i dont think the number twelve looks like you would be considered grind, more like technical metal/post hardcore. though they do kick *** and put on an even better live show.

what is grind?

Toe Rag

Grind is a type of metal/punk which often consists of blast beats, growling/screaming, metallic riffing and stuff. Short songs, usually under a minute and often political in nature. A lot of people credit Napalm Death with inventing it, but I say eff that and point the credit towards Siege. As you have probably already read, I consider a lot of grind now a days to be crappy death metal, partly in thanks to Napalm Death. There is a subgenre of grind called powerviolence which is grind that is punk rather than metal, though a lot of grindheads don't seem to know about powerviolence and it is usually considered a genre in its own right rather than a subgenre of grind.

Okay, so I need to know proper definitions for the following:

grindcore
spazzcore
emoviolence
powerviolence

So far, I can only make minor delineations between them, and they all seem to apply like a venn diagram. Someone who knows this stuff better than I do explain it.

Emo violence is just really spazzy screamo, basically power violence. In/Humanity coined the term and are really the only band I apply the term too, even though they don't really have that much emotion.

Toe Rag
07-15-2005, 10:29 PM
Yeah, as the above poster said, emo violence is supposed to be mega fast emo. Stuff that gets the label is Orchid, Love Lost but Not Forgotten, In/Humanity and probably a lot of other stuff I don't know. Spazzcore is supposed to be, as the names suggests, spazzy hardcore. Stuff like Blood Brothers and Antioch Arrow. I can't stand it.

Also, I'd still consider powerviolence a form of grind. I mean, it has the exact same ingridients, and it's performed in the same way, there's just more emphasis on the punk rather than the metal. But I don't think that would make it a different genre.

I listen to Nausea, F-Minus, Experiment In Terror(rip) and a couple other bands like that. I guess that counts as punk/crust.

As for grind, I mainly listen to more metalic grind such as Ed Gein, **** The Facts, Ion D, Numbers Revolt, Discord Of A Forgotten Sketch, Cobra Noir, etc...

Yeah, I didn't really mean it was a different genre. It's hard to explain. Most grind kids don't seem to be up on powerviolence because most grind kids come from metal whereas pv kids come from punk. PV /is/ grind, but grind is most often considered metal and pv is definately punk, so people tend to seperate the two. I hope that makes sense.

Yeah, it does.

I think, and I'm not too sure, but, I think that the main difference is that powerviolence is noisier and grind is heavier. If that makes sense.

Still, most people refer to powerviolence as grind. Except for when they're describing a said band.

Wouldn't that dilute the grind? I mean grindcore in its pure form is hardcore/metalcore going a thousand miles a second. So what I want to know is if a grind band, for example Pig Destroyer, added more hardcore into its music would it not slow down and in essence not be grind but say a step below grindcore really fast metalcore?

Crust, as explained prior in the thread, had ye known if ye read the whole thing, is "apocalyptic hardcore", as I've heard be called. Think hardcore with a tinge of metal and, usually, growling vocals. Lyrics will range from political to social topics, and alot of talk of war.

This may sound dumb, but whats crust. I no STZA said that they put crust into CV's sound. So what is it?
Crust. The dirtiest of the **** pile known as punk.
Crust has always been, for the most part, one of the more unknown
sub-genres of punk. It, majority of the time, consists of: heavy
guitar, growling vocals, blast beats or similar drum beats. The
lyrical stylings of crust have generally been known to be about social
issues, war crimes, various political agendas and for the most part,
in support of Anarchism. I have summed it up to being anarcho-punk
blended with hardcore and with a smidge of metal. Some better known
crust bands include: Doom, Dropdead and Misery. Although some bands
borderline with being properly labeled, either anarcho or crust, such
as Aus-Rotten. My personal recommendations would be: Warcollapse,
Avskum, Behind Enemy Lines, hell, i'd recommend almost any crust band.
...and there ye have it.

That influence card's been pulled alot recently, and I've said it once, and I'll say it again; just because a band influences later bands, doesn't mean they're part of that later genre. Discharge is d-beat, and I would consider adding 'em to the list, as I do have a few d-beat bands on there. Although the Varukers are street punk, no way around that, sorry. As much as I love that band, I wouldn't put 'em on a crust list simply because they influenced crust bands.

There is a sick crust radio show on Saturday afternoons on Stanford college radio I think. I love cruising around and scaring suburbanites to music I normally never listen to.
Hahahaha. Awesome! Though for that, Grind or Black Metal would do the best work. :thumb:

Civil Defense Warning sirens ("Air Raid" sirens or "Tornado" sirens) repeated loudly through an expensive (or stolen..) car stereo system in densely populated areas are much more fun (yet much more likely to get you locked up.).
Yeah you know those sirens that go off every first saturday of the month around noon (USA)... those. That can really wad some skivvies up on the right day.

who was that kid that wanted nausea again? i can give you some.

OK, crust related bands.

If Chaos UK is here Discharge and the Varukers are missing (A major influence on hc/crust/punk scene).

Listen to the early Chaos Uk singles. Obviously street punk.
Listen to the split they did with Extreme noise terror. Obviously Crust.

You always have to put up bands in different genres.I heard their early singles and their whole discography. They play chaotic music yes,it's punk.

But you can call it whatever you like, even Bristol punk.

Napalm death (You Suffer is one of the best songs ever)
early Carcass
i don't listen to grind that much except for when im with one of my friends. but we usually listen to it as a joke because most grind bands are really funny. like one did a song called "Ode to Ramen".
the only crust i like is aus rotten, although most people hate them. i just like their music though because they had some pretty cool guitar parts.

Varukers are street punk, through and through. I've heard majority of their albums, including that one, and never have I even considered the thought of calling 'em crust. Sorry mang, but unless alot more people agree with ye on that, I won't consider. I mean c'mon, they were one of the pioneers of street punk.

Oh, and the Casualties just, plain-out, suck.

Why do grind bands feel the need to have vulgar names? It's starting to get annoying.

Lord Zerpent
08-12-2005, 07:37 AM
Because grind is extremity, and alot of it is about pissing people off, or disgusting them.

RetiredAt21
08-12-2005, 11:59 AM
Not all grind is like that. Brutal Truth is a good example. Awesome band, but it doesn't rely on a crazy vulgar name or vulgar lyrics to get attention.
