That smiley should either be removed, or people should have to earn the right to use it.
Even if/when people earned the right to use it, it would still be abused.

The usual answer is that all those threads get archived in my MNM threads, which in turn get archived in the rules section. However, with all these threads, it would be extremely difficult for the mods to catch all of them...

Just a reminder for any mods online. As to the stickying of my thread, I truly think that if it could simply be put in the forefront to be read, it would be an insanely relevant and informative source for the users of the forum. It's admittedly not the best conversation starter but it's more to be used as a referential thing, and I think users would get a lot out of it. :)
EDIT: It'll be a weekly thing, hopefully. So if that creates problems (like unstickying and stickying a new thread each week) let me know and I'll adjust accordingly. I hope a mod can think my request is ok, even so.

Believe me, if it is reported once, the mods will realize it's a problem decide if they want to give it a bit, or just close it on the spot. re-reporting it serves little purpose. Don't do so unless you feel there is a praticular user, or group of users that should be banned for actions in that thread.

Okay, I understand now. Thanks for the lesson.
Okay guys, my modern rock band competition. I got some questions for the regulars and the mods. Essentially -
- How do we define 'modern'?
- How do we define 'rock'?
- Do we limit it to bands, or are solo artists included?
I personally think 'rock' should be as broad as possible. It will include metal, of course. But what about punk and pop-punk? I say, allow them. The very fact that this is the rock & metal forum will mean we don't get over-run. And if we define it from the start as being very broad, it'll stop arguments (like Sum 41 - wasn't their last album hard rock rather than pop-punk?) Either this, or we put questionable bands up for debate after the votes are counted, and we can see who will replace them.
Secondly, I think 'modern' should be defined by the debut album, and the cut-off point should be 1988. This includes The Pixies (although they released an EP in '87), Nirvana, Soundgarden, Tori Amos (!), and Fugazi, though it'll exclude a few potential hotpoints (U2, Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica). To be blunt, as the list is almost certainly going to feature at least 3 grunge bands, Soundgarden and The Pixies should be included as a 'starting point' of sorts for a lot of modern rock. We could also say '85 and define modern as 'the last 20 years'. Opinions?
And as for solo artists, for me that's a no-brainer. It must be a yes.
brettberry

Go ahead and do it Iai you have my support, this could get interesting :)
Dr. Jake Destructo
07-13-2005, 08:10 PM
Modern- The youngest band to be included in the CR competition was Guns n Roses, I think, so if you know at what point they emerged, you shall find your cut off year. 1985 sounds good though
Rock- Metal already had their top 100. :fistshake: I don't think punk and pop punk should be included b/c they have their own forums. I doubt Sum 41 would be voted into the top 100 anyways, but since I realize it was an example, I will say that if a band has any rock material whatsoever, they should be in the competition.
Solo- /votes yes
Are you going to have a voting thread, or are you going to choose the top 100 your self? I think you should have a voting thread, but if you already have a list, go ahead and use it.
Oh, I'm not sure if U2 was in the CR competition, but if they weren't they should be in this one, as they're sound is very modern rock.
Prioritie number one for me is no metal though. I konw there will be some overlap as to whether a band is rock or metal, but we can solve this problem by figuring out if the band was in the metal competition that PIGS ran, and if they weren't in the competition, then they should be in.
Oh man, I forgot about the top 100 metal bands! Great point. Also, thanks for the GnR info - they debuted in 1987, which is partly why I picked '88. Now I have a concrete, unarguable reason. :D Although, U2 debuted long before GnR, so that point is iffy.

Why dont you find a year that U2 was most popular and use that?
Because then you could start twisting things horribly. Like, claiming Jethro Tull are a modern rock band because they won a Grammy in the late 80s. Or Aerosmith are a modern rock band, because I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing is their biggest hit.
Though, they were most popular with The Joshua Tree, which - off the top of my head - was '86. Maybe '87. If it was '86, they couldn't even sneak in that way.

Artists like Sonic Youth and Flaming Lips debuted in the early 80's...what about them?
Dr. Jake Destructo

I think it should be artists that sound modern. I know this will complicate things, but yeah, that's really not that fair to exlude those bands. :-/

I think mods should start banning people that post in illegal threads. I think there should only be one person to post in there, and thats to direct the person where to go, or to tell them not to post stuff like that.
Posting in illegal threads just bumps them (duh), and then causes stupider things to happen in the thread. Just give a warning or something to let people know.

I was kicked out of where i was living with nothing but my guitar and amp (it was all i could grab) and the girl i was living with pawned all of my equipment so i cannot record anthing on my own. I only have one way to enter and that is to upload one of our songs. is this okay?

That's probably something that should just be posted in the thread with the rules. Not having it stuck would kind of defeat the purpose of it.
You can gather whatever you were going to put in the thread and I'll put the links in the rules, though. As long as they're deserving, obviously.

Oh, and to whoever is going to put this in the rules- I made it easier by hyperllinking so you didn't have to, so just reply to this, then copy paste all of the text minus this. It's probably obvious, but yeah, just felt like clarifying.

Alright, what would you guys say to me doing a top 100 vocalists poll after Iai's next poll?

Mxican/Six Foot Revolver has dibs on the poll after Iai. After that I think it's open though.

Yeah, the polls take forever to run their full course. I don't know what MXican's will be about, but I know he told me that he would be doing one. But yeah, Mathias, I wouldn't start making too solid of plans yet because it will probably be a good 4-6 months before you get any oppurtunity

I just thought that since threads about bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains always seem to go down like a lead balloon then the combined might of every single grunge band might make a realistic thread, you're probably right but surely there are enough Tool fans on this site to feed a small army of carniverous penguins.....?
:upset: True that. I had a legit thread for AIC and it failed miserably. It had uploads, a biography, discography, etc...

Fair enough.
Iai's is modern rock right? And there has been some talk for a while about a drummers poll, before the bassists poll.
Bartender didn't mention MXican's poll over in the Site forum where I asked first, oh well, I'll still keep it in mind as the next polls take their course.
Dr. Jake Destructo
07-16-2005, 11:10 PM
Yes, Iai's is modern rock. Noone has mentioned running a drummers poll, and I'm not sure what MXican's is going to be on, or if he still plans on running one. I'll check with him when I talk to him next.

If it's been idle for over two days it'll be way down in the thread list so he wouldnt've noticed it.
Adimitedly he could have used the search feature, but since your threads aren't identical maybe he felt that making his own thread, tailored to suit his own needs specifically, would be a much better idea. Maybe he did use the search and found your thread but didn't want to reply in it because it would be bumping an oldish thread and/or ddn't want to hi-jack your thread.

maybe u could seperate the metal and rock threads. i love classic rock bands and pretty much hate metal (many exceptions).
They are different enough to support seperate forums and they would still be the first and second most popular forums right? just a thought i'd mention it. I know that'd be a huge change and there'd be a few problems with distinguishing some bands.

Not going to happen.
It has been suggested all to many times before and has been shot down equally amount of times as well.
It will never happen, and if you don't like it, leave. And just because some noob with under 10 posts asks to have something done out of personal preference which needs an admin to do so will frankly never happen and we will laugh at you.
Stick to the rock threads, and metal heads will stick to the metal threads, simple as that? Right? I would hope so. Also if you complain about to many metal threads, go and make a informative and great thread about a certain rock band, not just some one line P.O.S. thread with nothing to talk about other then "LOL I THINK THEY R TEH SUX LOLOLOL MAH OPINION!" crap.
Thank you, have a good day.

Actually, I like most rock and metal bands. And there are a lot of cross-overs. You say you like Classic rock; should we then seperate the Classic and Modern rock threads? They are different enough as well.
Also, the popularity of R&M is based on both genres being together. On their own, each would be less popular that A&I, or Punk, I wager. And besides, Rock and Metal are the two most closely related genres on MX. We have a great community, and most fans of either genre treat each other with respect. In addition, many of us are fans of both.
So, the answer is most likely no. If you dislike metal, avoid the metal threads. That's about the nicest answer you'll get.
Dr. Jake Destructo

Well, due to the fact that R&M are one forum, I have become to enjoy many metal bands, so i actually like the fact that they are together. :-D And like Bobo said, if you don't like metal, just stick to the CR threads.
What bands do wish hadn't broken up? (]http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=368081)
Massively overdone.

Rock and Metal bands have lots of the same fans, and most fans of both types of music get along. Where as a forum like Metal/Emo would probably be a mad-house. It's nice having the two under one roof.

If you could close this and do something about the threadstarter I would greatly appreciate it (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=368080).

Pass the word around for everyone to refresh their memory with the rules. People are starting to post up TONS of spam. Single Smilies, 123, best this, worse that, all of those types of threads are against the rules.
Read em people, tell people to read em.

I'm with you on single smiley posts, 123s, "goodbye" posts in the community thread, etc, but I don't see what you mean by the thread types bit. It's only new users and actual trolls (of which there are few) who make threads of the Best, Top 10, Dream Band (and so on) kind - none of the regulars make threads like that because they know they'll be closed or deleted and maybe banned - and we can't really request that people read the rules before we're aware of them being here.

Why was that video upload thread a bad idea?
It wasn't great... But it wasn't horrible.

Cus at least with the YSI stuff you kinda knew each other and could trust people. To blindly post links all over the net is a bad idea for people to go and follow.
Why did my video upload thread get closed?
