well this is what i use:
washburn wg-580 with floyd rose (i know adam uses a gibson)
line 6 spider 2 412 head and cab, boss metal zone pedal, boss equalizer, boss flanger, boss ds-1, ibanez demon wah and a digitech rp 300a multi effect. i usually am able to cipher the sound that adam uses, but triad is a bitch to figure out. thanks and hopefully you can help out.
Dr. Jake Destructo
08-09-2005, 05:15 PM
Aha, today you're in luck. I have the RP300A as well. Here's what I do for Jones' tone:
Compressor- Off(This is to accentuate Jones' rawer tones
Amp - Rectified(This amp model is based off of the Mesa Dual Rectifier, which Jones uses. Set the gain to about 60)
Equalizer - Play around with this, but I usually have mine set at 2/10/2 for bass/mid/treble sounds
Noise Gate - On
Mod Effects- I usually have this off For Stinkfist, use flange, and 46&2, use chorus
Delay - It varies from song to song, but it's typically on and off in different parts of most songs. Play around with it until you're happy with the sound.
Reverb - Off
Expression - Wah
That is what I use, and it sounds pretty damn good, if I can say so myself. :-D

No problem. One of my favorite things to do is help others with thier musical troubles, so to speak. You have quite a few pedals in your arsenal, man. Is the DS-1 used to generate delay?

I just watched the 'Judith' and 'Schism' videos for the first time....
Schism.....Holy focking schnit, that's awesome.......
Judith...Maynard's such a badass.....and Paz is kinda hot......
BlindWriting

Tool's videos are all great. Schism is so weird, but I'd have to say my favorite of theirs is a tie between Prison Sex and Parabol/Parabola.
The Mer De Noms era APC videos are both fantastic. Judith is a lot of fun to watch, the whole band rocking out in shadows, as seen by David Fincher. Everyone looks really cool and into it, and that three-part scream at the end between Maynard, Billy, and Paz is an amazing moment in the song and in the video. And yeah, Paz is pretty hot.
The 3 Libras video is a must see, I have sort of a connection to it. I first saw the video while I was in the middle of a fairly big change (moving out of my town of fifteen years to another school). For some reason, I was watching the video a lot at that time. Then, I didn't see it for a while, and only a week ago I saw it again, and it reminded me of the first time I met a lot of people that are really important to me now, just because of the timing of first seeing the video and arriving in the new town.
Personal connections aside, it's a beautiful video. I'd love to find out who directed it.
I didn't really care for the Weak and Powerless and Outsider videos. Or any of the three from eMOTIVe.

You're thinking of the song "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums" off of eMOTIVe. It's a "Pet" remix, and that animated video you saw is available on aperfectcircle.com. It's a cool song, one of maybe four that were listenable on that album.

Mainly, yeah, but it does have six pre-Opiate/pre-Undertow demos (all rough cuts of songs that would later appear finished on the albums), the Spasm cover, the Calling Dr. Love cover. So some full band stuff. But definitely NOT worth the twenty bucks I blew on it.

Yeah, well, Borders sometimes doesn't give you the best dels. :-/ I did pick up some amazing albums at Best Buy for 21 bucks though. I got Dredg's Leitmotif and Cream's Disraeli Gears together for as much as I got Ænima. In the long run, I'll probably be happier with Ænima, but you can't deny the good fortune of picking up 2 great albums for 11 and 10 bucks a peice.

I apologize if this is old news, but Joe Barresi was a guest on gearslutz's website. While he was unwilling to answer direct questions concerning Tool, his posts implied that he was directly invovled in the recording process in some way(mixing, producing, etc...), and that recording was not being undertaken at Ocean Studios (as some had suspected). It is more likely that recording is taking place at The Loft.
Just thought some may be interested.

I couldn't get a good posture. My mic chord is too short so I was sitting therefor forcing me to sing through my throat instead of my gut. I need to redo it obviously.
I was actually redoing Lateralus today but then my mom came home.
That would be the reason then, I thought something sounded funny. I'll look foward to hearing you at your full potential :thumb:
Hmm...it's odd, because Jimmy and H are probably the two songs I'd single out to listen to from Aenima right now. Although I prefer to listen to the whole album anyway.

At first, I really didn't like Jimmy all that much, but I guess it's grown on me a bit. I've seen the deeper side of it once or twice while listening to it, but it's one of those "I have to be in the right frame of mind" type of songs, like Disposition.
I just love the atmosphere of it. And the beginning lyrics are really creepy and cool. Probably my second favorite on Aenima, behind Third Eye.

To me, Jimmy is the darkest song on Aenima. Most people don't like that one, maybe because it's not flashy like Forty-Six & 2, mysterious like Eulogy, or evolving as in Third Eye. It's a needed song on an album such as Aenima, where almost every song is a standout track.

Jimmy is the darkest on Ænima, so that's why I like it.
The darkest on Lateralus would have to be The Grudge or Ticks and Leeches.
I can't pick one for Undertow, that whole album is dark, it just exudes darkness and despair.

So anyway, Jimmy's a weak track.
Discuss.
Honestly, if it was on Undertow it would still be one of the weaker tracks, as opposed to being the weakest track on Ænima. I actually prefer Message to Harry Manback and Intermission over Jimmy. I just don't see how the song is special at all, it just seems the most bland and unoriginal to me. I don't find it especially "dark" either, Pushit, Third Eye and Hooker are surely equally as dark? In fact, Pushit is far darker.
If we're talking instrumentally dark, Third Eye and Hooker have it beat. Lyrically, Pushit has it beat.
I understand it sounds like a very personal song to Maynard, but I just don't think he projects it very well on that song.

I listened to Jimmy to see if I understand why most of the people in here dislike it. I must say, I can't really find why someone wouldn't like it. Sure it's not as good as Third Eye or Eulogy, but it's still a good song. I really like the way Maynard sings in this song and how he holds out "home." It seems to mainly come down to opinion. I guess I agree that it isn't one of the better songs, but I wouldn't put it below the "filler" tracks. I like it more than some of the songs on Undertow and Opiate, so it's not all that bad.

I really dont see the need to compare Jimmy to any other song from any other album, do you guys think its lyrically weak or instrumentally weak, or both maybe? Why not compare the song Lateralus to lets say... Part of Me? Both are great songs in their own right wouldnt you say? But when you truly compare them they are vastly different, the complexity of Lateralus out weighs that of Part of me, making it “weaker” in that sense. Now if you just don’t like the song, thats an opinion, since it is my opinion that all Tool songs are perfect.

08-11-2005, 11:35 PM
Yeah, I think I remember that, now that you mention it. I knew there was one person who thought the same, but I wasn't sure who. Meh, I guess you're probably right from a musical standpoint, but that's only half of the beauty of Tool. For the most part, Lateralus is supposed to be an album of inspiration. You know how Tool always chooses the song that best encompasses the entire album, and they name that song after the album?(or vice versa, not sure) If you consider that fact, and then consider what the song Lateralus is about, ("Spiral out, Keep going" great words of inspiration) I think it then becomes apparent that the album was almost supposed to create an almost uplifting feeling.
I agree with you in that aspect. Lyrically, I know what you mean, and the instrumentals as well can be quite uplifting. But to me it's dark in a different sort of way. Like, this atmosphere that runs underneat all the songs on the album add an almost ominous tone to it, which almost builds up until the final climax of the title track. That's kind of the way I see the album, anyway.
Oh, and Reflection is about as haunting as you can get. :p

I'd recon to consider it my least favorite song on Lateralus. Not because I've heard it on the radio so much(I'm a Tool n00b, therefore I didn't ever hear it when it was at it's peak of popular single-ness) but I think it's because it *gasp* drags on too long. I saying this is basically considered a sin to Tool fans, but it really does. That boring section has it's own rights to coolness though; Has anyone noticed how the pick scrapes pan from right to left when wearing headphones?
I think the end is a bit of a misfire on Schism, because it builds to this huge climax, and the resolution is a bit unnecessary in my opinion.
Moses
08-12-2005, 12:06 AM

I love the post rock atmosphere. It's probably better to listen to it with headphones on to get the full effect. Vocals would really kick *** if done effectively. Overall really good stuff. I can zone out to this like none other.
It was worth it.
Where'd my last post go?
I like this band a lot because of the atmosphere, the story that the album follows, and the overall awesomeness of their soundscapes. They employ some really interesting textures with the pedal steel, which sounds awesome underneath the soaring guitar melodies and the keyboards. I really like their bass player, too. He's subtle, yet interesting, and gets the job done.

Now it's your turn to check out Nevermore. :thumb:
Right. Will do.
Although, I generally don't like PM bands that much. It's worth a shot, though.
Which reminds me...which song should I download first to get started?

They're not really powermetal, the vocals can be powerish. I'd say either Born or My Acid Words.
Listening to Born now...I'll comment in the actual thread.
OH CRAP it's The Hollow, my mistake. :upset:
Sorry about that, but let me know if you want it/anything.
No problem. I have that video already, so don't worry about it. :)

i got this interpretation on Schism from toolnavy, and i believe it is spot on.
think of it this way. i think that no matter what this song involves a relationship with some other human being, particularly the opposite sex. sometimes we get invovled with another person, we have high hopes, and lets just say that you had a relationship, and you were thinking "yea we both fit perfectly together."
eventually things will get old, whether you're a teenager or an adult, things do seem to get old, and repetative.
Or maybe one or the other isnt as compassionate, but yet one or the other are too connected to the other to just leave.
most of the times we are more driven to enhance or repair things which are valuable to us, most of the times we cannot throw those things away.
I THINK that maynard sings it with more feeling to show that although this other person is on his bad thoughts and worries, he's still motivated to repair this relationship, because he basically loves this other person, and wants to change things between him and the other person, to make things fit again.
this is the only way i see this song. when we try to keep something we are about to lose, we make efforts to keep that one thing, putting ourselves in denial of the facts, when in reality, we could never maintain, or repair that one thing.
it's a very beautiful song, and i'm in agreeance with Otherside.

He posted in the Nevermore thread I made, and it seemed like Born didn't stick to him but My Acid Words did the trick.

I don't care that much for Born either... but most of their stuff is really good, glad I took the time to listen.

Born was the first song that stuck to me because of the catchy chorus.

I liked the title track best out of the four I downloaded from your thread, Moses. It was quite epic, actually. :p
I downloaded that one, but haven't listened to it. I'll do that now.

I've listened to Born and My Acid Words so far and I like this band, they've got a nice sound. I might have to buy one of their albums now. It seems I should look into Dreaming Neon Black.
