Then today I find out I'm banned for it. I guessed it was probably because it was only between cynic & PtH at the point of posting but still ...seems kinda lame to be banned for that :-/

Well the thing with casual internet slurs, whether they're serious or not, is they tend to make everybody in the surrounding area look like a complete loser. It hasn't been ruthlessly enforced in the past, but the thinking is that it's not worth annoying the hell out of the majority to appease a moronic minority.

the number of errors in that post are far too numerous for me to be bothered to correct but I'll just say on the last couple things: posting in bad threads has always been against the rules, the idea being that you can have some self-control and avoid posting in them and then we shouldn't even have to close threads. Novel, I know. I've not been banning Eliminator, but to my knowledge he is not a ban-on-sight poster. I would have to assume he's doing something to deserve bans.

tbh it's all very quick for me, I close the thread, highlight all post in the thread and ban everyone for the same reason and same duration. If I had to do them all individually I wouldn't bother. But the ban serves to remind people that they shouldn't be doing it and maybe won't in the future.

I tried to offer a reasonable compromise on how we can settle this without having to get out of control on the bans, but if we're gonna start being strict constructionists of the rules how about we start banning people or dicussing drugs too? Well I think the point is that anybody who doesn't know the run of the place can't be expected to know that a thread full of people spewing racist phrases isn't filled with racists. That's essentially the point that's being made.

But I mean it would be a lot easier for us to just quietly delete racist and antisemitic posts (either way, they're not going to be left up), but when it's become a culture that's not really an option anymore. Once it's not a problem, it can be treated lightly; but as long as it is as prevalent as it is, it has to be met with bans.

I wouldn't call a small subforum a thriving culture. The fact is that the forums' active membership has been falling steadily for the past 2 years or so, in direct contrast to the reviews site, and there has to be a reason why the growing membership of the latter isn't crossing over the forums. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the casual use of racist language which had become endemic on all forums (I recently deleted over 1500 of these references across seven or eight forums) is one of the reasons. Not the only reason, but one of them.

That's leaving aside the far more obvious point that nobody here wants to be associated with racism/antisemitism/nazism except the small number of users who choose to attract such attention upon themselves.
