It is needed. Not in the studio, but their live show benefits from these clowns inciting the crowd and stuff.

Showmanship then, so they're basically there to pump the crowd up.

I had a odd thing happen to me the other day; a group of godcore/hXc kids claimed that I had bad musical taste because I listened to Radiohead. I was confused at first, but the irony hit me and I just laughed. Later one of my friends was talking to the same guys, and when he brought up the subject of Tool, they said something like "I hate Tool, they suck and are satanic". That was just even funnier to me.

To add meaning to this post, anyone else have any experiences with people who were just so musically ignorant they make you laugh?

This may just be me being an *** but it bothers me when like twice a day someone comes up to you and goes "Rap or Rock?" as though they are the only two genres any teenage kid would listen to. Argh.

Edit:

Oh, and Hoorah! for the Slipknot representation.

Why?

Bands like Tool or Muse can pump the crowd up just as well with way less than half the members. :p

But for Slipknot? Yeah, for them maybe it IS needed.

The percussionists give the music the primal aggresion that they've always wanted and gotten in there music. If you need an explanation for the DJ, you need to listen closer as he adds so much to the S/T album and Iowa, and there is a ton of sampling to be done. They aren't unnecessary, they serve great purposes.

I really like Slipknot's MFKR album and the new one in a few places, other than that I don't listen to the other stuff anymore.

The live show they put on will probably be the best show you'll see. To give you an idea of how good they are live these are some bands in the same league live-wise:

Dream Theater
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Nevermore
Symphony X
Mastodon
Rob Zombie
Judas Priest

I'll put Slipknot up against any of those bands.

In all fairness, that's not really a question that should bug you. Popular music (Pop) is comprised of Rap and Hip Hop, and the other half of the coin is Rock (A very wide ranging genre). Now, I'm sure there are a few that listen to Jazz and Classical, but how often have you asked someone what they listen to, and they throw out Miles Davis?

That, and the common person couldn't tell you the difference between Doom Metal and Stoner Metal, so more defined genre names would just get you weird looks.

The only tracks I liked were Imagine, Passive, When The Levee Breaks (the only cover where they really did some interesting), and Counting Bodies. Overall, the album felt rushed and unfinished, and that APC took a group of classic songs, and for the most part, took everything away and gave nothing back but awkward industrial beats. Jeordie and James weren't even on the album, Josh's immense talents were wasted, and I don't like Billy's voice.

Meh. Just my opinion.

Bought Aenima. Quite frankly, I'm a little dissapointed in it. I love Lateralus, Aenima just seemed like a "nothing" album. Nothing really stood out and it seemed a little try-hard to me, as in they were trying hard to be wierd.

I'll probably love it after a few more spins. However it's gonna have to pry "Scenes from a Memory" from my hands first.

I like Aenima more than Lateralus aswell.

I think he sings if more emotion on that album. On Lateralus he kinda sounds robotic.

Its not a bad thing, I just like other style better.

Then there is all the rumours about the new singing style. arghhh

same here on my Ænima cd. the scratch is on the end of the cd so when it gets to the part where maynards starts singing "so good to see you" thats when it starts to skip. so i have to yet get another one.
between me and my briother, i think weve been through 2 opiates, 3 undertows, like 6 Aenima's, and 3 Lateralus. We've managed to keep Salival intact somehow.

Dream Theater is a classic example of a band that's trying too hard (at least on the last 3 albums). Tool is beautiful in it's subtlety. I've heard people say before how they though Tool was weird, that though never crossed my mind. I see Tool as art, and the songs are kind of like paintings, especially on Aenima. I always thought Aenima was the most subtle of all Tool records. It's a little dark, but it is still positive. Most of the songs are coming from a perspective of being in a negative space looking for the positive in the situation.

actually for me, its a culmination of everything. I get a lot of inspiration from petrucci. It actually fuels me to stay up a lot and just tackle problems head on, and not giving up.

It seems so effortless for them. They are also not flashy and over the top, as like the Dilinger Escape Plan was, who were terrible

For me it's like the exact opposite, to listen to their CDs I have to listen to the whole thing, especially with Scenes From a Memory.

I wasn't all that impressed by the Live at Budokan DVD. To be honest, I think Dream Theater are ok. I probably just prefer bands with catchier leads and riffs in the place of technicality. They do have some good songs, but overall I've sorta gone off them. The vocals are hit or miss with me as well.

Also with the mention of Dillinger Escape Plan, the sole purpose of their music is to give a chaotic feeling to the listener.

Also that brings up another band, Meshuggah. Have you ever been listening to them and got like a zoning-out kind of feeling? I read in an interview, that was the sole purpose of their music.

it just seemed really lame to me.

Also, the guitarist apparently had a problem with his sound, feed, or something during the show, and chucks his guitar, which is kinda kewl, but childish. Then when the tech came out to grab the guitar and give him a new one, the guitarist shoved him outta the way.

I have such a love/hate relationship with Power-Metal in general though. Well, a lot of metal, I suppose. I can't stand the cheesy traditional metal vocal style most of the time, ie: Iron Maiden, and that goes especially for Power-Metal style vocals. It sounds so out-dated to my ears, I just 95% of the time can't get into it.

But on the other hand, I absolutely adore the guitar-work. It's weird though, because if the style changes slightly I can enjoy over-the-top vocals. Like, I dunno, Avenged Sevenfold, or Muse.

I'm really into DT's Train of Thought right now. The first five tracks are amazing, but then Stream of Consciousness comes on. I really dislike that song, it's a tiresome ten minutes of technical playing with no soul or emotion. Then In the Name of God comes on, which is pretty good.

I'm more of a fan of their heavier stuff, ToT, Awake, "The Glass Prison", I'd rather listen to that then their softer stuff which I honestly find to be a bit cheesy at times.

They're all amazing musicians, true virtuosos who can make some fantastic music. James Labrie can occasionally get on my nerves, but he deserves some credit.

Oh and check out the new modern rock band poll. Hardest choice ever, I think, I'm still undecided between the first four artists.

No, I don't care if it's nerdy. Most people just blatantly misuse the word because they don't know its actual German meaning. It started with people saying, for example, "(insert something here) uber all" which is fine, but then they started saying, "(instert something here) is uber cool," which is not fine. It translates to "(instert something here) is over cool."

It just really irks me for some reason, and it's a pet peeve. It's an ignorance that caught on and people hopped on the bandwagon, and that really angers me.

Leave us like this if you like.

I just don't like having to look at every 'rock and metal's' thread to find this one. If they all just said 'Band Name' it would be easier, but then i suppose new users would just make threads, but then again they did with the official threads.

Yeah, I know it doesn't look good, but either all the threads have that name or none, you can't just do it for some and not for others, it destroys the purpose of it all.

See I think uber has done some good things for us.

When you translate uber to over you are missing the fact that languages have different ways of using words that translate the same. Eg. the danish word for over is often used (in slang) in the same way that uber is used in the proposed thread title: "The Uber Tool Thread".

So, let go of your annoyance, as (at least in some countries) it does make sense to use uber in sentences such as "it was uber cool"

ps. this post contains a carefully planned, well-hidden Tool-reference

Saying something is uber cool, is actually sort of proper usage (the mixing of two languages aside).. "Das ist uber toll!" <- German phrase.. "That's overly great".. Just because it doesn't make sense directly translated doesn't mean it doesn't make sense at all.

Kage
08-29-2005, 10:17 PM
I've never heard it used by any German people, but whatever. And I know that just because something doesn't directly translate doesn't mean it doesn't work. The point is that it bugs me because most people using it don't know what they're actually saying. Several people I've talked to thought it meant "super," which is really annoying. And, aside from that, like you said, the mixing of the two languages is lame.

You're forgetting the fact that virtually every language is a ripoff of a previous language. This is like saying that mixing genres is lame. Learning another language would be a lot harder to master if it weren't for the mixed concepts, like conjugated verbs, similiar uses of definite and indefinite articles, and etcetera.

i never heard uber using in germany or austria too. the only word people are using in vienna (its a sort of dialect/slang - and only (!) in vienna) they say 'UR'-something.
f.e.: Ur-cool, UR-geil, Ur-leiwand, Ur-lässsig, du bist Ur-lieb, etc.
geil, leiwand, lässig you can translate to 'cool' or something like that.

Actually, that's not how I mix in english words.. I usually end up using 6 syllable words from the english language because I don't know them in danish :upset:.. My thoughts are in half-english/half-danish, wich makes it harder to use both languages properly.. I blame the internet

Well, I didn't like it. The album started off pretty good, Stinkfist is an okay song, apart from the vocals, that's something that annoyed me throughout the entire album, the vocals are so bland, whiny even. I don't really know why you call them progressive, especially with maynard's vocals, they sounds like another post-grungy nu-metal band, I'm not saying that to piss you guys off. Well, maybe a little.

But seriously, they do sound like a lot of those bands, I forget all their names, the ones who have videos on Launch, only Tool's songs are longer. All of the songs just go on and on, with the exception of Stinkfist, which is about the right length.

The album wasn't particularly terrible or anything, but the fact that it was so long, I mean 9 minutes or even 13 minutes for a song that barely even shows a lot of change. Sure, there were some moments where I would think 'Hmm, nice riff' or sometimes I would enjoy part of the song. The drums were pretty nice, I guess.

Best songs : Stinkfist and especially Intermission, at least that song had some energy.

That reminds me, what's with all the useless tracks? They only add to the boredom.

Overall, I would give it a 2/5 or so, maybe 1.5/5 for beign so damn long.

RUN!
