I have but another..
Pu****
Whenever I first heard this song a phrase came to my mind, "It's like stepping into an old comfortable pair of shoes." Right now that doesn't make much sense, but I'll try and explain.
This is the one song on AEnima that really got me. Not only due to the fact in this track, musically, the band takes this song, dissects it, and brings it back together at the end (which fascinates me as a musician); and vocally, Maynard really shows his talent at the end of the song and lyrically (which fascinates me as a writer as well).
But I see this song as the ultimate fight between man Vs. self. A battle against personal demons.. You ever hit a point in your life were depression is all that really comforted you? TooL touched on this before with the song Reflections off of their Lateralus album. This is what I get from Pu****:
I will choke until I swallow... Choke this infant here before me. What is this but my reflection? Who am I to judge and strike you down?
This is where I think we get Maynards' first view of his personal demon, and ultimately it's himself. And the funny part is that we see that he sees it as being a mere infant. Because in an infant a human can really find no wrong or evil in them, and we look upon them as a comfort while they are around us. In turn, this is how Maynard sees his shadow, or personal demon.
But you're pushing and shoving me. You still love me and you pu**** on me.
So in Maynards' comfort and blindness to his demon, it continues to push and shove his thoughts and emotions. And in a metaphoric sense the demon loves him by never leaving, and continues to push the depression on him.
Rest your trigger on my finger, bang my head upon the fault line. Take care not to make me enter. 'cause if I do we both may disappear. But you're pushing me, shoving me. Pu**** on me.
No longer having control over your thoughts and emotions. At times it even seems as though the actions you commit was forced upon you. So at some point you hit a point of no return in your head, which I think is what Maynard means by "Take care not to make me enter. 'cause if I do we both may disappear." If a person hits that spot in their heads, neither the person nor the demon will matter anymore. And in a more literal term, suicide.
Maynard also refers to "the faultline", which is a presence in almost every one of his albums (even till now with his APC 13th Step cd in the song The Outsider). In the song AEnema he uses the faultline of California as a representation as the line between realization and close-minded idiocy of todays world. So in this songs i thin he's trying to say that in this state, he's stuck in something he doesn't want to be in the middle of.
And again, Maynard is talking to the demon, "But you're pushing me, shoving me. Pu**** on me."
Slipping back into the gap again. I'm alive when you're touching me, alive when you're shoving me down. But i'd trade it all for just a little bit of piece of mind.
The bottom of bottoms. That last few moments when you feel you can't go any further. Your feelings are so distrought, that you become numb to any other pain, and again finding comfort in it. But he realizes, that he would trade it all just to have a peace of mind again.
Put me somewhere I don't wanna be. Seeing someplace I don't wanna see. Never wanna see that place again.
This part of the songs is perfect. The music tones down to a hypnotic rythme, and a slow electric guitar playing in the background. Maynards' voice goes into a slight moan. It's just set up perfectly for the lyrics.
This is where a self-realization starts to peak over the horizon. You're looking up from the bottom of the pit, and you notice that your demon has brought you down here. There is no longer a comfort, but rather a waking up from a terrible/soothing dream.
Saw that gap again today as you were begging me to stay. Managed to push myself away, and you, as well.
Maynard has just climbed his way out of the pit tired and worn. He looks back and sees that the demon is begging him to stay. But he's already shoving himself away.
If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay, you minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way. There's no love in fear.
This is were Maynard realizes how much in love he was with that pitiful hole, and saddens him. Knowing that if he stayed he might have died, or just would have gone anywhere in life at all. So he has to persuade himself there is another way to live. And I love the scream he lets out on the phrase, "There's no love in fear" showing his anger towards his self-dellusion that he was happy in his hole.
Staring down the hole again. Hands upon my back again. Survival is my only friend. Terrified of what may come. Just remember I will always love you, even as I tear your ****ing throat away. But it will end no other way.
Best **** vocals here, and they mix perfectly with the lyrics.
Once he is out of the hole prepared to look forward, you can't help but to feel fear of what's to come. "Will I find another hole? Will it catch up with me again?" So survival becomes a companion in a fight not to fall again. And just before he starts walking again, Maynard looks back to his old demon (i.e. self/shadow) and not being able to hate himself (because in doing so how can you have a future without learning from past) but symbolicly tearing it's throat away by leaving it behind him. And he knows that to enlighten himself and become an "awake" person, it can end no other way.
Truly a beautiful song in my opinion. This song can also be taken as a break up song with someone who mentally or physically abuses you. They both have the same principle.
Prying open my third eye,
~daniel

I agree, but the mods latley have been really pushing the "no double-post" policy. Regs like Fast Fingers and Cain were banned for double posting just once.
Hmm, I didn't know those two were banned for that reason.
I get annoyed by double posts if they're like this:
Post One: 6:31 PM
lol yeah they rule
Post Two: 6:32 PM
ne1 else like em
Stupid stuff like that. If there's a point to the double post, it's okay. If the two could easily have been posted in one post, or if there's no reason to double post, then don't double post. :) I usually throw out a few warnings before I ban, though.
Oh yeah..
Faith+1, I hate saying this, but your Lateralus drum track is off just a little bit around 5:40. It's extremely hard to record that part now. :(
I feel bad for saying that because I know that playing Danny Carey isn't an easy task. I've tried to record to it, but I can't get it to sound right. :upset:

He was pretty good pitch wise, but that's not that hard to sing. Have him sing 46&2 and see how well he does....... That **** was really hard. He's gotta cool scream but it'll probably change as he gets older. That's what happened to me because I used to have a scream like that but now when I go for that type of scream it's more mid-range. I can do more varieties of screams since I lost the highpitched scream though.

The typical knock on Tool isn't their lack of heaviness. People think that they're either boring or too dark. I have some friends who like Tool and others who don't... those who don't generally tell me why they aren't into Tool.
I know I've brought this up, but Pitchfork knocked Tool's Lateralus for being too repetitive after they gave one of Mogwai's albums a great review. Interesting. I like Mogwai, but they place a lot more emphasis on repetition than Tool does. I don't think it's a valid criticism in that case.

Man.. The vocals on Lateralus are more complicated than I first thought... Not only is the rythm on them crazy.. But he changes it every time he sings... Plus, he uses a different "voice" for each passage
Plus, the vocals are double tracked... So if I make a mistake, it's really obvious, unless i make the same mistake twice

Vox or guitar or what?
I thought you were gonna redo your 46 & 2...?
I can't wait to record, i was doing a little bit the other day and it sounded awesome...:)
I will eventually but I'm lazy and Lateralus is easier.
Knifeboy one more thing, don't use so much vibrato on this song. Otherwise it's good.
Also the drums don't seem off at 5:40 like Chris said they did. It's probably the syncopation.

I'll probably do better than on 46&2 because Lateralus is alot easier for the most part.
The end of 46&2 was so hard to do because I really have to throw it out there to get it and I didn't get it that time.

Moses
07-09-2005, 01:41 PM
Who's doing bass for that? I also hope they bring out the syncopation on the "With my feet upon the ground" part. It's necessary for the song to be effective.
Anyway I just sang along with the real version and I feel really confident about Lateralus.

Teeny boppers wouldn't sing THTF, one of my mates saw it on CD:UK (pop show) and was liek wtf is tht goff doing? And my ex was so imparital to Nin, when she loved loads of other stuff...basically i don't think Nin has the teeny bopper appeal.

Well I just realized how little of a life I have. Ever since reading about the morse code thing on Toolband, I decided to try and over-analyze it (I always interpreted the Lateralus lyric as a good thing). Anyway, here's what I've realized so far:
The word ( ) seems to spell "stittett", but that doesn't make any sense. Here I realized that there are no defined spaces between the groups (apart from spaces on either side of a dash, which very well probably means nothing). Here's where it gets confusing, with no defined spaces, you now have to interpret where the spaces would go.
I haven't found that much yet, but rest assured that I will squeeze this dry, as I really have nothing better to do with my time.

So I'm going to elaborate on what Herb said about the new album's themes to be centralized on space due to Blair's "updates." One lyric is standing out in my mind that would perhaps be a gateway from Lateralus to whatever's next. "Spiral out, keep going" is perhaps referring to unexplored areas of the galaxy.(I've said it before, I know) I say this because of the galaxy contains to spirals. I'm on drugs, so forgive me if this sounds butchered or anything, but you'll get the basic gist of it, I think. :D

Oh, and on a semi-Tool-related note: When I was in having my wisdom teeth removed, when they first gave me the nitrous, all I could hear was static, and I felt my body get all tingly, and it was almost as if I just kind of paused in time. Sound like an astral projection to anyone?

Well, let me explain. From what I've heard/read about astral projections, right before you are about to leave your body, you start hearing a bunch of static. [see: (-) ions] Oh, and if you've never heard of astrally projecting, it's like meditation, but instead of just relaxing in a sedated state, you actaully leave your body, and you can go pretty much anywhere. :amaze:

No, it definately wasn't a headrush. It wasn't that kinda spinny sensation and I did hear static. I could have been asleep too but I don't think I was because it was really memorable.
Ok, here's my vocals, some parts are double tracked to give it the sound that Maynard has on that song.

Your rythm is off, on the verse and the chorus...
And you're singing the wrong melodies at times
Edit: ^^ Because that wasn't really very helpfull at all, I put your vocals take against the real lateralus track so you can hear where your rythm is off (I love how our backing track is so good that it matches rigth up with the original track).. You did the second part of the verse perfect :thumb:

Yes, he's been willing for 3 months, but has he been putting stuff out? NO! Patient, please do Lateralus. Even if The JoZ suddenly pulls something out of his ***, we would all still appreciate it greatly. :thumb:

JoZ did get the ball rolling on this entire thing though. it was him posting his little bit of Disposition that started off the masses of bass tracks he uploaded. Then it all went from there.

Use Lateralus 2 as a backing. There's enough problems* over timing already.

It wouldnt be possible, unless you change the key of the song, which means you'll probably lose the mode, and it wont sound as angry.
You could try doing it an octave higher. I did that with Mastodon songs. Oh boy, was that bad.

There's guitar on Lateralus 2?.. If it's chris' guitar, it isn't done yet.. So if you record bass, could you do it on a track by itself so it can be mixed in without having to redo everything whenever there's a change?
Dr. Jake Destructo
07-10-2005, 04:35 PM
Mastodon don't down tune. They do a wierd type of drop tuning. Instead of it being drop D, they drop the 6 string to A to make an octave powerchord. At least that's what I've seen on some tabs and such..

All individual tracks should be uploaded seperate from the mixed track and put in this thread anyway.
Im not sure who's guitar it is on lateralus, but it sounds pretty done to me. Mixing needs sorting (see point 1), but its played from start to finish

Yeah I know. I play the D and A string, as apposed to the thick E. But the sound is too, not-heavy-really. (substitute word in).
They drop a step and like you said, put the E to an A. Works well

Hmm i loved it, there is a point where trent pushes the glass of the pin thing, and it's just great....some of the shots are sloppy as sh!t though.
To me the song is about trent getting delirious, the vid doesn't really show that, which is kind of annoying....but it's pretty MTV friendly, which might be what trent wanted, however hypocrytical that may be.

Yeah, thats what bugged me. His work in the past has been dark and (dare i say it) grungy. (look at Se7en, Fight CLub and Judith video for some really dark looking sets.). This just seems too friendly.
But it still looks great, but just not a lot to it.
And jake, i've not seen any links or sites where those are availble, so cant help you. Im interested in hearing them too, but its not urgent

Remove the guitar from the tab
Guitar > Guitar In, make sure its not ticked at the start of the score.
Do that with any guitar in the score, there's usually more than 1.

The double tracking annoyed me in the verse, I'm sorry :(
Your voice sounds very good pitchwise, it just lacks the aggression the song needs. Try to really push through and project your voice, in the chorus you sort of mumble. You may also need ot open your mouth a little more...
I apologise for the harshness, but that's what i picked up on, i thought you were on pitch most of the time, you just need to be clearer and more aggressive...heh you can slate me when i post tomorrow :)
Moses
07-10-2005, 06:21 PM
Oh that wasn't harsh at all. I'll definately fix the double tracking in the verse. Also after I finish the song and do touch ups on 46 & 2 I'll probably redo the chorus in this song. Right now it's not too much of a problem. Thanks clearvision you're always my best critic anyway.

Its missing something. You're vocals are good. They are hitting the right notes. It just seems that you aren't pushing them hard enough. Try singing louder, first of all. And possibly add a little rasp? I can't think of the right word. Just make them a little more aggressive I guess.
