instead of jsut going for the whole thrash sound.
"that thrash sound" is what makes Deth my favorite band...

Each to their own. While I enjoy listening to their Thrash era stuff, I much prefer listening to the stuff after it as it what really puts Megadeth ahead as a great band for me.
If they had stuck to their thrash sound then I wouldn't appreciate them nearly as much as I do.

I've really grown to respect what munky says, looks like Cryptic Writings is next on my list :)
Thanks man.

Although it is my favourite album, I do warn you that it is really detached from the convential Megadeth sound which is why so, so many people dislike it. You should definatly give it a listen to though and form your opinion.

Heh, just treat it as a disclaimer. Cryptic Writings has Trust and She-Wolf on it so you should find at least some things to like, although Live Rude Awakening She-Wolf>Recorded version :)
What album is Symphony of Destruction from?
I like that song, well I have a live video of it, (From Woodstcok '99) the guitarist doesn't look like someone Mustaine would let play for him (Reminds me of Incubus' guitarist tbh).
Edit: Didn't realise I also had the video clip on my HDD :D
The little windmill part at about 2:12 rocks, if only it went longer :(:(:(

Symphony of Destruction is from their Seminal "Countdown to Extinction" album. Another very good album, but much more Classic metal than any of the others. It also has great songwriting, but not as great as Cryptic writings IMO.
At '99 I think he would still have had Marty, though I'm not too sure.
Anyway, I'm gonna hit the sack. G'night

Yeah, Marty was their until 1999, so it would have been him. What's up with Martys look anyway? he's got a great Perm!

Nah, I reckon he looks sick.
I just remember reading that Mustaine only wants his band members looking 'metal' and imo , the guitarist (Marty) doesn't look very Metal :D

Marty looked Metal before he cut his hair... :x
By Woodstock, he had already cut his hair a lot shorter than it was (I think it was about as long as Mustaine's was before Marty cut it) and he cut it so that it was slightly lower than his shoulders

Yeah, Marty's old look was pretty awsome. My hair's a bit like that, just brown. To bad he cut it.

I went to that Electric Factory show, it was amazing. And there's no age restriction there. I actually had to go there because the venue in NY had an age restriction. (I'm 15.)

Freezing Moon

I have the Detroit show too. The only thing I don't like about Megadeth live recently, is that Dave's voice seems higher. I used to really like it, but it's just not what I'm used to hearing.
I would still give almost anything to see them live though.

Okay, a rather lengthy tale of my first Megadeth show that I found pretty amusing, and you all might too:
My girlfriend's brother gives us a call and says that he's sitting at the bar with a guy who works for Clear Channel radio. He's apparently got 4 tickets/backstage passes to go see Megadeth in Spokane Washington at a concert venue called the Big Easy. He's trying to get rid of them all for $50 ($12.50 per ticket/backstage pass). So we go down there, meet the guy and check out the tickets. They looked VERY legit, but the guy seemed really weird and sketchy. Well, we figure that at the worst its $12.50, a two-hour drive to the show, and if they do turn out to be fake, we'll just turnaround and go home, no big loss. Well, we get to the show, and sure enough, they're fake. Now, here's where it starts getting good; The folks at the Big Easy decided that they didn't want to put us out since we had driven two hours for the show, so they give us all tickets. At this point my girlfriend's brother is still pretty pissed about getting scammed out of backstage passes. He tracks down some security team leader-guy and tells him the story. So, the guy leads us into a little room in the back of the venue where we all fill out a form describing the guy that sold us the fake tickets/backstag passes and write a little narrative about how it went down, where it took place, etc. etc. Afterwords, he says, "You guys have been very cooperative and this really helps us track down these kind of scam artists. To show our appreciation, here's four backstage passes, enjoy the show."
So, for $12.50 we got to go see Megadeth, watch the show from a VIP booth (thanks to the backstage passes), meet Megadeth after the show and generally have a fantastic evening.
No real point to posting this, just thought you guys might get a kick out of my little tale of my first Megadeth concert.

22. kick the chair
could have added other tracks too, ie. rust in peace/ polaris, 5 magics, arcatecture of aggresion, ashes in your mouth, reckoning day, blackmail the universe. some more songs from cryptic writings could go on it, but i dont think a "best of" cd should have to have a certain amount of songs from each album, imo songs like she wolf, secret place and the disintegrators are up there with the best of the songs from cryptic writings but dont cut it on a megadeth "best of"

Some words on last night
I was 2 rows from the front near the PA right - centre and my ears are still ringing.
Megadeth were incredible!
highlights included the huge sing- alongs that were a tout le monde and sweating bullets, the cheer that greeted the latter was magnificent...
unfortunately there were some feedback problems on Dave's mike which made some lyrics sound odd at the start...
the best songs were sweating bullets, hangar 18, holy wars, tornado of souls, wake up dead, skin o my teeth, the scorpion ...well they were all bloody amazing
in a tiny venue the atmosphere was brilliant and We went away deafened and happy at the electric performance by Dave and the band
Diamond head supported and were fantastic too ...
For a support band to get a sing along is unusual and at least three is wierd, but we all knew the words to am I evil?, it's electric and blown to pieces...
they later joined 'deth onstage for backing vocals in the superb rendition of Back in the day.
all in all that was an incredible gig and long may they continue!

that was odd as much as maiden are my favourite band it seemed a bit strange to me
there was some stuff I didn't recognise like angry again and trust

Polaris would have been great in it's place loved the mechanix and peace sells mix that was brilliant seeing as there was no rattlehead or looking down the cross

Also, refusing to debate the matter hints at immaturity.

Rust in Peace... Holy Wars is the first track on RiP. Lord Abortion, sounds awesome. One thing about when I saw them, with Exodus, it was pretty sick how they sung Back in the Day together, being as how they're both thrash legends. Anyway, sounds like a hell of the show, as always from them.

Nice. Take No Prisoners is a really fun song to play because the riffs are pretty much never repeated throughout the whole song, and the solo is short and sweet.

Well... you might've said the same at Peace Sells, because Holy Wars always follows it. They always save like Sweating Bullets, Symphony, Peace Sells, and Holy Wars for the end. It was cool on this tour how they threw Back in the Day at the End. And then in the beginning you've got the classic Set the World Afire and Wake Up Dead, so its a good mix of old and new.

The Japan release has a different cover and like all Japanese releases there is bonus tracks, which include(1)A Tout Le Monde(2)Symphony of Destruction(demo)(3)Architecture of Agression(demo)(4)New world order(demo)
And yes they are all covers and movie tracks that where previously unreleased.Hope this answers all your ?'s.If you want i can send you cover pics of both.

For a more thrashy album, get KIMB, PSBWB or RiP...for a fast album, TSHF or SFSGSW (IMO)...for a more experimental album, get Youth or Cryptic, and if you want a more rock type album, Risk.
Hidden Treasures is awesome as well...Rude Awakening is good, kind-of like a live best-of, except Dave's voice is messed...it's pretty high on most songs

The System Has Failed is definitely not a "fast" album. Its got some thrashy songs, but most are in the style on Countdown and Youthanasia. I pretty much disagree with you totally here. For thrashy albums... get any of the first four. For some good heavy metal with some thrash elements, get any of the others. And don't get Risk.
And yeah, Dave sings higher live, and sometimes he cracks. I like it though.

For the most part I like Dave's voice, but sometimes live, at least on the recent live bootleg I have, he sings a little too high for my liking. I think a lot of it might be how complex and fast lots of the riffs he is playing are. It's really hard (for me at least) to sing and play at the same time. Especially Megadeth songs.

I think his vocal sound is cool.
Initially I think it's what put me off Megadeth for a while, but I just loved the music I didn't care for his vocals.
Now however, I think his voice is awesome, definately not going to be a duplicate of him :p
I think his voice adds a catchiness to the vocals, I always find myself humming Megadeth lyrics to myself.. Especially "I spread disease like a dog, discharge my payloooooooadd!!"

Peace Sells is a good album, Rust in Peace is their best, Killing is my Business is their thrashiest and also very good, Countdown to Extinction is great, but with less of the emphasis on thrash/speed and more just good heavy metal. I'd recamend those first, if you like those, then check out So Far So Good So What if you like the thrashy ones, and Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, and The System Has Failed if you prefer their more straight metal stuff.

I personally don't like that song that much. Its a good song, but I just prefer the other songs off of TSHF. Good soloing in that song though, not too flashy, but good phrasing and it just clicks with me.
As far as solos/songs I can play, I can do Holy Wars with everything minus the clean solo. Haven't really looked at it, I don't know if its hard or what. I can play about half of the solos in Hangar 18, some of Marty's are insane though. And I can do Tornado of Souls, very fun to play, and a cool little solo. Oh yeah, and Sweating Bullets, easy solo but its a fun one to play with my band.

Even though I haven't actually picked up Cryptic Writings yet, I've heard a bunch of the songs and they really are good. She Wolf is awesome, as is Trust.
Is The World Needs a Hero worth buying? Dread and the Fugitive Mind is a great song, and I like Return to Hangar a lot too.
Those albums seem more underrated to me. CTE is sometimes dismissed because its not a thrash album. I think its great, its still got thrash elements, and some great songwriting.

Blackmail the Universe? Kick the Chair? Back in the Day? Those are my favorites off of TSHF. Also the thrashiest songs off of it. The Scorpion is pretty good too (it was amazing live, not as good on the album), and Truth Be Told is good too.

Maybe. Dave has said he'd like to do more touring in the US, so its up in the air right now. I heard him talk about a tour with Anthrax, Testament, and Exodus. That would be just... incredible.
Last night I had a dream that I met Dave. ****ING ROCK!
So I saw Megadeth two days ago... What can I say, it was awesome!
First, Diamond Head took the stage, with some new (and pretty uninteresting) guy singing. However, hearing "The Prince" and "Am I Evil" plyed live is defenitely a ****ing event to remember. They played for about and hour (maybe a little less), and they were pretty good overall. Not great, but def. better than most (their lead guitarist looked like he was 200 ****ing years old, but that guy good really ****ing play. I met up with him after the show and briefly talked about playing and techniques n' stuff)
Then, after a short break, some roadies came onstage (including quite possibly the fattest man I've ever seen :D) to unwrap the amps and gear, including one of the prettiest, coolest, shiniest drum cages ever built.
And then... Megadeth came onstage! Cheers and roars around the house, and then they kicked in with "Blackmail The Universe", which at the end, as a very pleasent surprise, faded into my favorite Megadeth tune of all time, "Set The World Afire". \m/ :)
About five songs into the set, Dave steps up to the mic, and goes: Three years ago, a doctor said I would never play again. Then he raises his leftie into the air and goes "Whaddya think?!" (More roars and cheers from the crowd, of course :))
They played a pretty **** good set, with only two crap songs, and they even managed to get those to sound ****ing awesome.
Anyways, some highlights:
They start to play "Sweating Bullets", and Dave goes (to the crowd): Sing it! And after about two lines, it all turns into one giant mumbling, cuz nobody knows the lyrics (neither did I, I've always hated that song). And it all dies, and Dave goes: .... Man, that sucks! I'll do it... It was ****ing hilarious :D
James' (Bass player) covering Paganini's 24th (I think) and Bach in his bass solo (which was really cool)
Dave dedicating "Of Mice And Men" to Dimebag, a really beautiful gesture, and also the one time during the night when the crowd chanted something other then "MEGA-DETH" (IE, they chanted DIME-BAG instead :D )
Actually hearing Holy Wars live was also pretty ****ing cool. To bad Shawn ****ed up the solo. He's a good guitars, just really not all that innovative on his own.
They had these smaller speakers along the edge of the stage. And Dave had taped his setlist to the top of one. Then, in the midde of a song, the fat roadie comes out and turns them over (thy were sitting up straight, and heturned them over on their broad side so that the crowd could see more) SO during the next song, you saw this skinny roadie guy running out onstage, quickly taping aanother list on the floor next to Dave, and then very quickly runnig backstage again
It was also very cool when Diamond Head came up onstage in the middle of the show and started to sing along with 'Deth. Of course, nowhere near the ****ing noise that came out when the entire ****ing room was singing along/doing some beer-induced chanting during the chorus to "Peace Sells" :D
In the end, the show was a ****ing blast, and except for the low volume on Dave's mic, the band sounded and played great. The only sad thing was that when the show was over, Dave came back onstage and thanked everybody for coming, and then proceeded to let us know that this is the last Megadeth tour. Kinda sux, but oh well, at least I got a cool shirt with me home :D
