no news as far as I know.
I do wonder if their sound will be even more 'perrfect'.
as they have entered the studios when they had everything written.
on their older albums they had vague ideas, but no complete songs when they entered the studio.

I wanna see if Mikeal has grown vocally.
cause it's just going upwards.
esp. his growling, I like his deliverance(album) style growling so much.
his growls get deeper and more badass all the time
I don't know if it can get much better than it is now.

Mikael and Peter have enough sense to not let a producer tell them what to do, I mean they've only been in the buisiness for the past 15 or so years, you know?
I see Roadrunner as a good thing, that will make Opeth far more accessable, and then all the kids who bitched at me for wearing Opeth shirts and telling me how talentless they are and that anybody can play that will finally have heard them, and feel like douches.

you've got a point, but who thought metallkica would make a horrible album like st anger?
meh, but Mikeal won't dissappoint us, I'm sure.
if only they would update on how their album is coming along.

Hehe. I'm not too worried, considering "Once" was arguably their best album to date. I mean, really...nothing says "sell out" more than "Hire the entire London Symphony Orchestra," does it? They've grown alot more ambitious, and definetly crafted their best song to date - Ghost Love Score.
It did kinda bother me that "Wish I had an Angel" was the U.S. single that was pushed, as that was by far the weakest song on the album and didn't really represent what their sound was about. Fun live tune, though.

I love SDBN, and Patterns!!!
Also someone posted last page about Opeth merging with RR, but i wouldn't worry because Opeth stated very clearly in a little special on guitar.com that they purposly try to write songs people can't predict. Check out the video its really awsome. They basicly disect the song Drapery Falls.
I worry about RR because of overexposure and the fact that they may make Opeth write singles, which obviously will not work.
Good night everyone.

Hopefully the closest thing Opeth will come to a single is a song like Hope Leaves or one of ther other many ballad songs. If they change to RR liking they will lose a LARGE fan base and they know that.

Yeah, Also, you have to remember, as Mikael mentioned on the dvd. "we're going back to the old opeth formula". Basically, anything and everything between morningrise and deliverence yes?
I could see how Metallica could bring out St. anger, They were always the gods of the mainstream metal scene, and their ego's predicted that they stay there. (that is only my opinion ok people? so no flaming, please, we're all brothers here).
With Opeth, i highly doubt that they can make the transition from death metal (i know ****ation wasn't, but the band itself is, you know?) to nu-metal.
I know that In flames went from being a melodic death metal band to what they are now, and Soilwork went from Chainheart machine to what they are now. But they progressively changed, they didn't just change within one album.
I think if Opeth ever make a nu-metal album like that, it will progress towards that sound within the next couple of albums.

haha, you know what i mean :p. With In flames there was colony, which was ok, then reroute to remain, which was quite poor, then this new peice of crap. with soilwork, there was natural born chaos, which was still ok, then there was figure number 5(real let down). We can at least get 1 or 2, ok albums if thats the case:p

In Flames is not really Nu-Metal, they're just less melodic than before, I'd really consider them Melodic Death metal with slightly more rhythm influence, and I don't really think R2R or STYE are bad, only if you are expecting the older sound, but if you look at it from it's current perspective as something new, both albums are quite a treat, plus F(r)IEND is a kick *** song.
Century Media would be a much better pick IMO.
Century Media would be awesome. They would be able to retain their sound with no strings attached and also get massive exposure touring with the labels' other bands. That would be the best to me, since Century Media seems to care little for the usual major-label trappings and designs, and the bands would be able to keep their sound consistant.
But I wouldn't have so little faith in Roadrunner. They've got Nightwish, which while similar to Evanescence is still not the most poised for a crossover jump they could have picked, and Dream Theater is in its own little cocoon at Atlantic, which is a major label.

I'm going to assume that it isn't really the South Park Trey Parker... just someone on the board has that screen name.
The fake article was about how Mikael was going to release a biography of the band. It was absolutely hilarious... I think I cried. Here's an excerpt from it (someone turned it into a signature):
Martin Lopez, who plays drums for the band has already planned a counter-attack by releasing his own biography of the band, reportedly titled "God****it **** Akerfeldt that faggot, **** him and his stupid ****ing moustache."
It was beautiful... I want to read it again.
I even put part of that quote into google search but nothing came up :(

As for the article on Opeth.com, here is another small excerpt, funnier then the one before, haha.
Mikael Akerfeldt-There you go, I'm suprised it never dawned on you earlier that I am actually the son of God, Jesus Christ. My carpenting skills are very good too so I thought it was obvious for you all. I grew tired of one stringed instruments and tablas down in Jersualem so when I got incarnated in Stockholm the whole death metal scene really took me by storm. yup, but only one martin(lopez, the drummer) played on the album. They got the bassist shortly before mayh (remember the martin's are cousins, and lopez introduced the idea of mendez playing for opeth) and mikael didn't have a good chance to gauge mendez's writing/playing abilities--so he decided to play bass.
I don't know whether it's because I'm stupid, but I went to centurymedia.com and they have MAYH listed at $5. That just seems wrong.

The SYL drummer played for Opeth a few times when Lopez was sick. Apparently he had perfected the songs in about 3 hours, thats pretty sweet :D
That drummer would be Gene Hoglan, and he's probably the greatest metal drummer on the planet. He's ****ing incredible...check out his stuff with Death, he used alot more finesse with Chuck (Gene played on the Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic albums).

Heck yeah, some people say he sounds too much like a drum machine. All i have to say is..................how is that a bad thing? Gene is a beast of an animal of a drummer. I think the only metal drummer that comes close to him technically is Mike Portnoy. Then again, i haven't heard many death metal drummers, and i know they are awesome. Flo Mournier for example.

The "drum machine" thing would definetly be a bad thing...it connotates a lack of emotion, lack of any "human" elements to a person's playing; flat feel. I could see that with SYL, but with Death his playing was VERY human. He's one of the few metal drummers (Martin Lopez, John Tempesta, Dave Lombardo, and Sean Reinart being a few other examples) who can really groove...check out "Crystal Mountain" for an excellent example of this. With SYL, I think his drumming is mostly reflective of what Devin wants him to do, which is, like you said, to emulate a drum machine.

Probably my favorite song of all time: The Drapery Falls
Followed closely by Bleak and Harvest
Speaking of BWP, I just got it and listened to it. It is one incredible album. Every song is extremely good. It is far better as a whole than Deliverance album. I particuarly loved the title track, Leper Affinity, THe Drapery Falls, and Bleak.
This album is near perfection for heavy music, in my opinion. Just plain beautiful, yet very dark and heavy at the same time.

I like Orchid quite a bit...it wasn't really as 'progressive' as their other works, it was more just melodic death/doom with some simple-ish interludes (compare the soft parts on In Mist She Was Standing to the complexity of the soft parts of Bleak or other songs).
But what it lacks in technicality, it makes up for by the sheer atmosphere it creates, which I think is unmatched by their other albums and completely unique. Morningrise seemed to be more about guitar harmonies, Blackwater Park about dark and evil chords (Leper Affinity or Drapery Falls), but Orchid is just all about the general vibe that defines Opeth for me.
In mist she was standing is one of Opeth's best songs in my opinion, and Silhouette is in a different league since it has little to do with the musical style of anything I listen to, but I think it is the best 3 minutes of music ever written. Forest of October really lives up to the mood, I think. The intro part and outro part both have that same feel that occurs throughout the song, and despite the many transitions within the song it feels cohesive.
Since then Opeth has improved in many ways; better song structures and more interesting distorted and clean guitar parts, but in some ways they have not matched that immediate barrage of riffs which started off their recorded career.
And I have no idea why I typed so much.

In what ways does Morningrise differ from Blackwater Park?
Night and Day.
Blackwater park has more ''Hidden'' guitar in it...if that makes sense. There is a LOT of tracks on Blackwater Park...As for Morningrise, they could of recorded it using not even 8 Tracks. The storyline basis and the song definitions are totally opposite of each other. ''To Bid You Farewell'' is mourning, Life Lost. ''Blackwater Park'' is revenge...
''Sick Liasions raise this monumental Mark...the sun sets forever...over..Blackwater Park...''
Without the vocals, I'd think they were 2 different bands. There's no similarity in guitars between the 2 Albums. Drums are really close...but like I said...Night and Day.

hey, an interesting tidbit...The band made 600 bucks TOTAL when Orchid and Morningrise came out...COMBINED! just thought you would like to know...seeing this year is the 10th anniversiary of Orchid's release.
Flynn was saying something like if you take out the vocals, you would say that Orchid and BWP were done by 2 different bands and I couldn't agree more. When you think about it, it makes sense. With BWP, they have a new rythum section and were MUCH MUCH more solid. Also, look at the ages when they did the album. Mike and Peter were 20 and 21 respectively and BWP came out 5 years later. Anyone knows that you go through a lot of changes in 5 years, ESPECIALLY as a musician.
I think Orchid, for what it is, is an amazing album, but to me, BWP is by far (as of now) their apex, their masterpiece. I think Steven Wilson really helped bring out great things in Mike with musicianship AND song writing. I think they all really solidified as a band in the time from Orchid and BWP.
Then again, I think its really unfair to compare the 2 albums because of the before mentioned reasons. They are clearly different bands.
Another fact: Mike and Peter both dislike The Night and Silent Water due to the fact that Mike wrote it after his grandfather, who he was apparantly close to, passed on. So, bad association there. Just thought you would like to know :)
I love Orchid, but compared to the others I have, it's just not as good.

Seperate sentences are your friend.
Deliverance's lack of mix as compared to the other albums is what bothers me. Structurally, the playing is a lot more complex especially with Akerfeldt's riffing and Lopez's rhythmic displacements, but there is far less ambience and not many good "medieval-type" showcases for the acoustic guitar. Why is it that the acoustic solo piece is a little throwaway like "For Absent Friends," albeit a pretty one? That's pretty much what bothers me.

What I was wondering was what album I should get if I want their best work. I realize that everyone has a different opinion on what album is the best, but if I could just get an idea, that would be substantial. Thanks a lot in advance!
Indeed. :D
I have told people to buy ''My Arms, Your Hearse'' first because I was into that LP at the time. Other times I have reccommended ''Deliverance'' only because of the fact that most people I know in real life have no f*****g clue who Opeth is, but love ''the masters apprentices''.
And other times I have suggested Morningrise.
I'd go Chronological Order.
Orchid
Morningrise
My Arms, Your Hearse
Still Life
Blackwater Park
Deliverance/****ation
:chug:
If you have the money, chronological is the way to go, but Orchid may not be the best intro to the band, possibly putting people off.
I do love Orchid though.

I think I'm gonna go with Morningrise because it has the awesome "Black Rose Immortal" on it. I will be buying it the same day as I buy "With Teeth" by NIN so I am not really strapped for cash. If I like Morningrise then I will buy more of their albums. Thanks again guys.

I find it very hard to get into Orchid and Morningrise :( sorry guys. The songs just don't interest me at all. The only couple that do are 'The twilight is my robe' and 'To bid you farewell'.
My order for albums would have to be.
1.MAYH
2.Still Life
3.****ation
4.Deliverance
5.Blackwater park
6.Orchid
7.Morningirse

I'd quit my job, move into my moms basement and listen to it for 6 months straight...then when she kicks me out, I'd end up in Idaho somewhere with $4.32 cents in my pocket, with no place to go, holding the legendary ''3 Disk-Set''. And whenever I talk to someone, it would be a quote from a lyric from a song on that ''3-Disk-Set'', eventually leading me to an Insane Asylum. :amaze:

Which is why I'm glad that Godhead's Lament kicks in as it does. Really, now...I think that people are overreacting about the Roadrunner thing. Sure, they have some pretty dumb bands on their label, but they also are very good at getting the **** albums into American stores. Opeth is not the kind of band to bow before mass appeal; they've been around for a really long time, and have a devoted fanbase. They have no reason to sell out, nor are they the type of musicians who would. All that this means is that us Americans will have a better time getting ahold of Opeth merchandise, and we may even see the band touring around the US more often.
Opeth are one of the few bands that have truly earned a 1,000,000+ fanbase. I'm confident they will not sell out.
Det Nosnip, on a related issue, have you seen either of the posts I've made in response to your posts about Nightwish's use of orchestra in "Once" as argument against them selling out?

Is he the keyboard player?
Yeah. If they're going in a black metal direction, the Mellotrons, etc. would be neccesary, yes? Doesn't black metal have symphonic elements and keyboards/synths? This could be a sign that this is indeed a direction they're pursuing.

Yes, although I'm pretty sure that at this point he's had no musical input and has only toured with the band. Steven Wilson has played the keys/mellotron for opeth albums since blackwater park.
