You could have used a better reason to bump this thread, but sure.
Anyway, who's going to see Slipknot with LoG and Shadows Fall?
I am on March 6th. Should be cool.
Still, though, I really hate Lamb of God.

Slipknot RULES! As a musician, slipknot raises the bar for not only metal but music. I mean, the time signatures and the feeling you get just from the percussion is overwhelming. I think, when you have more than 4 members in a band, and your all really talented musicians and realize to allow the precedence to jump around.... Well who can't just love the f**kin s**t out of it. Long Live Slipknot!!
BTW, I think their first album was the best **** they ever made. So raw, so unedited. No ballads, just METAL!

I would really like to see Slipknot on tour. I've been a fan for a while, and even though I'm partcial to their older material, I enjoy their new cd too. Hopefully I can get some money together to see them.

No offense to all the Slipknot fans here, a couple of years ago I used to love them to death, but looking back at them I realize that they only have a handful of really good songs, a few of the songs here and there are just basic nu-metal, but Mate Feed Kill Repeat owned.... now they've gotten kinda lame.... seriously their set is just huge pentagrams and 666, that's just not cool.

Volume 3 definetly raised the bar as far as mainstream metal goes, but their earlier albums were really just alot of noise.

I do have to agree. Vol 3 done alot for mainstream metal, but that's what I can't stand. Seems like all the good bands, or at least the songs they make for mainstream are lacking. I mean... it's like the feeling is sucked out. I'm not saying their not good songs, or that their not composed correctly or any s**t like that. I just think they don't put what they 'feel' in it. Seems like some big wig producer steps in and hacks at their ****. Slipknot's first album is like so chaotic and blitzkrieg, and, to me, it seems like that's what they was wanting you think about them. They wanted you to associate Slipknot with mayhem. Now... it's like "who can bash their ****in brains out to circle or vermilion." NOT F**KIN ME! This is just my opinion...not trying to bash all the Vol 3 lovers.

Slipknot the show of the century????!@!!!??! LMAO, if you want nu-metal that is good live, go see Linkin Park or Korn live, not Slipknot, they're terrible live. And no band can put on a show like In Flames, and they'll never be close to playing "the show of the century".

That "big wig producer" that stepped in only lend them a studio and made weekly visits to check on their progress.I can assure you that Vol.3 was 100% Slipknot.Rick would give a suggestion, and let Slipknot run with it.Unlike Ross Robinson, who was in the studio with them the whole time "hacking at their ****".Mick had a long guitar solo on (sic) that we will never hear because of Ross.As well as some added technicallity in the songs that was cut out by him also.
It might depending on how much you've actually listened to Vol.3?The first time I listened to it, I thought it sounded unfocused, lackluster, and just thought it was pure rubbish. The more I listened to it the more I saw the big picture.I notice things in it now that I didnt catch before. The emotion for instance. Its like the dynamic of it is hidden subliminally. The only way to unlock it is by giving it repeated listens. One thing that I noticed recently is how well the music is in harmony with Corey's vocals.Vermilion is a good example of this.Listen to how well Corey's vocals feed off the guitar. Its almost like he's controlling the little changes with his words.I dont know, I was high when I noticed it.

The reason behind all the drummers is because the idea behind Slipknot was to have a heavy band with a tribal kind of sound. THey accomplished it. Once you notice it, they sound pretty tribal because of all the drums.

it's just a dumb comment, the way it's phrased is basically LP is too mainstream thoughtless flaming.... especially since Linkin Park is known to be amazing live./
I guess some people just cannot hear music. Slipknot has a very percussive sound. While Joey lays down the beat and crashes the cymbols, etc., the other two precussionists add a very rythmic, lock-step percussive sound, and that's why they're there. On some songs they might not necessarily need that, but it sounds really good when they do.l

Personally, i think all the members are extremely talented. Even though, Chris(3) and Shawn(6) may not be needed on percussion for some songs, they are good backing vocalists live.
The only one i would have to comment on would be Craig(5). I'm pretty sure he does contribute to the songs on the albums, but when you see the Disasterpieces DVD it doesn't look like he does anything. I'm not bashing Slipknot for this reason i'm just saying it would be cooler if you could notice his contributions in concert a lot more

No. I saw them live on the Monday night after the Gold Coast Big Day Out with Hatebreed and Japunga, and it was an all ages gig. it was quite good eh, pretty fuggin' good. shame we had to wait for half an hour cos the fagets at the front wouldn't let 'em fix the broken barrier. Meh, it rocked. So no, there are some all ages happening with them ay.

They don't play any of them, sadly. I wish that they would play "Do Nothing/Bitchslap", that would be great to see live, because then Paul Grey would actually do something interesting for a change.

All it takes to play Joey's stuff is some stamina. I can play most of it. I'm just out of shape and it took me awhile to build up a roll like that. If you can play a semi-long double-bass roll and do quad licks (the root of EVERY fill of Joey's) then you can play almost anything from Slipknot.
As for the drummers of Cradle of Filth and Dimmu I haven't listened enough of either bands to judge them. Especially after hearing lots of Slipknot, just giving a few listens to CoF or Dimmu wouldn't do me enough to compare. I've heard good things though, they're probably great drummers.

Slipknot's previous 2 albums were percussion lead.Vol.3 was vocal lead. His vocals drove that whole album. Its a subdued dynamic in the album that I just noticed a couple months ago even though Ive had the album since May.Listen to the way the music is molded to fit his vocals. The guitars are almost in perfect harmony with his vocals in Vermilion.A few other songs aswell. Its awesome.Without a doubt the best performance of Corey's career.

About Slipknot. I hate their image. Masks are stupid. Their lyrics, for the most part, suck.
I will say, however, that Joey is a class drummer, and their two guitarists know how to shred. I think the idea of have 3 drummers is creative and makes the music a sh!tload heavier.
Slipknot could be a great band if they did the following:
- got rid of the masks
- stopped writing angsty lyrics
- got rid of their dj and keyboardist, and the other dude (I dont even know what he does)... frankly they could go without the extra drummers as well, but i guess they could experiment.
- signed onto an underground label and stopped whoring themselves to MTV.

Well, for one, they have no keyboardist. The guy you don't know who he is is probably Craig. Hes the sampler. Yes, seems pretty pointless, but that's something very debatable. DJ Sid Wilson did amazing work on S/T, he does good stuff.
I have no problem with your post besides you saying you think that having 3 drummers is creative, but then saying they can do without. Seemed a little contradictory, but can go both ways.

I somewhat agree with Panzerfaust, but somewhat don't. I have to give Joey a lot of credit because he is definitely a good drummer. But if you look at all other old bands with good drummers, they only have one. Led Zepplin for example- listen to Moby Dick, it sounds like several sets of drums, but John Bonham was their only drummer. A good drummer doesn't need help. Sure, like he said, it's creative, but they really don't need three drummers. I've heard joey solo before, and he definitely doesn't need any help, but it really doesn't matter. About their guitarists, they need more creativity. Their heavy style matches the band, but you look at some of the greatest metal bands ever (Pantera, Iron Maiden, etc.), they do kick a'ss solos every song, and it only adds to their greatness. If their guitarists were able to make classic solos, they would be the perfect new metal band. Also, about the masks. Who cares?! It's their style. It makes them genuine and original. If they played without their masks, they might as well be "just another metal band" and wouldn't be half as popular as they are now. Personally, I think their masks kick a'ss.

If you ask me, they are kinda stupid. How old are they? And they write lyrics that speak to middle school kids. Well, I think it's kinda hilarious the whole "maggot" and mask thing, like it's a huge joke. I have herd that they're live show is pretty hilarious too. They are touring w/ The Dillinger Escape Plan (an absolutly ball melting band) later this year, so I guess I'll see the humorous quasi-nu metal action for myself. The lyrics on the new album are very good. See "The Virus Of Life" as a very good example.
The term "Maggot" was created by Joey Jordison at their first Ozzfest show. He described what it looked like to see all those fans coming to the stage. It reminded him of maggots.

I started a huge argument about pop-punk music under another name and got banned. Permanantly. And it started with a trite comment like the one that you just posted. If you don't get banned, I suggest that you read the rock/metal rules BEFORE you post again. First off: Craig got a keyboard, and he uses it on Volume 3. He's been listed as "Samples/Media" for the longest time, but now can add "Keyboardist" to his resume. I've seen him play it, and it's very noticable, see "Prelude", "Duality", "Circle", "Vermilion", (1 and 2), and they have piano on a later track too. That's all Craig.
Secondly, has anyone even paid attention to the lyrics of Volume 3? Seriously, the lyrics on Iowa and S/T are utter garbage. The stuff on Volume 3, while not exactly virtuosic, is pretty good. I urge you to check out the lyrics before calling them stupid.
Third, you all want to talk about how stupid the masks are...but I don't see why it's a big deal. It's part of who they are, it's their look. Let them have it, and shut up about it. The only people who should get criticism for masks and matching outfits are any bands who do it after Slipknot has. Leave it alone.

I am not trying to be negative about anything, I said that they have 9 members. It's original. No other band that I can think of has over 6 members. It, like their masks, make them original. Ask someone what band has 9 members and wears masks, they WILL say Slipknot.

Circle is so full of synth it isn't funny.
It opens up with the acoustic guitar, then bass comes in, then you get synth strings that play in unison with the bass, and you've got other sounds...that may be sampled and/or Sid...
But there are definetly instances of keys being played. Go back and listen to it again, it's there
I love the use of it in Vermilion though.

I know joey doesn't need help and that its for heaviness, but I just think they're not entirely necessary, but honestly, how many other bands can say that they have 9 members that actually serve a purpose?
ps- has anyone ever heard of Mayhem? They're psychotic. Literally. Read below.

Yeh i love that telephone sound in the begining, I know thats a sample he loops back and forth. When you listen to it with headphones you notice the background noises. The keyboard use in vermillion is insane, Easily craigs best work in any of there cds. In Iowa i sort of felt bad for him LOL, I could only pick out some parts. But that cd is so drum dominated its not even funny, There isnt anything wrong with that though :thumb:

They all have more talent than they are given credit for.
Craig is probably the only one I can think of who, SEEMINGLY, has the least talent. But I can't say for sure, I mean, I don't know what it takes to do what he does, since I don't do it.
Chris and Shawn are good at what they do, but they seem to want to headbang more than anything. Oh well.
Mick and Jim's riffage is good, and they can solo in spite of not doing it, as shown on the new album, and in the now-infamous Line 6 video of Mick going nuts.
I used to think Paul was worthless till two things happened. One, I listened to MFKR, and realized there were alot of good basslines on there. Someone had told me before that it wasn't Paul, but it was indeed Paul playing those nifty bass licks. And then, I read an interview he did, and he said flat out that he chooses to lay back and provide a solid rhythm foundation, and that he likes more often than not to keep it simple. He said he had a few chances to show off on Volume 3 (most notably, some of his fills in Vermilion) but he felt that the band was not about one person showing off, but rather the band as a whole looking good.
Joey is overrated by idiot fans, and underrated by elitists. The man has a ton of speed, and his parts fit. He's not a god, but he's not a bad drummer either.
I guess I'll just take Remedy's word for it about Sid, I haven't really paid much attention to him. But he seems to know what he's doing, and some of his work on the S/T album was really cool (see: Surfacing)
Corey can sing really decently when he wants to, as shown more often on Volume 3. It usually turns out to be a love-hate relationship with him though, either you love his vocals or hate them. I fall in the middle personally. The man has a good voice, and decent scream, but I can easily think of people better than him...but also, think of people he's better than.
In general, Slipknot gets overrated by their 'maggot' followers, and underrated by guys like Dargon. They are good at what they do, and some members may have more talent than others...but overall, they aren't talentless...but not God-like.

No offence against Joey, he is a good drummer, put personally in the drum solos i listened to it sounded like he was kicking the drum kit accross the stage..... I think he is a good drummer when he wants to be ... if he sorts out the odd time signatures and stops doing offbeat fills then he will do a lot more for the band..... Accually, thinking about it, the only slipknot songs i like are The heratic anthem and Duality, and the drumming in them is awesome....
P.S i am not saying Lars Ulrich is better by all means as a drummer, all i am saying is Lars Ulrich in my opinion does a better drum solo, accually sorry, the solo i have is Lars v's James Hetfield and James does a better solo than lars...!
I personally prefer Metallica's solos, and Niel Pearts, but i think as far as songs go Joey does a better job than lars.....
But saying that i didnt like it when he played that gig for tallica, i think the hi-hat sounded awfull because it had like 4 inches between the bottom and top of it, and i think the fills were quite bad also.... However in all due respect he was using a totally different setup to what he is used to, any gig is better than no gig!

All his fills are quad licks. Almost every single one of them. They are almost always on time. I can see why you didn't like the ones at the Metallica gig though. Very very differen't, and in lots of cases didn't suit the song. Just Joey's style.

Precisely.
The fills in Opium of the People are his most original, and best. In the Spit It Out Hyper Tension remix there's a nice percusion thing going on that's pretty badass. I have no idea who's doing it though. Probably Joey. I don't think Chris or Shawn have access to that stuff.

I think its definently worth getting.Duality and Vermilion wont give you a full representation of it though.Actually, you can listen to 5 songs and you still wont get a full representation of the whole album.Every song on there has its own identity. Each song has something that the others dont. Its all over the place. But if you liked those tracks, Im sure you'd like the rest.Whoever told you someone in the band was retarded was obviously not too fond of the band. Its a lie.Although, Sid is suspected to be a schitzophranic.I read the interview and Im starting to believe it myself.Sid could have been joking about the stuff he was saying.I'll try to find it so I could post it here.
I cant notice any keyboard on circle, But for Duality and Vermillion, Its sounds great.
A grand piano comes in like at 3:20.Its on the right channel. Not to mention all the stuff The Joz pointed out. Before I Forget has piano too.

In Circle:
:54 - Violin starts playing with bass
1:17 - I don't know quite what that sound is, but it could very well be made by Craig
2:00 - Piano
2:27 - Flute-like sound
2:37 - Same sound at 1:17
3:18 - More piano + Flutish stuff every now and then
3:40 - Really weird sounds start. They are probably samples though, not keys.
So, yeah, Craig is doing a whole bunch of stuff.

Is the the cd worth getting? I've heard Duality and Vermilion and they're pretty good.
I've also heard that one person in the band is mentally disabled. Is that true?
Well to answer to answer your question on the cd, If you are familiar with older slipknot stuff like Iowa and S/T. Then Volume 3 is going to blow you away, It did when i first listened to it. To answer about the mentaly disabled member, There isnt anyone in Slipknot thats mentally disabled. Whoever you heard it from must of meant Sid Wilson-#0 The Dj. He said in a interview that his mask usualy gets so tight that he starts to halucinate.

I was totally pissed when I 1st listened to the whole album... I mean, it was "The Knot" doin' acoustic stuff, and I was expecting heavy, rip-someone's-head-off, metal. A lot of Knot fans who I've talked to were disappointed with it too, but we still listened to it more and more, and it just grew on us... now I think it is their best album to date and am glad they went the route that they did.
So yeah... it's worth getting!

Mayhem happens to be one of my favorite bands.
MTV is bull****. They don't have their facts straight about Mayhem and they are off on a lot of things.
my friend says they are a good metal band but I've never heard them. I just know what he told me and what I go from MTV. I don't like MTV either, because I hate the music they play, but I go there for bios.
