Does the (near) car crash come to memory when you listen to Disposition?
Dr. Jake Destructo

Oh, no, not so much. It's not what I think of when I listen to that song, if that's what you mean.

I think I remember that story. It's a very trance inducing song, I don't blame you.

Disposition is the lullaby.
Reflection is the cradle.
Triad is the dream.
Cool. This could open new doors of interpretation.
You inadvertently just perfectly defined Meshuggah. Thank you. :p
Anyways, Disposition almost made me die once. I've shared the story once here, but I might as well do it again; I was driving home from a long day at school and I was just having a lot of trouble with life in general. Overload of school work, stupid girls, and parents, y'know. On my way home, Disposition came on, and I just fell into this deep trance. I don't know if it was for five seconds, or the duration of the song, but when I "awoke," my car was drifting off the road, heading for a telephone pole.
Woah, that's strange.
One time I was driving along listening to Disposition, and the weather was this overcast grey, which sets the perfect mood for the album. So I was really into it, and right as Maynard said "watch the weather change," it started to rain and I had one of those moments, where you're just completely taken into those songs. That was pretty cool.

No...I don't recall ever posting there, but I think I've been to the site a couple of times? Do we have a case of deja vu here?

While returning from a tool concert, and listening to this song, well... Right with the music picked up, and he says "watch the weather change". The sky went from a nice calm blue, into an instantaneous thunder storm. The largest and closest lightning strike hit, right as reflection started... It was so ****ing weird, and awe Inspiring.
Very big case of deja vu... very strange :/

EDIT: Never mind, I read the 2nd quote in your post, Otherside. :p Very interesting to say the least. Where I am, it hardly ever rains, and the weather rarely changes, so if that happened to me, that would really be something freaky.

I wish it rained more around here. I love it when it rains, so that experience was really awesome. Yeah, just a weird coincidence though, that it happened to that other guy. For me, it didn't start thunderstorming, and it began as cloudy and overcast, so they're different in that sense.
I'm listening to Lateralus right now for the first time in about a month, and it really is refreshing.

I'm on a Tool haitus as well. I'm happily satisfied with Dredg, Sigur Ros, The Arcade Fire, Radiohead, and The Mars Volta for now though.
I've been in that stage with Dredg, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, and a whole host of Post Rock bands for the past month. Now, I'm ready to get back to some Tool, though.
Dr. Jake Destructo
08-21-2005, 09:51 PM
I listen to Tool at least once a week, because when I mow my lawn, I listen to Lateralus. It's almost as if the album is syncronized with my lawn, because Triad usually ends when I'm finished mowing my lawn. Wicked.
I'm going to start listening to Tool more now after my hiatus. But once the new album comes out, I'll listen to them nonstop for a while. That could be quite a ways away though.
I finally got a scrob (http://www.last.fm/user/Redrawing). They're fun.

I sort of finished a big PT binge. I'm really interested in getting either The Sky Moves Sideways or Voyage 34.
And yeah, The Sound of Muzak's got a fantastic solo in 7/4. Steve Wilson is such an underrated guitarist, but then again, PT is sort of a cult-type band here in America.

Yeah, playing someone else's odd time solo is probably a great way of developing your own. My band is playing Halo for a gig, and the guitarist is learning that wonderfully manic Adrian Belew solo in 17/8.
Dr. Jake Destructo

That solo is a great combination of Belew's odd, discordant style, and his technical ability as well. I like it. :) Too much for me to learn, though.

I think the band met some sort of middle ground. I can specualte, but before Tool, Justin, although dabbling in some, never went nutss with different bass tones and effects.
Now maybe it was the fact he was in a bigger band, meaning more money to spend on equipment, but he really started branchong out and testing out new effects and tones. Although it might have been Adam suddenly deciding to begin following Tom Morrellos example (or by own persoanl choice), and experimenting himself, which in turn, Justin followed.
But, who knows, but one thing is for sure is that any new musician is likely to bring new ideas and have an effect on a band's sound, which is probably the case with Justin.
Wow, look at that big circle I just went round

See the thing with me and justin is it seemd Paul went for a grimey dark bass line and it fitted undertow perfectly and it gave it an all round darker mood.
Then came Justin now Aenima was amde with paul in mind aswell pu**** is an example for me justin may have wrote the bass for that but it reminds meof paul.
Then salival where he showed a bit of what he can do.
Then came Lateralus Justins proper opening. Now extremely gorgeous basslines a lot of high neck and more beautiful and it seems he sticks on top of adam more so than buried under but you have to listen for it and he became a domineering power with Lateralus.

Then, after Justin came in, they were exploring more sonically challenging material, which brought about several of the more gratifying moments on Aenima, and later Lateralus.
The reason I was thinking about this, is because I came across this website about Justin. The following seems like a big load of bull to me, but it just got me to thinking how much Justin influenced the metaphysical and "out-there" aspects of Tool's sound.
"Carrying with him a strange sense of alternate realities, Justin found himself able to access them through music and altered states of consciousness . When Tool needed a bass player in 1995 the journey to America seemed simple compared to the paths he had explored within his own mind. Currently Justin has been practicing entering hypnagogic states facilitated by sonic landscapes generated by his wife Ari and a highly specialized form of tensor yoga. These function as the arc and threads that buoy and retrieve him from the watery matrices and emotional labyrinths he explores. He then utilizes these experiences as a reference point in his riffs and style to induce a holographic depth to Tool's music."
Odd.

Back to the discussion:
Maynard is the shy one who hides in the back at the family reunion.
Justin is the one having a drink with old buddies at the pub.
Danny is the beastly dude who would crush you if you look at him wrong, but would still jam with you.
Adam is the one who would rather sketch a landscape while his friends were playing volleyball.

His basslines in Aenema, especially in the first verse, are also among his best on that album.

Ive read things like that about the whole band, and I must say, even if hypnagogic-astral projecto-lucid-yoga-taichi-arc and buoy stuff is bull, it still messes with your head, thereby having an effect on the music. Any input into the brain will influence the music, whether it be seeing a tree or a car, or making eye contact with someone, absolutely everything that is detected and interpreted by the brain will have an effect on the mind. Input/output.
On another note...
Have any of you ever been to Toolpantheon.com? Its a great Tool site, with neat graphics, forums, etc, but I was just there and it was lifeless! Noone had posted since June, and before that there was a three year gap. This made me sad. *sob* But yeah, it needs a good revival.

Yeah they do.
/Loves Justins basslines.
I think Push1t was a post Undertow track, before Justin's arrival. I cant remember what tracks were done by Justin from memory, but it wouldnt suprise me if they were the darker Ænema ones

When you listen to any LP track, the hooks, the general feel and melody of most songs comes from Joe. The other members either throw in some 5th chords, guitar following bass, simple beat (though rob picked it up a bit on their last release) and terrible lyrics.

In spite of the fact that they have only released 3 full length albums over a 12 year period, and 1 album in the last 9 years, Tool are one of the most popular hard rock bands in the world today, with their music containing elements of prog rock, metal, as well as a brooding arty feel that has meant Tool have developed one of the most adoring fanbases in music today. Boasting Danny Carey, viewed by many as one of the best drummers alive today, and the enigmatic Maynard James Keenan as a frontman, it is no surprise that the band have such a following, particularly after the release of 2001's "Lateralus", which saw them break through thanks to the release of "Schism"; one of the few Tool songs playable on radio. Their new album is projected for release in 2006, and seems set to be one of the most talked about releases of the year.

The Odyssey is so freakin' awesome. The title track reminds me of the epic poem itself and every song is great.

Here, I'll upload two excellent and really impressive tracks. I think they are more talented than DT especially the singer.

Well the new and old bassists are better than Myung, Michael Romeo is better than Petrucci, Russel Allen is better than Labrie, and Michael Pinella is better than Ruddess (and more musical), Mike Portnoy however is a bit better than Jason Rullo. They're also really catchy which gives them the upper hand on DT.
I'll use YSI then.

you cant be serious. I mean the man is VERY good, but come on

Member vs. Member, Symphony X has no edge over DT in terms of skill whatsoever.

Ruddess is overrated too by people that don't play classical/jazz piano. There's tons of people that I know personally that are better than him. I give him credit though for playing a proper piano. His technique is perfect.
Basically when you get to the caliber of DT and Symphony X there's no way to tell whose "better" or more skilled.

It's my opinion because I like their songs better and I have more respect for them as musicians. You actually brought up that you'd take DT over Symphony X anyday. I'd take Symphony X even though I loves me some DT just because Symphony X doesn't get tiresome the same way DT does.
It's also for the fact that people don't believe that there are better musicians than their precious DT.

Wicked was ok, some parts were annoying. The guitar players tone rather sucks, it sounds like a 100 dollar amp with a 200 dollar guitar... the bassist/drummer/keyboardist don't really compare yet. And the singer isn't as bad as I remember, but he has to lay off that weird effect he uses... I have yet to see this talent that brings them to DTS level. Going to edit this post with review of other song...

For me, there just something missing from Symphony X, like this empty space in their music that I can't describe.

Alot of people feel that way about DT.
Anyway seeing them both live was awesome. DT had an overall better show but I'm sure if it was Symphony X in their spot I would have been more impressed. The instrumental acrobatics are better received when seen and Symphony X had a few more stunning things, especially when the bassist was just shredding. (finger player too)

He has this weird swerve in his voice sometimes, almost gives it a strange echo... maybe its not an effect, just a vocal technique or something... when he does his little yells you can hear it.
Anyways I like this song a crap load more, more progression and the vocals are better. But still not DT level IMO.
Have you seen Myung shred Moses?
