This a good idea, but I think what Chris was trying to say is that the front page is littered with OFFICIAL threads, and removing the smaller official threads wouldn't do much to help that. A good idea nonetheless. I think at this point, if an OFFICIAL thread has less than a certain number of posts, it should be un-officialized or something. Just an idea.

I honestly hate official threads. Yes, they clear out unwanted threads, but other than that, they are just a major negative to me. They are just bundles and bundles of what appears to be the same information over again, and when a new user comes to post because he's never heard about the band, it's "stfu newb, this has been covered millions of times, read the thread".

In addition to that, I never learn anything new about these official thread bands. If they have a new album coming out, or somebody dies, nobody heres about it. Why? These threads have regulars that read these threads. And that's all. Just people who post in there every day. And there aren't a whole lot of them; compared to the number of people that post daily in the R&M forum.

It's more of a whiney rant than something I think the forum should really do without, but I just thought I'd express my thoughts.

My suggestion though: Only make an official thread when a major album comes out (if we get a lot of threads about the band) And when things calm down, close it down.

Like St. Anger.

I agree. I like the official threads. I don't understand Mekk's complaint. If you're really interested in the bands that have official threads, which aren't that many, then you'd either: a) read the thread regularly, or b) know about a new album or big occurence from some other source and go into the official thread to talk about it.

RiceMonster
08-07-2005, 10:07 PM
I don't think we should get rid of official threads in general, but I'd say t here are too many. There are the bands that for sure need them (such as Tool, and Metallica), but there are others who we never a had a ridiculous amount of threads for (such as Megadeth and Black Sabbath).

Technically yes, but since it is a private thing, the forums are not liable for damages. The reason the YSI thread is limited to single songs is because the forums are acting as a direct go-between. So, it is more of a reflection of the mods. Don't worry, the FBI aren't watching... Unless I summon them with the magic words: plastic firearm explosive

What you reported was something that happened in The Pit, NOT in R&M.

The R&M mods don't care about what goes on in The Pit, since they don't mod it.

He means that. You can't just sign up for a bunch of accounts and try to get those measly ten points transferred each time... or else everyone would sign up for 1,000 accounts and do what you're doing. That's abuse. I should be reporting you for trolling, but I'm not since you've been turning over a new leaf lately, but honestly: why are you so hostile with me? You deserve what you got coming to you after your actions.

And surely a former supermod knows how to quote correctly...

Riva

?? Abusing the rep system?? What on earth are you talking about?

You made a fake account, fizzles, which gave you an automatic rep point total of 10. You then wanted Jim to transfer those non-earned rep points to your IceBerg007 account, and delete the fizzles account.

I suppose the next step is to create another account, transfer the rep, and then delete said account, and on and on it goes.

And surely a former supermod knows how to quote correctly...

By the way, Ken, I wanted to reiterate that I wasn't trying to get you booted from R&M or anything... but when you went on holiday and with the two Euro mods gone for an undisclosed amount of time, Chris was left and R&M was getting pretty crazy since he can't be on all the time. We need mods like you who ban and don't take any **** from people... it's just I made that thread a bit pre-emptively, so I apologize if it looked like I was against you or something... because I absolutely was not. We're all appreciative of how you mod here, or else R&M would be even worse. I just wanted to see if there was any possibility of another local being added to help out, especially when the other guys are busy and doing things with their lives outside of MX.

So again, I wasn't trying to nail you or anything, SFK. Sorry if it looked that way. :)

My advice to anybody, even though most will never listen about illegal threads: Just don't post in them at all. No matter what. Even if a mod isn't online, if nobody posts in them, they will soon enough make their way down the front page and on to the second, and they will be forgotten.

Also, Iceburg or whomever is so concerned about the rep thing, quit spammin up this thread about it, it doesnt matter. Continue and Im going to -rep you for it.

Something else, I am going to just edit inside of the posts you guys post up about problem threads instead of actually creating a new post to save space in this thread.

ADDITIONALLY, I am playing a show tonight so I won't be on at all. Look for DBJ if none of the other R&M mods are on tonight and you guys have problems. If it is small problems don't bug him, I'll get em tomm. morning when I get out of bed.

My suggestion about user band series, someone make a seperate thread to archive all of them. Then link that thread in the rules. That will save a lot of room in the rules thread.

I think a better idea would be to make a new post in the R&M Rules thread, and have one of the mods edit in the links that way.

I would prefer a seperate thread that will provide further details on each series. For example what is each series about, what day they are usually posted or anything else the authors might want to say.

However, since the mods arent fod of more stickies a seperate post will be ok. The point is though that many people dont know that in the rules thread there are other things besides the rules so they dont check it out.

Mods is there any way we could make a new YSI thread where we can trade full albums instead of the one there is now where you can only do a couple songs

it would help out a lot more people

also it wouldn't have to be official-so if i made one, would it be closed?

YES.

IF YOU CANNOT COMPREHEND THE REASONS, PLEASE GO BASH YOUR HEAD ON A BRICK WALL AS MANY TIMES AS YOU CAN AND AS HARD AS YOU CAN UNTIL YOU EITHER A) GO UNCONSCIOUS OR B) UNDERSTAND THE RULES. Both Jom and King hit the nail right on the head. Both of these guys are ROCK SOLID members of the R&M community, if myself or 8675309 are not available you should really listen to these guys, they know what they are talking about.

I don't like full album YSI, I think its wrong. I myself have only participated in probably 10 YSI's and that was 1 or 2 songs from other users from bands whom I was interested in. 1 of the bands, The Mars Volta, I went and bought their cd, the others were not my cup of tea so I didn't.

I would actually like to get rid of ALL of the full album YSI that is being done on MX, I think its wrong. If you want an idea of what someones music sounds like then get a track or two from a fan who is knowledgable of the bands music and can give you solid direction. If you don't like the music then you and the band that created the music are really not out anything. If you do like the music then go buy the cd. You and the band both benefit from this situation.

Jenny!

Also, can we please do something about all the Ozzfest threads that pop up every year? I don't think I could count all the threads on my fingers and toes, including my mutated 7-toed left foot (I kid). Especially considering about 1/2 of MX is non-North American, it kind of means that we get a lot of cluttering of threads we aren't interested in.

In addition, for every detailed, sometimes irreverant review from an intelligent user, we get "OMG OZZFEST ROX liek BOOTLEGS 4 ME plz!" in abundance. Just create a seasonal Ozzfest General Discussion thread for people. It won't be illegal to post outside of it, but at least we have something to link people to. Of course, this is my afternoon rant, so it pays not to listen to me. :)

Excellent idea, ++rep for you!! I'll create it, and you guys can fall back on this post to show people that we do want them to post in the thread. If people blatantly disregard the thread after you show them this post then I'll temp. ban them.

I additionally plan to create an official "DimeBag" thread when the anniversary of the tragedy approaches, I'd like an intelligent fan of Dimebags to begin the thread and do a biography and picture tribute so you guys kinda keep this in the back of your mind and be thinking of someone to write it. I'll host the pictures they want to use in the article and I think we should decide on an official contribution fund (VH1's Memorial fund or something similiar) for all of MX to send donation to if anyone wishes to.

SonorKen

If people are curious as to why and who I ++rep, check out Riva's, Jom's, Kingofdude's, Dr. Jake Destructo's, Six Foot Revolver's, and Iai's recent actions through-out R&M. These are examples of some of the GREAT members of the R&M community.

If your interested in having +rep, having stars under your name, being able to positively and negatively rep other forum members, and want to generally be a great member of the R&M community then keep an eye on these guys and how they use the forum.

These are just a VERY SELECT FEW members of the community that I mentioned. I mentioned these because these are the most recent people I repped. There are literally HUNDREDS of members of this community that are great users and whom help out and contribute non-stop that all deserve rep daily. I do intend to +rep all of you as time permits!

Good job people!

I'd like the make a suggestion concerning ***OFFICIAL*** threads. I'm not sure how well this would work, but why not unofficialize all OFFICIAL threads with less than, say 5,000 or 4,000 posts. I know that these aren't the main OFFICIAL threads that are usually on the front page, but I think if someone changed the name of these threads, it wouldn't be as cluttered. It's worth a try, I guess.

Well, changing the title isn't really solving the problem most people complain about. The rules state that you shouldn't post outside of a thread that already exists on a topic.

My pet peeve is people like Big-bird who always post outside the PF thread. Since that thread is already ***Official*** it won't change posting behaviour if we edit the name.

However, whatever you guys wish to do is fine by me, as long as you keep the PF thread open. :-*

Riva- I didn't mean delete the existing threads and start over. I just meant change the names of the smaller ones. The PF one is quite large, compared to say, the Slipknot and Dream Theater ones.

Ken- There are succesful band threads that aren't official, like the Porcupine Tree, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, and System of a Down threads, and there are about the same(if not less in some cases)number of threads created about those bands. I think we should at least give it a week trial on some of the threads. If you would like, I'll go through the rules threads and grab links to all the officials with less than a X number of posts. Just give me a number, and I'll get you the links. :)

If it's related to A7X it's not really illegal to post a drum tab in there. Just like people often post guitar tabs in the Gilmour thread.

Jeez, FTR, you are way out of line reporting him. He asked a fairly on-topic question about drumming, and then asked a question about playing a drum part. I just read the past 4 pages of that thread, and you are way too hypocritical, e.g. Calling someone a spammer for a double post, while making a double post yourself. If someone is annoying you, you can't request a ban for a decidedly borderline infringement.
