Yeah i put it in with a little sampler of vox, i don't know if i got it in right (hehe) i couldn't get it to fit 100% for some reason...

I think the vox will be ok if i could use the mic properly, notice how it bites with the 'back the way it ought to be' but is too quiet on the 'some say a comet'

Ok, nevermind, the soft part isn't bad, that was just me not paying attention to the song and the tab when I ran through it a couple days ago. It'll still be me "interpreting" the whammy part though. :p

And it didn't dawn on me until now that I have driving school everyday this week, and band practice almost everyday after it, so I'm going to be home very little and I don't know when I'll get a good chance to sit down and record. So I might have to wait until the weekend to do it.

what do you mean biting? are you talking about digital clipping? if your clipping you need to turn the initial input down until you get the loudest levels without going into the red ( 0db ) on your digital recorder. if you cant monitor while recording then do test takes and check the wav file. The thing about vocals is they are so dynamic, that you are going to get a wav file with a lot of peaks and valleys, whereas joz's bass is more of a consistent sound and it shows in the wav file. You can smooth out the wav file (and the sound) by adding some (a little) compression, which will help smooth out the volume, but you dont want a vocals that has been compressed to the point that the whisper is as loud as the yell becuase you lose dynamics.

anyway digital clipping is bad bad bad. And if you mix it down with other parts it really stands out. If by biting your just talking about the yells being too loud and the quiet being too quiet, add some vocal compression to help smooth it out.

edit: also its really important to know when to be close to the mic and when to stand back, as well as to try to be consistent. also, if your getting a lot of pops, go get an embroidery ring (ask your mom) and some stockings and make a pop filter (cost: free to 2 bucks depending on whether you have to buy the stuff.) this will eliminate your plosives (like the letter P) when recording.

Ænema: Guitar is done, we have bass track with MIDI drums and background noise. :-/ CV wants to sing it anyways.

Stinkfist- Guitar is done. Not sure about the drums yet, because I haven't heard them. MagicalTroll is supposed to be on the bass, but I've not talked to him recently.

T&L- Nothing yet, but hopefully stuff on the way. :-/

r0under - thanks..but how do i add compression, I'm on a budget really...i got a good wireless mic. Into my guitar amp, then a line out of the guitar amp. I don't know what else to use to amplify the mic. I suppose if i get good at moving the mic close for quiet bits and further away for the louder parts...

I'm planning to whore my aenima in the July over competition, if thats ok with everyone...Just really need to sort out the midi/background noise...

Well, Chris(307) got it about 90% done, but then Cool Edit Pro started puking on him, so now he can't record in that file. I'm not sure what he's going to do, but the answer to your question is no, there are no guitars for Lateralus yet.

Stinkfist and Lateralus need some vocals, so have it at my friend.

Expresso- It's a possibility. I tried recording it right now, but I failed miserably. I've got my 2 tones ready for the first part (one with delay, one without) and when I tried recording, my cable going into my effects processor would occaisionally stop sending signals, so I think I'll need a new one before I record again.

I'm assuming you have the big avatar because you won a drum-off. If you are a drummer, do you think you could record a few songs for us? Stinkfist and Ænema need non-MIDI drum tracks, if you're at all interested. :)

To me, it sounds like you are really pushing through with your diaphragm...but your mouth movement restricts the sound...really try and open your mouth and let rip...though this is sometimes hard to control...

However I'm really no vocal coach, I'm just assuming thats what you're doing because if i did what i explained thtas the type of sound iw ould get i think...

Check out "Divorced" By Tool and The Melvins. Its on "The Crybaby" Album. It seems to me to be the next logical step after "Lateralus".

I have a Panasound HS - 855 mic and I'm using Cool edit pro 2.0

I think the problem is I don't really know how to compress my sound...and my method of amplifying the mic is not good (guitar amp)...

Try not amplifying the mic, and just go direct in (if you can).. And then use cool edit pro to amplify it (using the dynamic processing effect, and choose "vocal compression").. This way it won't clip

things are...well....not coming. I havent really done anything lately. I'm going through a shift change at work...so now I work third shift and I'm not used to it and I'm having to readjust everything, sleep being one of them. All of this crap just makes me want to work harder to get a band going so i can end the nine to five, or in my case...6pm to 6am....dammit round here, in the country woods...its hard to find people though. I'll try to get some stuff done by the end of wednesday since I have that day off...the thing is I work tuesday so I'll get home at like 630 wednesday morning and probably sleep alot of the day. So maybe thursday. I'm so OCD ish when it comes to recording. When I start Its really hard for me to say "ok thats a good take". At least in my bedroom. I feel a bit better because I put my Mic in the walk-in closet so It helps my mental block that i get from the idea of being noisey. We'll see how it goes. I'm gonna try to record all of whats on Matter's site. I should be able to get the patient done first. If I can just relax in here I could get it all done. We'll see.

You have decent sound and the clipping could be fixed by not directly singing iinto the mic. Hold it about seven or eight inches from your cheek and it won't be able to catch the plosives. Trust me I probably have a crappier mic than you. Otherwise I think the only thing I didn't like was when you held the notes too long, pitchwise it was good and it had a Maynard quality to it.

Anyways I had a breakthrough, I discovered that I can semi record with my mic, straight into my comp...however it only records though the right channel :confused: So I'm like OK, i test the stuff, and it turns out it's the 1/4 --->phono adapter...so hen i go into town i purchase myself a new one, but the same thing happens when i listen to music through it, unless i fiddle with it. However when ir ecord i can't get it to come out of both channels...

Can it really be another fualt adapter? Or am i doing something wrong? help!?!

He he, i've been told I get 2 weeks being home alone in August. Possiblities:

1) My sister has a bass (which she never plays), and a good friend has a bass amp he never uses. So I can teach myself bass in those weeks.

2) We have neighbours who play loud music one side, and a boyracer the other side who shows off his 'banging' system every other night. needless to say, i can make as much (guitar created noise) as I want.

3) With 2 weeks, I wont be going out a lot, and can avoid paying rent for 2 weeks, which means I can (finally) buy a soundcard, and get some sort of recording down. I've just upgraded every other aspect of my rig, so that has to be the next option.

4) Im sure you can think of other benefits of having a house to yourself.

b) i just didn't like the vocals in general, there a littke to high pitched and it seems like this guy is choking on the notes sometimes.

Well that's about it, besides that the drumming and guitar work is pretty good.

The reason I'm trying to help you get a descent recording of them is because I enjoyed them quite a bit ;).. You sing a different melody line than maynard, but that doesn't really matter much since it sounds good

I'm going to have to agree with this. The vocals were a great effort that I'm sure took some work, but they didn't really work for the song IMO.

On another note though, that might be the closest we will come to finding anyone who can do vocals even remotely like Maynard.

Edit: Well, forgetting the fact that I haven't heard clearvision's vocals until I get home.

I've got my 2 tones ready for the first part (one with delay, one without) and when I tried recording, my cable going into my effects processor would occaisionally stop sending signals, so I think I'll need a new one before I record again.

I'm assuming you have the big avatar because you won a drum-off. If you are a drummer, do you think you could record a few songs for us? Stinkfist and Ænema need non-MIDI drum tracks, if you're at all interested. :)
I'd love to, every once and a while I get some nice mics over, I can certainly try to put something together. Let me know how you all have been doing these so I can get the process right.

I'm searching for another recording program at the moment. I'll get it done. I have a friend who has Cool Edit Pro 2.0, so if anything I could send it to him and finish at his house.

I asked my boss about ordering Cubase today. If that works out I'll just legally purchase Cubase.. too bad it's about $300.

If anyone has Cubase, Reason, or Nuendo, I'll gladly accept a file transfer. :)

Chris- Can you do anything in CEP, or is it just that file that's freaking out? If it's just the file, you could probably just save it as an mp3 and then finish doing it in CEP. I'm sure you've thought of this as it's fairly obvious, but I might as well point it out. :shrug:
