Meh, that's the main thing that bother me about Tool, (apart from the fanboys :p), the vocals, I really don't like them. And like I said, all those post-grunge nu metal bands, I'm not sure about their names. Sevendust, Cold, ??? Those things.

IMO, Maynard's voice is one of the best in the Rock/Metal scene of today. He is very clear, has the abillity to go high and low(ish) and also does a great sceam.
He certainly improved from Opiate till now. And I think he could go beyond extremely good on the new album(new album....).

I like neutral vocals, not too whiny, not too high, you know, normal people. I like Harsh vocals as well.

Well, like I said, to me they sound like those bands, with longer tracks. The simple riffs, repetitive structure of the song, 'whiny' vocals, just the overall sound. I don't know if I would call them just Nu-metal, but they do have lots of similarities.

It's not really about the riffs, it's about the whole musical texture. The bass and drums sort out the rhythm to the song, the vocal line provides the melody, and the guitar just reinforces the vocals maybe adding a countermelody once in a while.

Pravada, and Freewill are progressive metal. Tool on the other hand is modern rock.
If fringe progressive metal acts are to be included, Tool would be the most popular group in the genre. Tool exploded to prominence in the mid 90s with the release of their third album, Ænima, and have since gone on to become one of the most popular rock acts in the world. Their eclectic mix of heavy metal, rhythmic drumming, complex structures and deep lyrics has prompted many people to classify them as a progressive metal band although their music differs substantially from traditional progressive acts (see Diversity section, below). However, Tool's next release, 2001's Lateralus solidified the band's standing in the Progressive Metal scene with its complex structure and highly conceptual nature, although some purists contend that Tool is more akin to Industrial music rather than traditional Progressive metal. im more of the "purist". they are not progressive metal at all to me.

Yeah, I guess it is, but since I don't like the vocals much, It's hard for me to get into it, hence leaving long and simple structure with no melody ---> bores me. :) If only I liked the vocals, it would have been way different.

There aren't really that many bands that are similair to Tool, but here are some bands that most Tool fans seem to like:
Porcupine Tree
Dredg
Pink Floyd
Opeth
Cog
Rush
A Perfect Circle(duh)
About categorizing Tool- Based on their overall sound, I'd say they're a prog rock band. I mean, sure, they have their less complex songs, like Stinkfist, and everything from Opiate, but for the most part, each song is a lot more complex when compared to your typical soup of rock bands. Let's take 46&2, for example. Aside from brining up the mathematical aspect of the song, there are tons of riffs involved in the song, and multiple variations of the chorus and verse riffs that resurface throughout the song. There are a lot of Tool songs like this, where they have an intro, chorus, verse, chorus, verse, then a basically entirely different mult- minute song in between, chorus verse, outro. Lateralus is similair to this, Ticks and Leeches is(I'm not even counting the segue in the middle) and a few more. This style of song structure makes for an extremely progressive sound.
Oh, and did I mention Third Eye? The most free-form song ever made? :p

Well, I didn't like it. The album started off pretty good, Stinkfist is an okay song, apart from the vocals, that's something that annoyed me throughout the entire album, the vocals are so bland, whiny even. I don't really know why you call them progressive, especially with maynard's vocals, they sounds like another post-grungy nu-metal band, I'm not saying that to piss you guys off. Well, maybe a little.
But seriously, they do sound like a lot of those bands, I forget all their names, the ones who have videos on Launch, only Tool's songs are longer. All of the songs just go on and on, with the exception of Stinkfist, which is about the right length.
The album wasn't particularly terrible or anything, but the fact that it was so long, I mean 9 minutes or even 13 minutes for a song that barely even shows a lot of change. Sure, there were some moments where I would think 'Hmm, nice riff' or sometimes I would enjoy part of the song. The drums were pretty nice, I guess.
Best songs : Stinkfist and especially Intermission, at least that song had some energy.
That reminds me, what's with all the useless tracks? They only add to the boredom.
Overall, I would give it a 2/5 or so, maybe 1.5/5 for beign so damn long.
RUN!
thats great that you actually listened to the whole album but I really don't care to hear what you thought of it cause it doesn't sound like you know **** about music. I've only heard songs of in Absentia, and they're both clearly prog rock, same style. That's what I hear. Just a bit more energetic.
And Third Eye didn't have much change for the length it had, to pull off a thirteen minute track, you have to surprise me with something new each minute, otherwise it gets hopelessly boring.

Third eye doesn't change that much. It only has a few riffs, though i just love the atmosphere it gives off, and maynards 'so good to see you...' bit is quality. Oh and the solos are great too.
But i can see where 'peer is coming from. He doesn't like the vocals, so tool is pretty much lost. Wouldn't you agree that most songs are driven by Maynard? The rest of the band just give him a building block or complement him.
And come on Saying Kyuss aren't liek tool because it's 'stoner rock' What the **** is stoner rock? Rock played by stoners? Why does that make it different to rock played by non-stoners? I think the way that kyuss is very riff based, without showing much virtuosity on the guitr side of things is comparable to tool. As is the general sludgieness of the music.

Well yeah, but since you were all calling Tool progressive rock, I thought it would have been clearer. I guess, yeah, both are basically modern rock, with progressive elements, but not enough to be called progressive in my opinion. Maynard can say what he likes about how he fits into the band, but for me it's all about complementing his lines. the drums, bass and guitar just back him up and fill in the spaces when he doesn't sing. Its due to the large number of lurkers who love to click pretty buttons and make the only band they've heard win a poll. Then they tell their friends, and they all start signing up.
Thats my theory anyway

Some of the clean mellow sections are the best they've done, but this one is taking some listening compared to the others. It seems like something ill grow to love more, as there are bits I picked out first listen that struck me
The first song completely blew me away. Also, Harlequin forest is an amazing song. I was afraid that the use of full-time keyboards would be overdone and sound waterd-down, but, aside from slight overuse on The Grand Conjuration, it's not overdone at all. It adds some great ambience to it. I also love the theme/concept of the album. It's very haunting. The artwork is brilliant.

Agreed 100%.
His voice is just amazing. I was listening to it with a friend who'd never heard Opeth, and he was just stunned. He's a singer, and he was floored by Mikeal's singing/screaming abilities. BWP is/was my favorite, but this is almost topping it.

RUN!
The songs are long, and there are some useless tracks, but above all they're pretty good. At least their lyrics mean something, and you have to actually listen to the music to get the meaning or whatever. It's not just some useless "I f*cking hate you" bs, but thats my own opinion

i can remember when 2yrs ago my cousin came to me (after i lend him a tool-cd) and said that he likes 'prison sex' so much and its the best song he ever heard.
well, i said nothing, cause he was 13yrs old and still learns english at school. with 13 your english is too bad to understand lyrics. that was funny - now he is 15yrs - hm, i have to ask him if he still likes that song
 that's funny. When i was 13, I understood that. :amaze:

Band Members
Maynard James Keenan-Vocals (1992-Present)
Adam Jones-Guitar (1992-Present)
Justin Chancellor-Bass Guitar (1995-Present)
Paul D'Amour-Bass Guitar (1992-1995)
Danny Carey (1992-Present)
Biography
Widely labled as 'Progressive Rock/Metal', Tool got their start in LA in 1992, with Maynard James Keenan at vocals, Adam Jones at guitar, Paul D'Amour at bass, and Danny Carey at percussion.
Maynard's real names is James Herbert Keenan. He grew up in Ravenna, Ohio, where his parents were both teachers. A dark bit of his past, his abuse at the hands of his stepfather, is prevelant in Tool's material. In high school, he was an outgoing individual, participating in many activities. Upon graduation, Keenan joined West Point Academy, which he attended for three years before moving to Los Angeles. This is also where he adopted the name 'Maynard'. In LA, Maynard was living next door to future bandmate Danny Carey.
Adam Jones grew up in Libertyville, Illinois, where he went to school with none other than Tom Morello, future member of Rage Against the Machine. Adam played the violin in his early years, switching to bass guitar for Tom in the band Electric Sheep. Adam also became interested in film. Instead of going to film school, Adam opted for art school instead. Later, he would work for Stan Winston's studio, creating special effects for films such as Jurassic Park and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Adam would later be introduced to Maynard via Tom Morello.
Danny Carey was raised in Kansas, where he played the snare drum in the school band, before getting his first drum set at age 13. He passed up a basketball scholarship to go to music school (I belive, don't quote me on that). Danny also played the tabla under the guiding of master Aloke Dutta, who would later sit-in with Tool during live performances. Danny then moved to LA,and Adam and Maynard would audition band members, who often blew them off, in which case Danny would sit in.
Paul was raised in Spokane, Washington. He moved to LA in search of a career in film. He was introduced by Adam to the other members of Tool. During the recording of the record 'Ænima,' creative differences with the other members lead to Paul leaving the band.
Enter Justin Chancellor, whose band Peach was the supporting band on Tool's '93 Eurpean Tour. When Paul left, the band asked Justin to join. Peach had just broken up, so Chancellor jumped at the chance.
Never rushing themselves to make others happy, Tool have made the music they have wanted to make for over a decade. In 2000, Maynard joined Tool guitar techniction Billy Howerdel to form the band A Perfect Circle. Through legal troubles and side projects, Tool have never faltered in their quest to make great music.

I've never heard of this rip. You'd think a band wouldn't be careless enough to rip a Tool riff and think to get away with it.
I know this is freaking old, but I might as well enlighten you all, since it went unanswered:
I'm not liking the term "rip" here. It's more of showing a sign of respect for Pink Floyd on Tool's part. The riff is from Part I of Shine on You Crazy Diamond, by Pink Floyd. I will be uploading the similair segments in a few minutes via YSI.
And hey you guy from Toolnavy- You weren't a bad poster when you first joined. Then you started spamming, and such. It'd be nice to have another worth while Tool fan around here, so you wanna clean up your act, and post with a wee bit more brain power? :p

Wow, I never noticed the similarities until now. It's the same few notes. I'd hardly call that a ripoff, it might not have even been intentional. Pretty cool find too. I always found a similarity between The Grudge and Yyz actually. The part where it's just the percussion doing the main ryhthm of the song seems similar to me to the beginning of Yyz. It's definitely on purpose. I mean, what are the chances that Tool, who have cited Pink Floyd as a huge influence, and SYOCD is proclaimed as one of their best songs. It'd be a crazy coincidence.

Just look at the name. I'd go with either:
1) Fake, a la fake albums in the Ænima booklet.
2) A possible unofficial bootleg, but it even almost sounds too bad for that.
