Ban Charming for good.
All he does is troll, start **** with me, post irrelevant comebacks and ruin threads. So I made a thread that was less than successful, no need for his ****. In the Black Metal thread he calls me a whiny bitch for saying a band had atrocious vocals, something that's a fairly common opinion on the group. I start a thread on the trend of Dimmu Borgir albums, which I admit was less than necessary, and he comes in with some garbage about my family.

true, but most of us try to stay on-topic now. its not always possible but its not that worse as in the past. we don't do off-topic-music, we do maybe off-topic and talk a little bit about kalmah and norther ... they are similar to bodom and on a side note -> without bodom there won't be nother, cuase alexander kuoappola (sp?) from bodom helped them to get "famous"; therefore its not THAT BIG off-topic. you know what i try to say?

/is in favor of trying to clean out that mentality again
Yeah, I agree. It was fun for awhile but it pretty much just happened that the threads were locked, new ones were created and within a week or two it was back to how it was. We'd have to go back to the drawing board to find a way to prevent that from happening, and I don't really have any ideas at this point.
Although I think the forum is moving along a bit better now than it was at the middle of this year.
3074326
12-27-2006, 04:56 PM
There'd be no way to do it without a huge amount of users hating it and killing the place's activity even more.
By activity I mean the amount of new threads made.
It's all Metallica's fault.
I can understand having official threads for extremely popular bands, but I have no idea why we have an official Dredg thread (for example). They're my favorite band and all, but honestly, do we need an official thread to get rid of the unbearable amount of Dredg threads that would be made every day if we didn't have the official thread..?
The reason that the first official thread was made was because there were a ridiculous amount of threads made every day for that artist. Now we just make them because a band doesn't already have an official thread.

One of the problems is that people still have the habit of going back 5 pages to bump that _____ thread that no one cares about anymore, because a year ago if you made a new one you would get about ten people saying "there is already a ______ thread use the search function noob "
That's not the whole problem, but I think discouraging people to bump inactive "official" threads would be a step in the right direction.
3074326
12-27-2006, 06:41 PM
Or close the official threads that become inactive for a couple days? Or close the ones that have no real discussion after a couple days.

Just leave it alone. Didn't we try closing all the threads that got big and became a community thread? Look at the CoB thread; the people in there cannot go 5 posts without changing the topic to something guitar-related, and if their thread was closed, you don't think someone'd just create another one a week later?
I don't see what the problem of this situation is. Do people actually care that threads get big and people talk about useless things? The banning of general talk in band threads will never work.
Now say that we do close all the big threads like last time, you don't think there's going to be a lot more complaining like before? If we do the same procedure as last time, we're going to end up with the same result.

Oh, sorry, dude. To be honest, the only thread I'd worry about is the CoB one.
Bartender
12-28-2006, 09:19 PM
Yeah, I do think people would complain and argue, and I do think they'd try to start up new ones. I still think getting rid of them makes for a better forum, though.

Oh, I realized why R&M is on a decline. We have become a very strong core group of like 15 people. We all have similar tastes that have pretty much grown with each other as we discover new stuff, so we can all talk for hours about music, etc.
The problem is that soon enough, we'll all grow out of the lifestyle of being able to sit on our arses all day and talk about music. Some people have done this already, hence the dwindling speed of posting around here. And since we're so tight knit(a relative term on the internet), it's really hard for new people to break into the culture and stuff. It's nearly 07 and I can't think of one good 06 user off the top of my head. Granted, I may be forgetting someone(sorry if I am, oh and enc, you don't count), but overwhelmingly, we're a very old group.
This is pretty much unfixable though. That's the problem.
My guess is that the forums will eventually enter into a whole new phase once the last of this generation has died off.
Kind of like moving from dinosaurs to people or something like that.

That depends on your view, I won't get into a huge argument here but you can't deny the immense knowledge that users like Freezing Moon and Dargon had of metal, even if you didn't like them. Perhaps those who don't care for metal never noticed anyway.
oohhh, I thought you mean "old" metal as in Black Sabbath and traditional metal and stuff.
I take back what I said.
Nostalgia
12-31-2006, 03:35 PM
I don't really think this forum is that bad. Of course some users left, and are still leaving, but we can't really do anything about that.
However, I will admit the BM thread was a lot better back when Dargon was around, but not because of his attitude or anything, just basically because he, like many others back then, knew what they were talking about and it was more based on the BM genre, not reccommendations.
I still don't have a big problem with it though.
I don't think it's bad either. It was for a little while, but it seems like the normal growth cycle of forums has not been present here.

Yeah, that's really true too. And do you guys really want a larage influx of new users joining R&M? I sure don't.
Dargon was at least entertaining and brought a change within R&M. The reason, I think, that I stopped posting is because everything is kind of looking the same. =/ I think an influx of new users could be nice and refreshing, you know?
Edit: New ideas, new thoughts, you know? Don't get me wrong, I love the community here although I don't participate in it as much, but when I read certain threads it's the same users over and over. MX may have a large amount of users, but honestly I see the same people posting in threads all of the time.
Edit #2: But, what do I know? I lurk and I still have my halloween avatar on, heh.

I don't know, really. The forums in general were smaller, I know that, but what was discussed under 'R&M' was more loosely defined back then so people who would now post in other forums about other kinds of music posted in here too (OrbDragon and Nacho, for example), and there was a much higher turnover of users than there is now.
Anyway, without avatars I paid a lot less attention to who was who.

Maybe this is because I enjoy so many types of music that I just like purely the music, not ideology and not the attitude, though sometimes I definitely agree with bands ideas and visions. I dunno, maybe it's just that I don't feel that I in anyway have to act typical for a certain type of musical genre fan. :)

It's good to see I'm not alone. I'm the same way. Although I do (obviously :p) enjoy the correlation between metal and alcohol, I don't feel the need to act in a way that people would expect from someone listening to the types of music I like.

I actually don't see a problem with that Opeth thread. He just wanted a quick answer, which he got. Usually in the 'official' Opeth thread you have to ask in the middle of some random discussion about why Ghost Reveries sucks and/or why people prefer old Opeth and/or why Axenrot sucks and/or why he doesnt.

01-18-2007, 11:15 AM
I believe the mods now allow little recommendation threads like that, simply because they're usually closed after the guy gets his answer. Plus, it's not really a huge deal because he can get his answer there instead of going to the Opeth thread where there's already a lot of backed up discussion.
