Happy birthday to The Tool Page, t.d.n - today marks an astounding TEN YEARS since the site began reporting Tool news! Take a moment and ask yourself where you were ten years ago. This site was right here way back then, and since then has been through multiple server moves, the addition of many sections, three major Tool releases, several tours, nine April Fools' Day pranks (two of which hit MTV News), and one platinum album award from the band. Thanks to all of you for keeping this place going, and thanks especially to Dan Green and Chris Brightwell for keeping it vibrant in recent years as I've been getting too old to deal with it all. And yes, thanks to Maynard, for always being there through the hard times. (Or something.) With all of your continued support, t.d.n will remain a good-times place for Tool people and cool people in the future. §
OK, so things may be really slow in the world of Tool, but sure enough, recording of the new album is slowly progressing. Adam has posted some pics from the recording process to his MySpace page. Thanks to Italo in Chile for being first to point this out. §
Next week will see the release of the vinyl edition of "Lateralus." If you're really curious, you can see a copy of the sales sheet (PDF, 544 k). Some people have already gotten theirs, and have noticed something strange. Michael Bolkin writes that he just received his copy of the "Lateralus" vinyl (through toolarmy.com), and found that "the track order has been changed. The last song on Disc 1 Side 2 is Disposition (as song #8), which now follows Parabola. Disc 2 then starts with Ticks and Leeches as song #9, Lateralus as song #10, then followed by Reflection and Triad." As far as we can tell so far, the re-arrangement seems likely due to technical limitations; no definitive word is yet available on this. Think of it as listening to the CD on shuffle. §
And last, Mario in Croatia writes that "Tool's booking agents have contacted all the biggest european promotors / festivals, and a tour is being booked for summer 2006." If this is the case, coupled with ongoing recording sessions, it means we should expect a Tool record before then. (Amusingly, the first news post ever to The Tool Page intoned presciently "maybe in the spring.") §

Best case scenario for touring: I've seen this done before by a few bands, but Tool could be doing two sweeps of the US and UK. The article mentions Tool's agents booking festivals, right? Well, maybe they're getting on the ticket of Download, or some other large festival like that after their US tour, their Europe tour, and another US sweep?
Best case scenario, but it could happen, y'know. :) I'd be down to see Tool twice.

HOW THE HELL COULD YOU NOT KNOW WHERE YOU WERE GOING ON VACATION!?!?!?!?!?!??!??!?!
The stewardess just kind of blankly stared at her for a few seconds, trying to rationalize another reason for this, and then she just kind of walked away. :p

I'm so angry I missed Meshuggah and Tool. Who is Meshuggah going with this year? I think it was already announced.
I agree with the Tool/DT thing. I believe they would make great tour mates. Maybe one band shows off a lot, and the other doesn't, but that doesn't change the fact they both lose close to no quality on their sound live, have a similar fan base (for the most part) and both are atmospheric. However, there atmospheres are different I think. It'd still be a good show.
Opeth though, would probably be better.

your argument is "i dont like symphony X cause i cant stand the singer" meaning you think the singer brings the rest of the band down.
i think the singer of CoB is a WORSE singer than the singer for symphony X, but the rest of the band is so good, the terrible vocals become insignificant to the whole :thumb:

Taken from Blair's January 2003 newsletter at Tool's site.
DANNY CAREY: The tall guy has a new recording project with Adrian Belew (of King Crimson) and Les Claypool (of Primus and Oyster Head). From what Danny has told me, things are going well and the trio have been jamming with other material (besides that recorded for the album) that, schedules permitting, they might try to make something of in the late Spring. now back to the god**** fix.

Dr. Jake Destructo
08-19-2005, 06:37 PM
No no no no. Mithras's double bassage is actually "half" fake. I think their drummer uses an electric kit, and he uses a trigger effect, which makes every double bass hit go off twice, which makes him sound like he's kicking twice as fast than he really is. He couldn't do what it sounds like he's doing on an acoustic kit, but it's still extremely impressive.

There are quite a few death metal drummers that do that. It doesn't mean their talentless frauds, though. I mean, most drummers are one dimensional double bass wankers like Ray Herrera of Fear Factory.(Who is still quite cool)
I think that some of the faster acoustic players use a left left right right technique, where they kick the pedal with their heel, then their toe, then they switch feet. It's really quite interesting. I guess it's just kind of like alt. picking. :p

Yes. I was watching a Lamb of God dvd, and Chris Adler explained how he played part of "Ruin" with that technique. He recorded it normally, but when in a live setting he does it with that technique.

I play drums.. and what the drummer could have done, although this would be hard as well, is if he had 2 bass drums, he could have had 2 double heel pedals. you kick forward then backward with one foot and you can do double bass.. so he could be doing that times 2 and that would sound really fast..
ps. i read the fastest double bass drum player in the world plays for a country band..?? that messes with my head...

Smells like bullshit to me.
Anywho, drummers that use triggers aren't using it to get double strokes out of it. They still have to hit the drum with the pedal, they can just do it really fast and softly, but it'll still sound full volume thanks to the triggers. As for that heel-toe thing, listen to "Opening of the Gates" by Morbid Angel and try to keep your jaw closed.

Question. I just listened to a few songs in Lateralus, and after hearing the whole of "Faaip De Oaid", i was wondering, how does track 12 lead into F D O? Does it fade into F D O, or does track 12 just end and F D O just starts? One last thing, what exactly IS F D O? At first, it just sounds like creepy static sh*t, but at the end it sounds to me like a guy trying to warn the listener, or asking the listener for help. The end of F D O is excellent. :)

Tool's music is some of the deepest, most beautiful music I have ever listened to. Danny is by far the greatest drummer I have ever heard. Yeah, you have dozens of drummers who are very technical and have great musicianship, and can play macho-odd time signatures from the back of their hand... but no other drummer I have ever listened to, can write and do so much for the song as does Danny. And do I even have to comment on Manyard James Keenan? Tool is one of the greatest bands of all time. Can't wait for their new album to come out.

ticks and leeches isnt really that hard. its just fast and repetitive unlike the grudge which has so many parts that its hard to memerize. but its close.. i actually had troubles playing the interlude on eulogy when its just drums and maynard singing "you claimed..dah dah" and i havent really listened to reflection much.

There will be a small bit of information about the new Tool album in Blair's end-of-August newsletter.

ticks and leeches not that hard?
Ticks and leeches...
How bout the segment after the interlude? That's the real StUfF on ticks. That segment and the entire outro after that. Talk about intense and technical at the same time. there's barely room for breath between the second explosion and the end.
The grudge is difficult in its own way, and what can we say about reflection (amazing) but I've gotta disagree with you that ticks isn't that hard. Unless you have some audio to back it up.

You obviously never attempted Ticks and Leeches for drums have you? I love the hip-hop beats in Eulogy. Those are the only reason I'm going to learn that song.

i know the intro and the stuff after that on the highhat is more difficult than the intro, but seriously the grudge at the end! just listen to it and try to memerize that. it might not be as fast as ticks and leeches but speed isnt everything.. im not saying i can play it but im saying i think the grudge is harder.. but were all better at our own things so maybe thats just it.

Ei dudes. I downloaded the ff: songs off the internet a few months ago.
-you lied
-skeptical
-children of the anachronistic dynasty
does anyone else have these? you lied is definitely tool. probably recorded live from '99 or something.
children of the anachronistic dynasty is either not or very very early (maybe high school) maynard james.
now, skeptical is the interesting one. it seems to run long but gets cut off after 2:06 minutes. it actually sounds like pet from apc and it doesn't fit any of tool's eras. i'd say undertow but it really doesn't fit. the voice closely resembles keenan's. so does the guitar (adam jones) but im really umm...skeptical. what do you guys think? i think it's fake.

I find Reflection to be a bit repetitive after lots of listens. The guitar solos are great, the all tom drum solo is kickaass, but I'm not crazy about Maynard's vocals. It is a beautiful song, and the overall atmosphere is great, but to me, Disposition > Triad > Reflection.

I don't find it repetitive. I think Maynard's vocals are some of the best I've heard on that song, if not the whole album.

Its supposed to be repetitive...Its a very tribal song that almost puts you in a trance if you relax and listen to the whole song. I really like his vocal melody lines as well as the lyrics...definately a differnt type of T00L song...but a great song none the less.

I honestly find Disposition to be more hypnotic. The tabla, the plucked guitar, the three repeated lyrics. I could meditate to that.

You inadvertently just perfectly defined Meshuggah. Thank you. :p
Anyways, Disposition almost made me die once. I've shared the story once here, but I might as well do it again; I was driving home from a long day at school and I was just having a lot of trouble with life in general. Overload of school work, stupid girls, and parents, y'know. On my way home, Disposition came on, and I just fell into this deep trance. I don't know if it was for five seconds, or the duration of the song, but when I "awoke," my car was drifting off the road, heading for a telephone pole.

But my opinion of Reflection won't falter.
