Sup thread I'm back.

I got AABC in my As levels..w00t...(that means i will be predicted straight A's for my uni application...:p)

American radio plays alot of tool...which i found kinda strange as the heaviest thing on english radio is the libertines and the likes :( They also seem to have an obsession with slipknot and Alice In Chains, it is impossible to flick the radio on for more that half an hour without hearing them. Well I make it sound like all radio is like this but i was only listening to the first rock station i found. Meh.

I can't be bothered in catching up with all the topics mentioned in the thread since i left, mainly because Ben has already informed me there has been no news.

GG Jake on overtaking my postcount while i was on hols :(

I will say that Schism is clearly about Christianity, although the song shows no objectivity to it whatsoever.

I would not say clearly. Obviously, we can have our own views of lyrics, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. However, to me, the lyrics on the surface are possibly about The Great Schism, but I believe it to be an analogy (am I using the right word there?) for a failed relationship. That way, you could look at it with either view and you'd think you're correct. However, why would there be a song on the album about Christianity? I guess this also depends on your views of the other songs too. You could say they are very spiritual lyrics on the album, or you could have a more "real" interpretation of them. For example, I've heard someone's view of The Patient is that it is about "living your life to the fullest, but to also be patient about the afterlife." What I get from the song is more general. I feel the song is just about having hope and optimism about "something." The lyrics don't really seem to mention anything specifically, it could be about a lot of things. You know what I'm saying?

In an interview with maynard and billy maynard told the interviewer that "i'm not necissaraly a christian, persay, but i think all those spiritual leaders had their point" so basically maynard isn't a christian but he lives by the words of jesus, buddah, allah, etc. he says he's a spiritual guy and he studies into religion and mythology so take whatever opinion from that that you want.

1. The word Schism came around during "The Great Schism," which was the separation between the Catholic and Protestant churches(both are the main branches of Christianity, I may add)

"I know the peices fit, cause I watched them fall away" is a reference to a time when the two churches had no problem coexisting in the same world.

I'll try and explain it more thouroughly if you're not seeing it, but those are the two most obvious reasons.

The beauty of Tool's lyrics (and their complexity) is that they write seemingly deep vague lyrics which adds a certain level of mystery this in turn has you fanboys gabbing away in order to disect every single word Maynard says. Possibly the most clever and well thought out gimmick. No doubt Tool are a lot more than they seem. A clever bunch.

Tool doesnt have a particular meaning for every single song, their message is more universal. Tool is about getting you to think about things in your daily life. Tool's main message is that of personal independance, they urge you to live a self-sufficient life in which you make your choices. This especially apparent whenever Maynard does an interview, his opinions on today's world are clear. And I agree with him, the western hemisphere has become one big walmart.

I know...everything has its faults. But I'd prefer true freedom rather than what their giving you now. Seeing as how I live in Canada I've been exposed to much of the mass media mindf^!K but none of the moral bombardment. So I've actually gained an eye for the BullSh@t and can easily laugh at it. I truly don't know what kind of media American's have because I havent lived there for an extended period of time, but from what I can sense through communication you guys are stuck in pretty deep. The important thing is not to take a side or rebel but instead educate yourself, you have to become wise to their motives.

Slowly the government has been taking away your independance...making things easier through technology and other ****, it just complicates your life.

Alright seeing as how Dr.Jackdestructo has gotten all this new Tool info and whatnot, i find it to be a good time to reveal a few things. Thirteenthstep and I were bored as hell during summer a month or two ago, and we had met the pervious year in the tool thread, etc. So I thought we'd prank some tool fans, just get them excited see what happens, though i truly doubted anyone would believe me if I just went in the forum after a year and was like I GOT NEW TOOL NEWS BLAH BLAH. Tool fans are smart. So i thought i'd pick up this Morse Code controversy, and see if i could somehow convince the people in this thread that it was a release date. yeah im an a.sshole i know, im sorry. bored kills. anyways. so i was talking to him, and that was when i made that post that i knew blair and had new info and to IM me. once i got some IMs i made up s.hit about album themes, liike light and dark, astronomy and whatnot. hell i don't even remember, its been a while. so Thirteenthstep made this ( i have no f.ucking idea how, it still puzzles the hell out of me) ***-**--*-- = original symbol
Take the first 6 characters, because generally in a date there are 6 characters, for example (09/25/05)

***-**
There are 5 stars altogether, each with 5 points.
The first 3 stars, if multiplied by their points (3 x 5) would be 15.
The second set of stars, then multiplied by their points (2 x 5) would be 10.
This adds up to the 25th, the day of the last quarters of the moon, but Sundays are generally not days for a CD to be released.
Therefore the line, which is one by one persay, would simply be 1 and when added to the others would be 26, Monday.

--*--
The second 5 characters are the month.
Once again the star rule applies, 1 star multiplied by its 5 points would be 5.
When added to the four lines, this makes the ninth month, September, whose day the 25th is the last quarter of the moon.

Blair also affirmed this date, and added he could not make the information obvious at all to his fans, therefore he made it almost impossible, especially by putting the day before the month.

/me emails Blair

Here I was, innocently messaging the beloved Adam Jones through myspace, trying to convince him that I knew stuff I shouldn't, and here's the response I got back from him:

From: A D A M
Date: Aug 18, 2005 7:26 PM
Subject: ||||.|.||||
Body: jake
please leave positive comments
blairs one of my best friends
i hope your kidding
and its • • • - • • - - • - -
A

I saw the subject, and I thought "hmm, I wonder what that is?"

Then, luckily for myself, Adam included the original series of dots and dashes. I noticed how he also included spaces between each character, and somehow, my mind made the connection that there are an equal number of characters in each series. So, I intertwined them, and got this :

|•|•|•|-.•|•.-|-|-|-|

I suppose you could place the dot in front of the vertical line, but either way, the series is an exact opposite, which sort of carries along with these rumors I've been hearing about Maynard writing lyrics about light and dark, and other opposite pairs.

The time is right. Every avvid Tool fan is dying to know what exactly is up with this odd assortment of symbols, and I would like you to tell us exactly what is going on here. If anything, please email me back with something about sausagues, just so I know this link isn't some cheap gimmick.

i got lateralus. it was pretty cool, ill have to listen to it again, didnt match my expectations since everyone in the R&M forum loooves Tool.

seemed like a lot of the songs were just dragged on, but a pretty rockin album for the most part. maynard's voice is too weak and sad at times, but it gives a darkness to the album, which is cool i guess. not a a very powerful voice tho, even on that huge scream in grudge, hes got the range but not the height if you know what i mean.

album is too long for me to really enjoy on a daily basis, average length of the song has got to be like 7 1/2minutes?, not counting those pointless 1minuters. but a pretty solid album, which one should i get next?

It took Lateralus to make me truly appreciate Aenima. When I first got it, I loved Stinkfist and Aenema, but the rest of the album I thought was kind of average. After Lateralus blew me away, I began to appreciate songs like Pushit, Eulogy, H. and Third Eye a whole lot more. The 'epic' nature of the songs on Lateralus is really what made Tool what they are for me.

TRUE THAT!!!! i remember getting lateralus from a store the first day it came out, i had been listening to aenima from tool for about 2 years, i was getting so excited about them releasing new material, as soon as school ended i ran my fatass up to circuit city with my walkman, i bought it, immediatly threw into cd player!

that is my most memorable moment of tool (it was also the most fun i ever had WALKING back ;) )

/starts to cry because this moment will come again VERY soon :)

What were your first impressions of Lateralus when you first listened on the way back? :) happiest kid in the world :) it was a different feeling back then when i had it because i was young, didnt really know what music was about.

I actually wish i could go back and just be a listener to music, instead of dissecting everything. I felt there music as a movement instead of "oh lets see what he means by **** L. ron hubbard." i guess if it keeps you busy then sure its fine, but i would rather be able to listen to it, then drawing fine lines about it. my mentality has changed from a listeners point of view. back then i wanted to know how to do all dannys drum grooves, adams guitar parts, justins bass lines ETC. now i wish i didnt know how to play them.... i dunno, maybe its just me

Post-metal/Sludge metal that kinda stuff. Nice, slow moving, chugging guitar riffs and stuff like that. Great band.

They're probably my two favorites. If I had to pick a third, it would probably be 46&2. I find it kind of interesting that those three songs are all about (vaguely so) out of body experieinces. In Lateralus, it's about astral projection, 46&2 sounds like it could be about transcending, and Third Eye is kind of the catch all OBE.

Thats so weird. I'm just listening to that song as I read that.

30 Seconds to Mars sounded pretty average to me, trying to sound sophisticated with the strings and acoustic parts, but under it all it's just an actor trying to throw a record out. I might have to give the album another chance though.

I really don't like Coheed, but I'll admit it. That "Welcome Home" song kicks butt.

Okay, this will sound really close minded, but its pointless to have 3 guitarists in a band. Unless you perform the most technical crapolla in the world, you really don't need 3 guitarists in your band. I can see where it would possibly be necassary every now and then for a band to have a 3rd guitarist for live shows(and it better be necassary). Its just, crappy emo bands do not need 3 guitarists(I can count two or three in my area).

It just really annoys me for some reason. I know I'm being very ignorant, but I have to get that off my chest. You better be Necrophagist+Al di Meola+Opeth X 100.

clearvision

Coheed stuff is pretty technical, and to my knowledge they only have 2 gutiars, well in IKSOSE3 they only have 2. This creates some great harmonies which i would show you but my comp is bieng a d!ck. Even if they aren't technical the band just may want to have a heavier sound, thicker without using loads of crappy pedals.

Oh no, I wasn't talking about Coheed. Just in general. Of course there can be layers and layers of guitars in recordings, but IMO you don't really need 3 guitarists in your band(this is really directed to these 2 emoish middle school bands in my neighborhood).

Slipkont have 1 drummer + 2 percussionists.I don't think that's really needed. And don't they have like a pointless fat guy who does mess during the live show?
