I actually got into Tool after hearing Schism on the radio. It was a freak chance, I guess, and a good one. I remember thinking, "Now this is a really weird, cool song." I went home and downloaded it along with Sober and loved it.

I first heard of them when I was watching MTV (back when they played some good music videos) in '99 or '00. And I saw the video for Sober. I liked the song and the video, but then I forgot the band name and the song title. I saw it again a few weeks later, and bought Undertow.

And if all I heard was Schism, I wouldn't have gotten into them. I really wasn't impressed with that song when it came out.

Edit: Actually, the problem with Schism was probably that it was overplayed. LOL, yeah, I said it.

Very nice thread. I've been a major Tool fan for almost 10 years, and like other bands that I LOVE (like Radiohead), they've only improved as they've evolved as a group. It's amazing to listen to Opiate - Lateralus: you practically feel like you're listening to a whole different band.

Well, I had never heard the song, and I liked it a lot. I still do like that song, luckily it wasn't overplayed for me.

I think another reason I might have overlooked is that I saw some guy at school wearing a Tool t-shirt, and the artwork on it really intrigued me. I forgot about them for a week or so and that's when I heard Schism on the radio and was impressed by it.

I agree with In Chains. When Schism became a single it was very overplayed. Now that I haven't heard it in awhile though, it's a very good listen.

Over here (The UK), i'm fairly sure 99.9% of people don't know who Tool are. At my school, i've only heard one other person mention them, he's an APC fan and dosn't like/hasn't actually heard much Tool stuff.

I've never heard them on the radio or on music TV channels over here. This could be due to not listening to the radio too much and me being into Tool since 2002 onwards (Prison Sex was the only song I actually knew by them back then tho, I think a friend recommanded it while I was listening to some nu-metal crap), so maybe I wasn't aware when Tool's influence was the biggest, even so... Very obscure band over here.

My first experience with Tool was hearing Schism (although I didn't realize that it was Tool at the time). I found out it was by Tool later and soon afterwards heard Sober as well.

I only really got into them after I heard Stinkfist (or "Track #1" as MTV2 so gracefully refers to it). I bought Ænima soon after and fell in love with it, then bought Lateralus off of a friend not too long after that. Undertow soon followed. Still don't have Opiate or Salival though....

True. I've managed to spread the seed of Tool throughout my town slowly, but now people are switching to APC, thanks to their short attention spans.

And adding to Too on TV, I remember when Parabola was first released, MTV2 played it back to back for an hour, just repeating. Nice treat

Our school is like a Tool madhouse. Seriously, except for most of my friends, you can go up to any male (and some females) and ask them how much they're waiting for the new album and they'll kill you for reminding them of it.

APC is huge as well, I even saw a, well, you know in those magazines how they have those ads for mobile phone ringtones and backgrounds bla bla bla? Well in one magazine there was a APC one. Pretty cool if you ask me.

I got into Tool because people on the Pearl Jam forum said they're awesome. Then I asked my Mum's wanker boyfriend (at the time) if he liked them and he said I probably would, and they're like a heavier Live. AHA! AHAHAHAAH!!!!! Ahhhh what a funny guy. But yeah then I asked a guy at school about them and he lent me Ænima. I hated it, loathed it at first, but only because of the length. I thought the vocals were extremely cool, and the music overall was awesome, but yeah. Then I got the rest of them off a fan (not a true fan though... "ohhh yeah Tool, they're so f*ckin' heavy man"), and still hated them, but one time I read the lyrics to Stinkfist and WOH they suddenly became awesome. A little strange.

It's an amazing part. I like how it reflects the part immediately after it. Same beat, just louder. Cool stuff. Makes the part following even better; a good "buil-up" if you will.

I can confidantly say that I am not a fanboy either. I like a lot of other bands and I am also critical of some of the stuff they do. One thing I CANNOT stand, however, is when somebody blindly criticizes a band I like. Explain yourself, or get flamed. That's my philosophy. Meh, maybe I'm wrong. I just don't like it.

Since it is out of print now, it is kinda difficult to find but you could look for it on ebay. the prices on it usually go pretty high though. I'm not sure if there is actually another place where you can get it.

there's finally some sort of update on the Tool site. Nothing new about the album or the band though but anyway. It talks about some hidden song on the Opiate vinyl that some people are able to listen to and others are not (something about where the needle lands). I was just wondering if anyone in here owns the vinyl and if so have you been able to access that hidden track?

Yeah, I agree. The first note onwards he was really off. Adam looked asleep at times (I guess that song can only be played so many times till it becomes a chore to play), but Justin and Danny are pelting it out well.

I dont think i have many more good ones. I have 2 1 minute long snippets of Eulogy and Flood if anyone is interested, but they are far from full length.

Yeah, their tours do seem to be album based all the time. I know songs like 46&2 and Stinkfist always have a high chance of being on their set lists.

And it annoys me even more missing them last time round at London, as their set list then included Ticks And leeches (very rare), 4 Degrees (old classic) and Jerk Off (even older classic)

And the fact it was a 2 night date. Two nights, two varying set lists = Insane amount of Tool :(

But this time, I wont miss it no matter what.

Hey, I am a new Tool fan. I've been digging into the theorys behind Maynard's lyrics, and at first I thought he was completly athiest, but I looked a little deeper and found referances to Kaballa and a few differant lyrics. As far as I know, he hasn't actually commented on his religion, but it's assumed he's an atheist. Obviously his statements regarding organised religion along with his lyrics, and ideology of "think for yourself", kind of contradict a lot of religion, but I think he hasn't formally said. Not that it would necessarily mean much if he had. Welcome to the forums by the way.

To anyone with Tool videos/live stuff, don't let me stop you uploading it. :p

Non-religious and athiest are quite far from one another. Maynard is a very spiritual person, at least that's the message I get from a lot of the lyrics on Lateralus. My guess is that Maynard opposes organized religion because he belives personal beliefs should be just that, personal (hence all the "Think for yourself" references as well as the lyrical themes of Parabola). He might very well be an athiest, though.

Those AiC songs were ok, i dloaded the torrent a while back. I think maynard may have tried to replicate layne a bit too much on them bones.

Yeah, Them Bones did sound like a differnet MJK. But I just love the instrumental parts of that so much.

And as for the constant uploading going on recently (very well recieved in this corner :D ), it turns out that my friend might have all the old tool videos we downloaded 3 years ago. One of them was the Grudge, with some weird interview on stage at the start with a guy who claims to only have 20 minutes left to live. If they are still in the depths of his cpu, I will most certinally get them uploaded.

Didn't want to run the risk of a corrupted zip file, it's happened many times to me before (the zip seems alright to me but no one else can unzip it).

It's just not worth it anyway because the Tool vids don't really save too much space when zipped. Better to play it safe.

Well since you all got cut off at the same time even though you were downloading at different speeds, it's probably safe to say it's a YouSendIt ****up. If you go to the link for the file, there's this thing towards the bottom of the page called YouGetIt that allows for the resuming of interrupted transfers. Try that maybe?

Yeah wait till you see 46&2, the next song. Highly trippy. They've got these awesome psychadelic swirls behind them, and then these completely 3 dimensional orbs (like in the Parabola video) materialise above the stage. It acutally looks like they're hovering above the band. Cool effect.
