IN GRIND WE CRUST
Crust, Grind, and Power Violence Discussion Thread

What is Crust?
Crust is an evolved form of hardcore punk. It has been described as
apocalyptic hardcore with a tinge of metal. Its lyrics are usually
very political in nature, dealing with everything from squatting, to
veganism, to anarchy, and to animal rights. Taking elements from
anarcho and grind, crust bands have come up with their own original
sound, which can vary from slow and sludgy, to blisteringly fast. Some
early bands include Antischism, Amebix, and Deviated Instinct, who
originally coined the term "crust" as it was originally called
"stenchcore". Current crust bands include World Burns To Death, Behind
Enemy Lines, Hellshock, and Subvert Citizens.

What is Grind/Grindcore?
Grindcore is a very intense genre that is the furthest expansion of Hardcore Punk. Grindcore stands for Hardcore that grinds. It started out in Great Britain with the band Napalm Death and it's genre defining album Scum. This beginning sound was million mile per hour political protests from teenagers screaming their throats out. Over the years the genre has expanded and mated with the metal genre death metal and thus commercialized the genre somewhat for bands that took this mating and adapted it to their sound. Though nowadays there are some bands who are still true to the original sound of a warp speed revolution. This is musical holocaust with pure decimation in the fore.

What is Power Violence?
Power Violence is a sub genre of grindcore, and contains shrieked, high pitched vocals, very fast guitar, and very fast drums, using blast beats very often. Songs are played at such break-neck speed that power violence songs are often no more than 1 minute long, and are at times as short as 20 seconds long. Power Violence was pioneered in the 80's, from bands such as Infest, and Siege. It had it's greatest explosion in the early 90's, often refered to as the second wave of power violence, containing bands such as **** on the Beach, Charles Bronson, and Spazz. Bands such as Capitalist Casualties, Man Is the Bastard, and No Comment were called the first wave of power violence.

ENT did support nasum a while back, but then again crust, grind and hardcore are very similar... i dont like it when people get too anal about categorizing bands. Its just good music, you dont need to get too bogged down with sub-genres.

It's a split with Deep Wound, who was around about 1 year or so before Siege and from the same area. They pretty much invented the blast beat. They're not purely grind, but some raging hardcore. I have some on SlSk, if you have it.

Also, like someone else said, Blood Brother aren't grind AT ALL. They're not even hardcore.

My favorite "grind" bands are:

They get called screamo or even emo violence but I don't think that accurately describes their music. They don't sound like Raein or Saetia or anything ("screamo") and emo violence I don't even think one could consider a subgenre. Oh, and to clarify about Siege and any releases they had, they had 0 releases. They released three songs, "Cold War," "Sad but True" and "Wall," on a compilation called Cleanse the Bacteria which is the only official release they ever did. They recorded a demo tape with their other 6 songs on it. They broke up some time after that, and the tape got bootlegged as a 7" called Drop Dead, probably from the first name. Thier three songs from that comp. also got bootlegged as a split 7" with Deep Wound. Relapse remastered the songs in 1994 or something and released it as a CD. Last year Deep Six released it as an LP. Like Major General Despair said, they reformed briefly in the early 90s with Seth Putnam on vocals instead of Kevin Mahoney. It all fell apart and probably for the better.

I was just wondering, what do you guys like about the songs? It sounds like a guy screaming while everyone else is trying to make as much noise as possible.
crust, like any other genre has a wide range of bands, and thus, not all bands sound the same, some have their own style. as for me, it has an obvious influence from metal, and i started listening to metal before i listened to punk, so that and my interest in politics, kinda threw me upon it, as it was the best thing for me.

Brain Toad

I don't know why I like grind. A lot of the time I just like stuff that is really noisy and really fast for this short burst of musical chaos to blow my mind for a few seconds.

I like crust because of the metal influence and the political side.

Have you saw the 'Live From The Russian Compund' video? It's on their site if you,or anyone else who hasn't heard them, hasn't.

I think pretty much everyone knows about the Locust. I used to REALLY be into them, but not so much anymore. They still have a couple songs that I listen to occassionally, like Moth Eaten Deer Head, that's one of my favorites.

I think I have.

Edit: I found a site a while ago that has every one of The Locust's songs and put it on my favorites. My Firefox ****ed up the other day and I had to switch profiles. If someone could tell me how to switch back to the other profile since I have no idea how to do it, I could post the link.

I know we have plenty of crust fans in the punk forum, but how many grind fans do we have? I'd like to start some good discussion about grind/crust, your favorite bands, etc.

Spazz is powerviolence which is arguably grind

Brain Toad
07-06-2005, 04:06 PM
I never could figure out the difference between grind and powerviolence.

And Disrupt suck IMO, they are boring and annoying.

Toe Rag
07-06-2005, 04:11 PM
Grind now a days is mostly just a lot of shitty death metal played quickly. There are some bands that play it and manage not to get into the DM **** like Birdflesh, Burnt by the Sun and older Cripple Bastards, and probably a lot of other stuff. I tend to shy away from grind because of the aforementioned reason. Powerviolence is playing grind without the or with little (death)metal influences. Get a hold of some Hellnation or Yacoepsae or something to see a good example.

Brain Toad
07-06-2005, 04:12 PM
That's why I don't like Disrupt, it sounds like really ****ty death metal.

So Powerviolence is like grind, but with little or no metal influence hmm... I can see it sometimes in Charles Bronson and Spazz.

Toe Rag
07-06-2005, 04:13 PM
I guess you could just say powerviolence is grind that stays close to its punk roots.

Toe Rag
07-06-2005, 04:15 PM
Also, there /is/ metal influence, but it's really played down. It's mostly thrash metal instead of death metal.

i had never considered it that way, but it does make sense, though i always threw PV in the same boat as grind, i just never thought too deeply as to why.

nice example, by the way. Hellnation are ****ing killer.

I'm not really sure which. My friend burned all of their material on to a couple cd's for me, but they aren't labeled, so I'm not really sure.

Toe Rag
07-06-2005, 11:33 PM
Well, I could agree about Gatefold, but most people pretend that album doesn't exist. Chaos is Me is pretty straight-forward powerviolence. The only thing weird about it is it had extreme tempo changes, but they only happen once or maybe twice in a song. Dance Tonight! Revolution Tomorrow! just seems like a more artsy version of Chaos is Me

RetiredAt21

agoriphobic nosebleed...seems like a good idea, but they get annoying quick...do the dillinger escape plan count as grind? i thinkee so...i like them...and, blood duster...pig destroyer, i have a comp. they were on a ways back...i liked them mostly for the guitar...you fools should definetly check out a band called You Would Look Better If I Shot You In The Face...i have no idea who they are, where they're from...nuthin...i stumbled across their website on a hxc website, and...crazyness...
listen to their song: http://server2.hxcmp3.com/bands/13254/index.php

Dillinger Escape Plan isn't grind. The best band in the world, yeah, but not grind.

Grindcore = making as much noise as a person can make. That's basically grind. No melody (maybe a little bit in intro's), no real structure. Just...short burst of noise. And if it doesn't have a blastbeat, it's not grind.
