It was in one of Blair's earlier posts on Toolband. He mentioned them playing an eighteen or so minute long song and only gives the abbreviation for it (LK) as he isn't allowed to say the actual title.

I'll look up the post if you want.
Oh okay, I knew about the 18 minute song, I had just never heard about LK being the abbreviation.

Well, Frances The Mute is like that, and THAT album is very mediocre. It's too dependent on ambience that it lacks substance.

Now, now, no need to be hating. I thought it was an excellent album, but it does have to grow on you.

Also, what is your avatar of?

The dramatic arrangement itself was about eighteen minutes long, and I would have to say, even after having only heard it once (and, more importantly, without the vocals) it was the most impressive piece I’ve heard them do. I could only imagine what it was going to sound like with Maynard’s vocals, which he was working on from the other side of the glass. I asked what the working title of this organized pandemonium was and Justin told me. Even though the name could and probably would change when Maynard was finished with the lyrics, I’m not at liberty to reveal the working title (in case it sticks), only to say that the initials are L.K. When they finished the song there was dead silence in the room. Adam then glanced at me and said that it (meaning the arrangement) wasn’t quite finished yet. “NO – it IS!” I told him, just messing with him, knowing that he is the consummate perfectionist. “That’s the new single” I joked, after guessing how many minutes long it was (after all, it might have only been fifteen minutes). “Well, my part isn’t finished” he said. Adam then asked me if I’d heard the song that I missed while I was out eating lunch. I told him that I had a couple of times, but that was a few weeks ago. He said that they would play it again because they f**ked it up the first time. Before they began, Justin walked over to the mixing console and began picking through the bowl containing the colorful assortment of newfangled jelly beans, searching for quite a while for a particular color/flavor. Adam also hunted for a certain color – a golden-yellowish one that he wanted me to try, claiming it tasted like buttered popcorn. When the heathen near-vegan declined, he popped it in his mouth and subconsciously began f**king around with a chthonic riff on his silver burst.

Taken from the entry on December 14, 2004.

There you have it.

I made a bet with a friend a while ago that tool will win another grammy for a song off the next album. I have a feeling theyll have some song that will get mayor radio time. they always do.

I wonder if they make em on purpose like that. Like schism.I dunno.

I was discussing radio with my dad earlier today.

I decided that english radio don't play anything with a distorted guitar unless it's in the top 40.

I have never heard a tool song on the radio, and doubt i ever will. The closest thing we have to radio that plays sme tool is MTV2, I have seen Sober on there once, and Schism once too.

Many radio stations in england are part of the same network, they play pop songs, mainly from the 90's, not too much new stuff. Most hxC stuff you find is Green Day :(

I've been a fan since undertow...I was really into metallica, pantera, slayer and megadeth and so forth at the time.(my older bros were listening to that stuff so I was to...8/...)
I wasn't even playing drums yet I was like 13-14 years old and had heard sober and was like WTF....So I ganked the CD from my brother and after playing it through once I instantly knew there was something really amazing and different about this band, and I've listened to them pretty much everyday since. Thier music has actually pulled me out some tough times(through thier very difficult to decipher positive message of course.)

I found out by doing stuff like this that I love mixing. I did about five seperate tracks in the middle interlude...probably more than maynard does...on the verge of getting crowded but I hope its not so that you might have to "dig" through it a few times to hear everything. Like when you first heard stinkfist you were like thats awesome..then one day you hear another whisper..then another...etc. But i had a ball trying to use the crappy audacity effects to get something decent. I've heard Tool played in some weird places. MTV shows seem to use Parabola a fair bit.

For the brits - there was a show on BBC2 not long ago that had a different challenge to be complete each week that required a machine to be created (like a clever version of Scrapheap challenge). For some reason, they played Ticks And Leeches in the background for one episode, which caught me off guard in a WTF? stance

I recorded Stinkfist for the fourth time about an hour and a half ago. I pulled it off PERFECTLY!!! Tone was good, playing was nearly flawless...

I exported it as an mp3, saved it, and closed Audacity.

I then went to upload it to the new soundclick right now.

I looked for the file and found Stinkfist-446 kbs.

That's not the typical size of a 5 minute song, now is it?I got suspicious, so I opened it in WMP. It was a 44 second clip of my recording.

I would like to say this again..

EDIT: [size=1]I just recorded it again, and pulled it off pretty good. There are a couple of errors, HOWEVER, it's all sync'd up good. (That was the biggest surprise for me.) I'll post it once I get it uploaded to the new soundclick. :thumb:

I got a little carried away in the "how could this mean anything to me" part. I put a little bit of crazy background harmony ala APC...but I tried to keep it kinda in the background but I can always drop those tracks later. I've always liked that part and today I just kept hearing "voices" in all of that chorus and flanger or whatever it is...so I decided to record it to see what it would sound like and i kept it. Nah, there isn't really that much information yet that we know of. All that I think is known is that they are recording it now (and probably almost done) so it should be out by the end of the year, there's a 17 minute long song on the album I think, they said something about being influenced by bands like Meshuggah and Fantomas so the drumming will probably be a bit more intense and maybe the songs will be heavier too. Hmm, I can't really think of what else. Tool really likes to keep things behind closed doors.

Hey AJIG, your computer ok yet?
Or can you not upload that song today?

It's cool either way.

Sorry, no can do. I've had multiple crashes today, so if anything its worse. I blame the heat. I will do it as soon as I can though, or you could ask someone else who d/l'd it first time around

Plus its 11 here, and I need my beauty sleep before my job malarky tommorrow.

And Rob, your clean tone was awesome, original yet effective. Your distortion tone is better than your other examples, but its cut in volume doesnt tie in well with your clean, which affects it a lot.

You can download 46&2 from their soundclick, but you can only stream The Patient.

Smashing Pumpkin-I just signed up yesterday. Same user name as here, same avatar too. I'm a level 2 poster already.

Merkaba- Did you sing Stinkfist along with the original to pace your self, or what?
Ok..I'll get that 46 and two.

I just downloaded the stinkfist off of the site...and played it through my speakers and sang along with it...not the best option. My headphones wouldnt reach from the comp under the table up to my mic. Thats how i like to record vocals. But oh well.

Ok, I was just worried about you singing to a track that isn't the one that we're gonna use. My reason being if you didn't sing to that backing track, chances are it would have been wayy out of time. Now are you going to upload it?

Ben-How does he control it with his feet? Could you elaborate on this some? The way I control feedback is just by hitting a harmonic, and fading my volume. :p It's not really feedback, but I suppose you can achieve some what of the same effect that way. :-/

I think the main reason of mine for never seeing it was that I lost my case/book the day I bought the CD (I was cleaning out my room and somehow it got mixed in with my garbage).

Oddly enough I've never actually read about it, and I've read hundreds of Tool related articles.

I just heard another rumor about the new album/DVD/whatever. Someone who lives in England said she saw a poster advertising the new Tool album, to be released August 23rd, in the window of a record store. She asked the record store owner if this was true, and he said that 'something' regarding Tool will arrive August 23rd. What do y'all think?

I can't find anything on this anywhere (yet). That's not to say that it isn't true (I sure hope it is), but yeah...if it is, they're keeping it quiet. If it is true though the next update will probably be Blair talking about how the band are really into new sorts of carpet in the room leading into the studio these days, in keeping with his habit of never actually telling us anything particularly relevant/clear.

Did you get my response on Toolshed, rounder? I asked you for an mp3 of The Patient, thanks. :D

btw, the teleincision site is registered to someone living in Arizona, and the company that it was made by did not have anything to do with Dissectional, Toolband, or Toolshed. Chances are the sites a fake. However, the artwork you see on that very page is Tool's new logo. :thumb:

I've been having out on Toolshed too much lately. :p

In other news: Due to the fact that mx was down most of the day, I learned 46&2. I'd say the chorus to that song is one of the funnest riffs to play. For the tone, I use my regular Jones distortion, minus delay, plus a little chorus. For the intro I play with out a pick to make it sound softer and smoother, and for the rest, I use my pick for that agressive sound. Go me!

No, I didn't. I've been busy, and my girlfriend's leaving for the whole summer.

Also I'm about to record one of my band's songs right now. I won't have it done tonight and I don't think I'll put vox on the recording until we've practiced it a couple times. I usually write and record the songs and then we practice them, thing is I don't know exactly what I want the vocals to be like yet and the best way to figure it out is with the band.

I heard Zep's version long before I heard Tool's cover, and I would have to agree with you. They are both outstanding songs, but Tool's version far surpasses the original. They did make it 4 whole minutes longer than Zep's, and with Tool, the longer the better is typically the case.

Ok, here's what I recorded today. Just so you know, it's not any Tool cover or anything, it's actually for my band that I sing in. All I have are keyboard drums and guitar. This is only like the first quarter of the song and it goes through alot of moods all together, but I didn't get that far. Any way here it is.

I liked it, but I wish you wouldn't have repeated the harmonic part for what I assume is a verse, but other than that it was a good build up to the heavy guitars. Perhaps base the verse on the harmonic part, but add some variation and then go back into the chorus/heavy riff.

Well I was also thinking that, but the vocals will give it enough once they're in. If it becomes a problem I definately will change it.

Yeah, the vocals start at 1:03ish. Also I have no bass in there so the harmonic part can be a little tedious at this point. Anyway it's a long song.

I'm going to start a record collection now that I have some loose cash to throw around. I figured a good place to start was Tool. I've found Opiate, Undertow, and Aenima vinyls so far. Does anyone know where I can find Lateralus on vinyl? I've checked the local stores around here, as well as Ebay with no luck. Also, is there an vinyl version of Salival?

Sort of. One thing you should know is that their guitarist does not do "solos" in the sense of Metallica or a band like that. His solos are more about furthering the song than about showing off. Yes, their songs are complex. Many of their songs have a whole bunch of different sections to them. I'm not exactly sure I would say that they build up to huge crescendos. I think all of their songs get harder as they go on, but if you expect them to all have some type of epic ending to them in the sense of Dream Theater's "Octavarium", than you are mistaken (even though their songs do have great endings to them). Then again, you might not be asking this at all and I'm just reading your question wrong. I don't know. The best advice I can give is to just hear some songs for yourself.

NO idea. Tool is widely considered to be progressive hard rock, although they do have some legit metal songs. As a pop/punk fan such as yourself, I think that the best song to check out of Tool's would be 46&2 because it's catchy (for Tool) and is easy to get in to. The bass intro is also...amazing...

^I did...it was actually recorded about 4 years ago...I know I played it wrong on a lot of the parts + the floor tom mic cut out during the whole song 8/. I should re-do it now I can play it fairly accurate(the fill leading into teh last chorus is bad-azz).

The vocals came out good...like you said it was pitchy sometimes and its hard to scream bloody murder in an apartment, but keep singing and practicing you have the makings of a killer voice IMO.
