yea, you can check out some of our stuff on our MySpace account. The only thing that is recorded with the new bass player is "Snippits".
Remember ALL of this is literally being put together in the recordings and is more of a collection of ideas, none of this is in any way a completed song.

Some of the tom patterns won't make much sense as you can't hear the kick drums.

I agree they come from everywhere. I also believe that you can put yourself in a social situation that will make drug use and availability more common.
I think musicians tend to fall into this category more than most. Even if your drug free you will still be around it. Seth and I are in 2 bands together. When we formed Crutch we made a conscious effort to find people who were drug free. We didn't want the hassle of people getting high, not showing up or screwing off getting high during practice and everything we have both had happen to us with drug user band mates.
The other band were in has some mild drug use in it. It doesn't really ever cause a problem but we are around it none the less. It is mainly the last sound engineer we had. He would get all wasted and then decide he wanted to tell us how to play and what we needed to change. We fired him and thought we were done with him. We show up at a venue to play a few weeks ago and BOOM, he is the venues sound engineer. Of course he stayed wasted all night.
It took us a while to find the perfect people but we did it.
Mr Herb
07-24-2005, 11:39 PM
I agree, drug free muscians are way more reliable for starting bands like yours.
My 16 yr old guitarist got so high 2 weeks ago we coudnt play a live show were supposed to do at ben and jerys. Dam! he did get a lot of **** for that, hopefully he wont do it again:)

Yeah, drugs are everywhere. Big cities, and in the country.
I live in the suburbs of Tampa, I guess you could say. Some very nice communities(ranch houses, mansions), and some more country parts(rednecks/trailers). Luckily I live in the nicer area.
Anyways, drugs are very prevalent here. Why? Because this area is boring. I haven't touched drugs, but was talking to a friend who does. He really made things make sense, and made me realize how boring our lives are. That's why I have music and guitar to keep me motivated not to become a full out stoner. He also made me realize how many people do drugs, that I never would've known had. Apparently, weed and shrooms are the real popular ones here.

Back on the whole Tool theme. I am listening to Eulogy right now, hae you noticed how Carey's snare strikes differ from one another. The majority of them are direct center of snare strikes but there are a few that are not and sound different. I think this shows alot about musicianship and them not having producers pro-tooling the crap out of their recordings.
Listen to the snare strikes in Eulogy, you'll see what Im talking about. I think it adds alot of character to the song.
Dr. Jake Destructo

I don't think Carey intentionally did that tho. I tend to play more ghost notes than Carey does. I love accenting drum fills with small little ghost notes. I tend to try to write drum patterns in odd patterns. The first song on the myspace account is actually wrote around patterns of 3. It has a very odd time signature which changes from measure to measure. I need to sit down and solidify the drum track for that song but havent had the time. When I get back from the beach I plan to spend quite a bit of time in our studio working on perfecting the drum tracks.

I'd rather have a chorus pedal if I played bass. It seems more used in Justin's playing.
Ken- Yeah, those kinds of things are what make good drummers great. See Meshuggah's Stengah for some great, layered drumming. Sure, the drumming is amazing enough, but when you really concentrate on the drumming, you can hear these ghosts on the snare. Haake does that quite a bit, probably one of the reasons he is considered one of the genres great drummers.

Thats a difficult question to answer. Alot of it is patterns that he has put together in strings to run together. Some of the actual patterns that he plays are with the Roland Handsonic. The Handsonic is phenominal because it will allow you to play up to 10 to 12 different rhythms at one time. You use all 10 of your fingers and your feet. I believe the majority of the intro to this is all strung out in (man, I am having a brain fart, I can't think of the word for a string of pre-arranged music) strings or pre-arranged music that he triggers the beginning and end.
If you listen to the recording you will hear the tabla type beats continue. This could be done as overdubbing in the studio but I have heard it played live and it is identical to the recording. He was playing the Handsonic when I saw them live in 92.

Ok, I know I'm the usually the resident tone whore around here, but I have been stumped- The intro of H.? How the hell does he get such a 'wet' tone? I'm talking about before the clean part, the very first riff played. It sounds like a different amp, or a fuzz/grunge pedal of some sort?

THe thing I love about ghost notes are they are actually felt and not heard when played properly. You know something was played, you feel it, but you didn't hear it. When I do my sound check before a show I always make sure my sound engineer sets up my snare for Ghost notes.

hahahaha yea, loops! My god. There is another word for it too, I use it in my Roland gear!
I plan to use my SPDS to create and run some of my major loops and use the D-beam controller on the Handsonic to start and stop some of the more laid back drum beats. I have always wanted a Handsonic but couldnt ever really justify buying one. Now that Crutch is poised to take off huge I can justify spending the 1000 bucks for one!

Lateralus has a drum track, and we've got the guitars coming. Stinkfist has my guitar track, which is out of time, and a good drum track. If you have AIM, add DrJakeDestructo, or on msn you can reach me at spiralout7 @ gmail.com.

mariah carey has 7. Jim gillette has the most with 8
Well not counting those squeaking notes she should have 5 am I right? I only hear Maynard use about 2 or 3 but with excellent control. Tarja from Nightwish has only two but has amazing control.

Are you more comfortable in one octave or another or are they all equally easy to sing within? Does this question even make sense? haha
Also, can you train yourself to perfect these octaves and reach others?

Well, singing range and actual vocal range are totally different things. I can probably sing perfectly in about 1.5 octaves, but I can hit notes (la la la) in about 2.5 to 3 octaves.
Seth- See the post second from the top on this page, please

Lateralus is definiatly alot darker than Aenema. Aenema is still my favorite CD of thiers, with Salival coming in 2nd. Aenema creates so many sound scapes and seems so raw. Lateralus seems alot more powerful and dark, it seems to have the most energy of any of their recordings.
We would have to do it on AIM, my MSN is dicked up and I don't wanna mess with it. Im about to go to bed tonight, we should actually make plans for it so we could get alot of members involved with it.

It's just that alot of people say Undertow is the darkest and I think that's just because of the album art. If you don't count that it has some of the happiest riffs Tool has ever recorded.
We should have like a weekly conversation or somthing.
Mr Herb

undertow= raw and dark
Laterlus= dark and emotional
undertow had emotions too, mostly anger but you get what I mean right?

I don't think Undertow was all that dark in my opinion. Some parts of it are and sound like you're being corrupted via headphones but aside from a few of those parts I'd say it's the album with the lightest aura.

This post is a bit outdated but I'd like to give my input on it... I tried to score out the intro to Eulogy and I actually noticed that a way he could play it is the first sound u hear at the very beginning is just a repeating sample, and he plays the shaker/cabasa sample and any cymbal hits with his hi-hat hand, and the "ting" sound in 3's over that with his snare hand (im left handed so I'm not being specific about which hand it is) and then his snare hand plays the clicking/popping... I've got a score of it on one of my computers, so if I can I'll put it up to show what I mean.

Soo time to catch up after the fellows across the pond went for about 10 pages :upset:
Jake - Beats my IQ by about 7 or 9, i can't remember. Hehe GG
Crutch - Sound really good, i wanna hear you in a proper studio, not live, with the drums mixed up properly *drool*. Pretty interesting that I'm gonna be the first person to comment on stinkfist at the end of snippets :p. It's just a shame you cut off just before the pre-chorus :(
Seth (I think) - Your vocals are **** hot. It would be great if you could laydown some vocals for Lateralus, and mebbe stinkfist/part of me if they get finished.
Jake #2 (I'm counting you as the organiser of the covers:p) - Numbers, Chris, 3074326, whatever you like to call him. Posted his guitar work earlier, but the link got banned super-quick. He said contact him on aim for it.
Aenima/Lateralus darkness debate - I'd say aenima is darker, it deals with stronger subject matter imo, and songs like push!t, third eye and Jimmy create a realy dark and brooding atmosphere. Whereas tracks on Lateralus are slightly lighter, the patient, parabol/a, schism. Though D/R/T can send you to pretty dark places.
That should do it...

The thing about drumkit from hell, is that not only does it have every drum sound you can imagine.. It's also set up so it sounds more realistic.. For example, when you use the snare.. It'll use three samples that sound almost the same, at random, so it sounds kind of human
Dr. Jake Destructo

Also, when I get the Handsonic I'll have several hundred more sounds. From what I have heard the Handsonic sounds are much better than the SPDS sounds. I can even record my Sonors for ya.

Alot of times I'll blend in an electronic sound at the mixer with the snare or kick on my 3005's to make it sound a little fuller at some venues. What drum pack do you use for FL rob? I can never find a good realistic one, although I think actually being good with the program would help.
Drumkit from Hell would be the best one. Designed by Thomas Haake.
I use most of those plus the hip hop kick from the pack that comes with the program, since the kicks on the DKFH sound triggered, and the combination sounds great.
Here's a song I'm working on getting recorded for my band and I use the Drumkit from Hell plus the other kick. It's just guitar and the program.

Since we are on the topic of drums, I have a question for anyone that can help me out here. I am doing a recording of some songs, and I don't really have access to a drummer. I need to get a drumtrack for Layla (Unplugged) but I don't know what program I can use to make something that sounds like it. It is in 12/8 time. I am a guitar player, and I don't know that much about drum programs or anything, so if anyone could suggest something for me that would be great.

So then Jake/G Mac... I have given in to the Cog whoring going on and downloaded the Just Visiting EPs and WOAH are they good. The music is very well thought out and conveys a sense of intelligence akin to Tool. I'll have to listen to them a few more times to fully get a grip on them, but first impressions are very promising. I'm VERY keen to hear more, so I'm wondering is the album readily available here in the UK, or is it an import/download affair?
(Sorry this isn't really Tool related :p)

Opiate: Aggressive heavy rock
Undertow: Heavy rock
Aenima: heavy rock-prog rock
lateralus: heavy prog rock
Get Aenima or Lateralus first and then go from there.

I just thought about something concerning the new album. Okay, does anyone hear remember that article, which I'm not sure if it was fake or not, with Adam, and it showed a basic picture of a few teens in the sand and it said something like "Oh My God We're Going To See Tool" or something like that and Adam said they are actually considering the cover? Well, I think we also remember the MX'er deadohiosky who all of a sudden came on claiming he knew secrets about the album. Now, the only way he'd tell the secret to you, was by you e-mailing him some information about yourself, why you love Tool, the inspiration they have had on you, etc. Well, deadohiosky has disappeared from these boards now all of a sudden. So, I'm thinking: What if he was asked by Blair who was asked by the members of Tool to do this. You know, since if the cover of the album is going to be just a bunch of teens excited to see Tool, what if they collected all those e-mails that people sent, and somehow put it into the cd booklet to fit in with the concept? Or maybe they'll take the names of the people who sent e-mails and somehow use them in a not so positive way in the book (I really doubt this) because they were trying to gain knowledge of the new album before it came out. So, what do you guys think? Yes, I know, it's a stretch.
