Seeing as Mr SonorKen thinks lists are boring I think Ill take a shot at interpreting 4 degrees. My interpretations appear italicized.

4 Degrees

Get up and free yourself from yourself.
This is the very start of the song, so its kind of ambiguous what it could mean, but I think it has to with personal inhibition.

Locked up inside you,
like the calm beneath castles,
is a cavern of treasures that
noone has been to.
Let's go digging.
Bring it out to take you back in.
The cavern of treasures is all the aspects of the person(Ill refer to him as Jimmy from now on) that he either doesnt know are there, or does know but doesnt use. Lets go digging means, lets see what kind of potential is here, lets use this etc. Bring it to take you back in I think means by doing what I described for the last line that the person will be able to really live to their full potential.
You won't do what you'd like to do.
By this I think Maynard means that Jimmy would rather just sit and do nothing about the problem and so he has to exit his comfort zone to become a better person. Also I think theres an element of the unknown here...
Lay back and let me show you another way.
...And now Maynards going to help him...
I'll kill what you want me to,
take what's left and eat it.
Take all or nothing.
Hmm...I think he means that he'll kill the bad parts, and then poor Jimmy will have to either come to terms with the good parts and evolve as a person or hes basically screwed.
Life's just too short to push it away.
Its srupid to just not try.
Take it all.
Take it all in.
All the way in.
Let it go.
Let it go in.
I think this has a little undertone to it as in, (dont be afraid to) Take it all in. Basically dont be afraid of living.
You won't feel what you'd like to feel.
Once again the element of the unknown, I think this means Jimmy is going to feel stuff hes never felt before and it might scare him but...
Lay back and let me show you another way.
...It will be better to suffer a minor pain and know what else is out there then the alternative.
If you knock me down I'll come back running,
knock you down,
If you try to resist it will backfire and make things worse, or at least no better. In other words, no progress will be made, which is the point of the song I think; personal progress.
it won't be long now
I think this line is obvious...
All the way in.
All the way.
So far this song has been kinda hey Im helping you, hooray! but now it almost seems like Maynard is forcefeeding poor Jimmy this new life, which opens a completely different avenue of interpretation, basically a dichotomy of whether the protagonist(Maynard) is really the good guy here.
Take it up higher.
4 degrees warmer.
I think the 4 degrees bit might be a scientific reference; a metaphor of global warming. See there are all these scientists talking about how just a little warmer would be such a drastic change, yeah you figure it out. But I think that might be kinda saying that Maynard isnt telling Jimmy the side effects of whats happening, you know kind of a filtered reality.
Give in now
and let me in.
You'll like this in
Don't pull it out.
And this is where its obvious Jimmy is being force fed, threatened etc.
It brings us closer than
dying and cancer and crying.
This is kinda like "Were family! You have to listen to me now!" Kind of a scary cultish blood brother bond. These lines are probably lies.
Come on .
You can take it all.
Just like that.
And finally this is where the "New and Improved" Jimmy2000 is born, with a delusion of invincibility, and now he is just a pawn...Hmm...

Well there it is. The whole taking a good thing and using it badly and the cultish seduction give it the ubiquitous anti-religion glow but as always I think its more then that. I think theres the also TOOL-ubiquitous message of think for your self even if all the answers are there. If they are the right answers, think about why that is. Even if someone is telling think for yourself, think about why that person would want to tell you that. I think Maynard might be kind of saying not to take Tool so seriously that every action you take is Tool influenced or not even Tool any band or person you admire dont be to easy to influence basically.

Conclusion: This song is a warning not to be to easy to influence by any influence you might have. Also its about personal progress, and I suppose might have some religous portent, but I wont get into that.

The End :)

God I hope I didnt erase anything...

H. = bad memories...

But it's a good song, there is a great bit at the end

'well i am too connected to you, slip away fade away'

basically it's the chorus but maynard kinda goes up when he says fade away and it creates some quality tension...

Also the bit before the solo when you hear the echoey 'well i don't mind'

I also think this is one of the best examples of the band supporting maynard, the way the drums emphasise certain words and adams work just keeps the song moving...

Mediocre is Jimmy, Hooker, and those songs that dont really do anything different, or have any memorable moment. There are some, but naming them is just asking for people to disprove me

I think H. has a cool solo. That hammering section is sweet.

Oh, and Hooker has probably the grooviest bassline of all Tool songs. Not the best, but that song just has this awesome "**** off, bitch" feeling to it, and that's why I like it. :-D

Hi fellow Toologists!

Man, what have I missed?

And at random note, I truly think Reflection from the Lateralus album is one of the top for TOOL. Give or take it doesn't show everything the band can do, but there's a good reason behind it all.

My first TOOL album was Lateralus and the first song that really hit me was Reflections. It came at a bad time in my life and it helped.

On top of the fact of having a freakin' awesome tribe beat to it.

Ah, and Pu**** just struck me whenever I first heard it. Lyrics are so powerful.

What's this about Joe's Sausage? lol

I don't understand why Jimmy gets such a bashing here. I love the whole mood of the song, and when the drums and bass crash in with the intro guitar riff, it really does it for me. The whole song just builds up to be huge, and the lyrics are great.

The bass is probably my least favorite nuance of Jimmy. The break between the guitar intro and when the bass and drums come in is a huge let down. You're expecting this huge burst of noise, but it's this dissonant "bloink."

L Ron fought against the armies of Sauron, under the shadow of Mount Dianetics. He thought this would be the last he heard of the Lord of the Dance, but it was not to be so. A Young Hobbit, Frodo, came to L Ron with Sauron's rainbow colored ring. Reluctantly, L Ron helps Frodo become the new "Lord of the Dance" by whisking him away to a computer generated simulation of the late 20th century. L Ron(calling himself "Smith"), fights Keanu Reeves, and returns with Frodo to Riverdance, and tells Frodo he must find Mt. Dianetics, and cast the ring in.

He is perhaps most famous for the speech he gives Frodo: "It is purpose that drives us. It is purpose that rules us all. It is purpose that finds us. It is purpose that brings us all, and in the darkness binds us."

L Ron then married Old Mother Hubbard, and the two co-authored a book, 'Dianetics', a scientific work about L Ron's studies of Mt. Dianetics. Old Mother Hubbard released another book of the same title about an aerobics program based around L Ron's physical exhertions in his studies of the volcano.

L Ron also had a daughter named AirWick, who went on to help Ben Affleck save Middle-Earth from a giant asteroid.

wtf@that

My favorite part is the name of his daughter.

It's AJIG's usertitle. How we came up with it? AJIG couldn't wait for the 'old school hip-hop feel of the new album', and in turn came up with Prog Rap.

The theory's in here, posted a while back, around page 500 I think.

With Teeth was meh, okay...

I was reading the Meshuggah boards, and it had a big thing on DC at Drumfest. They were saying he was being an ******* because legally he couldn't be taped, and he didn't answer any Tool questions. He played cover tunes with Volto, and did what this guy called a "monkey" solo or whatever.

Seems reasonable to me, after all this secret keeping just letting people freely ask questions at a drum clinic would be kind of stupid. And, I wouldn't mind seeing Volto at all.

Okay, I've been doing the recording for The Package, and it's not working too nicely. I need to tweak the settings for the mic and it should be good then. If anyone knows of a good place to put it (I only have one mic), suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

What is missing in your sound? it dsnt have to be perfect, try to tape it to the side wood of the floor tom.

Try to imitate the song but dont sweat it if it dsnt come off perfect

Thanks. too many variables to have one "sweet spot" with only one mic, like i have a heavy foot, so i can put more attention on my cymbals and toms, and my bass will still get heard. depending on how you play will vary the sound, so just expirement.

When you're done uploading and sending, a page will come up with a link, and it leads to the download. post that link wherever you want and people can use it.

Yeah, the mic picks up too much. It will get really scratchy, especially when I'm using an open high hat. I dunno, I'll play around with it tomorrow and try to get the best results I can, so hopefully I'll have it up for listening in the next couple of days.

That said, Maynard, Adam and Justin(cant say the same for Danny) have all tried to conciounciously get off their drugs and try get a natural high. They stated this right after Ænima, that said they created Lateralus, a masterpiece, sober-ish. Personally i dont consider alcohol to be too much of a bad drug....we all know Maynards wine-fetish

I know **** all, but I read something about this one and someone mentioned the solution is to wrap a stocking stretched around a coat hanger over the mic. Or am i thinking of something totally different.

oh by the way, my feet suck so "part of me" came out.....blah......i wish my feet were more accurate and speedy....aenima also involves 16th note triplets, which are gonna be a beast to pull off for me, (if there was a way to hit the bass drums with my hands i would have tried it) :)

the_Leperakorn
07-22-2005, 04:34 AM
Why wouldn't I be serious? I've read it in interviews. but the reason i said "cant say the same for danny" is because everyone knows that guy still enjoys his DMT. Maynard hasnt dropped acid or smoked weed in god knows how long, same with Adam. they all said they are introduced to that level of thinking and try to rereach that level without the use of the drug and its all about using your 3rd eye.

If your talking about the 'learn to swim....' part, it's really very simple once your able to co-ordinate your hands and feet for the H-F-F H-F-F...pattern.

If you get the drum track for aenima recorded, will you be ok about entering it in the July Cover competition?...it would be a collaboration, all that would be needed is a bass part, I should be able to get the vocals done, and I already have the guitar..
