I love this stuff.
It's so wacked out and insane!
yea I know, but there musicians. There job is to make music... not make one cd wait 6 years and make another. What are they doing for those six years? From 1963 to 1970 The Beatles released at least one album a year, and pretty much every album they've made is considered great. I just think there slacking. Anything over four years for an active band/musician is too long.
Just shut up.

If you like wacked out and insane you should listen to Mike Patton's E.P. with The Dillinger Escape Plan. Some of the stuff is like musical genius and some is just friggin' chaotic with a capital K.
HighVoltageRockandRoll: You should realize that Tool may like giving the fans their best and they don't like to force stuff because they want to put out a great record everytime.

You speak as though other musicians don't take their time to release albums. Steve Miller had a huge hit with Fly Like an Eagle, and waited 3-5 years to release another album.
Tool is too good for me to ever criticize. ;) You must think outside of the box you dweeb.

He didn't express his opinion, really. He basically said that Tool sucked and are overrated, which is not an opinion, but a forced thought upon someone else. I agree AGAIN with one Ben said about how to express your opinion in the correct manner. While I do get what Iai was trying to say, he really didn't do it in the most fair way. I mean, he is running the poll, and he's really not supposed to be biased, but I recall in his mini synopsis of HIM saying THEY SUCK, TEHY SHOULDN"T BE ON THIS LIST.

And about Tool fans being boring- There are 2 types of Tool fans- The goth idiots who like Tool because they poke fun at religion and other organized evil things, and because they are SOO HEAVY ZOMG! The other kind are the intillectual musician-type fans who appreciate Tool for their intillicualness and their musicianship. The majority of us here are the latter.

HOLY CRAP! I'm listening to Russia on Ice again, and if you have the song, listen to the bass harmonic run at the 7:10 mark. It's flatout amazing! I can't even play regular notes that fast, not the mention playing harmonics on a bass that fast. :upset:
I finally gave in and I'm downloading a lot of PT as well, because I simply can't find it to buy at a good price. Eventually I'd like to work up a legit collection, but I'm doing the same thing as you. I realized the other day I've heard five full PT albums, which is more than I was aware of. I've never heard Lightbulb Sun, becuase I think I foudn a good deal to purchase it and I'm going to do that, so I can't vouch for the quality of any of the other songs (although, is there ever really a doubt?).

Why thank you. :)
We should get some Tool discussion going and stop blatantly raising our postcounts.
Does Dissectional actually serve any purpose? I've never looked into because it's not dial up friendly, and when I'm on a decent connection I don't want any excess downloads whatsoever due to me being really badly overcharged for internet access.

I would guess that the dvd comes out after the album..
And that there'll be atleast 6 months between the album and dvd (even if the dvd comes out first)
I finally gave in and I'm downloading a lot of PT as well, because I simply can't find it to buy at a good price.
I see no reason to buy their rare albums used, because it doesn't support the band in any way..

Cool to see another Tool fan....why did your dad take Lateralus?
I see no reason to buy their rare albums used, because it doesn't support the band in any way..
Late on answering this, but I had to.
A lot of people don't seem to understand something that's so obvious to me, that it drives me crazy. I have never, not once, in my entire life, bought a CD from a band just to support the band. Besides raising their sales by one unit, the band sees VIRTUALLY NO MONEY from CD purchases. If you're really interested in supporting a band, go to shows and buy merchandise there, and download every album you want. That'll save you a lot of money and you'll still be supporting the band more than you ever will if you bought 30 copies of each of their CDs.
I buy CDs because I love the experience of opening a CD, having it in my hands, looking at the artwork, adding it to my CD collection. I don't download leaks because I like the anticipation of going to the store and buying the CD the day it comes out, opening it up and having fresh, exciting music to listen to.

Yes, very well put in only two sentences, as opposed to my whole rant. It just really steams me up sometimes.
Anyway, saw Pelican last night...it was awesome. The sound coming from the stage was unreal, it's like it's not even coming from only two guitars, a bass, and drums. Really epic stuff. However, the night was somewhat downed by the ****ing shitty opening bands. Oh well, Pelican kicked major ***. The band stayed around to talk to the fans afterwards, it was really cool.

Tons and tons of smaller bands have been dropped from record labels because downloading has hurt their sales. While you're really not taking away much money from an artist by downloading, the chances of them staying on a label (which for a lot of small bands is a dream come true to be signed) become slim.
I've done my fair share of YSI downloading, but I've tried to avoid it whenever possible and I don't really download from file sharing programs like Limewire.

As if inspired by Matthew 18:21-22, "The Grudge" urges listeners to forgive others.
Wishful thinking.
Angry at human parasites, a man berates them on "Ticks and Leeches" (once using the f-word) and hopes they suffer for the pain they’ve caused.
Where?
The music remains foreboding, but Tool’s lyrics have brightened considerably since 1996’s Ænima.
Agreed.
Nevertheless, Lateralus]marks a dramatic improvement for the act that has Ticketmaster using a stopwatch to see how long it takes them to sell out concerts (three minutes in Atlanta; sixty seconds in New York).

Moses

Tool is actually against what his father wants though because his father wants to make him into a right-wing christian. Nothings wrong with being one but it's the individual's decision. Tool is about choosing your own path and his father wants him to follow his.
Here's a nice Zappa quote: "I made a song about dental floss but did anyone's teeth get whiter?". Another one: "There are more love songs than anyother kind. If music could take control, we'd all love one another".

Tool? Not Satanic in the least. They are a great band with a message of: 'Think for Yourself, Question Authority.' Ask your father why he thinks that particular album is Satanic. There is virtually no cursing (the F-Bomb in Ticks and Leeches is hard to pick out at the first listen, but you can), although Ænema makes up for any swearing since.
There are no Satanic themes:
The Grudge: Forgiveness.
Eon Blue Apocalypse: The end of something (I believe).
The Patient: Patience is a virtue in any relationship.
Mantra: Monotany and Boring Repetition.
Schism: Rift in a relationship, longing to reunite.
Parabol/Parabola: Love, the feeling of euphoria.
Ticks and Leeches: Facing demons.
Lateralus(is): Spiritual ascendancy, spiritual truth
D/R/T: A change/casting away your old, shallow self/reaped rewards.
Fiaap de Oiad: Ultimate truth.
End of discussion.

Very vague descriptions, yet concise. As for the whole Lateralus being satanic topic, let us keep in mind that Schism has direct ties to The Great Schism formed between Catholic and Protestant branches of Christianity. That is where the term "schism' came from in the first place, wasn't it? How is writing a song about Christianity Satanic?
Oh well, glad to see you got the album back, as it's one of the greatest albums ever conceived.
Jake's realization on the new album
Well, not so much a realization, but more of a in-progress theory- From what i learned from speculation, Maynard and the rest of Tool perhaps have a thing for the Pagan concepts involving yin and yang- Opposites attracting to form a supreme being. Eg. Parabol/a is a 2 part song- The intro being quiet, the rest being heavy, and also the song sounds like it could be about sex, the 'ultimate union of 2.'
The rumors of the album being about light and dark seem to tie in well here.
Just a thought/topic starter

Eg. Parabol/a is a 2 part song- The intro being quiet, the rest being heavy, and also the song sounds like it could be about sex, the 'ultimate union of 2.'
The rumors of the album being about light and dark seem to tie in well here.
Just a thought/topic starter
I didn't Get the album back....He still has it...that's why I came, it's a great forum yall
I don't know if he thinks the album itself is satanic. one of his little friends
apperantly told him they were, He's kinda stubbern so he hasn't listened to it
(and probably won't) it would be awsome if he did though!

I like the idea...just show the whole kidnapping thing to Blair, he'll claim that he is a psychic alien who knew it all along.
Jake, I just got the general idea for all of the songs, so that's why, perhaps, they are vauge.
Schism? I think it's about ultimate division in general, not just the church, but a relationship ("set two lover's souls in motion"). So, I think that's what it is............
That's what I took it for

I like to think that the lyrics of the songs in Lateralus are purposely vague in general. These abstrct lyrics happen to be my favorite because they make you think instead of telling you what their opinion of something is. Schism, in my opinion, is just about schisms in general.
One of the things I don't like about Aenima is that most of the songs have a concrete meaning. Stinkfist IS about desensitization, Eulogy IS about false martyrs...etc.

That's a progression that I like....Ænima's messages were pretty straightforward, and Lateralus's messages were abstract, allowing you to fill in the blanks. I like the idea of them exploring both sides of messages.

I liked Aenima's better because there was more of a puzzle to solve and there was an answer. Lateralus is kind of annoying in the way that you'll never have a straight answer. Poetry-wise I like Aenima better because it used clever and more metaphors.

I only like Aenima more because it progresses better as an album. I'll take abstract over concrete any day, though.

Aenima isn't really concrete, it just has different issues that make it seem so. Also Lateralus isn't really abstract. Nirvana is more abstract.
I don't know how to explain it but that's what I think.

Lateralus IS abstract. You could come up with 49750934509 different explanations for songs like Lateralus and Parabola.
You know what Aenima's lyrics are about.

Well abstract is more like something you can't explain. Abstract is somthing that doesn't make sense but also stands for somthing. Lateralus makes sense. I'd say that Lateralus is more vague than abstract.

(a late reply for your late reply)
I know what you mean... And it's true that the band won't see any money for it.. But it will help them, if you buy one of their cd's. Especially a band like PT who need all the cd sales as they can get.. If it wasn't for the fact that all PT records will be reiussed, I'd say go ahead and buy it used! hehe

It is true that the CD sales will help them (although with a band like PT, I don't think they're in a position where they're in danger of not having a record label), but I'll take PT CDs where I can get them. I've never found any of them at a CD store besides the greatest hits collection, and of course In Absentia and Deadwing. And ordering them new from the internet becomes a really pricy affair because of shipping, etc.

I picked up Signify (2 disc reissue) by Porcupine Tree a few days ago, from HMV for only 14 quid - quite pleased about that really.
Out of interest, how many of you have heard Arizona Bay by Bill Hicks? If the name doesn't click, Bill Hicks is the comedian included in the liners to Aenima with the quote 'Another Dead Hero'. He supported Tool on tour a couple times, too. Those samples on Third Eye ("Those musicians who enhanced your lives....." etc.) are from Hicks.
Anyway, hearing Arizona Bay puts Aenima in a different light. In fact, I'd go as far as calling everything on Aenima (not just Third Eye and the title track) a tribute to Hicks. I can upload it if you like.

I've listened to a good bit of Bill Hicks - Arizona Bay, Dangerous, Relentless, and Philosophy. I must say, he's quite funny and still makes a good argument at the same time. He's probably my second favorite comedian, but I think it's kinda cool about him and Tool working together. I feel that listening to him helps me learn a little more about Tool's opinions on life and how they view the different ordeals going on.

Iai- Numerous Tool fans think that Eulogy is a tribute to Hicks(I personally think Maynard is taking a stab at L. Ron Hubbard, but that's just me) and also the allusions to Arizona Bay in Ænema(the song) make me seem to think that Tool definitely wanted to make Ænima some sort of ode to Hicks.
I also think Stinkfist is a tribute of sorts - Hicks often used disgusting sexual images to shock his audience. Like Randy Pan the goatboy.

Iai- I've never heard that one, but it does actually sound logical. The only meaning I've heard about Stinkfist is that it is about becoming de-sensitized(sp?) by television, war, etc..The allusions to 'fisting' become progressively more grotesque, showing how after a period of time, the body becomes accustomed to things, whether it be fear, or stimulation. In this case, the metaphor is comparing stimulation to fear. Both convey a sense of shock, and over a period of time, being exposed to the 'shock' will make you less prone to noticing it.
Wow, I wanted that to be more concise
sp1406- If you're having trouble finding it, you don't really need to have it, since it is just a 4 minute filler track made up of static and storm-like sound effects created with a peice of sheet metal.
