Featured Genres

Like the Other's forum, I'd like to try featured genres in Rock & Metal. There are many, many sub genres of both rock and metal and would be interesting to have detailed descriptions of those genres. I am hopin for fairly specific genres as well. Not just "Black Metal" but "Symphonic Black Metal" instead.

First thing we need though is for this to be cleared by the mods.

Any input for how this should work would be greatly appreciated.

Also, compiling a list of genres might be helpful because it could lead to a checklist one could use as a reference.

ADDITION:
Manuscript Replica and I are both willing to help make this a reality and it seems we have Bartender's blessing.

Alright, I've got rules in there now.
Featured Genre Rules
- All featured Genre’s must be dibbed according to the dibbing rules
o In order to dibs one must send an email to both Manuscript Replica (sexual_paul_rees@hotmail.com) and Dancin’ Man (peter.mchugh@gmail.com) containing your user name and genre you will be featuring.
o You will receive a reply email stating that you did or did not win the dibs (first come first serve of qualified dibs). Upon receiving that Email you will have one week to complete and post your feature or risk losing your dibs. In the event of a missed dib, there will be another round of dibbing in which the user who failed to post a feature will be excluded.
o A qualified dib is one that is made by a registered forum user and a genre that has not already been covered (the genre list will show what has and has not been featured). If you feel that the genre you have dibbed is a valid rock or metal sub-genre but not represented on the genre list, your dibs will be evaluated and most likely accepted, assuming the genre was appropriate.

- Featured Genres should include but are not limited to
o History of the genre
o Important and contributing bands and artists
o Detailed description of genre
o If you have further questions, ask someone and also use other Featured Genres as a reference.

Pointless thread.

Regarding that thread... I'm probably going to make myself a little unpopular for saying this... but I really question banning that guy.

Yes, he posted that thread in a truly assinine fashion. But SonorKen, you said you banned him for advertising. If that's the case, a lot of us should have been banned a while ago. Give_me_beer posts new threads every now and again linking us to the websites of various bands that might be going under our radar. Just the other day, I posted a thread providing information and links to three prog bands.

I'm just unsure of the logic here.

Okay, I've never done this before, but there's a first time for everything. Would it be possible to contact MX and have him IP ban DroneMaster?

The little flame war with this guy started out amusing, but Bartender called for a ceasefire so I put him on my ignore list. Now he's on a ten-day ban and keeps coming back with new accounts to spam the thread and continue trash-talking me. I feel like I'm being stalked and I'm getting sick of clicking the ignore button.

Normally, I'd just continue ignoring him, but no matter how many times he gets banned, he comes back with a new account to continue aggravating me or whoever else told him he's being a troll. It's obvious this guy has absolutely no interest in doing anything constructive around here, he's just an immature brat who harasses anyone who talks back to him.

Again, I wouldn't normally do this, but please can we IP ban him? You can see all of his various dummy accounts and personal attacks in the metal genres thread started by LegionsofMarduk.

Bartender
03-01-2005, 06:15 PM

The links to these forums from MX tabs don't work.

Here's an example: the link for "Well Educated Musicians" is "http://www.musicianforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=308714&styleid=17", but it should be "http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=308714&styleid=17"

All the links lack "forums/" so whenever I click them Internet Explorer flips out.

I know this forum is generally about problems and suggestions for R&M forums, but I did not know where else to report this.

Thanks.

It really is more of a circle jerk than anything. Although it is kinda neat to have 4 stars, almost every regular has them by now, so it is next to useless in identifying good users.

SonorKen
03-01-2005, 09:33 PM
yea, the initial idea was to reward good users, now it is a popularity contest. I would have liked to have seen the rep be mod assigned or something maybe.

I think the removal of rep will inprove the general quality of the forum. Postcount will matter more like it used to, but it was better that way.

Permanent Solution
03-01-2005, 10:19 PM
I still have a high postcount, so sounds good ;)

I think mods-only rep would have been a better system, but no system is perfect, it got abused here so, it's pretty meaningless.

Jason here said all my thoughts.

Pretty pointless if every member has stars, is it not?

SonorKen
03-01-2005, 10:26 PM
yea, I agree. I think if only moderators could assign rep it may have worked. That way only people who actually DO good things are the ones rewarded.

Permanent Solution
03-01-2005, 10:49 PM
Of course the problem there being mods aren't omniscient and so some good users would be overlooked, but, like I said, there's no perfect way.

Bartender
03-01-2005, 10:56 PM
Alternatively, do the opposite, and make it even less serious. It'll never be taken seriously, just because no system ever will, and I think most people just think of it as a bit of fun anyway.

SonorKen
03-01-2005, 11:07 PM
Of course the problem there being mods aren't omniscient and so some good users would be overlooked, but, like I said, there's no perfect way.
well, I agree with that. But, the mods would have to step up and really try to notice all the good users, not just the ones who post up problem links and users. A good example would be someone like PIGS. I don't remember him reporting any bad users or posters, that doesnt make him a bad user, his posts are informative, he helps out by starting the music sharing program, and all in all is a good guy. I would positvely rep him as well as the majority of you guys.

munky_magik
03-02-2005, 03:21 AM
The only thing rep is useful for is as a kind of PM service, so I wouldn't mind seeing it stay for that. Other than that it's pretty useless.

Josh
03-02-2005, 06:56 AM
the thing about rep is that if someone says something in a thread a lot of people dont like, they derep simply because they can, and that person gets negged badly because of their own opinion. but please keep rep for a while.....until i have 1000 posts, then i get stars :thumb: lol
EDIT:
and due to all the threads being needlessly created, could it not be sorted that you can't create threads until you have a certain post count, rather than just having to wait 24 hours after registering to be able to post? i would have said this in HeavyRiva's thread about making threads, but i wanted to make sure mods would see it.

munky_magik
03-02-2005, 07:37 AM
The thing is, if you have requirments before you can post a thread then you're just going to get an awful lot of spam posts from people who just want to post threads.
Even then, you'll still get people who post bad threads.

I think that's an awseome idea - I haven't been posting long, but I've been reading this forum for a while, and I soon got sick of the idots signing up just to post one useless thread, which this would certainly cut down on. The only problem is that people might just spam up the boards to bump up their post count, then we'd be stuck with spam and rubbish threads.

Can I suggest unstickying Riva's competition results now? Every post in there seems to be spam now, and we have too many stickies now, anyway...

Yeah, I remarked to Bartender it was all spam now. He had other things on his mind though... :-/

Much obliged.

And no I did not have a previous name here. What makes you think that?

For some reason I remember when you registered, and you seemed like you had much knowledge of how this forum worked. I was just curious.

Haha, that's some good stuff.

I'm back to banning rule breakers without warning. Reading the rules should be enough of a warning. We need to get this place back to where it was when we were all first modded. :)

Already closed/banned.

Haha, Ken brought it up in the Mod forum. I know I've been slacking lately when it comes to penalizing rule breakers. No more of that.

Just a question

How come I only have three stars now??

I'm sure it's just something done with the ratings, but just wondering.

Apparently the star requirements changed when Jeremy edited the system a few minutes ago.

There's gotta be a better way to recognize the genuinely helpful people on the forums. Some people I'd like to award by some other means than telling them so by posting saying "You're so cool!"

SonorKen
03-04-2005, 12:07 AM
Well, one of the ideas is to lower the amount of rep needed to obtain stars and then only let moderators give out rep.

opeth_oasis
03-04-2005, 12:12 AM
that sounds decent enough

Well, one of the ideas is to lower the amount of rep needed to obtain stars and then only let moderators give out rep.

Yeah, but I have the feeling that moderators, especially so-called "Nazi mods," would a) either not be able to see all those deserving because of the sheer number of posts the site generates, or b) (and I'm talking about the Nazis that supposedly exist) neg-rep those who are undeserving. This might be the best conclusion that could be reached, and it would ensure no rep parties. Now that I think about it, if you're deserving enough, it'll probably be apparent to the mods and you'll get rewarded.

But for places like guitar, all the things people would get repped for are responses to questions. How will mods judge how helpful a given response is to a threadstarter or question askers?

Riva

I suppose the idea is that if your doing a good enough job that mods notice your work, then you deserve the stars. However, a thread in site forum, where users can bring the mods' attention to potential rep situation might be effective.

However, I think it is a good thing that it has been removed for now. I could even bear to lose my stars and my 16700 or something rep points...

Riva
03-04-2005, 02:20 AM
I suppose the idea is anyone left with stars deserves to hang on to them?

The guitar forum mods will handle it in a way they see fit. It will be easy in R&M tho, people who post good threads, replies, and help out will be the ones with rep. Basically anyone who is a good member.

I think without the rep - + thing, it takes away an element of fun from the site.... I used to enjoy it when i would get reputation, and appreciate it... Maybe users can add reputation ect: but the comment has to go through the mods first eg: For helping me out .....
I think it would be an effective way, because i often got neg repped because i was a fan of a certain band ect:
Ultimatly though i feel that this idea would put twice the amount of work on a mod....
Maybe there could be a new rule.... Only give rep if a person really deserves it...

Bartender
03-04-2005, 09:09 AM
That was the intention of the rep system as it stood previously though.

Besides, I'd rather have the rep system gone, and the search function (hopefully) back, without MX crashing more frequently.
