can some please give me a deffinition of a blastbeat ? i think it is wjen the drummer hits the snare really hard but ia m not sure
Blast beat is a drum beat consisting of torrents of alternating or simultaneous snare and bass drums. The hi-hat or a ride cymbal is often played simultaneously with either the bass drum or the snare drum, and occasionally a crash cymbal or china cup is also featured. Diverse patterns and timings are also frequently employed by more technical players. While this method is often used to create a forceful climax, a blastbeat can constitute the bulk of an entire song.
Blast beats have their roots in hardcore punk as well as thrash metal, however in modern standards the snare work is frequently comparable to established snare patterns in jazz. Blast beats are a prominent feature of death metal, black metal and grindcore to increase the speed, density, and percussiveness. Nevertheless they can also be found in other genres, including doom metal. The blast beat is a fundamental component in nearly all of extreme metal. Bands making extensive use of it include Origin, Cryptopsy, Napalm Death, Dying Fetus, Hate Eternal, Suffocation and Dark Funeral among others.
The original use in metal is generally attributed to SOD and Napalm Death. The former showcased the technique by a double-handed blast beat in the track "Milk". The latter started using it as a fundament of their musical compositions.
Early blast beats were generally quite slow and less precise compared to today's standards. Nowadays, a blast beat is normally played in tempos from 180 bpm upwards, with so-called "hyperblast beats" (achieved by using a one-handed roll on the snare and hi-hat and double bass drum) existing in the range of 260-340 bpm. There is also what is called a "gravity blast" which implements a different kind one-handed roll, called a gravity roll, a relatively recent invention which uses the rim of the snare as a fulcrum on which the stick is rocked back and forth, allowing two snare hits with each full arm motion (one on the down motion, and another coming up). Of the three the gravity blast allows the fastest speeds, as it essentially allows the work of two hands to be performed with one.
Typical blast beats consist of 8th note snare and 8th or 16th note bass drum hits, on the top of which a cymbal, normally a hi-hat or a ride, is hit, in Quarter or 8th notes. Variations exist. Some people (most notably Derek Roddy) maintain the bass drum should be played with one foot for the best effect in blast using 8th note bass drum strokes; however, others (in fact the majority of extreme metal drummers) split the 8th notes between both feet.

Nice definition.
I revised the thrash and crust definitions. Here they are:
Crust (Originally done by Subvert_bassist)
My comments of the original:
"He did really well on this, although lacking on some points, still
well done. He actually knew the history which was good."
Crust is an evolved form of hardcore punk. It has been described as
apocalyptic hardcore with a tinge of metal. Its lyrics are usually
very political in nature, dealing with everything from squatting, to
veganism, to anarchy, and to animal rights. Taking elements from
anarcho and grind, crust bands have come up with their own original
sound, which can vary from slow and sludgy, to blisteringly fast. Some
early bands include Antischism, Amebix, and Deviated Instinct, who
originally coined the term "crust" as it was originally called
"stenchcore". Current crust bands include World Burns To Death, Behind
Enemy Lines, Hellshock, and Subvert Citizens.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thrash (Originally done by DDM)
My comments of the original:
"He did a good job, but he concentrated solely on thrash metal. He
completely left out crossover."
Thrash metal was started with bands such as Slayer, Metallica,
Heathen, and Exodus in the Bay Area music scene, and bands like
Nuclear Assault and Anthrax ripping it up over on the East coast in
New York City. These bands took the metal that was around at the time
(Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, etc.) and fused
it with the raw sound of punk rock. They took the hard-hitting
instruments of bands like Sabbath and added the speed and aggression
from punk music. They also took away majority of the lyrics based on
mythology and replaced them with angry, quick lyrics about violence
and discontent. Not to mention singing them in much the same way
hardcore punk bands did, they sang them loud, fast and barely audible.
Around the same time that the Bay Area/NYC thrash metal scenes was
flourishing, another, more raw, scene was culminating in Houston, TX's
punk scene. Crossover Thrash came from punks who were tired of the
same old tunes at the same speed. Bands such as DRI (Dirty Rotten
Imbeciles) and Verbal Abuse pioneered the genre. DRI was actually a
major influence to many thrash metal bands of the time. [NOTE: Dave
Lambardo of Slayer was quoted to have been heavily influenced by them
and is seen wearing their shirt in several live videos.] They infused
the same style that thrash metal was using but stuck to their punk
roots more. Thus the music was, majority of the time, faster, angrier
and rawer. Throughout the 80's NYC also gained a hold of the genre
with such bands as Crumbsuckers and Ludichrist. The genre still
continues to strive with the originals, DRI and Verbal Abuse, and
bands like Municipal Waste and Cross Examination leading the pack of
new bands to keep the genre alive.

Yo. SOD sucks. I've thought so since I was a complete death head and I think so now. Speaking of SOD which is linked to blastbeats, I'm going to make my drummer learn gravity blasts. When he does blasts he uses his right foot at the same speed. I think it helps him coordinate everything.
In other news, my band which has songs that average a minute and a half had our first practice with the new lineup and realized the vokillist who is an amazing writer, writes songs that are too short. It was a funny realization. I think tomorrow we are recording instruments only (because Benjamin the singer lives 20 minutes away from the rest of us and we only get him on weekends) and we might, as we have coined the term, Ed Gein it.
To Ed Gein it means to have all three instrumentalists cover all of the vocal duties. We do this anyway, but it only becomes Ed Geining it when there is no lead vocalist present.
A lesson in grind vocals.
Here is a list of bands I most assuredly do not like that lots of people do like
Ringworm
Coalesce
The Chariot
SOD
The Red Death
The Acacia Strain
Between the Buried and Me
Napalm Death

Crust (Originally done by Subvert_bassist)
I love how he included is own band in the definition.

Yo.

If SOD is referring to Stormtroopers of Death then your opinion means nothing. What would you not liking them since you were a deathhead have anythign to do with a thrash band? Also, I still don't really consider Ed Gein to be grind. As for that list of bands that ye hate, the only bands on that list that I like are SOD and Napalm Death.
I love how he included is own band in the definition.
hahahaha, nah, I added that for him. I would of left it if he had put it, but still. Those are my definitions basically as I edited the originals. I felt like adding them to the def as it would prob help getting their name out amongst MXers.

In my eyes, Bronson and Spazz are very similar; however, there's just something I can't put my finger on that makes me really like Bronson. I just ordered a Bronson shirt; I've been meaning to for awhile. I can't find a Spazz shirt anywhere. I also want a George Harrison shirt. Because they're good too.
