I'm trying to get the posting back on subject and you refuse (in your own thread )
Look at it this way.
If I get banned, I make a new account. Then get flamed. Then start flame wars. Is that good? no.
If I make one joke/flame, is it really that smart to get me fired up?
Look at my past posting. (This isn't a threat) I'm just pointing out a pattern. (really goes for anyone)
you have ****ty, tasteless jokes they should atleast be funny.

I'd like to ask that DV's "custom title" is removed. It's for the sole purpose of trying set me off.

User title is sarcastic. Everyone knows who I am by now.
My location isn't directed at any one individual.
That's the difference.

Eh. My understanding is that it's directed towards Drunken Viking.
Eh. My understanding is that it's directed towards Drunken Viking.
That's your opinion. It doesn't name any exact user, that's the difference.
Drunken Viking's title is exacted directed at me.
Nothing can justify the means of your location. It should be removed, and you know it should.
Your avatar is graphically violent. I'm terrified.
Just because it's not pointed at an individual that creates it right? You've been warned about it, you know that you should stop doing this stuff. I find your avatar and user title fine, but your location is just taking it too far. Your views are your views, and not all of MX should have to be seeing that.
You didn't answer my statement though. Your avatar isn't exactly "kiddie friendly". So?

There's far more too it.
1. It's a gimmick account (Ask SilentScream who it is). I've forgotten.
2. He's low level trolling in R&M, but more so thread spawning & spam/trolling in the guitar forum.

It's just the main place of discussion for a band. Instead of ten small threads.
For example,
We have one Metallica thread. Everything Metallica goes there.

I think you misunderstood my question, so lemme rephrase it: how does any thread on a band eventually become the official thread? i know there are zillions of little threads flaoting around, but how do the mods choose (if that;s what they do) which one will be the *official* one for that band?

Survival of the fittest. If it keeps up on the first page and people keep on using the given thread to discuss a band it just becomes the accepted 'official' thread. It's evolution in action.
Only a Mod can deem it "the official w/e thread"
Yeah, it's true it used to be that only mods could create 'official' threads but they were done away with by renaming them.
Nostalgia

We don't have OFFICIAL tags anymore. A user can create a thread on a certain band, and if it's popular, it basically becomes the official one. A lot of the time they just flop.
But it is pretty obvious when a thread becomes the band's official one.

Indeed. I might start an R&M album swap. It'd be weekly. It'd be a AIM chat, if we had enough people, it'd be great. If anyone likes the idea for this weekend, post.
This is under, "asking questions, making suggestions"
Question:
How does a band thread eventually become the "official" one?
There's no such thing as official threads, but you'll notice that the rules state that creating a thread when one already exists is a no-no. So, in reality, there is no real difference between an "official" thread and a fairly new one. It's just that the more popular bands tend to have the bigger threads.
Notice that neither of those were related to R&M.

The fear of discussing tired topics in the official band threads has prevented me once or twice from making a post in one of them. So basically, from an outsiders viewpoint, I believe there are far too many of the official band threads. I actually linked my friend to the R&M forum a few months ago, but he didn't join because he found it a daunting layout.
I mean, when I see posts like this (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12624212&postcount=19682), it does make me :-/ at the idea of all these official band threads.
I apologise if you get this type of suggestion all the time, I'm pretty darn certain I wouldn't be the first to bring this up.

about your view about MX: i sometimes feel the same. i post only in some "band threads" but in most, who i don't visit often i just don't post cause for the reason you mentioned and every topic has been discussed 1000x times (how you have read in the CoB thread - i think MRDuCran said it).
but on the other side there don't exit an "official"- band threads ... they are only at the top cause a lot of ppl listen to them and post in there. f.e. the NIN thread... we don't have many NIN-fans on this board here but from time to time it gets bumped.
but if i would be you, i would just post when you have a question or anything... just do it.

but if i would be you, i would just post when you have a question or anything... just do it. I can see why some bands such as Metallica, Tool etc would have their own thread. But many bands that I've heard of, but would not think of as a favourite of most, have their own thread. Just seems to me like each one has its own little community. Whether justified or not, I've never really felt that welcome in the many 'official' band threads.
To me it just feels like a limitation to discussion, where you have to keep close to the subject matter. Rather than letting each thread go off in its own direction.
Edit: See for example the DT thread where I tried to discuss the complexity of their music vs. the emotion. Had a nice litttle debate for half a page, but already its back to Octavarium and "it had some nice songs" type comments.
Yeah, we had this complaint a while back. I closed the old Pink Floyd thread, and Amit and Eccles posted a few times, saying it was good that the thread was smaller, since it was easier to jump into the conversation. However, they stopped posting pretty soon afterwards, and the net-effect wasn't really all that positive, or negative.
I think the status quo will remain having the established threads, simply for simplicity, but if people want to restart specific threads, they can. I know that the classic rock one was restarted by popular vote.
But yeah, I know a lot of threads don't have a problem with repeated discussion, so you shouldn't feel too nervous about getting a flame or two.

But yeah, I know a lot of threads don't have a problem with repeated discussion, so you shouldn't feel too nervous about getting a flame or two. Personally I like the A&I thread layout. Whereby there are a few always-on-the-front-page threads, then a whole bunch of threads that go on for 100-200 posts on differing topics. See look at their forum they've got interesting threads, that provide new discussion with each thread:
Music Quest ! How knowledgeable are you? (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=476527)
Describe bands obtusely (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=476103)
Pitchfork Music Festival (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=476563)
Alt-Indie Radio (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=475764)
So basically just a whole bunch of threads, with no specific band threads. Which is far from R&M, where most of the page consists of 1000+ post band threads and a few on-going 1st-page threads.
I find the A&I layout allows such a wide breadth of discussion, whereas the R&M format is limiting, and less appealing to newbies. In my mind, it harbours the same discussion over and over again. Whereas A&I evolves day-to-day. Not that A&I is perfect or anything. I also acknowledge that R&M's high traffic makes it very hard to maintain such an unformatted thread-layout.
Edit: And as further proof for my edit in my last post, check out the DT thread again. The small moment of 'new discussion' (sorry if that sounds arrogant), has gone back to insults and talk about how good Octavarium is.
I'm not saying that R&M should go back to the ***OFFICIAL*** threads, but having [band name] [insert lame title here] threads can be rather tedious. Sometimes the band isn't even in the title, and since some people don't use the search button, it makes things difficult. Further, if I searched for a band like Slipknot, the official Slipknot thread wouldn't be the first hit - it would more than likely be the community threads, or even other band threads, and then the Slipknot one.
Even if you search 'Slipknot,' their official thread doesn't even show up on the first results page.
I know that these major band threads are linked in the rules, but as many of you are aware, not many people read the rules. Plus, with all those links to all those series articles (only one or two of which are still active), there's not really a point in having all of those linked, either, is there?
Your words trouble me, young Daniel and Jim. I shall consult with the other Elders and bring back our decision. However, no matter what our verdict, it will still be a dark day for R&M.

Well, if you're going to make a poll, check at the very bottom below the textbox (where you're going to type in stuff that people will see in post #1). Click on "Add poll to this thread," type in the number of options, and then hit "Submit thread."
You will then be taken to a new screen in which you type your question and the options. Once you're finished, the poll will be added to the thread within a couple minutes.
Of course, I don't know if there's a SOAD thread running around already, but in any event that there's not, that's how you'd add a poll.

Well, I mean, how many times have you seen problems being reported in the CoB thread or the [insert band name thread] because somebody is disrupting their community by telling them that [said band] sucks? And it's almost a guarantee that every single thread with an "established" status does not have band-related discussion in every single post. I mean, it'd be quite difficult to make a thread and have that happen, but they're merely "Community Threads For Fans of [band]."

How practical would that be? We would just see more random threads pop up. I personally think things are fine here. As for the conversation thing, one normally does not jump into a verbal conversation that is happening between others and change the topic, so why should an internet conversation be any different.

"which rush album" Someone knowledgeable about rush could maybe give some insight to him in the rush thread
As for the conversation thing, one normally does not jump into a verbal conversation that is happening between others and change the topic, so why should an internet conversation be any different.
Okay, but what's your point? A conversation about music/bands/albums is much easier for a newcomer to jump into the fray than a more personal conversation that could go on AIM or MSN.
Example:
1: I didn't really like Octavarium a whole lot; I was expecting it to be a bit more heavy like Train of Thought but Petrucci is still pretty awesome.
2: Yeah, Petrucci is a beast, but I'd give that album a pretty solid 4/5.
1: Well, what songs do you like on there to give it a 4/5? I only like "These Walls" and the title track.
2: Those two are great, but my favorite track on there is "Panic Attack."
1: I don't like that song, man, the intro takes forever and is boring.
3: I actually like the intro, tbqh. Myung and Portnoy are also very good musicians, not just Petrucci. If you guys like him so much you should check out Suspended Animation.
1: Own it, love it, etc.
2: Yeah, that is an excellent album.
4: I think Petrucci is really overrated, though. Just because he went to some upper-tier music school all the fanboys here drool over him. I don't think he's as good as people hype him up to be.
1:  Tell me you didn't just say that!
2: Seriously man Petrucci is sweet, but whatev.
Versus everyday chatter. I don't feel like citing posts at this point, but when I was on the staff and I was looking in on some threads where there were problems going on, I would take care of those problems, only to find L&R/community thread/etc. type posting going on there.
The proposed conversation, while short (I'm not going to type paragraphs all the time for each person) shows two people in a music conversation, but with two more people being able to join in on the fray and post opinions without the other two getting all bent out of shape about it. In some of these band threads, that can't happen because discussion of the band isn't even really happening.
But this is just what I've seen. Maybe it's changed, I dunno.

It's kinda like we have a million OFFICIAL threads even though it doesn't say it in the title. I could see why some people and especially mods don't like it but I really don't mind. It's actually easier to keep talking about your favorite bands if you're part of that community, f.e. my Pain of Salvation thread, though it hasn't been around for a while and I'm not bumping it just because there hasn't been any news and noone else seems to want to talk about them. I think I'd be very welcoming to all talk of the band and especially new users but it just seems like noone is flaming them.
The only thread that really annoys me is the Wintersun thread where they don't talk about Wintersun, just GP5. I think the only way to get rid of it would be to create a new Wintersun thread, where there is no community yet and new users could have a chance. Plus, there would be actual discussion.
So maybe what we're saying is we need to break up the individual communities?
Well, like I said, I did close the Pink Floyd thread and start a new one, and it was only a few weeks before the status quo returned.
Moses
06-17-2006, 11:59 AM
Yeah, but atleast it was discussion on Pink Floyd right? All they talk about in the Wintersun thread is their compositions they make on GP4.
If it wasn't discussion on Pink Floyd then I feel stupid.
Either way this is just my complaint on the Wintersun thread, which is somewhat related to the problem as a whole.
Nostalgia
06-17-2006, 12:28 PM
Well, when threads start extending, it's only natural that they get off-topic. I don't really go into the Wintersun thread a lot, so I don't really know how bad it is. But I guess the Slayer thread is like that, but we usually stick to Slayer's new album, songs, or mechandise, so we basically stay on topic.
I don't think we should have those corny thread title names, they don't really serve a purpose. It was funny when we had a couple, but now every single thread has that.
I guess you could close a lot of the threads that you guys see having the most problems, but I don't really see it making a huge change on the matter of discussion. Just like Riva said, he already close the Pink Floyd thread, then I guess it was just right back to the regulars posting. But honestly, there isn't a lot we can do to prevent that.
Moses
06-17-2006, 12:38 PM
Maybe cause it's we have so many regulars. I remember when I first joined there weren't that many recognizable users aside from Steerpike, Riva, Antihero314584728 (Jom gave me the new Mudvayne in the beginning, thx jom), the mods at the time, and very few others.
Personally, in terms of "productive" discussion, it just can't happen in specific band threads, especially in one wherein the band is not making a new album, or is in some cases nonexistant. Eventually, the conversation runs dry. And once the communites set in, it is harder for new people to penetrate them, because of the overwhelming size of the thread.
The threads that do, in my mind, get genuinly good discussion are those that are genre threads. For example, I've found many new bands and have had some good conversation about bands in the Progressive Rock thread, the Post Rock thread, etc. I think having large threads on a broad topic opens it up to much more opportunity for ongoing discussion.
But, to be fair, those people that are within one of the "band thread communites" really enjoy those. So I wouldn't think that taking them away would be a good idea. I think we should start re-emplementing some old proccesses like Featured Artists and Featured Genres to get the ball rolling on inciting new, and often-times transient discussion, rather than what the huge, year-old "OFFICIAL" threads churn out.

What I meant was, the problem is how to get rid of them, now that they exist and have existed.
Close the threads and let's start making individual threads again.
Would that work, though? That's the problem. We could close all the non-official Official threads with the stupid names, and go back to the old rule of just "don't make a thread on a topic if such a thread already exists". But then a thread on, for example, Children of Bodom would be started, and people would be so used to posting in the way they currently do in the band threads that the new, normal, non-band threads would essentially just be restarts of what we have now. We can't just say "no threads on bands X, Y and Z", because that's just stupid, but the way things are now is pretty intolerable too. Any attempt to police the middle ground would be very difficult first to decide upon, and then to enforce.

Fukk, why can't the rep go back to the days where I had like 3,000 points? :( Instead I now have 39. :'(
You mean back in the old days, the first time around? The whole forum had stars and a lot of people in RM had like 10k.

I believe once a person gets 1,000 rep points, they have the ability to hand reputation out.
You only get rep points if a moderator or a person with enough points see you doing something helpful or starting a creative, good thread.

Someone else will give you a positive rep, if you make a good post (translation: post that they like).

People with over 1000 rep give it to you when they deem it fit. They give it through the little check and x button under your location.

I want my old rep of 30 000 back, not this paltry 3000!
Also, it appears that the old guidelines regarding rep are in place, again. Let's keep a tight lid on those rep parties, hey?

What exacly were those rep parties I saw some people mention ?
Nostalgia
06-21-2006, 10:09 AM
I wasn't invovled in any, but I'm guessing it was just when a lot of people grouped together, found reasons to rep eachother, and just...did it a lot.

Oh, ok then. One last thing, what's the Elite under several people's usernames ?
Nostalgia

I believe after you get 3,000 rep points, you get that under your username. After you get 1,000, you have the ability to give reputation out.

If everyone can give out rep, won't this just turn back to the same old circle-jerk debacle that we had the first time around?
Nostalgia
06-21-2006, 04:47 PM
That's what will probably happen, then they'll just make it so only people with a certain amount of points can give out rep.

Yea but we've already done this before, that's what confuses me. This is back to the way rep was when it was first introduced. Then when it got out of hand, we got rid of it, then later it was brought back where only mods and users with stars could rep. But eventually that was scratched too.
No we seem to be back to square one. I don't mind rep (actually I like having it around) but I'm just confused as to why it's back now when it was scratched twice already.
Take away the rep system!

I'm just gonna point out some negative rep I've gotten from high_voltage_AC/DC
you're gay.
That's why the rep system doesn't work. Little dickheads who suddenly think they're something special and elite will negatively rep somebody for not having the same tastes as them and telling them they don't have the same tastes.

I could care less as well, I'm just pointing out that it's completely pointless because it will be abused by the opinionated and will never reflect the actual merit of a user's posts.
