I think Vol.3 is the best album. Why? It's just a much more altogether balanced effort. If anything I think they have concentrated the sound, not abandoned it.
Well they abandoned the sounds they got out of the first two albums, thats for sure. Vol. 3 was much more laid back than Iowa and less creepy than Slipknot.

Hmm well the profanity isn't there in the new stuff, but it still sounds like Slipknot to me.

Who cares about profanity? I could care less if bands cuss or not. Sometimes if bands cuss too much, it makes them seem rather immature at times.

I dont think the masks really go with the music now though...a guy with a death mask singing to an acoustic song just doesnt feel right

But any of those guys, doing Slipknot, without the masks, wouldn't feel right either.

The fact that the song is acoustic shouldn't change anything. The fact that he's not screaming **** you shouldn't change anything.

Well it featured quite heavily in their previous work, that's all. I'm not bothered either way by it personally but I can understand this fuelling the people who say that they sold out.

All im saying is that i dont like their new direction as much.
I honestly think the vocals are better though...screaming f.uck every other second got stupid after a while...

Well, when I first heard it, I thought it was clean guitar.

But after listening to Paul's bassline from "Confessions" off MFKR, I thought the main line in this song might be bass.

It just...sounds too warm and thick to be guitar to me...but it's not twangy or bassy enough to definetly be bass? I don't know.

Right now I'd say it's bass not guitar, because I've never heard a guitar sound like that, but yet have heard basses come pretty close.

Did anyone see Slipknot play on Conan a few weeks ago? What did you think about the performance? I thought it was pretty decent, considering that I am not a huge fan of "Before I Forget". I thought that it was one of the weaker songs on the album. Sid had a new skull mask, which looked a lot cooler than his other zombie/ghoul mask, IMO. Clown wasnt there, sadly. (I forget the reason why, can someone refresh my memory?). Overall, a good show from a good band.

I respect that, Slipknot has always been my favorite band. When they first came out, They were outrageous with the masks and the jump suites. They blend so many instruments, And its done very well. Like Shawn said in a interview in Welcome to our neighborhood, "its orchestrated madness".

I never used to like them. My friends did, and I always thought it was just a bunch of noise.

Then Volume 3 came out, and I was quite surprised by how it sounded. Heavy, but controlled. It didn't just sound like a bunch of guys playing loudly and screaming meaninglessly.

I've gone backwards through the albums, and I can appreciate their older stuff too, although not every song.

Volume 3 was what turned me on to them.

I respect what you said. Last year I was one of those "hardcore" kids who thought that Volume 3 was a pile of total **** because it wasnt as heavy as their older material. Over time, I have expanded my tastes and have become more adept to differnt genres of music. I know understand why Slipknot changed their sound, because they wanted to sound more mature musically, which they accomplished with flying colors, if you ask me. I guess Volume 3 really isnt as bad as I always act like it is.

Because when I turned it on for the first time, I didn't turn it off.

I try and get into every branch of Rock/Metal that I can, because that way I never get bored of it because I have so much of it. Slipknot is and has been my favorite band for a long long time though. The sound just appealed to me.

Most people grow out of stuff like Slipknot if they go on to other things. I understand that, but I can't see myself doing that. I think if someone "grows out of a band" they can still turn it on and dig it. I listen to so many different things now, but I'm not scared to blast some 'Knot, because I still dig it. I'd rather keep liking something so I can have more music and never get bored.

Plus, they put on a hell of a show!

I think that definetly changed with Volume 3 though...some of the songs might be a little repetitive still, but the songwriting quality definetly went up...songs like Opium of the People, or Welcome or Vermilion, which I consider slightly progressive given the style of music they've been used to making...

Truth.

Before, they might've been uncertain about their future, but after the great success of Volume 3, they'd be stupid to stop now.

I hope they continue working with Rubin though, because I think he brought out alot of really great things in them for this album.

Rubin did a great job on the new album, Ross Robinson was also good.

But I think Robinson's sound was far inferior to Rubin's.

Robinson was about distortion, and volume. Rubin was more about songwriting, IMO. Look at the complexity of the songs on Volume 3. They aren't, like, virtuoso complex or anything, but the multilayered sound actually means something on Volume 3.

The best example IMO is Vermilion. All 9 guys are actually adding to the music, rather than simply adding noise or volume to the music. The long outro is the best example of that...everyone (except maybe Sid) is doing something totally different. The percussion is used, like I think it was meant to be used, with Chris, Shawn, and Joey creating that wall of sound I think Shawn first envisioned. You have Jim and Paul, adding to the rhythm with their unison lines. You have Mick tremolo picking over all of that. You have Craig actually using his freaking keyboard here, adding to the ambience. I don't know what Sid is doing, because the other 7 guys are actually doing stuff...but he could very well be adding to it as well here.

It is this style of music that I think Slipknot was always meant to make, but were simply not allowed to, thanks to Ross.

Pre Volume 3 Slipknot could've been played with 5 guys. Volume 3 Slipknot requires all 9 to function.

Agreed, But do you think if Slipknot started with Rick Rubin in 1999. Would they have sounded more mature like they did on Volume 3?

That's really hard to say.

But imagine if Volume 3 was their first album, and they matured from there on.

I dare say, they could be one of the best around...

I mean, we know they all have more talent than first thought, Volume 3 proves that, and if it doesn't, look back at MFKR if you have to...or even unreleased stuff.

Mick has been seen shredding in that Line 6 video, plus the solo in Vermilion, plus the solo in Welcome (I assume that's him anyway). Talent confirmed.

Jim trades off w/ Mick in Pulse of the Maggots. Not their best solo, but yeah. And he does a solo in Stone Sour, I believe Monolith. Confirmed

Paul, well, look at MFKR. Do Nothing/Bitchslap, and Confessions especially have great basslines. Confirmed.

Joey and Corey have always had it, just some people don't prefer their styles. Confirmed, but to what level depends on what kind of fan you are.

I always thought Chris and Shawn were really pretty worthless, but stuff like The Blister Exists, Vermilion, Before I Forget, and especially The Nameless for Chris show they know how to be really rhythmic and not just bang on stuff.

Sid's always pretty much exhibited talent too, notably on Surfacing and Liberate, as well as Nameless from Volume 3. He's just underused far as I am concerned.

Craig? Well...I don't know how much talent really goes into sampling. But his stuff on Volume 3 is really cool, especially Vermilion for him.

If all this talent had been harnessed the way Rubin did...from the very beginning...I don't think many people would hate them quite like they can be hated now.

Vermilion, is, in my opinion, one of the only, if not the only, song that really showcases each member of the band...

Two different guitar parts, plus a guitar solo.
A steady bassline, with some really cool bass fills
Very solid drumline
VERY good, very rhythmic extra percussion
Good synth usage
Great singing, especially in the chorus.

The huge feel of the outro...just everything is chaotic, but very controlled. It's brilliant, and I love it.

Its my favorite video of their's, even though its very simple. And yes............
THEY TOOK THEIR MASKS OFF!!!
Don't get to mad. Their faces weren't entirely shown at once. Just parts of their mouth or eyes, or somewhere in that area. I wouldn't really call that selling out, but I know many of you will(I really think the masks are stuipid anyway, but they are obliged to keep them on).
Go to www.launch.com, and check out the new video.

It's not selling out. Just goes to show you they'll do what they want, even if it means taking there precious masks off. They'll go from straight up teen angst nu-metal, to mature musicians who can write great metal music if they want, and they'll go from masks on to masks off if they want. Hell, they'll even make a record of random brutalities and sneek a few mutters of "666" in there.

I saw this coming. I'm pleased too.

You know, alot of people talk about how Slipknot 'aren't heavy'...but you gotta realize, you can't compare Slipknot to any of the bands you listed. Slipknot are not death metal, they are just metal.

Compared to said bands, Slipknot isn't heavy. But to say they aren't 'actually heavy' is quite the ignorant thing to say.

I can't stand the music video for that song...its unbelievably annoying, IMO.

I hope he can scream like before.. i''m going to see them the 6th of june
He can't. Haven't you seen any recent footage of them, or even heard their new album? His scream sounds a lot different.

Anyways, I just watched the "Before I Forget" video, and I thought it was pretty cool. I really liked that they played without their masks, but it would have been really cool if you would get to see them at the end. I've already seen what they look like, but having that at the end of the video would have been awesome.

I always use to say that I wanted them to keep the masks on. But that video, wanted me to have them take them off. I no longer care about the masks. I want them to take them off.
And, I hope they mature a lot by the next record. They're getting there, even though I didn't really like Vol.3. They should keep their old-scholl heaviness, but also become more melodic. Add some good guitar solos(no offence, but the ones on their new album were just wankage IMO). Basically, I wish their guitarists would change a lot, but that would screw over everyone else who likes them.

If you ask me, they should take the masks off to show that they are more about the music than the way they look. It just seems annoying now, just like Mudvayne was.

I just want to see Craig's full face, and then I'll be happy

I have pictures of all the rest, so it's not exactly new...but nobody has any full picture of Craig.

I'm actually kind of surprised he allowed himself to be shown, even if only for a second, without his mask on...given his personality (or purported personality, anyway)

He's supposed to be really reclusive, a real enigma...he apparantly leaves shows without hanging around after, he doesn't talk, etc.

If he's such a hermit, I'm surprised he allowed any part of his body other than his hands to be photographed, especially his face.

I know, Craig is so secrative. I really wanna see an interview with him or something.

I can't wait until 'Knot takes off their masks though. It's much more fitting for this music. I have a huge feeling that by the next time they make a record, masks will be off.

I dont think they will ever take the masks off(at least thats what they have said in interviews) and i dont think Craig will ever do an interview or public appearence without a mask or something.

No offense, but try listening to something that is actually heavy. Try Nile, Vader, Amon Amarth, Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, or Cryptopsy.. those ought to do the trick.

poser... just because all those bands are really heavy doesnt mean they are better or more talented dont get me wrong im also into all that Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child Mayhem stuff but to me slipknot is just what got me into metal.

I personally think they would be better suited without the masks now too, but meh. They keep saying they won't do it, that Slipknot will always have the masks...

But what do they do? Go and take the masks off. We might not have fully seen their faces, playing Slipknot music, but they took them off anyway.

Prelude 3.0? How is that even close to being considered their best song? It's probably one of the weakest parts on the entire album, if you ask me. I will agree with you on Purity, though. That is my favorite Slipknot song.

The thing is, its OK to have a metal band with nine members if they all wear masks. With the masks off, it'll look stupid to have so many band members, they should trim down to six anyway

I kinda have a view on Slipknot, i love their music, but they consider the "sampler" to be an important part of the band. the sampler is the guy with the mask with the spikes going through it. What does the sampler do?... press the "play" button to activate the weird noises. Does anyone here think that they should get rid of the sampler and give his job to the DJ, since the DJ dosen't do a whole lot as it is?

The masks are what make them unique as well as the signature sound they have. You can never mistake them for another band. Comparing Mick and James to Hendrix and Page dosent really go together. They arent the same type of guitarists. Mick and James are Shred guitarists and Jimi and Page are Pschyadelic Rock guitarists. Granted Page is a decently fast guitarist and dont get me wrong he is INCREDIBLE, they just cant be compared he dosent really go for speed. As for the 10 years olds, I know MANY MANY MANY older people, more than 10 year olds who like them.
