After the first viewing, no I had no idea what was going on. But I think that's kind of the idea. It stayed with me for several days afterwards, and I just thought about it a lot. I saw it a second time, and things started falling into place. After the third time, I had reached some conclusions about what it was about.

A great deal of the appeal is the mind-bending surrealism and the lush Noir quality. It also explores a subject that absolutely fascinates me. (and I can't say I didn't enjoy the steamy lesbian scenes to a great degree :naughty: ) I actually am working on a write-up analysis for it for a website, I'll post it here when I'm finished.

If you're a fan of surrealism and dark, strange movies I recommend them strongly. Mulholland in particuluar, I find that movie to be a masterpiece. I didn't like Blue Velvet, because it was very..straight-forward. I don't like mysteries much, either. I recommend Eraserhead as well, but be prepared to come out of it feeling weird.

That's actually the only part of the movie I've seen... (yeah, I know.) But I'm definitely interested.

And now that you mentioned surrealism, has anyone here ever seen Un Chien Andalou? It's a seventeen minute short film made in the 1920's, by Luis Bunel and Salvator Dali, and is one of the pinnacles of surrealism. I got the chance to see it at a rare (at the time) screening in NYC. Very amazing and strange. I highly suggest checking it out, now that it's available on DVD. It's opening minute is probably the most shocking in early cinema.

I kind of like all those hidden messages and stuff. Good work.

And Tricky played the guy in the Parabola video who had those things coming out of his head. His little bouncy alien friend was killed by the floating orb.

And if someone wants to explain the symbolism in that video, I would love it.

Wear your grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell.

Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end.
Saturn ascends, comes round again.
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten. Ignorant to the damage done.

Wear your grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what you will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Wear the grudge like a crown. Desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. And we're sinking deeper.

Defining, confining, sinking deeper. Controlling, defining, and we're sinking deeper.

Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent.
Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go.
Choose to let this go.

Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor.
Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold.

Let go.

I bolded the parts that confuse me.

Basically, I would like to know what the significance of Saturn is, why 'choose one or ten' wtf a Scarlet Letterman is, and why I want to hold onto this cornerstone.

Thx in advance

The Scarlett Lettermen thing I'm almost positive is a reference to the book called The Scarlett Letter. The book is about a girl who wears an A on her chest that stands for adultory because she had an affair with another man. She was looked upon by everyone as a slut, when all she did was simply love another person.

Note: Her real husband lived in like, another country or something so it made more sense then what I typed first.

The cornerstone thing I'm not really sure about, but this is what I thought of it as:

If I'm right, which I might not be, a cornerstone is something you would hold onto when climbing something. So if you don't hold on to it tightly, it will all come down. So whatever you translate as "it" being clutched should be held on to.

There is some religion or belief system whose name I can't remember now, but when Saturn returns to the position it was at when you were born, which takes 30 years to do, you are supposed to give up all your grudge's.

On the topic of "The Grudge, I believe the thing about Saturn and every 27 years and reinventing your life is true. The Scarlet Letterman is pretty obviously a reference to "The Scarlet Letterman", and maybe the song is actually about someone who was wrongfully accused of something and he can't let it go and he's still very angry about it. Maybe The Grudge is Maynard talking to himself, who knows? Oh, and I also have no clue what "Choose one or ten" means. A cornerstone is the basis of something. If you clutched a grudge as your cornerstone, it would mean that you would hold that as a strong belief of how to live life. Did that make sense? It's kinda' hard to put into words.

I like how it's sounding so far. It's just a couple riffs thrown together into a minute song. I'm gonna expand on it once I have more ideas, but I just wanted to record it so I didn't forget it. It sounds slighty Jones-ish*.

Slightly Jones-ish = Not Jones-ish at all. :P. Actually, I can hear the Jones influence in there, but it's a good riff. The other one is good as well.

In The Grudge, I'm sure what you've all said about Saturn coming around every 27-30 years or so.

The Scarlet Letterman line, well when I first heard it I immediately thought of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Like someone already said, the main character has to stich the letter A (Adultery) into her blouses and always has to wear it to show everyone she was an adulteress. Her husband married her because she was young and beautiful but he didn't really love her. So when she moved to a Puritan settlement in New England and he stayed in England, she had an affair with a minister named Dimsdale. The whole settlement looks down on her (Unable to forgive her) and wants to take her baby away.

So out of that I got: Someone who did something wrong and someone else holds a grudge against them for it.

The cornerstone thing, a cornerstone (literally) is the basic foundation block of a building. But in this case it most likely means a basic principle or ideal. The song doesn't say Clutch the cornerstone, it says Clutch IT like a cornerstone, meaning-Hold onto this (possibly the grudge that you bear) like it's the most important thing you have.

At least that's what I got out of it.

Still using my PC mic, but now I use Audacity instead of Gayfag-Wave. :p

Makes a ton of difference. I think it has more Daron Malakian influence than anything. Glad you guys like it.

Ben, I know you've been curious about Team Sleep, and I'm not sure if you've bought their album yet or not. All I can say is that it's pretty average, and close to what I expected. The production on it is terrible, but the songs range from great to bad and everywhere in between. The drumming is awful, but it's just not my style.

I just got back from seeing Team Sleep live, and it was an okay performance. Chino basically drives the band, and, at the risk of sounding like a Chino fanboy (which I'm not), he's really the only reason I enjoyed the show. Overall it was too noisy, the light-show aspect was nonexistent, and the drummer was annoying. I must say I spent the majority of the show yearning for Chino to rip off his guitar and the rest of Deftones to file onto the stage.

I know you've criticized Chino's voice in the past, but really it was right on the entire night. His singing was great, and probably the best aspect of Team Sleep's live show. His vocals are great live. Perhaps he's improved significantly since you've seen him, or maybe he sounds better in smaller venues, but this makes three for three great vocal performances that I've seen from him.

Chino sounds awesome at Donny (first time i saw Deftones, 2003, before thier shocking Wembley gig), so I hope he keeps it up.

Re-reading through my post, I realize I might have been a little harsh. I do recommend that you see them when you get the chance, because it is an enjoyable show.

I guess they're playing at Download (?) when you'll see them, so I'm assuming they won't have the same opening band, but they were great. It was forty minutes of instrumental improvs that were very atmospheric and ambient. I liked their set a lot, but unforunately it's a very new and unknown band, and I haven't been able to track down any of their material or info on them.

Team Sleep is pretty much what I expected...but for some reason I just don't like the way it sounds. To me, it sounds messy or something. I can tell the sound they're going for, and it seems to come short of the mark. I heard Kool-Aid Party (a song that isn't on the album) and it was just this crazy, unique, trippy song and I wish there were more things like that. I love Tomb of Leige (sp?), Your Skull Is Red, and Blvd Knights. I give it a 6.5/10.

And I love S/T Deftones. It's tied with ATF for my favorite from them. I was listening to that today as well.

They have two sides for me. The side that makes the good original music, and the side that makes the generic dance turd.

And to Otherside when he reads this, Samurai Champloo is AWESOME! I got to watch it at my friends (who is a big anime nut), so we set it up on his TV (we have the power), and watched it in all its glory. We spotted the spike-esk parts straight away, but it still felt unique.

However, the scene changes between the two fights got annoying with the scratching screen transitions.

You guys both seem to be in a fairly sucky situation. For me, I have no chance of being in a band for a couple reasons.

1. I've only been playing for 8 or so months, so I doubt any established musicians would want to creep at my pace. :p
2. The area I live in is 3/4 hispanic. Mexicans don't like rock. I like rap
3. Right now I am engulfed in school, and when summer hits, I'll be working full time.

However, I've been trying to convince one of my friends to pick up drums again. He did percussion for our school's band for 3 years, then gave it up when he hit high school. I'm not sure how adept he is with a full kit, but it would be worth a shot. That would be a fun project. :p

You know, you wouldn't even have needed that insincere sentence in parentheses if you weren't obtuse enough to call people "rap loving fags."

Palm muted bit. The verse one is great to play, but its just when it goes into MJK more regular rythym singing part ("As below, so above and beyond, I imagine" - part). It just gets me fuddled

Though its probably out of hatred of doing a rythym section in a song for a longer time than lead, thats made me lazy enough to not bother playing it properly
That part is tricky, and it's what made me not play that song for awhile, because I'd get there and start ****ing it up and never go any farther. It gets lost in the bass, drums, and singing. But if you sit down, turn it up, and really concentrate, you hear it perfectly and you can get it down pretty easily. I also don't use powerchords for it, because it doesn't sound like a chord to me, I just use the root notes.

I do the same trick with Ænema, sod the chords, do the root, add the high D every now and again for the 'clincking' effect.

Plus root notes allow for more messing about* than chords.

Yeah, exactly. The chords in that section make it sound too bloated, because the bass and drum parts are really making it heavy already there. Plus, I do throw in a few little slides and things to make it more interesting.

Personally? A bit, but i struggle.

But as in software purpose, yes you can. You can write out the guitar and bass score on tab lines, and you add the note types, etc.

Its not as easy as GP's ol' click-the-fretboard thing, but its ok to use and piece together songs. And there is a large database of pre made songs available from its ite too

And I know that wasnt aimed at me, but I like talking :upset:

Refresh me. Are you talking about song order at all, or something else?

Futuro
05-20-2005, 02:46 PM
it has to do with song order and layering the tracks correctly. Aiden poured his heart and soul to decipher lateralus but he was overshadowed by some dimwit who said play the songs in a certain order dont worry about the layering process and youll have the same effect..... what a dumb as$

what really happened is that no one figured out how to listen to it corectly because someone said there was a code before him (it was wrong) it turns out theres a ton of stuff on the cd lateralus that most people dont know. as in ticks and leeches are 2 different songs(ticks being the beggining of the end and leeches being the absolute end with 3 songs in between) if you check out the lenght of mantra you will notice it fits perfectly in the "soft gap" of schism (think about it I know the peices fit). the simalarities do not end there.

I do not worship Maynard.

Things I found cool in it:

The way Faaip De Oaid fits in the long mellow part of Ticks And Leeches (perfectly)
The Parabola to Lateralus section (I messed it up, it shoudl fit the first note perfectly on the last harmonic)
Mantra to Parabol is pretty sweet.
