I've been having a lot of trouble getting the second verse to sound good. "Going to war, give 'em hell!" **** man, I just cannot get that for the life of me. I've got the rest of the song pretty good though.
Yeah, that parts a little tricky. Just keep at it though, there's really no secret to that riff.
I have the album I just want him playing it.
Next time I do some recording I'll do Holy Wars and Take No Prisoners. Course I haven't played those songs in months, so it should be interesting :D
I'm Mathias over on the MD boards... not Matthias, one t.
There's a lot of fanboys and idiots over there, but there's a few cool people. Like Pharaoh, Rhoadster, and Jrtruesdale. FaceInTheSky is there as well.

Do you play those songs with alternate picking? That'll be cool to hear those recordings when you do them. I think the smilies they have of the band members are hillarious. Dave (http://forums.megadeth.com/images/smilies/mustaine.gif)

Yeah, I don't play Holy Wars exactly correct either, because I learned it by ear. Back when I could still tab things out by ear... :upset:

Out of curiosity, do you hammer the 2-5 on E, and hammer/pulloff the 2/3/2 on A during that part? That's what I'm having trouble with. I can't get my A on the E string times right when I go back down the riff on that part. I find I can get it a lot better if I pick it all though.

The rhythm guitarist and drummer are COMPLETELY off, drums too slow so it whacks me up so bad plus I mess it up some anyways.
I can't show the whole thing but if someone wants a good laugh I'll give em a clip.

He can't play one single song.

I hate playing with drummers like that. Or when you get together with someone for the first time in awhile and you both just end upp playing random bullshit for awhile. I get frustrated and am like "Dude, what can you play?" where he beats around the bush instead of telling me "Nothing, I'm worthless." Then tells me "Well, why don't you play something you made up so I can make up a drumbeat for it?" God that's the worst. Some drummers are so frustrating.

hey hey relax on the drummer. If you want him to learn it give him the song(s) and a couple days to learn it. If he dont know the song you cant really blame him for it. That's just as bad as you not having any of your own material for him to put drums to.
In my band im dying to play Megadeth, but my guitarist doesnt know too much of them. We've only played symphony and peace sells...which is a joke, and the first 20 seconds of Holy Wars until he ****s up and then im left playing the drums to Holy Wars on my own with no guitar.

I do. He always begs me to come jam with him and every time I go ever there, he hasn't learned anything. I tell him to pick a song and learn a drum part to it since I can play pretty much every Megadeth song's rythm, but he just doesn't practice. It's frustrating.

I know that thrash in general you've gotta scoop the mids out. Dave sound like (if he was using a parametric eq) he'd take his mids to 0, I usually put treble to 6 and the bass is cranked. Those are just my interpretation of the thrash tone, not necessarily Daves'.

Dave uses more mids than you'd think. For TNP, I set my EQ to:
Low: 5
Mid: 6
High: 7
Gain: 7

There is no DV8 with a Floyd. Closest you could come would be a KV2 or a used KV4.
I think you should've gone with the Carvin... because I'm very disappointed with my Spider II. Way too bassy, with any EQ really. Very muddy.

For all you Megadeth fans
I was browsing Amazon Music, I just wanted to see if there was any Megadeth I didn't have (My sister bought me Cryptic Writings tonight, much love :)), I have all Megadeth CDs I want (There are a few like Hidden Treasures and the Best ofs I'm not interested in), anyway, I came across this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000JWS5/qid=1128100544/sr=1-29/ref=sr_1_29/104-6550937-6119904?v=glance&s=music) and was wondering if anyone in here has heard about it, or even heard it? And if so, is it worth the money? It sounds interesting to me, but then again.. I thought St. Anger sounded interesting :upset:

It's like a death metal version of Megadeth, I'll look for it on Ares.
yeah, I read the reviews on Amazon (They were saying how bad Death Metal vocals are :o), and it did sound cool, I've always wondered what Megadeth would sound like with some Death Metal Growls...
I was going to ask my mate's band to cover Holy Wars just so I could hear what it sounded like, but I'm very lazy :p

It's just another way of expression, like rap or emo is to other people.

It has some really interesting guitar in it. I've tried learning Cannibal Corpse's Hammer Smashed Face and Stripped, Raped, and Strangled. They have some great sounding and catchy riffs in them. George Fisher's voice is much like Dave Mustaines in the sense that they are an acquired taste. At first I didn't like either, now after listening to them for a while they both rock.

No, but its pretty low end. Probably not really worth it, depending your reasons for buying it. I'd at least get the KVX10, but your best bet for an affordable V is the DV8-R.

What guitar do you have now? I don't know... its my view that unless you need a guitar immediately, or won't be able to afford a better one for a very long time, then you shouldn't bother getting guitars that aren't going to satisfy you completely. But its your money and your decision, maybe that's all you're looking for. I'm the kind of guy with very specific wants.

rolling finger tips?
MAthiAS
09-30-2005, 11:16 PM
Oh yeah, you pretty much want to make sure you're muting the string immediately after the note is played. Rolling fingers a really hard technique to get down at first, especially over three strings; its considerably easier over two strings. You can also try muting with your picking hand, I do that a lot with three string sweeps in general.
The motion itself is pretty self explanatory. You're just rolling your finger over so that the notes don't ring out, moving it so that one end of the finger is up at a time and then reversing, then back. Its pretty awkward and unnatural having your fingertip off the fretboard and the meat of your finger on, so that's something to remember.
And the same kind of stuff applies as with all sweeping, starting slow and perfecting it and working up to speed. I don't know how you are with the picking technique, but I'd advise getting comfortable with one hand at a time. Since the arp before that one rolling finger one is the same picking motion exactly, its pretty convienient to do.
And I already told you to use your second finger. That's what I find easiest, though it could be different for you, so experiment with your third finger as well. But I have so much trouble rolling my third finger... makes playing Serrana very hard for me :(
I don't know how much of that is actually helpful, but hopefully you can take something from it. :thumb:

I watched an instructional video of his, and he said he didn't use scales, which supirsed me and confused me. What he says he does is he pretty much bases everything around the chord being played. I've tried to do it, but it hasn only worked out for me in pre-planed solos :(.

He makes his own scales by ear.
And following the chords is used religiously in jazz. You just gotta start with slow simple progressions and know the fretboard like the back of your hand.
I can't improv it like that, but I try and do it in my melodies as much as possible.

I hate it when people spell deth wrong.
There was a concert over here, Manchester I think, where the ticket company had printed the name wrong on every ticket. Needless to say Dave was pissed.

Hmm, after reading most of this thread i see that most people hear mostly old stuff (KIMB - RIP) but really i think they upholded their image pretty well as apposed to other bands (metallica :().
I agree that their old stuff is amazing, but CTE,Youth and Cryptic are great albums as well.. (Risk and TWNAH could have been better)
And as far as TSHF... wow some really good material, kicks the ****ing **** out of st.anger...

Yeah you pretty much nailed it there.
They did go away from their Thrash images with CTE and Youthanasia, but they are still quality albums. And obviously Thash > General Metal so yeah everyone prefers early megadeth.

Its all great except Risk, just the thrash is better.
I still hold that Cryptic Writings is their best non-thrash album.

lightningmetal666
10-03-2005, 06:17 PM
There are metallica songs that he really did help write. Ie, Four Horsemen, Ride the Lightning (song), and a bunch of stuff off No Life 'Till Leather.

I never said he didn't write some of them, but some of the songs he says he's wrote (Call of Ktulu) that it can't be proven.

The only song I can think of that Dave has claimed writing, without Metallica acknowledging it themselves is Leper Messiah I believe... Well I think I read on MX somewhere Dave has claimed he helped write it, but I don't know the authenticity of that...

Who cares if Dave wrote it, it's a ****ty song so he might as well let metallica take the blame for writing such a bad song.
Meh, I don't believe we were discussing whether the songs were good though...

Hey guys, I don't really post in here but I love Megadeth :D .
Anyways I looked a few pages back but I didn't see anything relating to this so I'll bring it up here.
What's with the big announcement or whatever Dave has planned for his show in Argentina? The way he's been talking on the Megadeth site it seems as if Megadeth's going to be finished? And it sounds like Mustaine is either gonna go solo or have a new band?
Does anyone have an speculation on what's most likely to happen? I don't want Megadeth to retire, they (even though it's basically Mustaine now) are awesome :(

I dunno, I was just wondering if you guys had any thoughts on this...
I don't think he'll be going completely solo - he'll either have a solo project AND continue megadeth, or just continue megadeth. if he was to announce the end of megadeth, it would be most unwise for him to do so at a MEGADETH CONCERT, dontcha think?
and yes, i realize that megadeth has basically always been a solo project of mustaine, with the switching of lineups and such, i guess a real solo project would just be non-metal stuff that doesn't need the megadeth name on it.
