why is the you send it thread close?!?!
mx, the administrator of this site, decided that filesharing was not something he wanted to promote on this site. As musicianforums.com is his domain, it was his call.
Just as a sidenote, as I understand it, the internet is under international law in most cases, except for the actions of an individual. Hence the reason some websites, etc ask you to sign an agreement that you are not violating your local laws. Hence I can legally make copies of music on a non-profit basis (for backup, etc) in Australia, and Neuro can upload music in Canada. However, what the people on the downloading end are doing could be illegal, and thus the sticky wicket is reached.
However, the RIAA has no right to shut down websites that are operating under international law. Unfortunately, I think they could get away with it since mx is in the US. But anyways, it was his call, and we should respect him for it.

well can you answer this question?? how come 123 and 1 smiley posts are illegal and they never get banned but i post 4 smileys and i get banned?
Argh! Stupid needs to be painful.
19. Don't post '123' or anything senseless like that. No one cares if you agree with the poster. If you have something to add then post. Posting 123 will be considered spam and you will be temp. banned.
22. When you create a thread make sure you put up an intelligent observation or opinion. Same with replying in a thread. Don't create a thread and say, "I love Nine Inch Nails!, Tell me what you think!". These threads waste space and invite spam. Post up why you like the band or anything relevant and intelligent that you think about them.
Can your tiny mind extrapolate this information? Or does the word extrapolate have too many syllables for you?
It's the same thing man, sometimes people get banned for it, sometimes not.
It depends if a mod sees it, you cannot expect a mod to be on MX 24/7.
Drop the argument man, you're fighting for nothing.

I ban people who post 123's and smileys when I see them. If the other mods don't that is their choice. Now, your question is answered. This discussion is over. Don't post smilie responses, they are a waste of time and space.

No one's quite sure right now. NPC has brought the issue up in the mod forum so hopefully someone will keep us lowly users informed. I think the best plan if you have to upload an album/song for someone would be to give them the link over AIM/MSN. At least until we know for certain what MX's feelings on the subject are.

I agree that people who upload full albums should have their eyes cleaned with wire wool but single song uploads are a very good thing. Unless they're leaked songs there would never be any risk of illegal action etc.
Tell him to stop being a big girl. Downloading full albums is for flowery mincers, single song sharing is cooler than blue jeans, leather jacket and a well oiled quiff.
File sharing has corrupted this site, I won't lie, I did download stuff that people uploaded, the odd song or two, but I think in my entire internet-life that I've never downloaded a full album.
Good riddance maybe? I wouldn't want MX closed down due to personal greed, no suh.

Good ridance to the YSI thread to be honest, it was a nifty thread at first but it got way out of hand. If I ran a site as large as MX and illegal file sharing was going on at that high a rate I would probably put an end to it too. I am suprised it didn't cause many problems tbh.

Spam mostly.
I was always kind of uneasy about the YSI thread. I only posted in it maybe twice. I'm glad it's gone.
YSI links aren't always only used for filesharing, though: I use it most regularly to upload original music for criticism, and others use it for videos and stuff. If YSI is banned outright, that avenue will be lost.

If this is the matter, shouldnt the AIM thread be closed as well since it promotes the concept of illegal sharing?

I agree, single song uploads are indeed very good. They give you an idea of the band and keep you away from the tempting...p2p programs. Full album uploads on the other hand always made me uneasy.

worst thread i ever read
Oh, you guys are such pissers.
A majority of users in the R&M version of the thread was so they could listen to bands for the first time. A lot of the requests were just along the lines of "I request [band] because I haven't heard them before and people say they're good."
A couple songs would be uploaded, and that would be it.
Considering some P2P programs don't work on some computers (i.e. mine), and considering the P2P programs that DO work are riddled with spyware, the thread provided a safe, secure alternative to obtaining SINGLE SONGS. Why pre-emptively buy an album for just the single? Hell, why purchase an album without knowing what the hell is on it in the first place?
You can bullshit all you want about how you're glad it's gone because it was so drastically illegal when put in the same vein as an entire album, but really, I don't see why you'd waste your words.
Now grant it, I don't have any problems with Jeremy's decision, but I do have the right to be irritated with people who dismiss it as being something completely distasteful and vile after all the work I put into it, especially when compared to the other YSI threads.
EDIT: which brings me to another point: why do you (not aimed at any one person, but you [omg confusion lol lmao] get the idea) feel the need to voice your opinion on the matter, when you were never a part of what went on in there?
Jom is unemployed now :p

Don't you think you're exaggerating what people are saying? I personally was simply uneasy about the idea of the thread, which is directly relevant to my choice not to participate in it and thus my opinion of its absence. I don't think it's neccesarily immoral to do such a thing as sharing, I just knew that eventually it was going to grow to its current size (and keep in mind that while your YSI thread was very astute and extremely clear on the issue of album uploads, others elsewhere on the site weren't) and that it would pose a risk for the site and its continued existance. So while it is not "distasteful and vile" in my opinion, it was nevertheless risky.
When people would ask for "any songs by x band," often lots of people would, in their very helpful manners, upload not quite an album, but just lots of single songs. And I know that I personally, when I have downloaded a number of songs from a thread on a band, and I enjoy what I've got, sometimes I'm not quite inclined to go out and buy an album that'll just have repeat copies of songs I got via the internet, plus a few others that weren't. This defeats the purpose of the sharing: to promote a band and to ENCOURAGE people to spend money on them if they like the examples they hear. It seemed on my rare forays into the thread to lurk that that wasn't always going on. It's not your fault or anything, but that's just the way it is.
EDIT: As to the "airing morals after the fact," yeah, I guess that's what I'm doing to a degree. I was content with merely not participating before, and it was a successful thread. Had I challenged it in any way, even with the notion that it was merely a risky (not an immoral) idea, I surely would have been shut down. And to me it wasn't a big deal that that was the case, but now that we ARE talking about it, I simply felt like sharing my thoughts on the issue.

Jom may not be unemployed, but I am! Oh well, school starts next week so I'll be into all that stuff. On another note, I agree with all that Jom said, it served the valuable purpose of presenting people with samplers of music they hadn't heard before. It may have been strictly illegal but I bet that it led to quite a few cases where people went and bought an album based on what they'd heard. It's funny how people seem only to air their morals after the fact. But let's not turn this into a YSI debate, there's already one of those in every other forum on the board.
I think Jom, in particular, and everybody who put aside their own time to answer people's requests. It was a fantastic thread while it lasted.

When people would ask for "any songs by x band," often lots of people would, in their very helpful manners, upload not quite an album, but just lots of single songs.
Yeah, from multiple albums. So what?
And I know that I personally, when I have downloaded a number of songs from a thread on a band, and I enjoy what I've got, sometimes I'm not quite inclined to go out and buy an album that'll just have repeat copies of songs I got via the internet, plus a few others that weren't. Okay.
I'm just saying that I'm willing to bet that people went out and supported the artists by buying their albums. I can speak from experience: people have written me saying that they liked what they heard, went out to buy the album, and really dig the album. Ask Kage in regards to Memento. He'll back me up.
It seemed on my rare forays into the thread to lurk that that wasn't always going on.
omgz operative word in sentence highlighted for effect.
As to the "airing morals after the fact," yeah, I guess that's what I'm doing.
No problems there. Understand, though, that people wonder why you didn't bother "airing" while this travesty was taking place. Writing the below doesn't really say much:
Had I challenged it in any way, even with the notion that it was merely a risky (not an immoral) idea, I surely would have been shut down.
Probably. I don't think it would have stopped you from going on and on and on, though, so you can say that you put in your $.02. It's not like you've tried to stop yourself before.

I would just like to add that I bought 3 albums by bands that I had never even heard of before untill I went into the YSI thread. One of them being Arcturus who I had never heard before a mere 2 months ago, heard some in the YSI thread, and now they are one of my favorite bands and I am desperately seeking to find whatever I can of their catalogue. I think the YSI thread served it's purpose very well.

Please close this thread and ban this guy, he started a thread saying he was new and wanted some help for a begginer and he has almost 4000 posts now hes just spamming the thread uncontrolabley, and now he's trying to turn the thread into a ***official*** fast food thread, please a temp ban.
Best for you to report that in the Site forum's relevant thread. R&M has no jurisdiction over the Pit.

What happens in The Pit stays in The Pit. The mods there will take care of it.
Besides, it got closed, so I don't know why you're being so bent out of shape.

It's not a big deal, but posting stuff like that in a thread that should most likely be closed in the first place is just bumping it back up.
Or, maybe I'm just too pissed off from homework, :p.

Yeah, the omnibus thing is a result of the swear filter. I'd be more worried about it being purple :-\
Don't get so upset my bad threads in the Pit. They have their own little spammy world in there and that's the way they like. They get banned all the time, there's no point getting upset about it.

This thread has turned sooo joyous. Mindless Korn-bashing abounds and ruins a fairly decent topic. Close and/or ban offending users.

It's not the first time that someone has had a swastika avatar.
Personally I don't think it should matter.
Good afternoon guys
Quick question: does anyone have any opinions on a top 50 rock/metal pianists/keyboardists competition? Piano was very instrumental to rock in the 50's and 60's, prog bands thrived on keys and the keyboards are also prominent in many modern metal bands such as COB, Dream Theatre and a majority of black metal bands. I'd even like to suggest it as a top 100, but i don't think that people know enough keys players and pianists for this to happen.
So, yeh: opinions?

Great Idea, I think it would work well, I'm not sure about extending it to 100 though.
there are other polls to come first though, but when the time comes I'm sure it will be cool.

I thought it was mooted that a frontman poll and a drummer poll should come before this?

I want to ask for permission to make a thread about Swedish/Norway/Finland-Metal.
It should me like the Black Metal thread or the 'Any death heads here?' thread, where fans who like this scandinavian-music can discuss their bands and recommend.
maybe we can make a thread for each each state or all together... i don't know.
Is this a good idea or not? Can it be a good thread or will it die soon.... your suggestions/oppiníons?

A Scandinavian Metal thread you mean? though technically Finland isn't part of Scandinavia though I doubt many people will care.
I seem to remember a thread like that not too long ago, but I didn't fnd anything with my searches so make it. Just pack it with a decent bit of info to promote discussion. There seems to be a fair bit of interest in Scandinavian metal so the chances are that it'll last a while.
And you don't really need to ask for permission to make a thread, all you need to do is make sure that it doesn't violate any of the rules.
Close (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391002) , though I suspect they would like an answer at somepoint. Possibly not giving them one until they ask in here could be humerous.

I know. My point was that if call it 'The Scandinavian Metal' thread, an altogether catchier title by far, I'm sure few people will care about Finland not being part of Scandinavia.

Though we have a large thread concerning children of bodom, I'm asking approval for making a seperate thread mainly for a writeup, I would just post the writeup in the COBCH thread but I feel I would only get very few reply's. Do you think it would be possible to do this for imformative purposes? The reason I want to do it because COB is a very inportant/respected band In R&M so I would want to put out a little information on them, and the writeup would be good, I promose, would it be possible to recive approval?
