I can see where they would be a problem in The Pit, but I think most of us here in R&M are mature enough—if only marginally—not to post goatse and child pr0n pics.

Well, moderating staff. It comes the time where Mappy'd like another avatar change. Yes, I know, it's irritating, I ask of it too often, however, I'm sure you could find it in your hearts to help. I've been here for a number of years, nearly 3 and a half, contributing to the discussion of bad bands that only 15 year old girls would like, but then, look at my aspirations. Who wouldn't want to be like a 15 year old girl? Partially developed, nearly sexy, and impulsive beyond belief. It's a position of power. A position of grace. A position deserving of an avatar as ill as this:

Jelle what must I do to get rid of this awful name?
Luc, you have to just let Jelle know once, and hope he is in a good mood. And you need a new essay for each avatar, or for Tojes to be online.
ATRU, this is one of Aesop's fables, where you're the locust or something and Jelle is, I dunno, the waffle? In other words, you asked Jelle to change your name to "something erotic". Like it or not, this is one of those "be careful what you wish for" life lessons.

"When I first came to this forum, I listened to bands like Slipknot, Atreyu and In Flames. I didn't even know how to use blogsearch, so I had to beg people for links to all the shitty albums I wanted to download. The nadir of my experience here came when I got addicted to crack cocaine and stole people's rep points in order to finance my habit. Eventually, I realized I hit rock bottom, so to speak. I had a full line of red neg bars and scrounged for flakes of crack on the sidewalk just to feel normal for another day. The next morning, I stubbornly marched out of the rundown crack-house where I once lived, never to return again. While in counseling, I learned about good bands such as Summoning, Amon Amarth and Rhapsody of Fire and stopped being such a hardcore fag. With time, I became a man about town and brought great cheer to the community thread. I even regained enough of my drug-addled intellect to excoriate self-important hypocrites in the black metal thread, help nobs with software / Intertubes related issues and guide Riva on the path to learning Swedish.

My Musical Autobiography
Throughout my life, there have been few things that have made such an impact on me as music has. Music is the perfect friend everyone has always wanted. It can do all sorts of things and convey all sorts of emotions. Music can entertain, pump up, and even comfort. Its uses are endless and to even try to imagine my life without it is almost impossible. Without music, would Elvis have always been a truck driver? What would Ferris Bueller dance in the parade to? And what would become of the writers of The Wedding Singer? Music is essential in life and it plays a huge role in not only my life but life in general. Without it, life would be boring.
Ever since I was a baby I have been surrounded by music. My mom, while being heavily into music such as Madonna, never played it in the house or even at all. My dad, however, would play all sorts of music when I was young, from Brit Pop to Industrial. He listened to a lot of Morrissey, Pet Shop Boys, and Jimmy Somerville. He still listens to these artists a lot, and Pet Shop Boys are his favorite band. Of course, my dad has a rather wide range of music taste. He would also play Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin, and Frank Zappa. While Pet Shop Boys are very poppy, Alice in Chains and Led Zeppelin are classic rock and grunge rock, and Frank Zappa is jazz fusion. My dad still listens to all of these bands, which is a rather honorable feat when one looks at how much new music has come out in the last fifteen years. Also, a lot of the times I hear my dad playing music I recognize, but I don’t know who the artist is or what the song is called. It almost always turns out to be an artist or band that he played from when I was a child. Nowadays, my dad and I share a bit of music taste with each other, as we both like Nine Inch Nails and Muse quite a bit. I can fairly say that my dad has played a large role in the development of my current music taste. It’s quite amazing how hearing a genre of music repeatedly as a baby can influence one’s own future taste in music. Thank God my dad didn’t listen to Madonna, and thank God my mom never played any.
Growing up around the tender age of eight, the two places I looked to for new music was the radio and my older sister, who at the time was thirteen. My sister listened to the definitive angst-ridden teenager music. Bands such as Metallica and The Offspring were what I heard a lot of. I still really like The Offspring to this day. Looking back, I wish I could have searched further for my own music, but at the time I had no problem listening to what my older sister listened to. In fact, I actually liked it. I continued to listen to these bands until I was about ten or eleven, when I eventually broadened my horizons a bit and started to listen to tons of Incubus and a lot of Tool. This was the point in time where I eventually discovered my own taste in music. I started to look for music in more places than my sister’s CD case and the radio. My dad’s music stayed the same as it was in the earlier years, which is not a bad thing at all. My dad grew tolerant to my sister’s music, and they both eventually learned to enjoy my own. By the time I was twelve, my favorite band was Tool, and I was also in love with Rage against the Machine. I could finally think for myself.
Now, in high school, I have many ways of discovering and obtaining music. I rarely listen to the radio anymore as it is overrun with twenty different bands that play the same exact same music, although they all claim to be “new” and “original” and that they are going to “reinvent rock and bring it back to the mainstream.” Most of these bands do not realize that what they are doing is destroying rock as much as they are creating it. Just because there is more of it doesn’t mean all of it is good. Of course, there are many bands that write the same song over and over, such as AC/DC or Guns n’ Roses. Of course, the radio is meant for easy listening most of the time, so I would not demean these bands for being catchy. I much prefer listening to music on the internet and finding bands that sound like other bands. I also obtain music in a different way than others in a daily e-mail from a website linked with Apple. This e-mail is full of relevant artists and songs that Apple thinks I may like by what I listen to on iTunes and what my ratings are on it. I enjoy this thoroughly, and it has helped me to discover a lot of new music.
I like to think that I have a diverse taste in music. My favorite bands include Between the Buried and Me, a progressive death metal band, Porcupine Tree, a progressive pop rock band, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, a post-rock band, The Offspring, a pop punk band, Mogwai, a post-rock band, and Less Than Jake, a ska-punk band. While my interests mainly fall into the Rock genre with a bit of Punk in there as well, I also enjoy some jazz and hip hop every now and then. I love Avishai Cohen and Hiromi, who are both jazz artists. I also love some Wu Tang Clan every now and then. While jazz and hip hop are not my favorite genres, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy specific artists from these respective genres. I don’t understand why people could just shrug off a genre just because they don’t like some of what they’ve heard. Everyone should embrace all types of music because they all have something different to offer!
As well as the aforementioned bands, I also love movie scores and musicals. Some of my favorites include “Jesus Christ Superstar” and of course, “Aida” for musicals. I love work done by James Howard Newton, who has done work for movies such as “Unbreakable” and “The Village”, both by M. Night Shyamalan, and the score to the film “Memento”. I am also in love with the opening sequence to the Disney animated film “Beauty and the Beast” as well as that whole soundtrack in general. Along with scores, I like some classical music. I too enjoy a fair share of Bach and Brahms, as well as any rendition of Amazing Grace ever done. These composers were indeed geniuses. We have yet to have a composer as brilliant as Beethoven.
I believe that in order to fully appreciate music, one must play an instrument. I could never understand how somebody could listen to their favorite song and not want to jam on it on guitar afterwards. Knowing how to play a song only makes the song that much better. It creates even more of a bond between the listener and the music. I play drums, guitar, bass, and I dabble in piano every now and then. I’ve been playing drums for six and a half years, guitar for about four, bass for about three, and piano for about a year and a half. My favorite instrument to play is the drums, but my favorite to write music on is the piano, because it just has all the notes laid out in front for you. Simple is not always bad! While I enjoy playing drums the most, my favorite instruments to listen to are piano with violin. I love orchestral sounds and how beautiful stringed instruments can sound together. If I ever pick up another instrument, it would definitely be violin.
I could never live a life without music without a part of me dying inside. I listen to music whenever I can. I listen to music when I eat breakfast, when I go to bed, and every time in between. It is my life and my sole hobby. Anytime not spent on homework, food, sleep, or friends is devoted entirely to music. If music did not exist, what would I do, join Scrabble Club?
I don’t think so. “If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music.” This is a definitive statement for mankind. Music is essential to my psychological survival. It enhances my life, and it gives me drive and motivation. Music makes me feel every sort of emotion, but overall happy. It makes me happy, it makes me sad, it makes me calm, and it makes me mad. It can do whatever you want it to do. Never underestimate the power of music, for the day has yet to come where music has failed me.

Why Big80smullet Deserves a Large Avatar.
By Big80sMullet
BIg80smullet, sometimes known simply as Evan, has been a member of the Soutnikmusic Community since August 2003. He is poster with a very distinctive sense of humor and a very easy going demeanor. Upon joining the community in 2004 big80smullet was exposed to many new bands and although very reluctant to move away from his staple diet of metallica, Slayer and Rage Against The Machine, his eyes were opened to whole new genres of music that he had never dreamed he would enjoy. At the insistance of svereal members whos names have been lost in the fog of time, he became a big fan of post rock and metal genres, and still retains that enjoyment to this day.
Big80smullet is a prominent member of the Australian commumity on Sputnikmusic and was a major contributor to the Classifieds section, particularly the gig guides previous to their removal. He continues to be active in the small yet close knit australian community thread with over a thousand post.
Although a self confessed pit rat big80smullet always visits other forums and is attempting to limit his time in the pit, due to the detrimental effect on his mental health, and is spending more time in R+M, guitar and Video Games/Movies forums. He also has a penis which is 4 litres.
His hobbies outside MX include reverse grafitti, ninjitsu, writing haikus, kite surfing, rally driving, War photography, Youth work and counselling of underpriviledged aboriginal children in remote outback communities, creating GIFs of facist dictators, and converting protein into muscle mass. Big80smullet has also been playing guitar for 5 years and can do a mean acoustic cover of hit me baby one more time. His 24 hour masurbation record is 14.37
BIg80smullet has never been banned or cautioned for he is a very concientious poster, however he did go on a self imposed two year exile between june 2005 and july 2007 in which time he travelled the world seeing amazing sights and opening his mind to new experiences and cultures. This give him great tolerance in dealing with people from other cultures and he is especially sensitive to american culture, having spent 3 summers studying their ways. Big80smullet returned to Sputnikmusic in july 2007 a wiser and more well rounded poster with a renewed vitality for forum life.
Big80smullet spent several months working in bolivia in an orphanage for children with aids and/or landmine injuries. The children struck him as needy and pathetic but rather cute in a malnourished way, so he stayed to help them. He would feed and teach them and in his whole time at the orphanage he never punched even one child.
In conclusion, big80smullet deserves a large avatar because he is a poster of high quality. he is a multi talented, multi cultural and multi dimensional being. He is a high profile member of the australian community and well respected and liked (he hopes). He can also differentiate between entree and mains cutlery on a regular basis

So is it cool to ask for a name change? I asked about it over in the main forums b/c it was the only place the site was letting me post, and Jom said You need to get in touch with Superpeer - look him up in the Members List or inquire in Rock & Metal's report problems thread. He's a nice guy and easily approachable. and this is the thread I think he's talking about. If I'm in the totally wrong forum I'm sorry! If y'all let me do this, I'd like to change the name to StabbingArt. Thanks in advance no matter what your answer is!
This is the thread, but he might not have seen your request yet. It's not like he's online 24/7. Just chill.

Hello, I would like to fill out a request for a new avatar as I have found one I rather enjoy and have grown tired of this one.
Why Angmar deserves a new avatar:
Angmar has long been a regular user in the land of MX Rock&Metal and is always striving to be a good poster. When arguments break out Angmar will often try and act as someone to break them up, and never participates in heavy flaming and or trolling of other users. Even when BRA was in his most prime for trolling Angmar often resisted and tried to tell him what things he could do to improve as a poster and to help be more accepted by others. Whether these attempts were successful or not is not what is important, but the fact that he tried even when the biggest odds were against him! It is acts of kindness like these that Angmar frequently attempts to commit to all users.
In addition to being someone who tries to be kind through his posts Angmar is also always willing to lend a helping hand to the forum. For a few months Angmar ran the Daily Upload, and now he is thinking about taking over the songwriting competition in hopes of brining some life back into it. He also tries to do his best in reporting anything on the forums that is seen as a major issue. It can also be seen that his fellow MXers appreciate Angmar due to his high reputation count.
It is for these reasons that Angmar can be seen as a helpful and courteous member of the MX family. He is always there to lend a helping hand, and to show others kindness. It is for these reasons that he deserves a new large avatar. So by the kindness of the moderation team, Angmar wishes for this depiction of the Donald Duck Nazi for his new avatar.

Hi guys, I'd like to request an avatar change.
Mappy feels Mappy deserves this avatar, as Mappy's been a contributing member to these boards since October of 2004. Mappy has contributed to such discussions as metalcore, any other death heads, the r&m screamo thread, and black metal. Mappy has also tried his hardest to share the latest xscenexcorex breakdownery with all of his internet friends. Most importantly, Mappy won that Wham! Last Christmas contest, awarding Mappy a large avatar, even though Mappy had a large avatar before the contest.
Mappy would also like to point out that Mappy has greatly fought Mappy's urgest to troll the denizens of the Hardcore/Emo forum, and to actually contribute to conversation in threads, as opposed to the constant slag of spam (that I know I could still improve on). Mappy also feels that his current avatar takes up too much space, and that a smaller one would look nicer and also rep an ill niggas.

Hello Superpeer.
Recently, actually in the last six months or so, whenever I attempt to respond to a review and post a comment on a review, a screen comes up that says, "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage". This is very irritating, because I made an album review for BTBAM about 2 months ago and couldn't respond to the positive/negative feedback.
I can however reply in threads, create albums reviews, and even do soundoffs of albums, but for some reason I cannot comment on a review, and this goes for every computer I use, which is three or four of them between my apartment, school, and my friends and parents house. So it seems like there could be a bug in my account.
Hopefully we can figure this out, because I'ts really putting a damper on my use of this website.
Thank you.

My original tastes in music were quite pitiful. i loved rap and hiphop. when i turned 12, my friends started getting me into pop punk like relient k. I soon attended a concert of theirs and saw MxPx as well, pushing me into more punk. There, i also received a sampler CD that had the suicide machines in it. at first, i skipped their tracks because they screamed, but soon i loved them and listened to it all the time. This pushed me into the hardcore scene. From the Hardcore scene, i jumped into Metal with Haste the day and soon became submerged in that genre. i loved the pounding drums and the amazing guitars riffs that i had never heard any sort of style like that before.
with that, i would like this avatar for my own

Big80smullet has been an active member of the sputnik music/mxtabs community for 4.5 years and his presence has been like a faux fireplace gas heater that gives out joy instead of heat. He has been very well behaved and made lots of good posts about interesting stuff and not many posts about uninteresting stuff. He made some good threads as well. He has tried 97 different beers and has the caps to prove it. He plays guitar really good too. like he shredz 64th notes at 280BPM. This one time he drank too much and hurt himself thats how he got that scar on his wrist not from being emo or anything. He works with children orphaned by the sea and he once nursed a baby kangaroo to adulthood after he ran its mother over by accident. He called it slappy. In conclusion Big80smullet is a pinacle of style and charm and is an all round good bloke. Having clearly established that fact could i please have this as an avatar.

Thanks for your honesty and whatnot, but how can you be an accomplice to a trolling effort but not be responsible for the negs? You can't be one without doing the other.
Angmar
04-29-2008, 08:10 PM
It was with a friend, normally we troll other sites but I helped him make the account and that one list, he looked around and figured out how to neg and stuff, all I was involved with was the list and account creation.
But they were all from your account, not his. If you guys were using the same computer, you didn't log off properly.
Angmar
04-29-2008, 08:22 PM
They weren't from Bobrocket? That's odd, my computer ****s up with the review site an logging in all the time so it's possible, but I didn't do the negs, he did, he informed me about all the people getting upset about them.
No, they were all from Angmar, which is why I said you can't have one without the other, heh. I never stood the point of trolling on the reviews site because the damage is reversed with a single click. All the time that people put into hitting 'no' in multiple reviews is wasted because I click once and everything reverts back.
Christian forums, I understand, because the hysteria is much more funny. Here, people get cranky, then everything gets fixed, and then people shut up. With the Christians, they start praying more.
Angmar
04-29-2008, 08:29 PM

I would like to request a new avatar, and seeing as I have written a few essays around just me I would like to combine how the site has helped me and what I've done for it as well.
Angmar began his activites back in the middle of 2006 when one day he noticed that MX tabs was shut down. Angmar always enjoyed reading reviews from the site MX tabs was run off of so he decided to join himself so he could get in on the fun. While he was active on the review site Angmar wrote several reviews but then soon saw the light that is the forums.
The forums welcomed Angmar, the users were all cool and he was eager to get away from the review site and try and merge into the forum community. While here Angmar has done his best to help others by contributing to whatever he is asked to or sees an opportunity. As well as making him a contributing member of this site the forums helped him greatly in music. Angmar went from listening to just general metal that everyone knew to many other underground bands, he also branched off into a lot of other music he hadn't considered before like folk, trip-hop and ambient.
Overall Angmar sees that this site is generally a great place to be and that is made possible by it's population of good users, Angmar also likes to believe he contributes a positive atmosphere to this forum as he tries to be kind and helpful to others. Angmar is always up for recommending someone new music or helping someone out with a site problem such as contacting the administrator for a name change.
In conclusion Angmar has been helped a lot by this site, and believes he does a good job of being a positive member of this forum, thus deserving a new big avatar to show his love for the music of Desiderii Marginis.

ITT nobody in here knows what copyright is.
Images, text, and music are copyrighted the moment they are in tangible form (Copyright Law of 1976). I.E., the pics and blog are copyrighted.
The only difference is that he didn't register his ****, which would give him the benefit of being able to sue for up to (I believe) $150,000 in damages in the event of violation and a bunch of other neat little benefits.
Just because you guys don't like him doesn't mean he's wrong, and just because he's a whiny little bitch doesn't mean that Trev's actions were legal.
Knowledge is a beatiful thing. Go to school or look some **** up before you spout off.

Enough.
Just to set things straight: enc, you put that photo and text in the public domain willingly. That makes it fair game for trolls, as unfair as that may seem. The best you can do is either ask Trev nicely, or ignore it whilst Trev gets bored with it.

If he put it on MySpace I think Rupert Murdoch owns the copyright. I'm pretty sure that's in the licensing agreement.

it used to be like that - someone pointed it out and called shenanigans and they removed it, i think.

Can I have this made into an avatar in honor of this brilliant band and often overlooked album? Resizing it to standard size makes it look horrid and unintelligible.

Heh, I guess I don't get the avatar then.
How about this for a suggestion; a thread perhaps a sticky that gives a list of albums, 10 perhaps from each genre/subgenre listing the best and most essential starting points for genres.

We had a trhead like tht ages and ages ago, I think Jondur of Legions wrote that.
It's a good idea.
I'm willing to work on (ambient) drone and funeral doom.

aye, i'd like to work on death metal/black metal - we could ask the bm thread, the dm thread etc to list their top 10 albums and then somehow make a top 10 list from that. i'd make one restriction of just one album per band, to give variety to the lists.

The CR thread did that a while back. A while back means... bout 2 years. hah.
But yeah, it's a pretty solid idea. Have the regs of each threads talk about it, then edit it into the first post.

I'd take part in that kind of thread as well.
Sounds good to me. I don't care if they're separate discussion threads for each genre (that might be preferred, incidentally) or if they're in the regular threads, just make sure that I get the lists so that I can edit them (or, better yet, have a new thread stickied at the top).

OK, great. I'd prefer a sticky thread rather than a list at the start of each thread - that could easily be ignored. I can't think right now how to organize this...perhaps open the respective threads to nominations and perhaps create a new thread for genres that don't have a thread in itself, e.g. heavy metal, then pool them together into a voting thread or something - or, any other suggestions?
Which genres? I'd say,
black metal
death metal
heavy metal
grind
thrash metal
doom metal
any others?
I'd like to stress though that it's not a matter of favorite albums in the genres, but rather the essential albums to get started with the genre. This should be good!

power metal?
Traditional metal?(stuff like Iron Maiden)
edit: I guess traditional could fall under heavy metal

classical metal = heavy metal....
power metal? sure....
I don't know about opening it up to rock - this forum is called rock and metal but really only metal is discussed here anyway

If we do not have "Rock" roundtable discussions then the only genre I will be able to weigh in on is metalcore!
Besides, rock still gets discussed here more than anywhere else (alt/indie doesnt count)
I would opt for a traditional metal tag over a classical or heavy metal tag, just because it would better set the stage for the other genres.
Rock will work as well, obviously. There are going to be albums that transcend genres (progressive - Pink Floyd compared to... Opeth? or something). We need to come up with the rock genres as well, though.
Glam will have to be one genre throw a bone at Spat Out Plath.
My suggestions for metal would go like this:
Traditional
Death
Black
Doom (I guess.)
Thrash
Power
Folk/Viking/Pirate/Ninja/Norse/Nordic/etc.
Grind
Nu/Alternative (Industrial could fit here as well I suppose)
For Rock, I would say:
Traditional
Classic
Jam
Hard/Glam
Grunge
Then, other genres:
Metalcore
Progressive (there should be a distinction between prog rock and prog metal)
---
These are only suggestions, not set in stone or anything.
Also, I want to know how you guys are going to score this in terms of a rubric.
e.g. Nominate five albums under a stratified scoring system:
1. 11 points
2. 7 points
3. 4 points
4. 2 points
5. 1 point
But if you want them weighted equally, that's fine as well, but I think having that stratification will help once more and more people contribute.
Also: while a dumb rule, there should be a specific postcount set (i.e., don't accept any posts that have < X posts [say 100, just for example) as well as no alternate accounts.
Folk/Viking metal and grind should be included too, but it sounds good otherwise.
The only problem I have is that there will inevitably be arguments over albums' placement in genres. For instance, I don't want to see Blackwater Park to be in both death, progressive, and traditional metal (this is just an example).
Also, are we doing the thread all in one, or are we breaking it up by each genre? I figure an all-in-one thing will be easy if people copypasta the form in the first post, which would look like this:
Traditional Metal (rank 1-5 in descending order)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Death Metal
1.
2.
3.
4.
5
Black Metal
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
. . . etc.
Discussion would wind up taking place in the thread, I suppose. It's going to be a monster thread, but if we keep to a very, very strict timetable, this can be squared away before mid-summer, I think.

The same arguments will undoubtedly emerge between the glam metal, trash metal and sleaze metal categories I fear. Perhaps I should just veto everyone else's votes just to be safe.

Yeah, that will happen no matter what. Maybe we can set what genre (for example) Opeth goes under.

Classic could be like old school and traditional could be sounds like the roots of a genre or something idk. They probably don't need separation.
Yeah, I meant for Classic Rock to be for... Classic Rock thread bands. The Who, The Eagles, Boston, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Kansas, and so on.
Traditional is a bad word for it, though, you're right - I just didn't want to say "Mainstream Rock" but that'll be less ambiguous.
