Well, I see that Superpeer has started a new version of Forced Listening in R&M, so I figured that we may as well have ours as well.

Admittedly I'm not sure how well exactly this will work, as I know this forum is a fairly small and quiet one, but we shall just have to see.

The original thread from The Pit can be found here - http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92332

The R&M version here - http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211168

The concept of this, for anyone that hasn't come across it before, is that someone will suggest a few songs, the next person will take a dibs on one of them, download it and then review it, not forgetting to suggest a few more songs at the end. If this does work here I think it could be really good, as I know most people here are very open-minded and like listening to new things.

The idea isn't to necessarily suggest your favourite song, but to recommend songs that you don't think other people will have heard, ie it's probably not a good idea to suggest Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah or any Radiohead, as most people on here are very familiar with that.

The reviews don't need to be hugely long, but it's often quite interesting to write them as you're listening to the song, and a rating at the end is usually quite good.

Make sure you give your own suggestions, and sometimes it can be helpful to indicate what to expect next to them. Don't suggest anything you know is impossible to download in a reasonable period of time, and don't give someone a 20 minute epic either.

In the other threads they've had time limits, but I'm not sure how important that will be here, suffice it to say that once you've dibsed something try and get the review done as quickly as possible, if you leave it for more than a couple of hours then it'll be revoked and someone else can take your song.

Right, I think that's everything, I just hope this works as I think that if it does it could be quite a nice thing to have going.

In order to kick this thing off, my suggestions are:

Mercury Rev - The Dark Is Rising (dramatic violins, but otherwise quite a calm track)
Massive Attack - Teardrop (chillout, dance-orientated)
Butthole Surfers - Pepper (amazing alternative track, if you've never heard this I urge you to check it out)

Hopefully not everyone will have heard all of these songs, that's the idea anyway.

This is great, I heard this song on the radio years ago. I enjoyed it very much, but I never knew the name of it, so I could never figure out who wrote it. If I would have know the surfers wrote it, I would have checked them out years ago. That is one example of why you should name a song after one of the lyrics in it.

Anyways, the song starts out with some distorted sound. Then the drums come in with a type of hip-hop beat. The chorus features a distorted guitar, with the lyrics "You never know just how you look through other people's eyes." Then after the chorus a neat guitar solo plays. After the second chours, some weird breakdown takes place, a rahter short one. Then quickly back to the hip-hop drum beat. The singer on this track sings quite powerfully. After the third chorus, a much longer guitar solo is played, not the most technical put it works nicely. Two guitars play in the track I beleive. After the solo, the song ends. Great song. 5/5

Mine:
Eels - It's a Mother****er (short track with just a piano)
Opeth - Leaper Affinity (long track at 9:00, but completely worth it. It isn't just growling, it has some great CLEAN vocals also)
Mercury Rev - The Dark Is Rising (dramatic violins, but otherwise quite a calm track)

I'll take the Eels track, but somebody take the Mercury Rev one seeing as it's now been suggested by two people.

Right, we have pianos and some nice stringed instruments, like it already.

 he's swearing in an emotional voice, hee hee. Ahem, right, maturity. I'm liking the lyrics so far actually, and his voice suits them. Very understated and nice. 'I won't ever be the same...'

Ok, back for another verse now, feel like I want to relisten to the first bit already.

Now stringed interlude - absolutely love the sound they have going.

Oh, it's over, wasn't expecting that.

Yeah, really liked that, shame it's so short but I liked the mood they had going, and Eels just rock anyway.

4/5

Right, I'm gonna put Mercury Rev - The Dark Is Rising forward again
Snow Patrol - Spitting Games (happy indie pop kinda song, British people will already know it but any Americans or whatever might want to have a listen)
Bruce Springsteen - Empty Sky (from his last album The Rising, which was all about 9/11, this is a bit rockier but a really good song)

OrbDragon

Mercury Rev - The Dark Is Rising

It starts with a really arranged intro...almost as bombastic as "Epitaph" by King Crimson. It also has a bit of Flaming Lips-esque style...especially their later music. After the arranged intro, with the string section....a quite piano sequence comes...the vocals start. Very high pitch, clean vocals...after awhile a cellow plays during the verse....and then the arranged part comes back in. The song is mixture of quiet piano based music and bombastic arranged progressive rock. I like the music alot...but the vocals are something I dislike. 8/10

My picks:

Damien Rice - The Professor
Young Gods - Rue De Tempetes

Damien Rice - The Professor

Gently strummed intro with almost spoken vocals.
It has a sort of chilled out quality, just sitting doing nothing feel.
Speeding up. Has got a lot better and more emotional.
Slowed down again, chilled out.
I like the vocals and the lyrics. Its not as good as some of his other stuff but has an uplifting chorus. 2:45, I really like this section. Louder and more emotional.
I like the way it switches between almost spoken and then the chorus, almost shouting vocals. Now he is singing in a different language. That was unexpected.
I prefer the parts where the guitar is louder but if you didn't have the chilled out parts then it wouldnt be quite as uplifting.
Overall 8/10

^You have to wait for Orb to post his review and do the songs he reccomends.

I don't see why. I never understood that rule...if someone has downloaded the song faster than me...I don't see why that person can review the song too. My downloading is going terribly slow right now...I will not hold any grudge if anyone wants to review the song as well. Why should a terribly slow download server stop someone else from wanting to review a song?

I'm not downloading because I want to review...the primary reason is to hear the music :D

Edit: by the way...judging from the display of the mp3's on my soulseek browser...does Vaka happen to be the same song as Untitled #1 off "()"? If so, I'll undib, because I've heard the song already.

Vaka, by Sigur Ros

From start to finish 'Vaka' doesn't really change pace, which is kinda nice. As the song is rather relaxing and mellow. The piano is the main instrument w/ a bass quitly being plucked behind the piano and vocals, rarely will you actually here the bass, but it adds a nice touch. The vocals are amazing on 'Vaka', the singer has a comforting voice with a lull feeling to it. 'Vaka' is a calming song and and is like a lullaby.

I can only speak good words about this song, 10/10.

My Picks:

Beautiful, by Belle and Sebastian
Day Of The Lords, by Joy Division

CarnageFairy
07-29-2004, 07:13 PM
Joy Division - Day Of The Lords

Judging by the title of this song, I was expecting a slow paced song with a dark undertone. And that's actually pretty close to what it is. Starts out with a strong bass line and guitar picking. Then the Joy Division guy starts singing with that patented Joy Division guy sound. It pretty much sets the mood for the whole song, as it really doesn't leave this tone.

The chorus is a bit faster, and comes with a high-pitched organ/keyboard thing. Near the end of the song, it picks up a bit and the guy starts to yell a bit more, and it almost sound like there are other people singing with him.

All in all I found it boring, but it's not bad by any measure.

Rating: 7/10

Ratatat - Seventeen Years

I chose this song cause i likes the bandname.. it's sorta cool.. and i've never heard of them so i thought it would be intresting.. it was very hard to find though but then eventually i found it on their official website..

Back to reviewing the song
This is a very .. i have to say.. weird song... The instruments are high pitched and it's all very intense.. there are no vocals in here... there is not much that i can say.. but it's really weird and experimental.. then suddenly after about 3 minutes the song changes for some time.. it gets mellower and easier to listen to.. i like :) This goes on for the rest of the song really..
I must say i didn't really like the beginning but the end was really cool.. i'd give it a 7/10

Elliott Smith - Say Yes (great song, cool accoustic guitar)
Jamie Cullum - Frontin' (very intresting jay-z cover on piano)
Jeff Buckley - Strange Fruit (A cover of a Billy Holiday song, strong lyrics)
The Sheer - It Only Gets Better (A really cool, really intresting DUTCH band :)

Say Yes, by Elliot Smith

Say Yes is a very catchy tune that catches my ear, I will admit I have a soft spot for acoustic songs and maybe be biased. At certian times in the song, there are mutilple vocals one on top of the other that adds an echo like effect. The guitar is soft in the begining, but picks up volume in no time with soft strumming and stop start sorta effect. Im really digging the vocals and it is the strongest part of 'Say Yes', the lyrics are very quotable and can easily get stuck in your head.

8/10

Brian Eno - St. Elmo's Fire 3:02

ah, didn't realize this was on Another Green World, but I will review it anyways. In relation to the rest of the album this is when things start to get going, it's not my favorite on the album by a highlight nevertheless. The song starts on a nice synth and piano line and the nice vocals of Brian Eno, the back up vocals add a nice touch too. One day I'll have to examine the lyrics because I can never pay attention to them because there are so many other things going that distract. At 1:21 There is a distorted guitar solo folowed accompianed by a flute like synth line that I don't really care for. The Song ends a thirty second fade out.

Ok, it took a while to DL the song. But here we go. I've been meaning to check out The Replacements for some time.

Starts off nice and easy. Guitar and Hi Hat intro, picks up with guitar and drums. In come vocals. Good rythem and beat. Sounds like pop alternative from the early to mid 90's, I'll check later to see when it came out. Pretty catchy tune. I'll give it a 8.5/10. I will definently check out more of their stuff. Very basic, guitar bass and drums. Picks up the pace twords the end with the chorus. Small outro and the song is over.

Come to find out it was from 1984. They were definently pioneers of a genre. I will have to check out more from this band.

Ok, now for my picks:

The Thermals - How We Know
The Helio Sequence - Everyone Knows Everyone
The Justin Riner Project - Stand Aside Shad

The Justin Riner Project - Stand Aside Shad

Starts off with acoustic strumming. Sounds decent not great though. The vocals aren't too sharp. He doesn't sound that good in my opinion. We are trickling through the verse, some better than average lyrics but nothing amazing. The chorus has a girl come in on back up vocals and some kind of string insturment in the back. Sounds decent but not amazing like the rest of the song so far. Back to the verse. The outro really shows how bad his vocals are. It was a decent song though.

The Ashtray Girl
07-30-2004, 06:58 AM
Starts off with quite a weird, distorted noise in the background and some guitar. The singer has a weird voice, but I like it. Can't make out the lyrics all of the time, but they don't seem to make much sense. I like all the instrumental parts I can hear properly, they seem quite complex which is always good.

Ooh, now it's a much heavier bit, drummer is having a lot of fun here. The vocals are surprisingly high, but not in a irritating way. Now it's all stopped apart from some really bizarre noises. Kinda springy.

Ooh, now we have the guitar solo, which doesn't seem to be very hard so far. Could change though. Back to another verse, the vocals are quite a lot clearer now, which is good. Something about a basement, think I've heard that before. Ooh, two voices harmonising now, hurray!

Now more energetic bit again, I'm guessing this is a chorus. ~starts dancing around~ I'm really enjoying this. I see I still have a while to go, I'm intruiged what they're going to do next.

Now it's a bridge or something, which sounds very earnest and emotional. Now some kinda echo effect going on. Now the vocals are kinda distorted and weird. Just guitar with strange background noise again, and now they're building it up to another chorusy thing. Have no clue what the singer's on about, but that doesn't matter.

Ok, ok, let's have something different or just finish the song, they seem to be dragging it out a little.

And lo and behold, there's a kind of alarm sound and other strange things and it appear to be finishing off. Yes, it has.

7/10 - score could go up with repeated listening though

My songs:

Eve 6 - Here's To The Nights (really nice little love song)
Ani DiFranco - Gravel (great lyrics, very heartfelt)

i'm gonna do the Ani DiFranco one cause my sister is totally into all her stuff.. maybe i'll like it too

Ani DiFranco - Gravel
Starts with a cool fast lil accoustic intro.. This goes on for the entire verse and slightly changes in the chorus... the vocals are very appropriate for the song and makes the whole thing complete.. i have to say that it's gets a lil boring cause the guitar barely changes in the song but i must say it's not SO boring that i turn it off.. it's very catchy but i have the feeling that if i listen to this 3 times or more i might get bored with it... But for now.. i like :) 8/10

My songs will be:

Travis - Re-Offender (Really sad song.. cool though) 'not sure what genre'
Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby (Fast, happy, feelgood song) 'indie i think'

The Thrills - Don't Steal Our Sun (Beach Boys Surfer Music Style) 'not sure what genre'

Jerk It Out, by Caesars Palace

Jerk It Out is a song that makes me wanna dance, it has that sorta feel to it. The opening keyboard effect was unexpected, but once I turned down my speakers it was a nice beat, drums follow in quickly after they keyboard with vocals. Im digging the verse it's quite catchy and the guys voice fits the song rather well, but im kinda getting bored with chorus as the chorus doesn't differ from the verse to much. The song keeps the same pattern until 1:37, when the song goes to sorta a drum outro the song kicks back at about 2:05 during this time, I kinda go lost in the song and my attention went else where, it was a cliche drum beat w/ a few dj effects. At 2:05 the song kicks back to the chorus and contiunes the same process as before, until the song starts to fade out with some voices speaking over the music.

Savory - Jawbox

Interesting intro. Some heavy guitar and some bass and drums. Not very catchy but it works. The lyrics come in. He sounds like a cheaper version of Eddie Vedder. Lyrics aren't that good but they fit the grungy type of song that it is. Going through the verse kind of boring. The chorus is way more interesting than the rest of the song. It's really catchy in my opinion and has some great guitar work behind it. Overall this is a decent alternative song but nothing amazing.

I heard this song on the Jade Tree comp., which stands out from the rest. This is the first one I've heard from them(just a month ago), and suddenly i got infatuated with their sound. Intro sounds like your typical alt/pop(guitar and vocals enter, followed by the bass and drums), but as the song progresses, it sounds very dream poppy and sensual*rarr*, along with the lyrics("I'll get you before you get me" i think). They kinda remind me of The Cardigans..hehehe. This one could've been longer and had some more parts...but a great, great song, especially if you're new to them like me. Although i went to their site and found out they already disbanded..darn.

**** typos, I was searching SoulSeek, Kazaa, and Limewire for Two Ton Shoe, when it was actually Two Tone Shoe.

Ok, anyway, on to the review...

When I first started the song, I realized that this is a straight up funk song. Starts out with a classic funk bassline and some distorted guitar. The person singing has a pretty good voice, and it really suits the song. There's backup vocals going ooooooh ahhhhhh which are really cool. Gets old kinda quick, though.

Overall, a decent fun song, just not what I like.

I give it a 6/10.

Dibs on Trophy Scars, I've been meaning to check them out.

Trophy Scares - Sleep Little Nemo -- The Kidnapping.

I liked this song, mainly because I'm into a lot of these type of bands. It probably won't be a favourite for everyone out there. I liked the intro, starts out slow with the twinkly guitars, then hits you hard with the distortion and vocals.

4/5

This band really reminds me of Taken, if you like Trophy Scars you should definately get some songs from them. I'll make them one of my song suggestions.

All Scars - (tk.1) Early Set (Is that the name?)

Cool intro with the feedback. Classic little stick click. Nice catchy part on the off beat. Simple but catchy. Reminds me of a video game. The vocals could be mixed in better. I like the heavier part. Lots of feedback. Cool bass line. I really like how loud the bass is. It adds to the song. I'm coming around on the vocals. They're mixed well for the song. Back to the offbeat thing. It feels kind of empty. The song is pretty repetitive. I've only heard two parts excluding the intro. The feedback heavy and the offbeat thing with it's little video game part. The drums are really dull. Aside from the bass that song basically sucked. It had cool bits (offbeats) but mostly I just wanted to hear something else happen.

Soli i Sombra - The Butcher

I'm intruiged already, very new age-y and echo-y, with slightly etheral singing. Seems to be a really good chillout song. Vocals getting stronger now, goes into the song proper. You could get into quite a nice groove listening to this. Now there's words, which seem a little scary, he's singing about killing and stuff.

Has now gone into a louder section, many voices which I like. Wow she's going high. Sounds a little bit like Amy Lee in a weird way.

Now just the instruments, some strings coming in. More echoes. I'm really liking this. Once again, one of those songs that could use repeated listening - always a good thing. Had enough of this song now though, should definitely end about here. Ooh, it's changed, there's a bit of solo, can't really tell what instrument it is, probably some sort of classical guitar. Ok, all very nice, let's stop now. There's some strange fuzzy sounds and a buzzing thing, weird... kinda like bees. Now some whistling, generally an outdoors kinda sound.

And it's stopped

That was nice, but it did seem to go on a bit, so I'm going to give it a ~drum roll~ 6.5/10

My picks:

The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now (good, slightly edgy indie pop, probably familiar to British MXicans, but worth a listen for anyone else)
india.arie - Video (fiesty, singer/songwritery kinda thing)
Gavin Rossdale - Adrenaline (bit rockier, may not strictly fall into the alt/indie category, but I'm sure we can live with that)

Honestly i've only heard 3 songs from them(the other two are Believe and Paper Bag, in case you're still interested)..but i like 'em a lot even if they're a bit formulaic for most people's taste..i like my songs a bit poppy, hahaha

Hmm, then it must have been a typo a la Limewire.

The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now

OK, so I've heard of the Libertines, but haven't actually heard any songs. Not sure what to expect.

Well, it's pretty repetetive. Just basically the same thing all the way through with a few variations. I don't really like the vocals, they're a bit boring. He's kind of quiet, and I think he's trying to sound edgey or paranoid or something, but I don't think it works.

Um, overall, the song is alright, but a bit underwhelming. Maybe it'd grow on me, but right now I give it:

5/10

Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane

The intro is ok, nothing really special.. The vocals are kinda cool but do get boring kinda quick.. The chorus is.. not so very special either.. Then a woman starts singing and that does make it way cooler.. (the guy was booooring) But still i don't think it makes this song very special.. My bro who is sitting next to me (a more frequent belle and sebastian listener) does like this song so i think if u like the rest of their stuff you'll like this too

The Shins - So Says I

Talk about a 60's throwback, this screams British Invasion short of Vox guitars and Edwardian suits. Unless they've got those, too, in which case they've done their research. It's definitely not a bad thing, though. The vocalist seems to have mastered a style that seems to be teetering on collapse at points, deftly crooning and flying into a falsetto squeals on occasion as well. His energetic style would lead me to believe that they can get the crowd on their feet at a live show. The guitar line flutters by nicely over hard hitting drums and sounds remarkably reminiscent of Dave Davies.

While the lineage is definitely clear, it no way detracts from their sound which seems utterly carefree. It may not reek of originality but it definitely has a unique charm, the kind of charm that drew people to that first wave of British bands in the first place. I had been meaning to check out the Shins a long while ago but never got around to it. If this is evocative of the body of their work, it might be time for me to check them out further in depth.

7/10

My suggestions are:

Yo La Tengo - Nuclear War (Cover of a classic Sun Ra song, here's one version: http://www.epitonic.com/artists/yolatengo.html)

The Olivia Tremor Control - California Demise Pt.3 2:47

I'm a big Olivia Tremor Control fan at the moment and I'm just getting into Black Foliage. I've heard the other Calirornia Demise Parts ont the singles and beyond collection so it sounds familer (rythmn guitar parts) but different (horns, piano, and different tempo). The vocals are very nice as usual and the rare fuzz bass makes the song even more special. At 1:15, it's just quieter and the singer is going "Friends", I should examine the lyrics more. It's back to the main verse with a nice distorted guitar line in the backround and ends on an electric beat that goes into the next song. The piano and horns really make this a great song, this rating as one my favorite OTC songs.

Rockaliser Baby -- Bonzo Dog Band

Starts out with an accordian, so it must be good.
Then the lead singer goes into a sort of showtune type of ditty. Kinda reminds me of Supertramp or Cheap Trick or something. Horn solo is cool, the horns keep squeaking. Then there's a sort of speaking part with what sounds like two different guys.

I think the part where he goes Ahhhh ahhhahahahhhhh is the chorus, if this song even has a chorus. Another speaking part and some jamming on a piano. The lyrics seem pretty good, nothing amazing, but still good. And the music is awesome. Now it sounds like some seagulls are calling.

It picks up at the end and then quickly fades off.

Cool, fun song. 9/10

Elliott Smith- Son Of Sam

the intro begins with some nice acoustic guitar work. and it blends rather well with the piano.this continues throughout the verse.
i think the lyrics are really good and go really well with the song.

about a minute and a half into the song it really starts to pick up with a change of pace with the guitars and most notably the drums. after that for a little while its just the guitar and the piano playing together. then theres some more great singing for a little while and then thats about the end of the song.

overall i like this song alot great guitar work and singing 8.5/10

Silverchair - Israel's Son

Starts out with a pretty funky bass riff. Some guitars come in and a slow riff starts. I kinda like it. The singer comes in and i like the voice.

Chorus; they just change the verse riff up a little.

Another verse. Then the bridge has a squealing guitar solo followed by more vocals and the original bass line. The drums here are pretty cool. They go back into the chorus and then they change it up a little. They introduce a new riff and pick up the tempo a little. "Put your hands in the air" was kind of lame. The next bridge, the singer screams and the tempo picks up again with more yelling accompanying it. More "put your hands in the air." One last scream and it ends.

ehh, it started off alright, got a little repetitive but then picked it back up a little towards the end.

8.5/10

Smashing Pumpkins - Drown

Hmm. Good start with a nice wee guitar riff, Drums and bass join in nicely. Vocals quite quiet, seems like it's building up to a big chorus.

Some lead guitar, nothing fancy. Back to verse with soft vocals. Still feels like it's building up to a big chorus...

Ah here we go. Heavier guitars come in. Vocals still rather quiet. More lead guitar. Okay solo, not much of a melody to it. Drums now. Vocals back again to the verse.

Chorus is upon me for the second time. Very one line then drum fill. Dave Grohl anyone?

Another small guitar solo. This time with wah. Now at 5 minutes of an 8 minute song and there's nothing to make me want to listen again. There's now some sort of screaming guitar noise that if it continues, i'm going to hunt the guy down and bop him on the nose. Less screaming of the guitar, good.

Seems like a very psychadelic song, nothing you could sing along to.

7 minutes gone now, been no vocals for about 2 mins i'd say. Just some guitar pick scratching and the drums/bass.

7:30, same thing.

He's making a very 'whaley' sound with the guitar now, deserves a good bopping.

8:15 and the song is over.

Overall opinion: Started off really well with a nice guitar riff and some meaningful lyrics. Built up well to a semi decent chorus but nothing to make me want to listen to it again. The 3/4 minute long of just instruments was simply horrible. This song will Not be going on my play list.

Oasis - Stay Young

Starts off with a little drum bit and then a very loud staticy riff come in. Liam starts singning and his voice is different from what i heard off his first two albums. I dont really like it; it was better when it was more whiny and brit-like.

He sings for quite some time and finally stops. Theres a little interlude where the riff gets a little louder. The guitar is kind of boring actually. More singing and then a guitar solo comes in. Ehh, there's not that much feeling to it at all. Its pretty quick and predictable. There's more of liam singing and the same riff over and over in the background. The lyrics are pretty typical Oasis lyrics, so i can't really complain about them. After 5 minutes, the song ends.

Pretty disappointing, even for Oasis: 4/10

well it all starts very well with an uncomplicated, catchy paino riff and just gets better when the drums and guitars come in, especially with the addition of a soaring lead guitar part. then it gets a bit quieter for the vocals, which are beautiful- clever lyrics sung in steven wilson's soft british accent. goes noisy again, the chord sequence still being the same- the ony disappointing thing about this song is the fact that the bassline could be more varied and interesting to add an extra dimension to the verses... then a bridgey bit happens, the chord sequence is varied with more amazing lead guitar soaringness. the song reaches it's climax when the original riff comes backand repeats a couple of times. overall, this is a fantastic song and works very well, with variations in the instrumentation making up for the fact that it's actually quite repetitive. 8.5/10.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex 3:41

I have been meaning to check this guys out for the longest longest time. I know that somebody from Neutral Milk Hotel Is Olivia Tremor control (my favorite band at the moment) so i'm expecting something similar. the sound opens on some sort of siren noise and people talking. The starts fully at 15 seconds in, I notice right away that the bass stands out very much, It gives the song a very moving feeling, almost in a traditional way. The horns are very nice as well I didn't expect it either. Not much is changing though but it doesn't feel repetitive, that is very good. A horn Solo starts around 2:35 descending up and down, again I like the horns very much. The song ends on two horns playing by themselves.

ok, the song starts off with a drum beat and and a high-pitched dripping sound (if that makes any sense). Then an electric organ comes in and plays quick notes to the beat of the dripping sound.

The vocals come in. I know that it's french, but it still sounds rather silly.

Ok, now a bassline comes in and it sounds alright, but that organ is getting on my nerves. This interlude thing isn't bad; basically just the same thing over and over again about 8 times. More singing, another little interlude, more singing...i'm sensing a pattern here. Another instrumental, same as the last one. Repeat. Repeat. Another instrumental. done.

Ok, i bought this cd a month or so ago and haven't given it a REALLY good listen through, so, yeah:

Slint - Nosferatu Man

Starts off with a steady, slow drum beat and slow strumming guitars. Random high-pitched noises come in every once in a while. Suddenly the beat picks up and explodes with distortion. The singer yells and it calms down once again. This continues for a little bit until the singer yells again and the distortion comes back in.

The bridge here is somewhat repetitive, but is still catchy. they change the riff up a little and the singer starts to whisper a few times. Its hard to make out what he's saying. Actually, the overall production is kinda bad. A minute or so instumental and then the singer comes back in. The drums sound pretty cool right here, but then suddenly it stops and fades out for the next 30 seconds.

i'd give this an 8.5/10. The guitars have a really cool sound to them and it's necessary to any post rock fan.

Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine

A Pretty intro with bass and delayed guitars. I like this. A sort of rumble is happening in the back which is cool. Very atmospheric. No more rumble. Ah drums. Nice drum part. It all flows together really well. A lot of bass but it works well with this. Nice and clean nice melodies. Back to the intro but more pronounced. There's the rumble! It reminds me of Tool's song Lateralus when the drums come in. Ohhh little drum fill and a cool new guitar part. This feels like music for a movie soundtrack. Here come the drums (Sound like and oncoming train. ch-ch-ch-ch-ch) Octaves going on now. When the tremelo picking starts the drum part changes to somethign very cool. It's all pretty simple but good. And there go the drums again. Everything's fading out but there are like 2 minutes left of the song....is that the rumble I hear? I really like this part. guitars are doubling and the bass drum is going. Drums are back. The guitars have all been really simple thus far. A few more complexities would have been nice but it's not unpleasant by any means. I can feel the song drawing to a close. It's over.

Overall this song was really well done and a pleasure to listen to. I think I'll find me somemore of this.

Ok starts iff with bass and a kinda echo piano. The a melody on some wooden percussive instrument comes in. So far its good. Then some femal voice comes in.
Suddenly drums kick in and takes me by suprise really. At first i thought the song was ruined but then im liking it now.
Two minutes in and some more instrumetation layers come in and its sounding good, a little dischordant and hazy in a way. Its fading out in a strange way. Kinda stops but then it starts again quietly, its feeling good. The NIN stuff ive heard is balls compared to this.
Its kinda just drifitng and it ends, its a very crud review but i was just chilling to most of the song.

Camel - Unevensong

Camel is an unknown progressive rock band of the 70's. I never really listened to them until now, though I have heard of them.

I really like the pyschadelic music in this song. You can tell that the members can really play their instruments as the bassline featured in the song is drilled into your brain from the start. The vocals at the begining are pretty weak, but the bass and guitar make up for it. The drums are pretty quiet through out the song. The sound of the song as a whole through the first three minutes puts me in a dream state, it's not like anything I have really experienced before. Eventually the song slows down halfway through, it's a good breakdown because the singing becomes lovely and absolutely beautiful for the first time. At around the 4 minute mark you hear the instruments get louder, and the rest of the song is a wonderful instrumental. Great start, great breakdown, great ending. Great song.

5/5 Thanks Modrock

Nirvana - "Hairspray Queen"

Just bass guitar, then drums enter. A couple repititions and now a guitar comes in. Different from the normal stuff I have heard of Nirvana.

Oh crap, the vocals that is. Woah. These vocals are nasty. I can't make out what they say, but they are annoying. Sad because the rest of the song is really catchy.

When it's just the instruments it is pretty good. Now another vocalist comes in and he is much better. I'm sorry, I just can't stand the other vocals. I don't know how anyone could.

There is a second shorter instrumental part, then some mumbled vocals. Now back to the other vocalist (the decent one). I haven't been able to make out a single word so far. Now there is a sloppy guitar part and some grunting, and the song fades out.

I'm really sorry, but I didn't like it.

the songs starts off with just with just some keyboards in the beginning. then some drums come in that kinda sound like they would be on a hip hop song but it goes with it nicely. then some thing else comes i cant really tell what kind of instrument it is but anyways it comes in. followed by some horns for a few seconds.

i really enjoy the vocals on here. ive never heard anything from the cure but this guys voice is really good i must say.

about 3 minutes into the song just a fabulous horn solo comes in and wow its amazing how many different things are incorporated into this song. but besides the horn solo everything just kinda is repetitve throughout the song.

Jeff Healy Band - Angel Eyes

Starts with a nice wee arpeggio'd intro. I like this guy's voice alot, Jeff Healy one presumes?

When the drum fill comes in this song becomes really good. Back to the verse with guitar lead parts inbetween lines. Drum fill comes in for the chorus again. 2 mins in and it's not really changed much, although it's good how it is.

Lyrics are of a typical love song "what did i do to turn your angel eyes my way". Back to the ol' verse again. Now there's a lovely wee guitar solo at about 2:50, lovely tone on he guitar. Back to the chorus, it's beginning to grow on me now. The guitar in the backround compliments his voice really well. Mostly the same stuff now, a couple of lines then a wee guitar part, although that's not a complaint. Guitar lead until the song fades away, very pink floyd-esque.

Overall it's a nice love song but would wear thin after 10 listens. 7.5/10

Oasis - Talk Tonight

Starts with acoustic guitar, clapping to keep beat, no drums. In comes the vocals, simple lyrics which I like. His voice is heavy but very smooth. Talented singer. Sounds like there might be a stringed instrument in the back ground, maybe a bass or something. Very simple chorus. "i wanna talk tonight, until the morning light, about how you saved my life". A very simple relaxing song. The only other Oasis song I've heard before was Wonderwall and this song is just as good, or better depending on what type of mood your in. I've heard about all the controversy between the members of Oasis and I think its too bad, they are great musicians. I will definently be looking into Oasis a little deeper. I give it 9/10... no 9.5/10, but this song is definently one for a relaxing mood, if I was hyper and in a party type mood I'd be pissed off by this song, but I'm tired and this song hits the spot.

The Thermals - How We Know

As soon as the bass starts, it's immediately catchy. The guys voice is different, but the lyrics seem rather elimentary. Still a very simple but **** catchy bassline. Good chorus, nice noises/feedback just before 2nd verse. The guy's voice and the repetitive lyrics are geting a little annoying, but I can handle it. I really like the chorus, only 3 chords but still cool.

All in all a nice song. Simple, catchy and not too challenging. Nothing original or amazing, but decent.

So Mclusky-lightsabre cocksucker balls whatever. A band which i have heard a lot about but not actually hear any of their recordings.

Starts with hi-hat. Guitar plays quick chords and just vocals and drums in between these guitars...and now everything comes in and its quite rocking. Im not all that convinced by the lyrics and the vocals 'im fearfull of flying and flying is fearfull of me'? Hmmm.
Tight musicianship..bam bam bam bam bam beat then the same bit plays a again with a bam bam bam bam bam bam...speeds up now and it ends..wow that was very short.

Ryan Adams - Shadowlands

OK I've heard of this dude, but this is the first song of his that I've actually listened to...

This is nice. Very bare and lonely sounding. Nice lyrics, nice singing. Ok we're about 2:30 minutes in, and those 3 piano notes are getting a bit repetetive. Hey good, just as I typed that, in comes the guitar and the violin and stuff. And then it's instrumental until the end of the song.

This song really reminds me of "Here comes the flood" by Peter Gabriel. And that's a good thing.

So yeah this is a pretty good song. I'm probably gonna check out some more of his songs now.

I give it a magical 8/10. That's right, magical.

The Replacements are the only band I haven't heard on that list, you have good taste. It's also nice to see another Gang of Four fan here, okay, i'll get ot the review. The songs starts on what sounds like a 12 sting guitar, the pattern is fairly simple nothing special. At 35 seconds in the Drums come in, it's a nice release. The vocals are good, I like how he streches notes out for long screams. Now there's some slide guitar in the backround, I thought The Replacements were a punk band. The bridge reminds me of a different song that I can't remeber right now (It's has to do with the type of strummning of the chords). At this point the vocals is what is keeping this song interesting, this is very rare for me. The song then ends on a 30 second fade out.

Fugazi-Waiting room
A song which i have not heard from fugazi, even though 'argument' is one of my favourite albums ever!

Stars off with pretty nifty bassline, drums come in and change the tempo a little. Guitar comes in, and it stops...and nothing happens..oh yes.
Verse starts and that unmistakable fugazi vocal comes in, and this is good so far...its quite groovy in a sense and the vocals are almost poppy.
And then the chorus comes in and..is quite short but sweet.
Drums stop, few fills with dischord guitar and straight into that verse riff again. The backing vocals are great. Chorus again...and an instrumental chorus. And its carrying on witht he dynamic change's.
I assume this is the outro, and yes it is because its stopped.

Pretty good, may grow on me 7.5/10

Air - alone in kyoto
i never really listened to air that much so this should be interesting.

the song starts out with a lone booping sound and then is accompanied by acoustic guitar. Some electric organ noise are heard to. The guitar changes its chords up along with everything else. The music seems to be moving back and forth now. I hear piano! Now the guitar is back to its original riff. The booping sound is still there.

No vocals yet; this just continues for a little while longer until it goes back to what i guess would be the chorus. This sounds really good. I'm liking it. Slow, and has a nice beat to it.

The music stopped and now there's just a single piano which is soon joined by strums from an acoustic guitar. There are sounds of waves in the background hitting shore. And the song ends here.

I really liked it. Maybe I'll check out some more Air :thumb: 9/10

Porcupine Tree - Hello

Starts off with a piano, John Lennon like. Lyrics are quite depressing. The drums kick in and i presume this is the chorus starts with "Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello", sounds as if it'd be repetative but it's actually quite good. Back to the verse with piano, vocal and drums. I actually quite like this song, even though it reminds me of Radiohead and i dislike radiohead. It is a depressing song yeah, but it's just chillout, nothing too loud. A guitar solo is upon me and it fits in perfectly with a very Steve Vai tone. Guitar solo is over, oh, and so is the song. I feel like I wanted it to go on for longer than that but it was a good song overall. 8/10.

Oasis

Sounds like an acoustic guitar, and now it is joined by a piano and violins. Now drums and vocals come in.

This is definately Oasis. He's "freeeeeeeeeeeeee". I like this song so far. It is about a minute in. The second verse is similar structure-wise to the first. The chorus doesn't really have a hook, but is nice nonetheless.

About 2 minutes in and there is a instrumental part for about 15 seconds. Now some lo-fi vocals come and the song begins to take on a different feel.

It calms down again around 2:45 and it goes back to the structure from the beginning. This is a nice song so far. Now a different version of the chorus with the "whatever you say I know it's alright" part.

About 3:40 into the song and there is a nice guitar solo. Now it is joined by the violin. About 4:30 in and some clapping joins the instrumental part. Still no return of the vocals.

The song seems to be coming back down now. The violins take center stage here for about a minute. And well I guess this is live because now there is cheering and that's it.

8.5/10 I liked it.

moonbabies-happy when smile

in the beginning of the song some drums start off the song. it is a really nice way to start off a song and it is some pretty nice drum work by the way. a few seconds later the guitar and vocals join in while the drums still continue. the guitar is rather simplistic but it works real well.

then there is a little break where the drums continure but the rest of the band stops for a little bit of keyboard action. this happens a few times actually throughout the song. it starts to happen more often later on in the song.

about two minutes into the song everything changes. it sounds like something breaks. and there is always this little noise i cant really tell what it is. and the whole band seems to switch their sound for a minute.

about 3 minutes you can hear wolves howling it sounds like. and a great bass line. then there comes in what sounds kind of like a middle eastern style guitar work. the vocals here are really different from the rest of the song they seem to echo more (if that makes any sense).

overall i thought the song was pretty good the only thing i didnt really like was the fact that the vocals throughout the song seemed to be rather repitive.

Velvet Underground - I'm waiting for the man

i've heard some velvet underground before, but not that much.

starts off with a steady drumbeat and what sounds like a piano accompanying the drumming. guitar comes in and it all comes together. pretty simple beat. The singer starts singing; his voice isnt that bad, but i still cant really tell what he's singing about, plus, the reason why im not a huge fan of this, or most punk for that matter, is the singing. He's not really singing, its more like talking. The beat or anything hasnt changed yet and its more than halfway through.

Singer sings some more. I get a little more tired. Oh oh, i can hear a little riff in there. Now the piano is hammering out some more noise than before. Oh, the song's over. Ok.

Not my cup o' tea at all, i'm sorry. It just didnt feel like it had much substance to it.

Dishwalla - Charlie Brown's Parents 5:17

This song sounds strangly familier, I'm sure there's another song just like this, ah I just got it. This song sounds like Radiohead's Creep, I'm expectimg a distorted riff soon. I was right but seriously this riff is really cool. The stacato ska riffs after is also quite enjoyable as well. That type of distortion and high register playing is defintley one of my favorite things to hear in a song like this. The vocals are okay, I get the whole I'm talking to Charlie Brown's parents line (insert trumpet playing here). I don't really dig the rest of the song I think it has bored me, the singing and guitar is very cliche at the moment like something I would here on the radio. Overall the song started interesting and became boring, it should have been shorter

Ive got a live version of the XTC song, i hope they are good live:evil:

*Crowd cheers*

Drum beat starts with bass line joining, and now theres a guitar(s). Its very 'kick out the jams' so far.
Vocals arent bad and the musicianship so far is pretty tight. Not too sure about that chorus, it had a very early rock progression to it....and the vocalist is losing it slightly, but he sounds like he's putting some energy into it.
Chorus again now 'what do you say..'

Cool guitar solo, very reverby...this is the best part of the song...and back into the chorus again, its getting better. On disk i can see me digging this a little more, but its just not hitting me the way it should.

A kinda interlude now, which sounds good and into the chorus again. Kudos to the harmonies because they sound **** hot for a live band.

Nice outro there too, they are very tight, but the music did not grasp me really.

Hope of the States - the red the white the blue

This is exciting, I have been wanting to hear these guys for a while.

Starts with fast acoustic guitar and the singing comes in almost straight away. I really like his vocal style. The rhythm of the vocals is cool. I'm really digging the lyrics too. Seems to be about following everything your country does or something.

A piano break just before the chorus is very cool, a falling down effect. "The red white and the blue has always been what led you. if you don't do something they'll steal it all from under you" is a great chorus.

Back to beginning for verse 2 pretty much, then the same thing for chorus 2. I was just going to say it was simply structured, but the chorus just took off and is left with an acoustic playing something reminiscent of running, or charging, accompanied by an incredibly rad string arrangement. I really love this bit.

Back to chorus, well transitioned. song fades out with a whole load of feedback.

I really loved that. I must hear more by these guys. 8.6/10

Stars off instantly with acoustic and vocals. He has a very smooth and good voice. The acoustic guitar is nicely played, his voice being the centre of the attention. Cool soundign accordion coming in now adding a little more septh to the song.
Cool chorus, back into that minmal verse again. So im paying more attention to the lyrics now and they are sweet, but nothing too awesome.
I like the slight change in dynamics leading into the chorus. I can tell this is going to grow on me. Cool instrumental now, its like a solo in a way and...it all stops suddenly and back into that verse and vocal bit. That was tight!
Im pretty sure this is a quiet version of the chorus...oh the other layers of instrumentation are coming in, chorus again which i assume is the last time...and yes, it ends.

It was very good, nothing groundbreaking but i will be interested in checking some more stuff out.

Ok, I actually found a copy of "hour of the bewilderbeast" that I didn't know I had. I used to listen to the About a Boy soundtrack a lot, so this should be cool. I don't think I even ever listened to this album.

Starts off with strings, and in comes a french horn or something. Very very nice intro. Acoustic guitar shows signs of appearing, and everything stops. Acoustic by itself now. Singing comes in, beautiful lyrics. He's singing with the rhythm of the picked out notes, and it works smashingly.

Brass instrument comes back in with the strings. He sings "put a little bit of sunshine in your life", and the song turns much brighter and happier. Really good chorus sounding bit, and then an instrumental break.

Back to verse, but different slightly. His vocals are incredibly warming. Very awesome instrumental bit, with piano coming in, and back to the chorus. And then it stops.

The vocals fit the lyrics and the music very well, and I have to say I'm in love with Badly Drawn Boy again. 9/10

Starts out with some synth and then some synth-sounding drums come in and along with singing. They add some effects to the voice; pretty cool. Now the beat becomes more "poppy," but it doesnt sound bad.

A few verses of this (or one; i cant tell), then the chorus busts out with a very upbeat sound to it. It kinda reminds me of what Oasis' old stuff sounded like...until this part comes in. Very high voices saying "bop-bop-bop-bop" or something to that nature. The singer adds a little variation to it.

The music starts slowing down it all fades away. Hmm, kinda short, but overall a decent song with a nice upbeat feel to it. 8/10

Godspeed You Black Emperor - A Silver Mount Zion 6:21

This is crazy, I was certain that this was a metal band. The words Godspeed and Black made this seem like a some gothic thrash band from Norway. Instead I got something complety different. The song opens on a piano then a long silence, this is quite ackward and uncomfortable, good thing these aren't tension chords. Right now I am really put off by the silences and the long length of theis song but I have patience. Things are starting to pick up and get lounder, it is around two minutes and thirty seconds in. You said something about beatiful lyrics I don't hear anything yet, unless I'm supposed to be able to understand the static sounds. I guess the overall effect of the song is working I am becoming somewhat scarerd and sad. No I'm not crying to cry, actually the thought of that makes me laugh. Wire -- The 15th

Starts out with a nifty little riff. Singing starts pretty fast. The guy has a pretty subdued voice, with what sounds like a british accent. The chorus has some cool synth/horn/whatever work. It's a little louder than the verse and it's pretty catchy.

I like the guy's voice, but the lyrics don't seem too groundbreaking.
Here comes a solo, with some more synth/organ action. Kinda reminds me of The Pixies, but a more "normal" version of the Pixies. Maybe if Coldplay or Snow Patrol and The Pixies had a baby.

I'm not sure if the marriage would last, though.

Overall -- 7/10 Pretty good, but it might not stand up to repeated listens.

Moonbabies - Over My Head - 3:47

Starts off with a piano melody, quiet at first but gaining in confidence. I can hear crackling in the background, but I don't know whether that's part of the song, or something to do with the quality of the file I have. Vocals come in just before 1:00.

I like them. Has a slight accent (which I can't place, but accent should be enough), and a slight distortion effect. The first two lines are sung low, and then the next two high, with occasional quiet, breathy background vocals. I'm pretty sure they're all coming from the same person, though I could be wrong.

Other instruments come in occasionally - sometimes higher keys on the piano, sometimes what might be quiet guitar, or could be distorted piano, or even a harpsichord or other keyboard instrument.

Vocals finish around 3:00, allowing for a little bit of variation on the main piano melody, and then the music fades out for the song to end on gentle distortion noise. I guess the crackling was meant to be there.

8/10, I'm a sucker for piano.

Would I listen to more of the same band? Yes, unless this is their only piano-based song.

The Beta Band - Dry The Rain 6:05

Based on the name, I'm not sure what to expect and I'm not too familier with Indie Folk, so this is going ot be something new for me. The songs starts on an electric drum beat and acoustic guitar. I hear a slide guitar in the backround, thats and instrument I could never really like but it sounds okay so far. The vocals are nice, I like how he has a very clear voice and holds pitches for just the right amount of time. At around two minutes things start to pick and get more funky. I'm nodding my head from side to side which is something I rarely do. God, What is the percusion sound I've heard that before but I'm not sure what it is, it's the coolest sound. That and the horn section that follows makes this song really interesting. At this point the first two minutes were defintley worth it in building that great tension now being released what I'm going to refer as the shangri-la moment. I'm dissapointed the song ended on a fade out I was hoping it would go into a new part or possibly back to the verse. That and the country feel are the only bad things I have to say about this song. I'm goign to have that horn part in my head for the rest of the day.

My Score: 8.5/10 I'm liking this Indie Folk music

Wanted to kno if they are really that great

It's a very short song.. not even 2:30 .. but lets listen to it before judging it :)
Starts of with some guitar and drum -- the guitar falls away quite soon and leaves a very nice bassline... really cool there.. then guitars come back in.. getting a little boring but still really cool... i'm waiting for my vocals but i'm afraid they might not come.......... The guitars keep playing really catchy little stuff.. and i'm pretty sure that there is a 2nd guitar too... they play quite wel together... then at 1:50 the instrumental song takes a little change to a different sounds for 20 seconds or so.. that was really cool but i would have liked some vocals

6/10 not bad, i just dont like the instrumental songs

My Picks:

The Strokes - The End Has No End << The Strokes .. Love em Or Hate em
The Cure - The Lovecats << you all probably know this already.. Cool though!

Counting Crows- Mr Jones

This is the very first Counting Crows song I've heard. Reminds me of a little bit of Bob Dylan playing live; and a little bit of Matchbox twenty (but, better). It starts with a guitar riff and singing over it, then the band enters. The song goes with the same riff it started throughout the whole song. Which leaves time to concentrate on the lyrics. I like the vocals... and the lyrics are really clever. The song itself has a pretty uplifting mood. In the middle, there is a short breakdown where the songs becomes bittersweet. Then goes back to the riff again.

The music is really simplistic; not really my style, but this time, it is pretty accurate to have a simple music, because its the vocals that carry the whole song. There are some backing vocals which fit perfectly.

Sweet song; liked it. The bad thing about it is, it lacks melody in my opinion, and nothing too surprising. 6.5/10

I'm a confirmed Bjork fan, though not the biggest in the world, but despite Orb's endorsement, I haven't yet heard anything by the Sugarcubes.
The Sugarcubes - Birthday - 3:58

Starts off low, almost bluesy, with a higher pitched sound coming across the top - it sounds like the sound made when you purse your lips and blow next to plastic bad, or cellophane. I've no idea what's making that noise, it's kind of annoying though. Anyway, so far (0:20) it's pretty dark for a pop song.

Some tinkly bells introduce Bjork's vocals, along with some percussion. The percussion is nice; irregular, but not off-beat, I like it. Bjork's voice is typically ranging from high-pitched to low, almost growled, parts, in her own, uneasy sounding way. An echo effect on her vocals, as well.

The rest of the song carries on in much the same way; being a pop track, there's not much variation beyond the vocals. And it ends with Bjork giving us some non-lyrical "dum dum, da-dum dum"s.

6.5/10, I think, and that mostly for Bjork's vocals.

Would I listen to more of the same band? I'm not sure, to be honest.

Cirlce Takes The Square - Interview At The Ruins

Starts off with some nice guitar, but with some strange noises as well that could be various things. All sounds a little weird, so I'm looking forward to this. Gets going a little more now, so far so good.

Singing starts and, my god, I was not expecting that. Very screamy and it gave me a start. Then some muttering and some computer talking. It carries on whilst the guitar riff comes back. Now a few voices singing, but I'm not really enjoying the vocal line on this at all.

Am doing my duty on this thread and listening to it the whole way through, but I can't say I'll be listening to it again.

There's some acapello singing now and then it stops.

4/10 - really didn't enjoy most of that, but the guitar was good.

My friend was just telling me about this song the other day. He made it sound pretty good but I hadn't checked it out yet, so here is the perfect opprotunity.

Starts off with guitar, bass, drums intro. In comes vocals. He's got a 'pretty' voice. A quick verse, then right to the chorus. Up beat poppy chorus. Doesn't last long, into the next verse. Then right back to the chorus. Very catchy tune so far. Kind of stupid lyrics in my opinon. Not really deep meaningful song. Now into the rockin bridge. Slow it down... and back to the chorus. Reminds me of Simple Plan/Mest except if they played 90's pop rock like Vertical Horizon or Nine Days. Very catchy though, I could imagine them being on TRL or something with girls screaming their name. Not a CD I would buy though. I'm going to give it a 6/10 stars. Now I'm going to go kick my friend in the groin and give some new CDs.

I've tried to listen to these guys before but I got bored of them, so here is my second try. Opens exactly as a thought it would, an acoustic guitar pattern. This type of playing is very similar to Nick Drake. The vocals are okay, I wish they would stand out more, instead they make me zone out, especially when the female back up vocals come in (I guess this is a good thing depending on your mood). This song is very short which is good, I would get very tired off that guitar if it was around any longer. I don't really understand why these guys get such good reviews but I guess it's just my taste.

Haven't heard of this band before, but I generally don't like post-punk, so I'm wary.
Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex - 3:41

Starts out with a loud, electronic noise, which I wasn't expecting. It goes away pretty quickly though, and a guy clears his throat, says "huh?"; there's some radio chatter for a few seconds, then a drumstick 1-2-3-4 intro, and the music starts.

Vocals come in straight away, a fairly regular voice, but he's got a good idea of rhythm for his lyrics. Seems to be telling a story of himself being seduced by another man..I think. The music is pretty upbeat, nothing interesting happening yet, but it is only the start of the song.

We get a tuba, I think, after the first verse, at about 1:15. After that, we go back to the fairly regular, but rhythmically adept, voice. That tuba (or whatever it is) is still playing behind his voice.

One thing that annoys me is that at the end of each verse, his voice goes higher, and (deliberately, I think) out of tune, which sounds terrible.

And the song just goes out like that; the instruments hardly vary throughout, just clattering along. What they were doing wasn't unpleasant, but some variation would have been nice.

6/10, mainly for the way in which the guy managed the vocals, which was pretty quick and smooth.

Would I listen to more of the same band? Probably not.

The Beta Band - "Dry the Rain"

Starts off with cool mellow drumming. Now acoustic guitars join. Vocals come in and are pretty mellow. This is a good chill song so far.

The guitars on the chorus beautifully accompany the vocals. Well harmonized. This is almost like a mix of indy and alt/country. I am liking it. The second verse is similar to the first, and the chorus comes in again "Take me in and dry the rain".

Just after the 2 minute mark there is a little instrumental part and the chorus comes in again. The song is starting to build up a little more at this part it sounds like.

Another instrumental part, same drumming, nice bass line, and simple guitar chords, but it all comes together nicely. At the 3:45 mark a new instrument comes in, sounds like it could be some kind of a horn.

New vocals just join in at the 4:10 mark this is definately the highlight of the song. The "I will be alright" part that is. I really like the bassline on this part, and the vocals are spectacular.

The same line is repeated several times near the end and it continues as it fades out. Great song, I hadn't heard it in a while.

Starts off with some random talking, probably just the download. Blah blah blah. A bit of piano, c'mon c'mon, stupid download programmes.

Right, after only a minute or so it gets going. Still not convinced this is the right song, but I'll review it as if it is.

He has a very weird voice, very deep and kinda strained sounding, not that great. Like the piano though. Lyrics seem nice, but he doesn't seem to be able to inject any real feeling into what he's singing. Oof, it's really not very enjoyable to listen to his voice, argh. Much sameness, then some clapping and it's finished.

Shouldn't think I'll ever listen to that again - 4/10

Portishead - Glory Box

This song starts off softly and gets a little louder, just bass, drums, and violins. its a really chill beat, very relaxing. Her voice becomes stronger and more clear with the guitars more into the song, and the chorus is really great. 'Give me a reason to love you', I love really relaxed repetative kind of songs. Then it gets heavier about right at the end, with her voice louder w/ delay, electronic drums, and then effectively fades (lasts about 10-12 seconds I'd say) leaving you feeling a little deprived, i think that was the intent, but still very relaxed and pleasant. the song then fades out.

I have heard some other songs by this band and realy liked them, The Reclusive is just beatiful. Hopefully this will be something like that song. This songs starts on a hi hat rythmn, reminds me of The Fall song C.R.E.E.P. Next the guitars comes in with a distorted and some pinch haromnics (not sure if that is right). The bass comes in establises a tight groove. I like the vocals, they have a screamo sound to them. At 1:45 there is a quiet part, the drums around here is nice (very dynamic). This band keeps reminding me more and more of Fugazi, who always do cool little things like what's happening at 2:40. Things like those always keep me interested and usually takes a few listens to get the whole song. One more verse and the song is done.

Gone Daddy Gone.

Sounds like guitar and xylophone. "Beautiful girl, love your dress" vocals come in. Straightforward verse and quickly into a chorus of "Gone daddy gone".

Another quick verse and the chorus is upon me again. Ha, a nice xylophone solo. Awesome. The guitar riff is the exact same all the way through.

Now a short drum solo and the xylophone again. Like they are dueling. 2 minutes in and another verse comes in.

Background vocals now, I don't remember them the first couple times. Now another verse while the background singers sing the chorus and now he joins them again and the xylophone takes over for a second and they sing a couple more "gone away's" and the xylophone takes the song out.

Fairly short song. I liked it for what it was, not really my style, but good nonetheless.

Beginning starts with just an acoustic guitar and vocals (very Nick Drake). The singing is good, it's sometimes a bit ackward like he's trying to force this sad mood, which just ends up being overally dramatic. Sometimes, I get reminded of the acoustic songs you find in the audio arena while listening to this. For the most part I don't like acoustic songs, I always get bored of them. A pounding Hook bassline intro for 20 seconds then drums join. Around 30 seconds in a distorted guitar does a quick riff and then goes silent.

Now a guitar coming from my other speaker does a few riffs. Again it goes silent and the bass and drums take the lead. So far this seems to be a song of dueling guitar riffs which is kind of cool.

Now the bass goes silent and the drumming is almost silent, and suddenly there is an explosion and although the song is halfway through it seems to be just getting started.

The vocals come in at 2:00. I can't really decipher what they are saying. The only part I can really make out is the "no love lost" part. There are some quick background vocals.

Now it sounds like a monologue being read to the music. Reminds me of "The Gift" by VU. Ok, the next verse is similar to the first. The music has gotten a little repetitive at this point. There are the background vocals for a quick "I need it" again, and cymbals take the song out.

I really like the first half of the song, but I didn't particulary care for the vocals or the repetitive style of the second half of the song. I'll give it a

starts with a piano, some percussions and a soft bass, making this spanish-turkish sound. The piano gets slower, completely different rythm and still sounds familiar; Then vocals come in with some great lyrics.
The sound continues evolving, Piano going from top to bottom, and electric guitar comes in slow with high distorsion to do his appearence on this fully progresive solo. For this part the song have completely changed, piano, smooth distorted guitar and percussions fade out

I couldn't get the unplugged, so I got the original version I assume. I hope that's okay :( .

Anyways, the song starts out very calm, with some neat guitar work, then goes into a verse with a simple drum beat. Now the singer starts singing in spanish I believe. I like his voice, and the music is exciting. The guitar playing is easily the focal point of the song, as the drum is still just looping. Each chorus is great and filled with emotion. Okay, now I am at the last minute of the song, and the guitar goes into a solo. I assume it's going to last the rest of the song, predictable but enjoyable none the less. I like the bass and guitar efforts in this song, and the singer has a great voice. The only flaw with this song is the drumming, the boring drum beat didn't work for me. The guitar playing isn't overly technical, but it's pleasant and easy to listen to, and I like that.

Lead vocals come in and the song starts floatin takin u along burbon st.
by the 3rd minute the beat box, piano and vocals have made this magnificent blend. there's defintely no need for more intruments. Im starting to think this can't get any better, but it does! Summer comes for everyone!!!!. The sound of a plane passing by and a classical piano takes over on a solo, it's makin me shiver, im flotain along with the tune: "tu tu tu ru ru ru"
It slowly fades away, and the wave rolls back

The whole song has this moby kinda groove and still sounds in a completely different way.
Excelent piece of advice mate!!

Cafe Tacuba - No Controles 3.09

Starts on a really chessy drum beat and acoustic guitar, not really feeling it at the moment, the bass is the only good the moment. These vocals are messed up like they are trying to rap, somewhat catchy. The verse repeats with mor bass this time not much different. Now there is some fast acoustic playing followed by some horrible singing. The effects in the brigde aren't very good but whatever. After the brigde the chorus comes back again and then the song ends.

Fugazi - Sweet and Low

starts with a repeating guitar chord followed up with a groovy bassline and some drums. very laid back and reminds me of mogwai. now the guitars become a little more distorted and louder. the riff changes up a little here and then goes back to the original. back the 'chorus' (i guess thats what it would be) and then the song ends.

would i listen to more of the same band: yeah, i probably would

Radiohead - Go To Sleep

Starts off with some acoustic guitar, mellow vocals coming through, now the drums have kicked in, track seems very mellow and chilled out (although so is much of Radioheads stuff - or what i've heard of their music anywayz). Now the riffs changed, with weird echoes over the vocals. Its picking up a bit now...(doesn't sound like anything off OK Computer which is the only Radiohead album i've heard so far). Some distortion effects coming through now in a sort of intrumental interlude...seems to be finishing - yes it has.... good song, very mellow vocals that compliment the music brilliantly. 8.5/10 - got to listen to more off Hail To The Thief!

My Picks:

The Postal Service - Nothing Better
Iron And Wine - Promising Light
Mineral - Loveletter Typewriter

This thread is dieing a slow and painful death. :upset:

Mineral - Loveletter Typewriter

Hmm this seems like it's gonna be a slow and emotional song... yes. yes it is.

It's not too bad so far. A little too slow for me. The singer is kind of dragging it out too much. And I think he's trying a little too hard to sound earnest. Oh wow, it's finished. Um, it's way too much of the same thing all the way through. It seems like it's building up to something, but then it just ends.

I'm not really in a "slow song" mood right now, so that'd be affecting this. But yeah, I don't really like this one.
