All I Know Is Tonight - Jaga Jazzist
For the first 20 or so seconds there's some little beeping reverby stuff and then the song explodes into a arrangement of numerous insturments. I know alot about Jaga Jazzist, so it's pretty amazing that they went from a drum and bass duo to something like this. All the insturments are very well mixed, and you can clearly hear them all. There is also some chanting and "ahing" in the background. The clear leader of the song is the horns at the moment. Around 2:10 most of the insturments settle and there is a brief guitar solo with some bass and drum backing. Then the horns make a return. After the horns make their return it breaks into what could be describe as "the chorus" although it's an insturmental song so it's hard to describe. It's basically the point that the song is really building up too. Around 4:00 a brief flute causes the song to descend into some low horns, there is some bass, drums and quiet stirngs in the background. It's all really well put together and this is one of my favorite tracks off of What We Must. After about 2 minutes of the quiet stuff, the song breaks back into the chorus which is a very emotional release in my opinion. Lots of insturments start to come in and make it feel really built up and then it ends.

Jens Lekman - Tram # 7 To Heaven
I like the lofi vibe it gives off. It starts with a pleasent little simple guitar melody, and then the vocals come in. Sounds very similar to Nick Drake, only not as sad, the vox I mean. They lyrics are bit interesting. A bit of synth like sounds appear now and then. I like how it sorta really gets big at the 2:20s and after.
It's a cute little song, I liked it.

My pick:
Bonnie Prince Billy and the Marquis de Tren - 2/15 (a mellow, sweet song)
http://s46.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=16FNTKV7XNFOF3QC929914UNW3
I've never heard of the band/song so I enter with an open mind;
Starts tentatively with the sound of several guitars, It seems carefully orchestrated and has a melancholic tone to it. I like the voice, but its adds to the tender quality of the song. I think I also hear a piano in places, this works really well, The subtelty of the instruments is outstanding.
The voice has started to pick up now with "I know you take pleasure in my singing", I can't quite grasp the lyrics but they sound powerful, that might however just be the context of the song. There is now a small passage with a really whiney backing vocal, this is the wakest part of the song yet, but doesn't really damage my overall impression. The song continues through another verse, which is much the same as the rest of the song.
Overall this is a neat song which seems to do alot without doing much if that makes any sense. Although I like the subtelty which I mentioned I would have liked to the singers voice really stretched towards the end in one powerful serge, but that is obviously not what they are going for. I would give this song about an 8/10, I found it quite listenable and I might have rated it higher had I not been in a slightly more energetic mood.

Alice in Chains with Pearl Jam - Alone (acoustic)
I've heard both bands, but not this song.
Acoustic guitar chords starts it off, I guess it wouldn't be an electric would it? Sounds like an AIC song, just going by the sound of that guitar. Layne starts singing, goes on a bit. Sounds nice, another singer joins in, but it doesnt sound like Eddie Vedder.
In the chorus, someone else joins in to harmonize "I'm alone" while Layne sings on. The harmonies are sung pretty powerfully, the guitar chords havn't changed at all.
After about 2 mins the drums start keeping the beat and a there's a short guitar solo. The drums stop when the solo does.. some feedback. Acoustic guitar still doing the same thing, its nice in its simplicity.
More of the singing, the verse after the solo sounds really good for some reason, then the chorus again. And there it ends.
Not bad, though not terribly exciting. Vocals were pretty good. Just a nice acoustic song, It's hard to think of anything else to say. 7/10

Rumors of The Big Wave - Burning Times
Looking at the band's name I wouldn't have known that they played pagan music if I wasn't told about it. I can't say I know much about this genre, much less listen to it often.
Some low and mellow cellos(?) open the song. They sound very swirly and mystical, like the tunes they use for medieval themes. On the 50 second mark they slow down a bit and an even lower melody takes it place, this time with kind of a stomping rhythm. Then a male and female vocalist join in singing at the same time, still very low-pitched like the cellos accompanying them.
Okay, some piano and short bursts of flute come in as well and.... the vocalists start chanting words I'm not familiar with, most probably an ethnic language, for a few seconds then they stop. Drums and bass enter and they start singing again. Very nice buildup, and the "mystic" mood is constant throughout.
I don't really know what the lyrics are about but since it's pagan I guess it's about the witches who were burned down("in this holocaust against the nature people/9 million European women died") I forgot when. The instruments take command for a minute or so, the song has more of a tribal feel now. When the singers come in they sound a lot livelier now and they end abruptly at "it is our will to survive".
I don't think I've heard anything like this before, it's a very unique and original song. Honestly, it's not my thing but it was a very interesting listen but I'll see if I can get into this stuff sometime.

Hogging all the Islands - Soul-Junk
...free jazz and noise...
That sounds horendous.
/goesintothiswithdoubts
Surprisingly though the very first couple of seconds sound fantastic. The beat and bass sound promising, then some annoying steel drum kinda thing starts up which sounds terrible. Not only that though, but Soul-Junk's flow doesn't appeal to me at all, very sloppy, add some bad lyrics and he isn't making this experience any better. Dear Lord.
Very repetitive for a very long time, a particularly bad part though is the 'JeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesusUsASsssusUSs!!!!' bit.
Short review, bland song.
ergh, I can't do anything more for this than rate it, at 1.5/10 - I did like some of the rapping and that first couple of seconds was worth a half a point.

Efterklang - Kloy Gyn
Something about "electronic stuff" got my attention. I hope it's not some repetitive dance.
Ooh, no, Bjork and Mum comes to mind straight away. A dreamy soundscape with an electric piano/glock thing, reverby cave noises and percussion similar to someone eating biscuts next to the mic. Very soft and ambient, just the kind of thing I love. It has a steady beat, which is usually a plus for me. Some soft trumpets or horns are playing along a bit now.
There are some electronic elements showing through, mostly as effects on the drums. It's so calm and melodic. It's great. The singer starts, very soft voiced male, I cant tell what he is saying since its a bit muffled. But I don't care.
The real drums come in later on, the music is building slowly, at just the right pace that you don't notice it and you don't get bored either. Theres so much stuff that wasn't happening before, but it's like it was always there.
It's 7 minutes long, but goes by quickly... Uh, points off for the sudden ending, I reckon that song needs an ending that floats away instead. It was perfect up until now.
The reason I do FL's is to find music like this, and hopefully give back as good in return. Awsome stuff there.

I think I have heard the majority of the GLC singles but have never heard this song. I do actually find their songs (in the most part) quite funny but it's not something I would buy. Anyway lets have a listen.....
GLC - Monkey Love
Starts with a cool little rythem and guitar part and some talking. The lyrics are telling a story which is funny as usual, but the voice is singing rather than the usual brand of Welsh rap. The singin voice however is mock serious and there seems to be an echo effect on it which makes it sound all the more cheesy. There isbacking vocal on the word zoo which repeas the word which also adds to the cheesy humour. There is a small break of rap next which is hilarious.
"Together we can live in the forest, eating berries and kissing eachother"
The style of verses continue, cheesyness and funny lyrics resume. A sense a chorus now with the words:
"I love the Monkey", this bit is really funny.
The lyrics to this song are so good, especially in the storytelling section. I especially enjoyed the bit "until the authorities came and took her away, and gave me one of thos injections for rabies. I still love her and maybe somewhere out there she's listening"...this closes the song
Overall this ong kept me entertained from start to finish so I guess that means it's good. I'm not sure why I don't consider buying their debut 'greatest hits' because they never dissappoint, maybe just not the sort of thing I'd listen to often. Anyway Top Class stuff I'd give it 7-8/10.

From the genre description, I'm not really looking forward to this. I'll try to give it a shot though.
Corrosion of Conformity - Stare too Long
From the first 10 seconds, I can't help think that this might be what Pink Floyd would have sounded like if they formed in Alabama.
The singing comes in, nothing special. The Chorus is a little sloppy and too much is going on. The drums at the break remind me a little bit of Ringo's drumming in "A day in the Life". Chorus again.
Now the solo isn't too bad. Nothing special, but it fits the song. The guitars work pretty well together at the instrumental part. Chorus again...
The second solo is almost the same as the first, but the other instruments kinda **** it up this time. I actually like the vocal "woo hoos" at this part. The songs ended pretty well, with the guitar squealing long after the other instruments stopped.
Overall, I give it a 6/10. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't try to get one of their albums

Andrew Bird - Skin is, my
Starts of with some piano and a keys, until the vocals break in (drums with them.) has a pretty catchy verse, and the chorus sounds like a bunch of mumbling. The songs got a very jazz feel, until the distorted guitar comes in at around :50 seconds. There's a barrage of insturments in the background that can be faintly heard and it reminds me of Sufjan too an extent. The songs ok, and the salsa break in the middle is pretty enjoyable.

Everyday at 3:05 - Jerome's Dream
Found it.
The song opens with the buzz of electricity through a wire. Bang, the music starts and it's what I would call frenzied, really good stuff though. Still got a good sense of melody in amongst the craziness. The drums stoke the tempo and are played brutally, but not in a death metal way, just a very strong fashion. Real good stuff.
25 seconds in and you can just about hear some shout/scream vocals, so low in the mix you kinda miss them. Reminds me of Biffy when they play full throttle, just a little rawer, still good though.
The slow section which starts at the 45 second mark is fairly poor. The vocals are still there and they aren't detracting from the music, make quite a nice contrast I would say.
Having already wasted too much time with the slower part the band whip themselves into frenzy again and this is what I enjoy most. The rising and soaring chords kinda remind me of Explosions in the Sky but of course this is very different.
The song chokes itself quickly to finish the music, but the buzz of amps and electricity still carries on for a few moments after.
The song was really good when the band was playing the 'frenzied' stuff but I felt the slow section was pretty poor. Overall, I would rate it a 7.5/10. Will look for some more stuff from them.

Duct Tape - P.O.S; Hip-Hop/Rap - 3:48
Some ethic percussion in this piece, which makes the beat rather interesting. It also containes a fiddle. The rapper's delivery is strong, very strong. He obviously has something to say. The breakdown at 1:38 is kind of weak, and it really isn't needed. But back the the verse at 1:55. More strong delivery, which leads to me believe that this is a very powerful song. The chorus comes around again, and another breakdown, which whispers the chorus. The chorus comes around once again with more intensity. Then the song ends.
Overall the lyrics were top notch (the ones I could hear anyways). His delivery reminds me of eminem, a more serious eminem. I loved the beat and everything else, except the breakdowns. The breakdowns really added nothing, and were a poor way to lead to the next verse/chorus. It's good enough for me to keep though.

Ok, I've never knowingly heard anything by this band. From what I've heard about them, I think they're a metal band, but I could be way off.
Opeth - Patterns In The Ivy II
It starts out with a classical-esque guitar and some mellow vocals. Another guitar joins in, reminding me a little bit of "wish you were here", at least in the way they work together. Nothing's really happening, I expected this to be an intro, but it seems to be the basis of the song. Something about manifestation or something is the chorus. The second guitar is going into a solo, it's the highlight of the song, I think it fits pretty well. Okay, so this isn't a metal band. The name of the song seems to fit the music pretty well, as the guitars seem to intertwine and clmb like ivy ( :upset: sorry that I can't find really anything to say about this song)
Overall - 5/10. Not my type of music, but I liked parts of it, I might give them another listen sometime.

Tortoise - Swung from the Gutters
Quite a jazz-band intro (with the drums). It feels slightly aquatic aswell. I'm hoping the pace will pick up soon. Ooh, it did. This song gives of a sneaky, kinda spy-film buzz. I like it so far. Pretty decent guitarring. I like the jazz breakdown, it's like laternative elevator music. This is cool, but it kinda plods along and stays quite samey. It's changed dynamic, I like it. Very Can-ish, rather twisted and backward. This would be a trip through headphones man. It's reverted back to the main part, nicely done. Yeah a good song.

Pink Mountaintops - Bad Boogie Ballin'
Starts off with electronic beats doing some sort of post-punk jig and weird noises that make the song sound like it's pulled out from a suspense thriller. Then some more sounds come in(a guitar/bass and I dunno what to make of the other one.. accordion?) so now it's very whimsical in an odd way. Nice. It reminds me so much of some stuff from The Kills but this is a lot quirkier, but then a macho vocalist comes in. He's not gruff or anything, his voice just contrasts with the music a lot especially 'cause they're both very repetitious throughout the song. Now it sounds like something from a mystery novel. He chants the "Bad Boogie Ballin'" near the end with a backup "aoohhhhhchhh". I like this song, it's not too serious even if there's not much change in the flow so it's not boring.

I've downloaded and re-downloaded it a few times, so I assume I'm getting the latest versions, and it never seems to work.

I know, ignore my post. I did it because we were stuck, and I didn't see 033 suggest that we use Happymeal's links. I would delete my post, but I'm going to leave it, in case someone wants the songs

Air - Talisman
Theres something very "Hotel California" about the chord progressions in this. It could be keyboard as much as it could be guitar, I can't tell. It's slow and a bit airy, heh. Air draw a fine line between nice minimalistic atmospherics and boredom, and from my experience they can just as easily fall on either side.
Here's a bass line that is quite audible. And there's definitely piano now, some string's have started as well. It sounds slightly trippy, maybe a little like Pink Floyd. A soft gallop of an electric drum beat starts, although in words it may seem fast.. well it is, but it fits with the slow moving music quite well.
Ok, it's gone far enough to be 99% sure there no vocals in this one, it's relying on variation and some improvisation to keep it interesting and it's a job well done. All sorts of "moody" string bits come and go, bluesy/jazzy piano accidentals, etc. nothing really stays the same except the chord progression and drums.
I must say the instruments volumes are balanced nicely as well, I can hear all of it. Air have done a good job with this song, not super good, but a solid good-good. I just hope no one dib'd while I wrote this out

Bird Blobs - Bullworker
Opens with a sort of dark PiL/Gang of Four bassline for a few seconds and then funky drums come in. The guitars are kinda bouncing, gives off quite an eerie atmosphere. A second guitar comes in and it's lower and quite grainy. Ooh, dudes got some sinister vocals happening. This reminds me of an industrialised Cramps for some reason. I'm liking it quite a bit, but I like Bird Blobs so it's no surprise.
The guitar interplay is effective and so is the bass, even though it's very repetitive. The little interlude/breakdown parts are good for seperation. He's whining (in a good way) now, still quite sinister vocals.
This is quite danceable in a way, but also quite introverted and subdued. I like it alot.

Murder City Devils - Press Gang
Starts with a cool slightly modulated organ melody, sounds almost like a zZz song. This is nice straight up angry hard rock. The vocalist doesn't really sing, he kinda has a Henry Rollins like vocal style. I find the guitar melodies nothing really special, it's basic chord patterns. The organ gives the song a very manic, hectic feel. The singers voice sometimes gets a bit drowned out in the guitars. The song as a whole works really well, it's just very basic -in-your-face stuff. I like the bridge, it's a bit more arranged. There is a brief, rock 'n roll like guitar lick that annouces the songs climax.
This song is pretty good, although I'm not sure if it represents the sound of the Murder City Devils well. I don't find it particularly original, but it's a good raw edged rock song, which is a rare find these days. My rating for this is 7/10
My picks:
The Delgados - Keep On Breathing Alternative/pop rock
Thomas Dybdahl - Pale Green Eyes Acoustic folk/pop. TIP: listen to this through headphones!

Thomas Dybdahl - Pale Green Eyes
Slow intro, sounds very ambient. I like the glockenspiel (I think?), it's different. Reminds me of Eno or slower Kaada material so far. Wow his voice is quite unique, like a deeper, better Antony. Acoustic guitars, hollow drums, fun percussion. The female/male thing works quite well. The lyrics are slightly hard to pick up on, but they don't seem overly important. There's some weird effects in the background. The instruments are quite uplifting but the voices cme out in a very melancholy way.
I like this, very easy on the ears and it's quite interesting. I'll definately venture further into this dudes stuff.

Wrens - Ex-Girl Collection
A very quiet first few seconds, I hear some organ playing and harmonics. Then the band comes in very soft, the vocalist whispering even softer and there's a lot of twinkly bits going on. The guy's voice creaks and the song picks up the pace, but not by much. Guitars are very jangly during the steady beat and at first listen it sounds like your average guitar-pop song.
The twinkly background noise I just noticed is a bit distorted and a bit annoying at times, good thing it doesn't stand out. Around 2 minutes the song gets a bit louder(emphasis on "a bit") and it mellows down again, I'm guessing this is the bridge. On goes the guy again, whose words I can't really understand aside from "laaaaaaaah" or "leeeeeeeeh" in the chorus. The drums stop, and the innocent-sounding outro comes in.. and a sample of a guy singing/talking? Then another song overlaps it in the last 4 seconds.
Weird song, well maybe just because I took it at face value. All the little intricacies are pretty distracting and I think are what makes this a good song.

Espers - "Riding"
Song opens with a couple of soft acoustic guitars combining for a pretty sweet intro instrumental part. Intimate male vocals come in soon after with some female vocals over the top just for acompaniment but not singing any lyrics, but just mimicing the melody.
There is an electric guitar that comes in about 1:10 into the song and gives a so so solo with the acoustic guitar still present. The vocals are back, and they are pretty comforting. Now another electric guitar solo. Nothing too impressive here as far as the solo is concerned, but I am liking the song structure so far.
Now another electric guitar with some distortion comes in and the solo takes a different direction. It is wierd having the soothing acoustic guitars juxtaposed with the buzzing distorted electrics, but it works rather nicely. This is nothing mind-blowing, but it is a good song.

Cat Power - "Speak For Me"
Cat Power - Speak for me
Opens with a simple guitar riff, it is quite nice in its simplicty and gives a sense of something building. The female voice enters, it is quite nice, despite it not being particuarly strong it has good intonation.
The drums and some backing vocals kick in for the chorus, I love the way the backing vocals sound. The drums give the backbone which it clealy needed. you can hear a Piano in the background which sounds quite good. There is now a lead guitar part which is once again simple, the words and structure from the first verse then comes back. My oppinion on the voice has changed throughout, I'm really liking it now. And I still love those backing vocals!
The song ends rather abruptly after a second chorus and the repeated lead guitar section. Because of the short length of the song I feel it never really reaches the climax it desrves, however it is also nice that it is so simple. In general I think its is pretty cool song, I will definately look out for a band which I had heard nothing of prior to hearing this.
try:
Ben Harper - Forever genre = Acoustic singer songwriter
or
Danger Doom - Sofa King genre = Hip Hop

Ben Harper - Forever (not the live version)
Soft slow acoustic chords in the start, very nice so far (first 10 seconds). Ben starts singing and a there's some hand percussion joining in, it's all so sparse and minimal, and this is perfect. Guess I'll have to listen to the lyrics, they're nice and clear.. and because the music has now been fully described.
There's a definite sad vibe in the song, he's been let down too many times by love. Clever use of the word "forever," he never says the word "love" in this song, but the intended meaning is so clear.
The chorus is a bit happier, he's still hopeful that he can find a love that will last forever. The words are done well, evasive and effective, I really like it.
There's a break from singing in the middle this guitar playing reminds me a bit of RHCP. Another verse and chorus follow.. and it's over too soon.. but I guess it couldn't go on for... ever?
Very nice stuff, despite it being sad. I'm glad it was so soft because I'm a bit tired now. It felt really right, as sparse as it was. Maybe another verse or chorus and a little bit of lead guitar would have topped it off. The live version must sound pretty good.

Custard - "Ladies and Gentlemen"
Starts off pretty subdued, not diggin' so much on this intro. Oh that's a cheesy little drum fill. Oohh I kinda like this bit at about 0:52 seconds or so... do I hear some violin in the background? Should be more prominent. Goes into a kinda of little happy basic guitar solo, but I like how it gets backed up with the sax near to the end. At about 2:22, that violin seems really out of place, but it sort of steps back a bit later. Still not diggin' those same sappy chord changes over and over... "Bah Bah Bum Bum Bum" and we're done.
The singer was pretty boring throughout. No energy whatsoever. Some people can pull off that type of singin' but he can't. The song itself was half-decent I suppose, but from that song I'd have no desire to check into any of their other releases.
