Ions^
The band have often said that aenima is a tribute to hicks, i think he's mentioned in the liner notes. Eulogy seems mainly an attack at figures like Hubbard that saw/see themselves as martyrs.

Ouch.
Iai- I've never heard that one, but it does actually sound logical. The only meaning I've heard about Stinkfist is that it is about becoming de-sensitized(sp?) by television, war, etc..The allusions to 'fisting' become progressively more grotesque, showing how after a period of time, the body becomes accustomed to things, whether it be fear, or stimulation. In this case, the metaphor is comparing stimulation to fear. Both convey a sense of shock, and over a period of time, being exposed to the 'shock' will make you less prone to noticing it.
Yup, that's what I always thought as well.

Out of interest, how many of you have heard Arizona Bay by Bill Hicks? If the name doesn't click, Bill Hicks is the comedian included in the liners to Aenima with the quote 'Another Dead Hero'. He supported Tool on tour a couple times, too. Those samples on Third Eye ("Those musicians who enhanced your lives....." etc.) are from Hicks.
Anyway, hearing Arizona Bay puts Aenima in a different light. In fact, I'd go as far as calling everything on Aenima (not just Third Eye and the title track) a tribute to Hicks. I can upload it if you like.
We actually talked about that pretty early in this thread, however, I've only given a listen to Arizona Bay recently. I love Hicks; a lot of his act isn't laugh out loud funny, but he makes you think. It's quality social satire.

I'm re-listening to Arizona Bay, I love it so much.
I only have a Dylan Moran DVD - he's never officially released a CD. He used to have a sitcom here (in the UK) called Black Books, which is one of the funniest programs ever. Anyway, he's also Irish, and similar to O'Hanlon, except funnier (imo, obviously). He does quite a bit of material on music, too.

I find (-) Ions to be an important track, not necessarily just filler. The transition of that into Third Eye is absolutely amazing in my opinion. I get a funny feeling when Bill Hicks is talking in Third Eye as the drums are getting louder. I think it's from (-) Ions setting the mood, because I didn't feel the same way about Third Eye when I heard it on Salival. Wasn't it mentioned previously on here that static is what people hear when they get an OBE? I think that might be why I get that weird feeling. Anyone else have that happen before? I get that feeling nearly every time that I'm really listening to those songs.

:p that was too easy. i have been expirementing with different tool songs, but actually playing the rythms of different instruments on the cowbell, then playing the drum track with it, its very tedious to learn how to do it.
Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer. Whether it was linked to his drug use (as well as msoking, he also drank heavily at one point in his life, and advocated the use of hallucinogens), I don't know.

I've actually been doing this a little bit. I'm just starting to learn the concept, but I've been learning and half-writing this deal on my acoustic where with my left hand, I'm doing these relatively slow legato hammer/pulls, and with my right hand, I'm tapping artificial harmonics to create an entire, totally unrelated melody. It's pretty confusing to do multiple things at once.

The only part of it I found questionable was the skit on "I'm Talking To The Women Here". I still found it funny though.

My version of it doesn't have track numbers, so it's basically a random assortment of mp3 files that has a logical order I've yet to find.

It's all about the drums, whichever song has the hardest drum part will be the hardest to pull off live. Because Danny is the only real virtuoso in the band. Though some of Maynards lines may be tricky to land, they can be done. The end of push!t and Euglogy's chorus for example. Adam's tone can be nearly impossible to replicate, but to come close isn't too tough.
Moses

No, but I did find a great diary site off one of Adam's friends, which had pictures of his attic with ALL his pedals spread out everywhere. It showed some really odd htings, like school style ammeters and some old looking pedals that looked modded.
Trouble is, I dont think that site keeps entries uploaded for more than a month, so I cant even find the site now. Which is a shame.

He purposely screamed like that, so........

I know there's The Mars Volta fans in here, so I thought I'd ask here:
I thought I'd delve into TMV so I got the album Frances The Mute. I downloaded from a Torrent and the files I got and the tracklisting are confusing me.
My tracks are labeled like this:
01-the_mars_volta-cygnus____vismund_cygnus-jrp
02-the_mars_volta-the_widow-jrp
03-the_mars_volta-lvia_lviaquez-jrp
04-the_mars_volta-miranda_that_ghost_just_isnt_holy_anymore-jrp
05-the_mars_volta-cassandra_geminni-jrp

08-the_mars_volta-famine_pulse-jrp
09-the_mars_volta-pisacis_(phra-men-ma)-jrp
10-the_mars_volta-con_safo-jrp
11-the_mars_volta-multiple_spouse_wounds-jrp
12-the_mars_volta-sarchophagi-jrp
When I look at the tracklisting it's something different and odd. Can someone help me out?
1. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Sarcophagi
2. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Umbilical Syllables
3. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Facilis Descenus Averni

1. Cyngus.....Vismund Cyngus
2. The Widow
3. L'Via L'Viaquez
4. Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore
5. Cassandra Geminni: Tarantism
6. Cassandra Geminni: Tarantism Part 2
7. Cassandra Geminni: Plant A Nail in the Navel Stream
8 Cassandra Geminni: PANITNS Part 2
9. Cassandra Geminni: Faminepulse
10.Cassandra Geminni: Faminepuls Part 2
11.Cassandra Geminni: Multiple Spouse Wounds
12.Cassandra Geminni: Sarcophagi
I used to list it differently, and then, wilst looking at the lyrics, realized that CG started on track 5.

Back to the topic of Radiohead and Coldplay and such. Chris Martin is good at writing catchy little pop songs, and thats it. He can write some catchy piano lines, and his voice has good range to sing melodies, even though he overuses a lot of melodic lines, IMO. Also, his lyrics are often extremely cliché and you can guess what the next word is gonna be in most songs. The rest of the band seem pretty bog standard, even the bassist, what lines are that good? Haha. (Having said this, I enjoy a good handful of their songs anyway)
Radiohead, well, personally I love The Bends, OK Computer and Kid A, and I like select songs from the other albums. I loved The Bends after my first listen, OK Computer took quite a few listens to "get" due to the arty nature, but now I enjoy every song on it. And Kid A took me relaxing with my girlfriend listening to it in bed to appreciate it more, for some reason. It's not what i'm used to, but it's a brilliant album too.
TMV? I've said it once and i'll say it again, FTM isn't THAT good an album. I've heard much better prog in King Crimson or even Tool's prog moments to name a couple. Deloused is much better. I mean, come on, listening to FTM, surely you get bored waiting for the good moments in the songs after a few listens to the album. The boring bits get more boring, and the wait for the good bits becomes increasingly pointless, in my experience. They're capable of better, I think. I found it completely unfocused, but to each their own.

7. Cassandra Gemini 3
8. Cassandra Gemini 4
9. Cassandra Gemini 5
10. Cassandra Gemini 6

I like TMV, but I was a bit dissapointed with Frances the Mute. Deloused was such a fantastic album, so I suspect that my expectations were a bit high for Frances. That said, Frances is a good album, but Deloused is just extraordinary. Also, they catch some criticism of their live act, but I've got to say, I enjoy their live show; it's full of energy and very interactive. It's not my favorite live act, but it's nowhere near as horrid as some people would have you believe.

That's pretty cool. I've got a small set up in my room as well. Not recording, but to go along with my digital drumset, there's a guitar preamp, a headphone mixer, and a bass plug-in, so my band and I can play completely through headphones. 123. I go back then as well.
So now that my grandparents are gone, and Marshall has recording capabilities again(!) what's on the list for covers?
I'm gonna record Shallow by Porcupine Tree some time soon, perhaps tomorrow. :-D
Where do you go to school?
I'm in Central PA....

Heh, straight across the country in Southeastern Washington. I used to live in Lancaster County, which is in PA. You know the place? It's where all the Amish folks live, in case you need a reference point. :p

I don't remember much about the place, as I only lived there when I was of the ages 2-4. How far, and in which direction is Patton in relation to Lancaster?

Powell is still in business? Oh, crap, I thought their whole company fell through when Tony Hawk formed his own label. :p And here I thought I had stumbled upon something wicked.
I think I used to have a set of Powell ABEC-5 bearings on my skateboard.

I've yet to hear an entire Primus album. :-/ Any suggestions folks?

I'd say Frizzle Fry is the most likeable followed by Sailing the Seas of Cheese which is my favorite. I haven't heard Tales from the Punchbowl yet so I don't know how that goes. I actually suggest getting the Hallucinogenics DVD for some trippy post-rock type ambience that I know you would enjoy.

I much prefer the Aenima version.

they're similar but yet completely differnt none the less. Overall i prefer the Aenima version of the song, but whenever i get a chance to hear the live version i love it. (I don't own Salival or any of the live songs :upset: )

Massive slacking, sadly. :p
Hey, i listened to your extended version of Stinkfist. Do you think you could tab out that extra riff that you put in there? I listened to it and was like "whoa, this owns!"
Moses

we need bass for lateralus and then it'll be done minus a few vocal touch ups.

Thats the live version
I cant really remember atm but it was something like this
--------------------------0------------------------------0----------------
-------------------0--2-------------------------------2------0-----------
-----2----2-----2------------repeat ------2-----2---------2------2-----2
and then just
---------------------------------------------
-0--2--0--3--0--2--0--3--0--2222--------------------------
-0--2--0--3--0--2--0--3--0--2222-------------------------
its probably wrong but its something like that.

I'll be able to figure it out later, but right now, I'm learning Maiden's Aces High.
Moses
08-09-2005, 04:31 PM
I'm learning The Trooper and I have it all down besides the solo which is pretty close.
The Trooper > Aces High but not by much. I saw Maiden at Ozzfest and they were ****ing amazing. I did a review entitled Ozzy Has a Six Pack.
Dr. Jake Destructo
08-09-2005, 04:35 PM
yeah, I saw that. :p Cool thread title. It rivals the one my friend started when Head left Korn, entitled "Jesus gives Korn HEAD"
Yeah, I'm finding everything to be fairly simple, except the solos. I've got the first solo down(I tap the middle part instead of picking) but the second one is really giving me troubles, with all of the pinch harmonics and wierd scaling. :-/ I've never heard The Trooper, would you mind uploading it, pretty please?
Moses
08-09-2005, 04:37 PM
Gladly. It's my favorite Maiden song and my band is doing a cover of that with me playing guitar and singing at the same time which I don't usually do. I usually sing.
Dr. Jake Destructo
08-09-2005, 04:41 PM
I've never really tried singing and playing at the same time. I did when I first started playing, and that turned out badly, but I should probably be able to pull it off now that I'm more expirienced.
Moses
08-09-2005, 04:43 PM
I can do it but usually my singing is a little less controlled and it's also hard to do different rhythms while singing. The Trooper is kind of easy to play and sing though.

does anyone know what kind of amp or effect adam uses on the song triad? i have a multi-effect pedal but i can't emulate that type of distortion. oh and does he use a cry baby for his transitions?

Try that or something if YSI is being crabby.
On Triad, it is rumored that he uses around 10 effect/synth pedals, and on the solo, he uses an Epilady. If you don't know what that is, it's used by women to basically yank the hair out of any unwanted hairy places. In other words, it's a poorman's E-bow. Give me a rundown of your rig, and I'll try and help you out, because I've grown accustomed to mastering the art of Jones' tone. :-D
Oh, and about singing/playing, I could probably do it if the guitar played the same melody as what was being sang, so that would rule out most Tool songs. Not that I have the vocal capacity to do so in the first place, but just thought I'd point that out.
And, are you the only guitar playing for your cover of The Trooper, or are you only playing because the song takes 2 parts?
Moses
