100x over a shorter version.

Lateralus is repetitive and some songs (can be) a little bit too long, but everything in tool has a meaning!

We rigged up a ski rope to my friend's four wheeler, and he just floored it, I hung on, and then hit his little 2 foot high kicker going 20 miles per hour. The first time, we just set up a 4x8 peice of plywood as a landing,(I was jumping onto grass) and I totally cleared the wood, and faceplanted massive. We then propped the landing up onto a bench, so I wouldn't break my legs every time I landed. Then, we just kept moving the landing further and further back, until it reached 17 feet. I got scared after that, but my goal is to go for 20 next week.

Yeah, that is pretty insane. Kinda reminds me of this kid I used to know.....

His name was Ray, and he was an insane BMXer. He could pull a whole lot of crap. And he was pretty much just as good on all other "extreme sports". He could do the hugest ollies on a skateboard that I've ever seen, but he considered skateboarding a "***** sport". He was quite good on skates as well.

Now on his bike, he was just insane. He could go off that same 1ft high kicker, and clear my whole driveway(I'm guessing that's about 25 feet). He rode off of roofs. He could pull backflips, and almost pulled a superman off of some dirt ramp that was 6ft high, which we built on our neighborhodd sidewalk(funny, because it was there for weeks, and I live in one of those neighborhoods where you get reported for doing pretty much anything).

Oh yeah, he put spinning rims on his bike, along with a flamethrower.

1) What is astral projection, in a nutshell?

2) How did you do that?

Yeah, Tool are about as musically good as listening to jail rape. Gawd.

1) Basically, you get your astral body to leave your phsyical body. Basically the real life "matrix" where your inhibitions are null. You can go anywhere, do anything, etc..

2) See: Meditation 102. Go to the politics subforum in the pit. There are some very good informative posts in there. I'll grab a link, but if you get to it before me, read the first page, and read the links.

What is lucid dreaming? Maybe I should get in on some of this stuff. It sounds interesting, to say the least.

Dr. Jake Destructo

Lucid dreaming is basically a dream where you're in control of the events that happen. Again, read this thread (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331239) for some insight on how to control your dreams. First few pages will have some info on it. Look for "The dot method."

This is wild...you say you've almost astrally projected? How long did it take you to get to that point?

I think I need a stress reliever in my life, maybe this will do the trick.

Dr. Jake Destructo
09-10-2005, 11:42 PM
I've been practicing for about two weeks. Usually for half an hour to forty-five minutes at a time, but when I partially got out, it took about eighty minutes of meditating.

Kage
09-10-2005, 11:45 PM
80 minutes of meditating? I still have no idea how to actually do it, but I'm still early in the thread.

Dr. Jake Destructo
09-10-2005, 11:48 PM
You just lay there, trying to clear your mind, focusing your mind on certain things. I usually float back from concentrating on trying to see with my third eye, trying to make my limbs go numb(mainly by just holding them still for so long), and that extremely high pitched whistle in your head. Just read up on it, let it soak in, and try it.

I want to Astral Project soooooooo bad. I'm just not totally sure how to do it.

Like, what am I suppost to be doing to make it happen? How should I practice? What state of mind do I need to be in?

I have a good idea so far, but I'm still confused. I did get really close one time, listening to the song "Lateralus" while I was falling asleep. I started getting a tingling sensation, which was VERY awkward. Then I started feeling numb from my legs and upwards.

Is there anything that enables communication telepathically? I'd love to try that.

Also, "Sunshine" is still up in SW&L.

Dr. Jake Destructo
09-10-2005, 11:55 PM
Nah, I doubt you would have gotten out while listening to music. When you're having an out of body exprience, you're more relaxed than you are when you're sleeping. This means no stimulant of any kind. :p Complete silence, no distractions are musts.

Kage- Which Deftones album should I get next? I like the cover of Around the Fur. :naughty:

Now that I think of it, I think I did get MUCH closer to projecting about a year ago. I was listening to a lot of Tool, and getting into a whole lot of cool science stuff because of my teacher. I was also really reading up on Lucid dreams and OBE's.

Here's what happened:
I was going to bed(probably very late), and I started having a dream. I guess it was somewhat lucid though, because I knew that I was dreaming. In the dream, there were 3 people sitting in one of those "test" astronaut things(the machine that spins around extremely fast). It started running, and suddenly stopped. The guy in the middle of the 3 flew foward, and hit the front glass of the machine.

I then noticed that I had an extremely intense "tingling" sensation. I didn't really feel one with myself. I freaked out! I tried moving, but I couldn't. I think I was in sleep paralysis(which can follow an OBE). I couldn't even open my eyes. That's how lifeless my body was functioning.

I think I either did, or got really close to projecting that night.

I definately recommend Around the Fur. It's more raw and less experimental than White Pony,b ut songs like Be Quiet and Drive, Lotion, Dai The Flu, My Own Summer, and Mascara are absolutely amazing.

Sounds like I'll have to dedicate some real time to astral projection...I really wish I had gotten into this over the summer when I had nothing but time to waste. I think I'll wet my feet with lucid dreaming, though.

EDIT: On Deftones, Around the Fur is the next album you should get if you want the raw, heavy stuff with some good atmospheric and soft stuff thrown in. S/T next if you want a darker, more atmosphere-driven album.

Thank you User "Txus" and User "Maynard James Keenan" for a warm welcome. Im new to this forum so im not sure about locating posts. It took me like 10 minutes just to find my last one, maybe someone can help me out. And since we're talking about Deftones, my favourite album is Adrenaline. Did you know: Adrenaline is a drug that releases excess seratonin (A hormone in the brain). Seratonin is the main hormone that makes us happy; Adrenaline is used maily as an anti depressant.

H.

I was looking at some guitar tabs for H. from Ænema the other day at mxtabs.net and it stated "Song Title: H. (Heroin.)".

For **** sakes ladies, H. does NOT stand for heroin. "H was originally titled Half Empty as it explores different views on change, but through time me and the guys thought H. was a far more apropriate title" - Maynard James Keenan of Tool.

well, i was off for 2days and so many pages written... i hope i didn't missed anything :thumb:

to the meditation stuff: about 3years ago i meditated a lot. the best thing to start with is when you take about 30mins time before you fall asleep and concentrate on your breath... clear your mind, try to be in harmony with your body and soul/mind and count your breathes 1...2....3...4... [...] ...10. when you reach 10 you start with 1 again.
It isn't that easy!! you always got redirect by another thoughts.... its really hard to concentrate only(!) on counting your breath.
After some weeks you will be good enough to concentrate only on your breath; Afterwards (once again some weeks later) you will be able to clear your mind, without the help of 'concentrating on your breaths' :thumb:

sorry bro, its just that the two posts were about two completely different topics. i will try n avoid it as much as i can though.

do you guys know the tool song "Merbaka"?

aparently its egyptology and more ironically mentioned in a book called "Ægypt". im guessing thats where maynard got the blue prints for Ænema.

anyways, back to merbaka. its a form of early egyption meditation which helps one align his Mind (Mer*), Body(Ba*) & Soul (Ka*).

*(In Egyption).

in some of tool's concerts you can often see maynard sitting on the floor cross legged with both eyes closed while the rest of the band gives birth to a screaming sound.
